Great coach! I have been a youth coach for many different ages and girls and boys. He has the right attitude and uses quick simple analogies when he can.
The instructor is either an Academy Award worthy actor in disguise OR just an absolutely awesome human being and teacher. Guy seriously needs his own channel.
@Jason Voorhees My daughter named her puppy after you when she was almost 5.. He's almost 9, 110 pounds, and scares the sh** out of my usually fearless brother. Any time he overstays his welcome, all I gotta do is head for the backdoor🤣🤣🤣
@Jason Voorhees She's fearless tbh. She outgrew haunted houses by 6, and I mean the ones that had teen girls crying. Mind you, it was Halloween, and i was watching Jason Takes Manhattan. She walked in right as Jason knocked that kid's head off on the roof. She was crying laughing when it landed in the dumpster. Here's the awesome part of the story. A few months after that, this huge dude at the Indianapolis Airport told her he'd never seen a kid that young with a Jason necklace. It was Kane Hodder, who played Jason multiple times including the Manhattan one. He was cracking up when she told him about the head part, and LOVED that she named her puppy after him. He took pictures with her and gave her an autographed one. He added: "To Berea, my biggest little fan. You have a horrible father!!!" It's still on her wall to this day.
Magnus is secretly a physical comedian, his pratfalls in this were all amazing! I loved how his first fall he absolutely crumpled into a puddle lmao. It takes a master to be so completely believable and hilarious
@@jacksimeri2890 because at the start of the video they explained that part of the prank was telling the instructor that is for a documentary for some program in iceland. i guess you missed it.

I feel like mountain climbers are always based AF. The Alpinist was the coolest person I've seen made a documentary made about him (rip). The only weird one I've seen is the Free Solo guy.. he was kinda lame.
We all knew Magnus was a great climber. But Magnus is also one of the best climbing actors. Using the middle of his feet not his toes, breathing heavy, hips off the wall, and falling off forward. Incredible acting.
That fall where he swung backwards with one hand and splatted face first into the mat, was hilarious. I have no idea how that instructor held back his laughter at that. That young man is great at his job.
The instructor didn't laughed because he would look bad if his "student" gets harm under his supervision. Magnus's fall was priceless, and that young instructor was very professional ! 👍
@@tomassedlacik7236 That was what I was gonna say! A lot of people in this position would become kinda spiteful I think to see someone so casually succeed at something they had to work so hard at

This coach’s humility, love for climbing, support and lack of preconceived notions or limits of his students is the best I’ve ever seen. I wish this guy the very best the world has to offer.
I came to praise the instructor, and I’m glad I’m not the only one! He is so passionate and so excited to make other people as excited, plus the way he explains things and gives feedback and compliments.. any company would be lucky with an employee like that. What a delight to watch.
I’ve been coaching youth hockey over 30 years. This young man is everything you’d want in a coach. Very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, very precise instructions along with encouragement and a genuine love for the sport!
@@fazelezleyno.1fan871 I'd give it at best ok. Maybe they cut it out but the instructor should give a demo in my opinion. Maybe I'm being too cautious but knowing how to fall is more important than knowing how to climb.
@@bigfattank101 It very well could have also been brought at other points and just not made the video. The video is shot from the perspective of the audience knowing who he is so it's very possible there were other parts that were also cut out since the emphasis isn't on his safety or anything. Based on the way he was talking about Magnus' falls it sounds like that was the one thing he was worried about that he falling pretty aggressively, but again for all we know there are a lot of other bits like the part that was edited in at the end of him falling that were just cut out. It's kind of hard to judge his instruction without knowing how much more unused footage there is they just didn't use, didn't get, etc.
I've never seen someone, let alone a coach, so down to earth and genuine about teaching his student. He's so so optimistic and encouraging and never tried to show off once. I hope there are more people like him in the community
I love that the coach noticed, “This guy might be better than me,” but he was still willing to climb with him and be shown up. The showing of a true teacher is one that is happy to see his students surpass him. Excellent job.
I was so confused for a moment... literally thought I posted this cause we have the same pfp's. I was like I don't remember posting this...? Also I never sound that eloquent when talking. Lol
@@oldvlognewtricks Oh he knew at that point. No one is flashing a v6 and all their first day. Most people would get smoked moving up through the grades the way Magnus did here. That was the main thing that tipped him off I think. Magnus needed no breaks, which as a teacher of many first time climbers, raised a few red flags I'm sure.
It's not just an happy thing, but a dream. I am learning to teach mathematics and thus knowledgeable on the subject. If a student used a method I didn't taught and even that I don't know, I would congratule the student and thank him for showing me an interesting way to do it. And the next batch of students would hear that there was a student who ... ^^ I will also be a teacher who devise problems with nice alternative solutions and shortcuts for the astute students. It's true that student have to learn the things, but why not make them enjoy it untethered of fear of mistake and judgement ? Also, the school in which I am learning is pushing Montessori method (socioconstructivism) and it happen that when I discovered her, I admired her work. We also learn other methods, because classes are big and time limited and those can do the job too, but they are less likeable (behaviorism and imprint).

Props to him and to you Magnus, y’all are what make climbing great!
you can really say that the coach loves climbing, i thought it was strong how he visualized every step with his client and virtually climbed along. really also rhetorically very strong and very well explained.
Yep, that's why when he realized that he was obviously not working with a beginner the first thing he did was ask if he minded if he got his shoes so he could climb with him lol. Magnus had to realize the jig was up by that point.
@@ParaAkula Yep! Awesome instructor, I'd love to take classes with him. @@cuylshepherdton7437 Actually, after going back and watching it again knowing exactly what is going to happen there are a bunch of other points as well where Magnus gives it away a bit that I didn't really pay attention to the first time, including a few random times his accent totally slips (like around the 14:00 mark it sounds just like him as if he forgot then the next time he speaks it's like he remembers to do the accent again) or he moves in ways only a climber would naturally move. You're right, somehow I didn't catch that the first time! As soon as he starts the V5 it definitely confirms it but I didn't realize until I went back and watched it closer the second time how many times he makes it obvious early in the video too lol. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the guy caught on pretty early but played it cool, it's exactly what I would do if I were him and I figured it out, I wouldn't say a word unless he confirmed it at the end. He seems like a really good sport about it either way, bet he's a cool dude.
The kid helping him is amazing. I wish all ‘noobs’ had an instructor with the patience, understanding, and enthusiasm he had for a client who really was kinda doing his own thing the entire time. Kudos to this kid! He deserves a HUGE raise cause he just gave this facility the most incredible free advertising of the kind of business they’re running there.

@damian you prob took it the wrong way he's not being arrogant . I can't find the fitting word right now but he's kinda like a proud dad seeing his kid doing good

He wouldn't teach at the top of the industry. He would have to organize other teachers, and who knows if he'd be good at that or even like it. Seems like he's perfect where he is, even though he probably has earned a raise.
I know this was advertised as a "prank" video, but this is the best introduction to climbing video I have ever seen. Kudos to Triston for being awesome. He can coach me any day.
I think this could be the best way to make new people intrested in climbing. I would never click on a video if the title was "Introduction to climbing". I came here to see a prank, but I got interested in climbing.

I've never expressed an interest in climbing in my whole life, but Triston made it look accessible without making it look easy. Dude had such a fantastic energy, was super knowledgeable, and didn't get agitated when an "amateur" was beating his climbs with little to no effort. Really like that guy, felt like he tied the whole video together.
Idk, he was nice but super reserved with praise. If I had ever had a squash student nearly as talented as "Björn" already looked halfway into the video, I would've been "dude you should know that you're a natural and I've never seen anyone this good right off the bat" instead of "nice. This guy is an excellent teacher. The best teachers are unphased by whatever their students throw at them, and can smoothly scale up the level of their instruction to both provide positive feedback on accomplishments and identify areas for potential improvement. I am so impressed with him. What an exceptional coach.

yaah! even just explaining to not let numbers define your expierience in climbing (both ways) was so wholesome :D especially good for a beginner to hear
I'm no climber and haven't ever watched climbing videos but this was amazing to watch. I'm a huge fan of someone with experience going and being "taught" their passion by someone who also has the passion and the respect they gain from each other. Its always amazing watching someone meet a hero of theirs 😊
The details of the acting for V0-V4 were quite impressive. The T-rex arms and straight legs, the re-gripping and re-stepping. Not using the toe and not looking at feet. The alternating not breathing with breathing really hard. And of course, the over-the-top dramatic falls. Oscar-worthy!
I thought the most impressive part was the LESS dramatic falls. It's just the attention to detail. They weren't BAD falls, but they were awkward beginner falls where you might end up on your face or laying on your back instead of just landing to your feet and butt and staying upright
I think the guy obviously sussed it out pretty fast, but if he hadn't it'd be so insane seeing this ABSURDLY strong dude basically campus his entire way up the walls while kicking his legs around like a dizzy toddler 😂
The coach was frickin amazing.. he was super concise and articulate.. all the while being supportive and giving great feed back and he never put any negativity in his head.
Top notch video, not only was it funny to watch him slowly realize this is NOT a beginner, but it shows beginners a bit of what they should expect. Tristan is great. That's the kind of person I'd want as a coach. His approach naturally makes trying something new seem less intimidating. I'm a private teacher (music) and I can see on that teacher that he is EXCELLENT. I find that with individual sports, such as climbing and skateboarding, that for the most part your 'competitors' are really hyped when you do well. It doesn't matter if you are better or worse than them, your peers will support your efforts, cheer your successes, give you pointers to improve, and are there for you. Even though these sports may be 'individual', your are a part of the community, and the wins are shared by all!! : )

The way Tristan adapted throughout, constantly providing relevant feedback during and following the climb he’d seen Magnus do. To not be phased and adapting to the progression at that pace. To not show any ounce of jealousy at being surpassed. To the way he politely checked his suspicions without accusation of the ‘learner’ just in case. I mean as a casual climber, I've coached many people stronger than me. I've been coaching friends since climbing on V3s, but many of my friends are so strong with sports background that they are climbing V3/V4s on their first go - yes they can hold 40mm edges like it's nothing without training. Not the 20mm edges but 40mm edges full body weight holding fingers are more than enough to get thru V4s with technique coaching. I guided a first time climber thru a V4 that I could not do myself at the time. He had the strength, I had the knowledge. It's actually really rewarding. It made me feel like I finished the route thru him. Obviously at some point that becomes impossible, not first timer climbs a V8. Still, you get my point.

@Jason Voorhees maybe, but we will never know.

Is there any chance we can get a reverse coaching for triston as a follow up video? you definitely have the tools to take him up to the next level, he really seems like a great guy with a huge passion for his sport.
That would be dope
Great idea!
Genius ide
Yes.
He’d be too nice of a guy to lie imo
He's a great teacher. Loved the fact he got pumped to climb with you as he saw you getting better and better with your technique.
yes
Not a climber, but that was a real treat. Couple of decent human beings. Thank goodness there are still people like this left in the world.
@loiny zen yeah. Total legend.
Just decent?!
Most of us (climber) are like that the competition spirit isn’t something really present
Yeah I'm not a climber and I also thought this watching the video it's nice too see isn't it
@@fatmandoo lol, most decent:)
This coach deserves a raise. As a person that has never climbed before he would make me feel so at ease and comfortable with what i'm doing.
Tristan was incredible! A truly
great advocate of the sport!
He really was. I love how genuinely stoked he was about how much Magnus was killing it. No ego at all
Couldn’t agree more! Great job Tristan
So pedagogical as well. Would love to see a TH-cam channel of him just explaining the basics of bouldering/climbing.
Gotta admit it.. If I was paying good $$$ for coaching this is exactly what I'd want to receive from a professional. He's actually a very thorough and concise coach that seems passionate about his work and his students progress and safety. Awesome video.
Still, surprised the "Beginner" isn't harmessed.
That’s because this is bouldering not rock climbing.
@@hellacoorinna9995 LMAO NOT ROCK climbing
@@jazminrubio5685 idk if that's the reason 😂
Alot of the Coaches I've met in the rock gyms have been great like this dude. Climbing gyms have a cool community.
Watching magnus slowly speed up on each climb was hilarious. I was waiting to see if the coach would say anything but I think it speaks more to his character that he didn’t. This video was genuinely hilarious and props to the coach for being such a down to earth guy
Tristan is a legend! What an amazingly humble and unassuming guy. He deserves another episode with you!
Definitely!!
Bro he knew it was magnus
@@zarrowthehorse I think he started to be suspicious halfway through
Honestly, I'd love to see another video with Triston! He was so positive and humble, and seemed like a really fun, great dude to climb with!
A duo climb video would be awesome!
Exactly. Would love to see Triston more and more
would have been nice if he got him to do the routes as well show how hard/easy it really is, is really tough to gauge off guys like Magnus... need a normal human for control
This was hilarious. Tristan seems like a genuinely good guy, it would be fun seeing you have a regular climbing session with him at some point.
Hell yea. He seemed like such a solid guy. Patient, kind, encouraging, knowledgeable. Seeing Magnus climb with and coach him, even helping him finish the climb(v7) that he wanted to do would be awesome.
right, with roles inverted!
Yes!
That would be a nice follow upp
I think that's what Tristan was hoping for when he rushed to grab them shoes :D
That instructor was fantastic. He is one of those who makes you come back even if you don’t get it or even like it. He would encourage you no matter how bad you are. A+!!
This is like the forth time I've come back to watch this video. This coach is so awesome, the most amazing thing is that he seemingly had no ego, he was just happy you were progressing. I'm sure a lot of people in general would get insecure and gatekeepy about something they're so passionate about, but he was always positive and always encouraging.
the no ego thing is 10000000% why i love this coach. Not often u find that sort of quality.
Get a life
Im very new to climbing and the other people in the gym are always super helpful and excited when I finally beat my goal.
This coach is AWESOME…..!😬👍
Magnus did an AMAZING job of increasing the amount of skill he showed very gradually, so it was way more convincing that he was rapidly improving
22:29 though, the jig was up. haha
I think subconsciously even in his very first v0 climb there are details that show he is no beginner at all.
Yeah, he already knows you’re only supposed to use one color, an absolute beginner would just grab anything no mater what color it has…
@@Keneo1 No, not that. You can tell from how precisely and quickly he grabs holds and then he angles fluidly around them with zero apparent effort. A beginner would look rigid and struggling with holds.
@@Keneo1the instructor says it in the intro at 2:45
I never comment on stuff but what a class act Triston is as a coach. Great advocate for climbing and the gym.
Hi Tim, while we have you do you have any favorite recipes you'd be willing to share?
I don’t usually comment but this coach really seems like the chillest most genuine dude ever and I hope he reads all of our praise
I am in huge awe how this coach is using the language. For a foreigner which I am, there was not a single word or phrase that confused me. And this is a value worth helluva lot in terms of teaching - using understandable language. Kudos to this young man.
yet you use the word "helluva" lol

A professional can explain to professionals, an expert can explain to everyone.
This climbing gym is lucky to have such a talented, well mannered coach andI hope he is recognised for has excellent capabilities as a coach and just as a human in general. Magnus, in what I’ve seen, you are the better climber, shoot the better videos and do an awesome job, but Tristan on this evidence is the better coach!
Yes!! Such a great teacher!
I love the coach. I'd be down for a video of a climbing session with you two together. Without the disguise. He is such good positivity
He should just reverse it and coach him a session on his projects!
Agreed!
@@modahouddumbledore4114 Yes please!
10:20 that fall almost made the coach laugh 🤣😂
Most coaches anywhere would most likely have asked multiple times “are you sure you haven’t done this before” implicitly trying to call u out. But that guy just continues with his advice and keeps being supportive regardless of how high his suspicion levels are
honestly i think the AC/DC T-shirt and the mustache are wayy suspicious right from the start. I think he knew very early but had nothing to loose to play on with the prank. Great mindset by the young man.
@@ericastier1646100%, second or third climb he knew
Tbh I would take “are you sure you haven’t done this before” as a compliment because that means you’re a natural
Saying are you sure you haven’t done this before to someone that hasn’t climbed is actually quite a compliment rather than a callout
@@whiteyoshibrosit is if asked once, if asked multiple times even though they know you answered the question already is actually an insult as if you are lying to them because it is bothering them that you are that good but that guy didn’t ask once.
This has to be one of the best "undercover pro" videos I've ever seen. Magnus started to show some skill and dexterity slowly and then pulled back ASAP to keep the illusion that maybe what he did that was clean movement was accidental lmao absolutely loved this entire video.
This guy is everything a trainer should be- patient, knowledgeable, humble, kind… He excels. Good man. If ever I wanted to learn to climb, I’d be more thrilled to take lessons from him. ❤
Man the coach is so nice! Even when Magnus climbs the one he doesn’t manage to finish there’s no bad energy just support!!
Quite typical for the climbing community too. That's also part of what draws so many people to it
I mean as a casual climber, I've coached many people stronger than me.
@@slbaaron Story of mu life. I am short and heavy but love bouldering. I keep introducing new friends to the sport who immediately perform better than I do but I like to discuss projects with them and figure out stuff together :)
The way that he continued to support him even though he couldn’t finish the climbs himself🙏🏼
That showed such awesome character. Tristan is such a class individual as well as terrific coach.
As a beginner myself, this coach had incredible tips that I'm tucking into my back pocket. This was incredibly helpful! Love it! ❤
That big swing and falling flat cracked me up so much 😂 That was so well done. Coach was a really good dude too! Awesome job with this video!
So so good

What an awesome video !! Tristan is a great coach, he explained the basics so well !! And Magnus, you played the beginner climber so incredibly well, it was amazing. The bad footwork, the heavy breathing, the hips out, the falls… fantastic job
the footwork was actually so accurate xD
