This is my favourite Magnus video since the Alex Honnold collab. Strongman diet swap gimmicks and the like are fun, but this is what Magnus is great at - communicating his pure delight for climbing whilst casually showing off his superhuman skillset. Wonderful.
Yes, whilst like you said the strongman diet swap was fun to watch, I do prefer these video formats from Magnus, love watching him go to different gyms, collab with other climbers, Alex, the Wide Boys, mind you it was fun when he appeared in the Storror video competing against Pete in the hang challenge.

The genuine joy on his face when all his nerves were out in the second round was so refreshing. Go Magnus, you needed this. Please let us see the next comp too 🙏
This was a really good video. I really enjoyed seeing this style of competitive format as someone who doesn't rock climb. Watching you upgrade your score by climbing harder difficulties was really cool! congrats on the third place, I would definitely enjoy watching more of these :D
The foreshadowing smile at 17:56 is all you need to know about the second round hahaha. What a great watch Magnus! I almost started to shout out loud on some of those problems you flashed so nonchalantly along with your superb narrative. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Genuinely nice to see someone go to Japan for once and make the video strictly on the subject, rather than go around for half an hour and film everything different about Japan, compared to western countries It feels like a just another climbing video and I like it
I have never in my life tried climbing, I have no idea why I am so intriqued then to watch a 31 minute video about a person climbing but I absolutely loved it!
Watching this you can clearly see that Magnus's biggest obstacle is not any of the boulders, but rather his own perception and mental hurdles he creates for himself. You're way better than even you think Magnus. This was inspiring to see. It's always better to risk and fail than settle and succeed. Can't wait for what the future holds!!
this is an insane video. I felt the rush just by watching him improve due to him finding his "flow" state, it was like watching a movie where the protagonist finds his true strength. chills tbh
Magnus' performance anxiety is a real thing - not just him being humble. It was on full, painful display when he competed in a Norwegian show called Mesternes Mester. In the semifinal he was way ahead of his competitors and just needed to hit some easy targets to move on. Couldn't hit a single one. I felt so bad for him. He deserved so much better. Great to see him competing in this format where he can relax a bit, get in the flow and just show us what he can do. Fantastic video!
I'm not a climber by no means, but I absolutely love watching your climbing videos. Your humility, in spite of being so damn good at climbing, and laid back manner makes the viewing all the more enjoyable. Do more of these. They were fun to see you competing in these.
As a volleyball athlete seeing magnus get into the zone and feel a flow state after all these years taking a break from competing and genuinely enjoying the competition is actually really moving to watch. Magnus probably wont try to qualify for a world cup again but i do hope he scratches the competitive part of his brain more!!
i been watching magnus vids for years and i swear this is one of the best vids i've ever seen here. his tempterment throughout the event, the progression between rounds, the overall pacing, the music, everything about this video is so kinetic and well done.
Out of all the climbing videos i've seen on this channel Magnus this is my favourite, it had everything. Humility, Defeat, Humour, Honesty, Triumph and most importantly you never gave up. This video is a masterpiece and I will come back to watch it for years.
watching that competitive fire rise in Magnus again is awesome, you can see how his eyes change as the vid goes on as he is locking in more and more, awesome vid, well done Magnus!
One of my favorite Magnus videos in a while. Great storytelling, vulnerability, and authenticity- just Magnus showing who he is. He is so grounded and it makes everyone able to connect with the story regardless of your climbing level.
One of my favorite videos so far. Glad the passion for competition seemed to be coming back. I hope you keep having this much enjoyment in your future climbing projects!
@@luke5896 it probably would, especially if it's a low stakes competition. The more of a community there is at the gym with regulars the more social control there is as well. And you can also just have a couple judges walking around.

Amazing all-around Japan experience! With the videos of Pete and you climbing, this was my favourite "series" I'm always for the pure climbing content! 🤟

As someone who's climbed at bpump I think this is my favourite Magnus video and I've been watching Magnus for years. He seemed so happy at the end, great vibes.
Magnus!! So extremely well done! The 25 looked like a challenge for me! 😅 When you flashed that one problem at the end I was in literal shock. I couldn’t believe after an hour and a half of bouldering, you pulled that off so cleanly. Well done and I hope to see one of these again, even if it’s just for fun!! Those native folks were insaaaaane! The girl that completed the 82 or 88 whichever it was, WOWOWOW! So impressive and fun to watch. Keep up the amazing work!!

Two of greatest climbers in world told you that Magnus can stand on business. It was awesomess to see you find a place where you can start to accept that fact again.
Hi Magnus, I don't usually comment on the videos I watch but this was so good I just had to say it! The format was great and the soundtrack so good 😍 I even found myself shouting ‘come on’! And above all, you were so happy! Well done! Maybe we'll see you at the MOF 2024 in Brussels!
This is by far some of the best content Magnus has released and possibly my favourite video he's made. I'm a long-time viewer, I wear the Rúngne hoodie every day and it's great to see you still push yourself to your limits.
The ending could not have been more perfect with this 2-point difference. When I heard about the finals format, the flight sounded much more appealing. You have nothing to prove and you can just chill now, knowing you're still on the very top of your craft, that must feel so good. Might be my new favourite video of Magnus.
I'm new to your channel. I saw one or 2 videos and I was amazed by your strength, your kindness and humbleness. I'm a new fan and you did an AMAZING job on this competition!! Congrats and keep going hard!!
It was a long time I didn't see you so happy during a video! The smile that came out when you did the black slab was coming really from the heart. I really hope I could see more competitions, both because it was amazing to see all these boulders and because of the spirit you showed in this video!
I love climbing comps formated this way. It feels like just another day at the gym with just enough of the adrenaline rush to push you. Great job magnus!
Coming from a completely different sports background, I absolutely love the format for this competition. Decide your skill level and give it a go. When you conquer that, push yourself to the next. Absolutely awesome.
Magnus please give us longer videos like this! 30 minutes goes by WAY to fast...and for the love of god please do more competitions it brings us all (and you) a lot of joy!
This was a pleasure to watch, you can see that part you 'retired' come back to life again! I think competitive events semi-regularly are just good for the soul. I forget the amount of times I've said I wouldn't compete in my sport again, to end up agreeing to 'fill in a missing place' or 'just for fun' and it has been an absolute blast each time, that edge just never seems to go away. Respectfully, please do more :)
What a powerhouse Magnus is man. You can tell how he's less and less confident in himself the older he gets yet he still manages to crush it and prove he can still climb with the best.
It was really cool to see you go from competition mode and nerves to having fun and just trying to push your score higher. I think that state you had towards the end is the type of mindset I should aspire to constantly be in when I go for my climbs as well - have fun and telling myself "I can do that" on harder climbs. And most importantly, I'm happy for you that this comp turned out to be a great experience for you (to the point that you even consider participating in more!)
keep competing magnus DO NOT LET US DECIDE UR FATE! seeing you compete like this reminded me of watching you practice and compete when I was a kid. Thank you for allowing me to watch you age and grow all these years and thank you to your videos that have watched me grow and played a huge part in helping me become the man I am!
I think this speaks to how broad your talent is; you don't just do boulders that are your style and you're constantly pushing your weaknesses. Amazing job and thanks for sharing something that I'm sure was a pretty vulnerable experience!
As someone who only started following magnus after he’s retired, this was amazing to be able to witness him compete. Good luck for future comps magnus!

definitely one of the best climbing video you have done! the light drama, tension and humor plus good editing and scoring. very enjoyable. too bad for the 2 points. would love to see you compete for the finals.
The trust system is a very common thing in Japan. You can't monitor every single person in the competition efficiently, so it's just not worth it to even try to do so. It's also worth it to point out that they do not monitor everyone most likely because they trust the competitors. That means there's this mutual trust dynamic going on between the organizers and the competitors in regards to the scoring system. There are heavy implications of self improvement in Japanese society, so I would even venture to say that the organizers do not even feel pressured to check for legitimacy of scores at all. That and cheating in any competition would only mean cheating yourself. Congratulations on the result! Thank you so much for the upload and everything you do for the community.
@@niv543 Yup, and generally you know who the stronger people are in a gym, or you can see if someone is doing the real hard problems. So if a rando just writes themselves into being the winner its quite easy to catch it as well.

29:56 Camera work is really good man, props. It's actually scary how good you managed to track Magnus here.
just love how authentic Magnus is all the time - it's inspiring to know that he was nervous but still managed to perform despite it.
Just heard a Norwegian trying to pronounce a Japanese name while speaking in English, what a legend for even attempting that
It's not that difficult to be fair and we learn English from the age of 7.
I started with learning english when i was 5 in kindergarten and despite that i was extraordonary bad at it until i became addicted to english youtube content. So watching lots of youtube did have its perks i guess. Wouldnt do it nowdays though because i feel like youtube has been really getting worse and worse in almost every way.
@@OriginalPurodamn I forgot Northern Europeans are mostly fluent in multiple languages, same in Africa, I know 2 languages and that’s on the low end
@@tristandaries1129 also the fact the languages are more similar linguistically speaking, which does help
He did mostly okay until he got to the second O in Ogikubo and forgot it was an O.
Great video, Magnus! As soon as your attitude went from "let's see where I'm at" to "I'm just gonna go all out" you were crushing haha
Yes! More competitions like these! It's great to see you challenging yourself while also enjoying yourself at the same time. Loved this format, keep it up!
The sense of urgency by the timer and the music + seeing Magnus get competitive and wanting to achieve something, made this video super engaging
COMPETE AGAIN MAGNUS! WE WANT TO SEE IT! CATCH THAT HIGH THAT WE KNEW YOU FELT AT THE END OF THE VIDEO
Definitely more of this. Probably one of your best videos and you look so happy and excited the entire time. Editing and flow was top notch as well 😁 i like how the music beats match with the movements you make on the boulders.
The genuine joy on his face when all his nerves were out in the second round was so refreshing. Go Magnus, you needed this. Please let us see the next comp too 🙏
smiled through all of the last minutes
This was a really good video. I really enjoyed seeing this style of competitive format as someone who doesn't rock climb. Watching you upgrade your score by climbing harder difficulties was really cool! congrats on the third place, I would definitely enjoy watching more of these :D
The foreshadowing smile at 17:56 is all you need to know about the second round hahaha. What a great watch Magnus! I almost started to shout out loud on some of those problems you flashed so nonchalantly along with your superb narrative. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Genuinely nice to see someone go to Japan for once and make the video strictly on the subject, rather than go around for half an hour and film everything different about Japan, compared to western countries
It feels like a just another climbing video and I like it
Magnus this was your best video in years. DO MORE of these compititions. You had so much fun, you are so talented. I loved watching you compete!
Magnus probably wont try to qualify for a world cup again but i do hope he scratches the competitive part of his brain more!!
you do not mess girl with this ass 18:25 eat it or leave it
Right gave me chills the entire video, I also play volleyball and climb too. The flow state definitely translate across any field
Oh the one thing Magnus do scratch always is the competitive part of his brain! :)
i been watching magnus vids for years and i swear this is one of the best vids i've ever seen here. his tempterment throughout the event, the progression between rounds, the overall pacing, the music, everything about this video is so kinetic and well done.
Out of all the climbing videos i've seen on this channel Magnus this is my favourite, it had everything. Humility, Defeat, Humour, Honesty, Triumph and most importantly you never gave up. This video is a masterpiece and I will come back to watch it for years.
That was a really fun watch. I hope you do more competitions that don't really matter so you don't get stressed out and can just have fun doing them.
We are proud of you, Magnus. You competing is a sign of great health. keep up the cool content.
watching that competitive fire rise in Magnus again is awesome, you can see how his eyes change as the vid goes on as he is locking in more and more, awesome vid, well done Magnus!
I love that this is really just Magnus crushing after a really good warm up.
I hope you keep having this much enjoyment in your future climbing projects!
host your own local comps in this format, i think people would love it
This, this is such a cool format for a regular competition.
Great format, but honor system would probably not work in the states.
@@luke5896 it probably would, especially if it's a low stakes competition. The more of a community there is at the gym with regulars the more social control there is as well. And you can also just have a couple judges walking around.
This is freaking cool yes to allow all different levels to meet at a same event! Really looking for something similar in France where I live
@@luke5896This is actually a very common format for local comps in the northeast. Movement Northeast formerly The Cliffs runs 5 of these comps a year and then other gyms like Method and Goat host very similar style competitions.
All your emotions are fully on display here! From self doubt and performance anxiety, to slowly starting to enjoy the experience and entering the zone, "the flow state"!
Amazing video! Amazing all-around Japan experience! With the videos of Pete and you climbing, this was my favourite "series" I'm always for the pure climbing content! 🤟
Love the genuine passion and excitement in his face. New to the show and love it!
Trusting every competitor to fill in their own score is the most Japanese thing ever, they fully trust the honesty of everyone there
Its the same in every "fun comp" in Germany also. I think it's just a climbing thing. No need to cheat on this kind of comps.
If you cheated to get into the finals it'd quickly become pretty obvious I guess ^^
Otherwise since you're just leaving with glory for yourself to know where you finished you just get glory points for what you actually did anyway :)
yeah agree. Also everyone waiting patiently in line while the time is running up seemed to me unthinkable in any other country.
@@Jonas-vx1mrTbf, I don’t think you get anything for cheating unless you’re 1st/2nd. It more of a competition for yourself from what I saw. If you did cheat to 1st/2nd tho, it would be pretty obvious in the final.
You will not win anything by cheating in a format like this.
As someone who's climbed at bpump I think this is my favourite Magnus video and I've been watching Magnus for years. He seemed so happy at the end, great vibes.
Something about seeing Magnus competing again and enjoying it warms my heart. Good job and great video Magnus!
This is the happiest we’ve seen Magnus and it’s awesome to watch! This is way better than torturous physical challenges. Like following along a hero’s redemption arc.
Also, the entire first part I was yelling stop chatting look at the time!!
Best Video in a long time. Not because the others are mediocre or such. This one is just brillant. To see how happy you are getting into boulderflow! Bruised and beaten from a week of hard work allready but the flow kicked it all! Awesome! Please do what you enjoy so much and let us be part of it.
Two of greatest climbers in world told you that Magnus can stand on business. It was awesomess to see you find a place where you can start to accept that fact again.
One can tell in your eyes in the second round you got the flow kicking hard.
Hi Magnus,
I don't usually comment on the videos I watch but this was so good I just had to say it!
The format was great and the soundtrack so good 😍
I even found myself shouting ‘come on’!
Now this grabbed my atention for sure , clicked on the notification instantly😂❤
It was a long time I didn't see you so happy during a video! The smile that came out when you did the black slab was coming really from the heart.
I really hope I could see more competitions, both because it was amazing to see all these boulders and because of the spirit you showed in this video!
I love climbing comps formated this way. It feels like just another day at the gym with just enough of the adrenaline rush to push you. Great job magnus!
I think everyone would get better by watching others climb.
More competition!!! Magnus' road back to world cups would be top tier content
I dont think that will happen at his age but you never know, he is pretty stubborn if he sets his mind on something.
Nice series name! I second that!
You are the best! Making a video while competing, is absolutely insane. I was cheering for you so much. Please more of this
What a powerhouse Magnus is man. You can tell how he's less and less confident in himself the older he gets yet he still manages to crush it and prove he can still climb with the best.
WE DEFINITELY WANT MORE OF THIS, YOU DON'T NEED TO ASK ANYMORE 🔥🔥
It was really cool to see you go from competition mode and nerves to having fun and just trying to push your score higher. I think that state you had towards the end is the type of mindset I should aspire to constantly be in when I go for my climbs as well - have fun and telling myself "I can do that" on harder climbs. And most importantly, I'm happy for you that this comp turned out to be a great experience for you (to the point that you even consider participating in more!)
keep competing magnus DO NOT LET US DECIDE UR FATE! seeing you compete like this reminded me of watching you practice and compete when I was a kid. U can see the passion you feel as you're under pressure and you can see the pride you feel after a successful climb and even your successful attempts.
Congrats on the 3rd place Magnus… that‘s incredible. I was so psyched for you the whole way through this video… we need more of this content please… only if you enjoy it though!!!
Matngus, you are without doubt one of the most humble, modest, resilient, inspirational and motivational athletes in world sport. And whoever does your video editing needs a gold medal too. Absolutely brilliant video - this should be on Netflix as a series!
Definitely would love to see you compete more! Crushed it! Awesome vid
so fun and cool to see you compete again, I'd love to see more vids like this!
This is the best video - seeing you settling into the groove and getting excited about competing is awesome. Definitely want to see more of this content!
This is probably the genuinely the happiest I have seen you in a video. I feel like it really relit your passion for it. Don't feel to pressured or nervous just climb hard because it's fun don't worry about the expectation you place on yourself or from others. Ditto for everyone else too!
I'm impressed Magnus managed to resist competing for so long haha
I usually don't watch pure bouldering videos but I was glued to this one the whole way through! Hope you do more
Magnus, you look your best when you're having fun! It's been a while since I've had so much fun watching a rock climbing video. Pls do / organise more of these formats!
definitely one of the best climbing video you have done! the light drama, tension and humor plus good editing and scoring. very enjoyable. too bad for the 2 points. would love to see you compete for the finals.
The sound editing was just superb! Big props to whoever was behind that
The trust system is a very common thing in Japan.
A lot of local comps work this way even in the UK! :)
@@niv543 Trust is a great system! Just needs people to not take advantage
This is pretty much how all fun and more casual comps are in every single country. Not a Japan only thing
@@niv543 Yup, and generally you know who the stronger people are in a gym, or you can see if someone is doing the real hard problems. So if a rando just writes themselves into being the winner its quite easy to catch it as well.
Oh man l'm watching everything since house renovation and this is one of the best videos on the channel. Love to see you so hyped! That's what i've subscribed for!
That was so much fun to watch! I would love to see more videos of you doing bouldering competitions like these, where it is a competition but almost has the vibe of just being at the boulder gym on a regular day.
