  • Uh oh! The vinyl rub rail on the side of your boat got scuffed or scratched when it rubbed against the piling in the slip. BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Lenny Rudow shows you how to keep your boat's vinyl rub rail looking new (or at least better than it did). Beyond repair? Find out how to replace a rub rail here: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/...
    Apologies for the awful audio. The wireless mic disconnected itself after we tested it, and there's a lot of road noise nearby. Turn on closed captioning if you are having trouble hearing it.

    Thanks for the tutorial! It would be really nice to see up close and detailed shots of the area, both before and after.

      Thanks for your comment and suggestion, Judy. Not sure if it's easy to view, but you can see the before in the video thumbnail. I thought I shot a clip of the finished rail, but I couldn't find it when I was editing. If I can find a clip of the finished rail, I'll post a link to the before and after.

    For this sort of job would you always do the sanding dry?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question, Tim. The idea behind wet sanding is to lubricate and remove hard gritty particles that the sanding creates, but in this case, you're sanding a relatively soft material. So wet sanding wouldn't really improve or change anything. Hope this helps.

      We can't win ’em all, Greg. Had the B-team (aka, me) on the camera for this one. We've upped our production value considerably since then.

      Interlux 202 Solvent. I think for this job I might try acetone first (since I already have some), but it might evaporate too quickly.

      Hi Pete. Thanks for the question. Erik is correct in his answer--Interlux 202. I'll go ahead and put the materials info in the description, which I meant to do the other day and forgot. 🙄

    I have a question what type of sealer can I use because the one I installed on my skeeter 2011 is different than the one it came with the new one it’s a straight sealer rubber and the original had an L shape that molded to the bottoms

    • @boatus
      @boatus  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the question, Bassing. We're afraid you're trying to fit a square peg into a round hole -- you need an insert designed to mate up with the type mounting track on the boat. Adding a sealant is likely to produce substandard results that you won't be happy with and you're probably going to be better off replacing the entire track or using the appropriate insert. That said, any standard marine adhesive/sealent (like 3M 4200) will work and will last for years, but will also be very difficult to remove. Silicone sealants will also work but will have a shorter lifespan. Hope this helps.

    Is Interlux 202 solvent the same stuff as Acetone?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question, David. From what I understand, they're similar. The 202 contains chemicals that keep it from evaporating as quickly as acetone.

    2 hours for that little 15 inch section???

    • @boatus
      @boatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It took WAY more sanding than you'd think to get all the scratches out, Jck. We went into the project expecting to knock it out in about 20 minutes. The laugh was on us! Lenny was pretty sweaty by the time he finished. (If the scratches are more extensive than a small area like you see here, it might be more economic to replace the entire rub rail. You can find a how-to guide here: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2017/august/easy-rubrail-replacement)

  • @danielesposito9705

    ha! Now you've got to do the rest of the rub rail so it matches that pretty section!!

    • @boatus
      @boatus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rest wasn't bad -- just where it rubbed on the piling. It will all blend in quickly! Thanks for watching, Daniel!

    He's probably using an Acetone based product. NOTICE too, that he's applying it over water. Notice too that he says COVER THE CAN immediately after pouring some onto a rag. Dangerous. Wow. idiots like this guy not only cause damage to the boat, possible injury to themselves, but POLLUTE THE WATER we enjoy so much.

      Kinda what I was thinking. Sanding over the water and everything. No wonder we have mercury and everything else in the fish we use to eat.

      @@boatus Thanks! I guess I will have to turn on the caption this time. BoatUS videos should be made with more care or maybe you should watch it first before you publish it. BoatUS is a reputable organization, I am a member of BoatUS as a matter of fact -:)

      @@rehaerman6519 Thanks for being a member, Reha. Generally we shoot with a professional videographer/editor, but due to COVID we weren't able to fly him down. Our B-team is still learning but getting better. Here's hoping we can do better this year!

      @boatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rehaerman6519 Exactly. The lav mike we were using shut off while we were shooting, and all we had was ambient audio. Of course the marina is right below a noisy bridge, and there are commercial fishing charters that go in and out. Not ideal at all!

    I hate insttructional videos with poor sound quality and no links to mentioned products. This video is 2 for 2. Not recommended.

    • @boatus
      @boatus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the feedback, MSSfan. Actually, I'd argue that we're 1 for 2. There's a materials list with links to the products used in the description (as noted in the video title). Yes, we had a problem with the audio--the wireless mic didn't work for some reason and while the external mic is pretty good, it picks up a lot of ambient sounds. Unfortunately, Covid has meant that we can't bring our professional videographer in for shoots, so you're stuck with the B-team. Hopefully we'll work out the bugs in the next shoot.

      Thanks for the feedback, Kirt. Unfortunately we had issues with our audio that day, and of course there were all sorts of background noises. If you turn on Closed Captions, you should be able to follow along and get all the info. (It's not auto transcribed.) Also, I included all the supplies and tools we used in the video description. Hope that helps. We'll try to redo it at some point and include better audio. Or if you're a BoatUS Member, we should have an article on this topic in an upcoming issue (possibly Nov/Dec 2023).
