Basically, the narrow throat in this test is the RAM, used by the MV8800.
It's an old SDRAM, which is where the projects are stored until they're saved. This means loading times are going to be painfully slow no matter the HDD installed. 5400rpm disc HDD's load/read times are almost at par to the max load/read times of the RAM. That's why you see only 6% difference with the Solid State Drive.
SSD's advantage in these kinds of machines (and old PCs as well) is ZERO NOISE and reliability. Nothing more.

@@DjSabzi No. The bottleneck is the Motherboard. Even if ssds was 100mphs an hour, the CPU is a antiquated junction, sadly. So in effect its a 30 mphs lane. I know it Will save somewhat faster, but f it, i bought an old sata disk instead of an Ssd because, theyre dirtcheap and dat.
@@krakapoww is there a way to swap the cpu with one that is faster? For example the fantom x or fantom g cpu.
The maximum harddrive size is 128 gig. My thought was to use a 256 gig sata ssd with an ide to sata adapter. With the ssd partitioned as 128 gig and the rest left unformatted. The reason is redundancy. When an ssd begins to fail it writes data to available previously unformatted parts of the drive and converts it to a read and writable formatted portion.
The loading bottleneck is not the media type, but rather the internal proprietary file system interleave time. All audio files are converted into Roland's proprietary file format also used in the VS recorders. This is why MV's are so much slower than MPC's. It's really painful using MV's

This i how it works: when you upgrade the mv8800 with a standard ssd be sure to buy a 44pin ide (2.5") to sata adapter, format the ssd with a regular windows pc and use a program like GUIformat to enable 128gb in fat32 format (128gb = max for the mv), name the volume MV-8800HD, then copy by usb all the system files from the original hard disk to the ssd. After this you can swap the drives and save your first project on the ssd so you won't get a load error. You will have to set the sata dapter in master mode (probably by removing a jumper).

The MV takes ages to load and save But, the workflow is amazing. It's so fast. Checkout Warren Harris on the MV 8800 on TH-cam unreal.

Man the save time on the mv is nothing. I don’t mind it at all Try sample slicing. Aka chopping a long sample on a Yamaha rs 7000 could take up to 5 min and that’s a mono sample that’s before you even start forming a pattern 😂😂😂😂.
It's 2020 and I go me a used one for $425 USD. MPC's still own the industry.

wow that is very slow. But there is something inside me saying to acquire one of these. Have seen them go here in Ireland for around 600 euro.

It looks a lot like that the SSD is not the bottle neck. However, I noticed that you use a Zheino SSD, which seems to be DRAMless and may even contain reclaimed flash ( th-cam.com/video/P8HaJZ8pVbU/w-d-xo.html ). I would recommend to do this test again using a quality SSD with DRAM and made by one of top tier manufacturer (eg. a Samsung EVO), while taking into account the setup suggestions others wrote in the comments. Maybe you have different results. Also, the clock speed of the RAM may have a small impact. Do you use the fastest RAM available for this unit?
quality ssd makes a huge difference plus your hard drive is also million times larger..
Not many PATA(IDE) SSDs, only SATA.
where do u get the right ssd for the mv8000
Hi! I have a question. I did exactly the same upgrade. I needed more space than the original HDD and I took the less noise and slightly better read and write speed as a nice extra. But...after the upgrade I can't see the Zheino anymore on my (Mac or Windows) computer via the USB connection. Do you have the same problem, or are you still able to transfer files from your computer to the SSD and vice versa? Thanks, I appreciate your answer.
Sorry, we've sold the MV 8800 a while back, so I have no way of checking it.
Late Night Beats No problem. Maybe another TH-camr can confirm. For now, I presume upgrading with the Zheino breaks the USB connection. So people know when they do the upgrade.
On a second thought, have you formatted the drive from inside the MV8800? It has to be formatted by the machine in order to work.
Late Night Beats Thank you for your second thought 😀 I did format the Zheino. Everything works (loading, saving, recording) except the USB connection. I think this is a overseen consequence of upgrading to SSD.

Bro, what do you mean nimble, thats bull shit. I realize that the ssd wouldn't make much difference because the memory (ram) is so old school. Once it's loaded into memory there is no difference. There won't be anything different with the buttons or pads?

I guess it's more of portable studio than a sampler, and the Roland mostly targets the Hip Hop community interested in MPC-style workflows. I personally stick to my Octatrack :)
I've been looking at those because I've missed the workflow I had on an MV-8000. If it had MIDI of any kind it would be a great alternative. Even if it only had MIDI Out, I would be quick to jump on it.

People call it the MPC killer but I don't know... Looking at audio tracks, CD burner, synth features, preset library, sequencer ppq resolution, realtime timestretching and all that - ok... but then - Only one MIDI out and most importantly, at least for me - a fu*#¥ng cooling fan... and that's it for me, sorry to say...
Easy fix tho. Silent sdd with no fan and a midisport type splitter. Now theres 8x times midi and No noise
kapoww All MPCs except the 500 have at least two MIDI outs for up to 32 channels (MPC 1000, 2000 and 2000XL) or even four outs for up to 64 channels of external MIDI. A MIDI splitter doesn't give you more channels. 16 is ok I guess but that's not exactly what I expect from an MPC killer. Are you sure about the MV accepting an SDD and will that really make it silent?
MV8000\8800 have two midi out (A and B), and only one midi in :(
GeneralDead1978 You're right, on a picture I saw three MIDI jacks and figured it must be in, out and through but it's actually one in and two outs. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for letting me know!
You never got deep into this machine did you? It does a lot more then a MPC ever could and that's why people didn't like it. Because the learning curve, and how complex it could get. People just want to sample, loop, and be done. Work flow, and simple minds..
They will need to make another machine with way faster/better RAM,and a recent CPU,like an i7 should help,plus,you need to code the OS differently.They would probably be better off usingsome ind of LInux/BEOS style OS,that can be stripped down for one singular purpose,like the Motorola in my Ensoniq ASR10.That baby is slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww too and uses floppies,yet how fast do you really NEED it to be?Are you sitting there,making something that brings you a million dollars,worried about time constraints,or making music in the hopes of???I'm still going to use my MV8800,no matter what,because i do not fall into the hype of complaining,nitpicking,and finding what's 'wrong' with gear.
