I don't know why everyone gives Villazon such a hard time. Yes he's had some vocal troubles as he's gotten older, but I think he sounds fantastic here. You can't really compare these two singers because they're very different. I think they both do a wonderful job with this beautiful song.
I've always admired Villazon's courage and I think he does a beautiful interpretation of this song. Bjorling is more solemn and is very beautiful with his elegant voice and impeccable vocal line.
Bjoerling’s approach to this beautiful song has thrilled me ever since I heard his recording done at Carnegie Hall in the 1950s. This recording, made much earlier in his career, is absolutely wonderful, as well. Villazon’s performance is good, but, to this listener, not as moving. I also enjoy listening to the recording made by DiStefano very early in his career, even though he does not sing the high “A” near the end of the song.

Wonderful by Villazon. The only downside is really that he looks like Mr Bean. In a way, you could say that Björling lived at the wrong time. The sound quality today is completely superior. On the other hand, Björling was in the right age to the extent that it was the golden era of tenors. During this era he was the leading tenor.

These two singers are quite different. Let me give you a rule of thumb. There is approximately one great tenor for every billion people on earth. When Bjorling was alive there were only about two and a half billion people - and there were about two and half great tenors. Now there are seven billion people but most of the great tenors today are orientals and unknown in most western opera houses. The same math applies to other rare occupations like theoretical physicists. Both Villazon and Bjorling had health problems. Villazon had a congenital growth in his vocal mechanism that shortened his career. Bjorling had a bad heart and died young. Carreras had health problems too but Pavarotti and Domingo both sang well into their late seventies. Modern health care could have saved Bjorling and Caruso. With his technique Bjorling cold have dominated the opera stage until he was ninety. Bjorling had an extremely pure silver voice. Some called it a 'choir boy' sound. But he also had a blazing top which can be heard here to good effect. But Bjorling was never much of an actor and not very emotionally available on stage. Villazon is exactly the opposite. He displays everything he feels - and he feels a lot. Both were fine musicians and excellent interpreters with good instincts for style and idiom. But Bjorling was much more reserved and Villazon almost goes out of control in many pieces when he gets excited. But Villazon is a superb Mozart singer and very well schooled in almost every genre of music. Both are better than Pavarotti in almost every way.
1. "Pavarotti and Domingo both sang well into their late seventies". The Pavarotti we knew died at the age of 72.... 2. "most of the great tenors today are orientals" If they were, we would have heard of them as they would have been invited to sing at the big opera houses such as Covent Garden, MET etc. and had everyone blown away, according to your statement. 3. "Both are better than Pavarotti in almost every way." The most obvious way was/is that both had/have better weight control....other than that it is all in the ears of a listener but to say that about the leading tenor of the 70s-90s without putting undenieable facts on the table is a bit disrespectful. Neither of them had a comparable career.
You are not stupid. Villazon sings this beautifully. But it is not fair to pitch him against Jussi Bjorling who is the definitive reference for for all tenors.
I am a Jussi fan, but here I think he is either intoxicated or didn't get enough sleep.
