So many people are entering this hobby every day, it never hurts to put up a video like this to address things that most experienced pilots know. This is a good video for every new DJI owner to watch.
Perfect Video - Totally have been having this happen to me lately... and my props take a beating... Remembered this info the other day - totally a Great tip.
Thanks for making this. I made this mistake twice because I believed the Quick Start Manual and performed the CSC to land. Then as I was at a convention watching other pilots I saw they were all just pulling down, and it was an "aha!" moment. No crashes since.
Thanks like others have commented I always hand catch, but when I used to land I just did the 3 sec left stick hold down, never even thought about doing a CSC. Off topic just did an upgrade of the motors and ESCs,as per your video which I watched after I had done the upgrade,so far very good. My reason for the upgrade was an unexplained fall from the sky, and after extensive review of the video and other flight statistics I diagnosed a faulty ESC/motor,I had lost confidence so replaced the lot.Keep up the good work, thanks.
I didn't know you could use both throttles. In Phantom 4 user manual it says bring the left throttle all the way down and hold 3 seconds to shut the motors off.
Thanks for this! I didn't give this drone enough credit for knowing when it's still in the air and when it's not. I've held the left stick down to bring the drone straight downward while I was flying plenty of times, and it never shut off. Now I know, and I can stop flipping the dang thing over!!
I tipped over the Vision+ twice, and then just decided to switch to the 'hand-holding and switching off' technique. When I got the P3, I just continued with that tradition. But this is what I will try now, as hand-holding always has its risk. Thanks.
Very useful and informative video. Thanks! Let's not forget that this hobby is in its infant stages relative to its potential, meaning there are likely TONS of noobs (like myself) who find vids like this useful. So just to be clear, holding the throttle stick down for 2+ secs while on the ground or while holding the phantom will shut the motors off. But while in flight, holding the throttle stick down will NOT shut the motors off because the Phantom will "sense" that it is lowering. And this "sense", apparently, is not due to a change in elevation due to GPS or a change in elevation due to barometric pressure. The "sense" is within the craft's own sensors. So it doesn't matter whether one is in GPS mode, Atti mode, or Naza M Manual mode. I hope I got this right.
I;ve been hand landing just because of this issue, motors reving up as you land, doing the CSC thing, This is a Great tip I will use for now on, Thanks so much!
Just performed my first flight and the first thing I noticed was when landing, using the user manual advice (CSC) caused the Phantom to tip slightly. This video certainly helps - will give it a go next time I land.
Thanks for this video.. My Phantom 3 came with a small quick start guide, no real manual at all. It didn't explain anything about proper landing procedure, and as soon as I would land I would try to shut down the motors by CSC and twice almost had a tipover .. Then I thought this cant be right and looked it up here.. All the manual had to say was "keep holding the throttle stick down after touchdown for 3 seconds to shutdown motors" The funny thing is I think many people don't know this and have had dangerous attempted landings, so they want to hand catch it instead of landing, that's actually the most dangerous thing in my opinion. DJI needs to improve their manuals..
Darin, like you, I am annoyed that dji didn't print out the full manual. The quick start didn't even state there was a full manual was available on their website. I could have avoided a lot of pain otherwise.
I appreciate this video and it explains a few things I saw on my Phantom 1 - yes... it is ancient, but still flies, - I have stuck to the throttle down as a standard procedure as a result and it works beautifully. Thank you.
Another great video. I've always hand caught my FC40 and plan on doing the same with my P3P (in transit). Quicker than maneuvering for a correct spot to land and you don't have to worry about a tip over.
That happens to me a few weeks ago. I don't really knew why, but I already taught about something like this. Since that every time I let it land automatically. But thanks, now I know how to do it right.😊👍
I use the left stick down to but I got a tip over today. I'm gonna buy either prop guards or some type of landing gear/grip thing until I become a landing master.
Are you using DJI and/or balanced props? I was using some aftermarket props, I don't think they were very well balanced and I was having some landing problems but after switching to DJI props have not had that problem. Also be sure the ground is level and be weary of wind.
Landed my Phantom 2 hundreds of times without incident, first flight with the Phantom 3, flipped it over doing the CSC... I think there must be something slightly different between them. Thanks for this! I was scared to go fly again without someone to catch by drone!
it happened with my P3, after desbalanced the blade forced stopped full at the ground and motor overheated in two seconds sound like a loud loud scream, i smell burned cables or something like that, but worked fine and no error appears, CSC sucks! thank for the tip, it worked for me, and hand catch too.
Thanks for the tip. Making that CSC movement when landing on a windy day and my phantom made a somersault and broke 3 propellers and somehow the receiver inside it. Won't be doing it anymore.
wish I had watched this video yesterday 😞 lol was wondering why it starting dragging itself along the floor. plus it was my first flight and luckily no damage and lives to fly another day. Great vids ATB steve
Thanks for the tips! I did an "auto landing" today on gravel and the drone started to wobble a bit so I got nervous and in panic pushed the two sticks together instead of left one down. Ended up with a broken propellar and lots of small gravel all over the drone and motors. A funny thing/question about this video at 4:07 : when you say CSC, does your dog think you say sit to him and he sits down because of that? :))
Yes, I had the same problem with near disastrous results. I gave up on the CSC and went to the other method of simply holding the "throttle" all the way down for 2-3 seconds. However, it didn't work the first time I tried it. Turns out the confusion rested on the definition of "throttle." To me, the throttle makes it go faster or slower. That would be the right hand stick. The left hand stick, which I now know the manual is referring to as the "throttle" makes the unit go up or down or rotate on its axis. Now that I have waded through the confusion, no further problems.
thanks for that tip !!!......for the past three years i have been using the csc method with no problems until the last month or so....for the last month it was tipping over every time i tried this shutting down sequence. It h had worked so perfectly for me for the longest time....i just couldn't understand for the life of me what was all of a sudden different ???....i took the props off and noticed that one side raced while the other went off hence the difference in balance and the subsequent tip over....i started to catch it for a bit which was a hassle and i think at times a little dangerous so anyway, i thank you for your tip.....it will greatly reduce my prop budget...cheers !!
I've had 2 tip overs on my last 2 flights... ( Luckily on grass). Think I'll get some prop guards to be on the safe side and your throttle only stick down from now on. Thanks!
You can also use the prop protectors! BTW NEVER bring the Phantom down too fast or the props will get tangled into their own turbulence and you will get very wabbly and likely to crash... Just my 2 cents.
+Tomáš Repiský Yep, that's called settling with power or ring votex state. The best way to get out of it is with forward airspeed. But the Phantom has tilted rotors to reduce the likelihood of this but your are right that it could still happen.

Great information for the newbies! I always hand catch. Thanks for sharing Simon - I'm sure there will be a lot of newbies with DJI new DJI Phanton 3 standard coming out on the 10th :-)
Shaun Matthews I hand catch a lot. Unfortunately, I've recently had a gimbal break after a tree encounter. I have to say I think the abundance of hand catches might have helped weaken the gimbal before the ultimate break. There is still significant drone stress on a hand catch. Go really easy on the hand catches if you want to increase the life of your stock gimbal.
+David Ison I'm very intrigued as to how you perform your hand catches having read that, for me it's simply: 1 - hover phantom within arms reach 2 - grip one of the legs 3 - stop motors with throttle stick which as far as I can see, can never put anywhere near as much stress on the gimbal as even the softest landing, which will always involve an impact no matter how small, while a hand catch has none, at least, not in any way I can personally concieve of safely performing one.
had the same thing happen with my Tovsto V2. It functions the same way. I figured out what I did wrong but good to get an explanation as to why. Although mine goes to idle speed when throttle is held straight down for a couple seconds with no downward movement. Then you can do a shut down or wait 10 secs and it will shut down automatically.
I'm new to the phantom drone. I've only used the throttle down. I'm surprised people use the engines off movement. I'm also surprised the engines off movement works when you are not landed. the amount of crashes caused by pushing both sticks in are shocking. I think Dji need to add an engines off button as unlikely as it is, being able to preform that manuvore in flight is a little bit of an oversight.
Why would any pilot pull the sticks in like this during flight? Think about the characteristics of it for a second, full downward yaw to the right putting it into a spin while trying to pitch it down and to the left. It's called the nausea shot I guess...
Great video and demonstration. This is a really useful tip to know, and I don't know why DJI didn't recommend this way to manually land and shut off the motor. I've tried the CSC method and tipped over my Phantom 3 and scratched the propellers :-( Thank you for the video!
Only got mine yesterday :-) tidy bit of kit, I noticed that my controller has a notch that holds the throttle in the full off position, then once it shuts down, i just give it a tap and it springs back to centre...
Great videos ! What is the difference between pulling the throttle (left stick down) and the same stick down and in to the bottom right - both seem to do the same thing. I have 3 Advanced and even in very calm days the landing in auto mode; the drone shakes a bit when landing and I can see some prop damage.
GREAT TUTORIALS !! Will you hold your phantom off the table and hold the throttle down to shut off the motors. This will prove that they wont shut down in flight as the aircraft should detect that it is not on the ground. I hope that makes sense ? Cheers Paul.
I did a video in this too but I'm not sure why my phantom transmitter have a lock on the left stick so when it's on the down side it have a little lock to it so u don't have to do the csc command
Simon, thanks for the great vids. I have a question for you? Have you ever experienced a tip over on engine start? I recently had my Phantom 3 Pro tip backwards and sustain a prop strike. I had just landed with the nose into the wind and shut the motors. Then, I started them again, it tipped backwards. The wind was about 10mph. I think as the motors start, there is that spool up before they go to idle and that extra lift plus a small wind gust tipped it backwards.
also theres a little notch at the bottom of the throttle to stop you from holding it all the way down. you push through the notch to turn off the motors.
Thank you...i had an accident few hours ago...since it was going in for a crash landing and i tried to catch it since i did not know how to stop...got badlly injured. my fingers
Wish I seen this. My brother and I just took his drone out and the darn thing tipped over and we could not get it to cut out doing the csc. Just kept running up. Picked it up to get it right side up and it just took off and crashed really hard.
Simon, have you tried any Canadian wines? We have world class from Niagara & Prince Edward County areas in Ontario and also from British Columbia. Videos are great and very helpful. Cheers from Canada.
I was guilty of doing this on my first few landings, I only found out by chance that pulling ONLY the left stick back switches the motors off. Luckily I was landing on soft grass at the time so nothing was damaged.
As a novice owner of a phantom 3 standard ( previously only flown Hubsan x4's fpv, Blade Nano QX fpv ) i've been watching various videos from different sources regarding tips and guides for the phantom. I've enjoyed watching some of yours and no doubt will watch many more, but i do have a question prehaps you could help with and its regarding how powerful my video transmitter is on this phantom. Im lead to believe that theres several different power versions depending on where the phantom was destined to be sold. At this point i should confess that i bought my phantom new from ebay but from china, so all instructions where in chinese not that that has been an issue. I have found though that i get warnings flashing up on my ipad about limiting range due to strong interference. Anyway any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks Dave
Hi Simon, Thanks for taking the time to reply, ive looked into this CE and FCC issue and it appears my Phantom 3 standard transmitter isnt the same as the transmitters shown on some of the youtube videos where one of the little ports on the rear allows you to change between Ce and FCC. According to page 20-21 of the P3 Standard online manual the DJI Go app controls the selection depending on the gps readings. I would like to change the aerial on the transmitter as i know from previous experience that £1 spent on an aerial is better than £10 spent on a transmitter. Could you advise me of the names of the connections and any leads i may need please? I welcome any tips or advise you may feel free to offer, meanwhile i shall continue to enjoy some more of your videos. Many thanks Dave
I can't understand why 3 people would dislike this video. It provides a simple tip that new users need to know.
Fat fingers using an iPad mini or iPhone/smartphone maybe, icons too close together. Must admit I've inadvertently done it myself.
So many people are entering this hobby every day, it never hurts to put up a video like this to address things that most experienced pilots know. This is a good video for every new DJI owner to watch.
Been doing the CSC method for ages, this is so much better! I feel like a twit. Thanks for the video!

Thanks from me as well! I was incredibly frustrated and you helped shed some much needed light. Liked and subscribed..!
Thanks for your video! I broke two propellers today doing that!

Never done it this way. Just held down. Also preferred when as you said hand catching. Nice video.

Oh dude, I should've watched before! I had my first tipped over on my first attempt to fly. Pretty scary when you are a beginner
Thank you! I always have this problem and it's nice to see an alternate option.
I appreciate this video and it explains a few things I saw on my Phantom 1 - yes... it is ancient, but still flies, - I have stuck to the throttle down as a standard procedure as a result and it works beautifully. Thank you.
I just pull the throttle down. I always do it dis way it's common sense. Love ur vids.
I knew this but thank you for your time and caring for others.
Another great video. I've always hand caught my FC40 and plan on doing the same with my P3P (in transit). Quicker than maneuvering for a correct spot to land and you don't have to worry about a tip over.
Keep up the brilliant work, Simon, great information😀👌🏻
That happens to me a few weeks ago. I don't really knew why, but I already taught about something like this. Since that every time I let it land automatically. But thanks, now I know how to do it right.😊👍
Hey mate what was the link to the video about hand catching?
I use the left stick down to but I got a tip over today. I'm gonna buy either prop guards or some type of landing gear/grip thing until I become a landing master.

John Dough just the standard props. I did land on boggy land tbf.
Cant really blame the new owners for doing it. Even the manual is wrong
***** Yes. exactly.
+GranVlog Yes. I discovered throttle down quite by accident, and have done it that way ever since.
+GranVlog and the earlier P2 shuts down with the CSC so I was also doing it on the P3 and had several tipovers...glad to see this video...
Yes, I followed instructions and did this, and so now I just do as you just described. I wish I had saw this earlier
What type of gimbal clamp was that?
This should be a Public Service Announcement. So true!!
Amazing and useful notes. Thank you. You're awesome! I was tipping my Phantom many times. Perfect video.
Landed my Phantom 2 hundreds of times without incident, first flight with the Phantom 3, flipped it over doing the CSC... I think there must be something slightly different between them. Thanks for this! I was scared to go fly again without someone to catch by drone!
I'm half tempted to make a drone channel so that people don't have to listen to 30 seconds of info over a 6 minute video.
it happened with my P3, after desbalanced the blade forced stopped full at the ground and motor overheated in two seconds sound like a loud loud scream, i smell burned cables or something like that, but worked fine and no error appears, CSC sucks! thank for the tip, it worked for me, and hand catch too.
Mine works as well after all, sorry for your rotors bro! I´m using the hand catch and left stick down for double precaution
As always, great tips Simon !
Thanks for the tip. Making that CSC movement when landing on a windy day and my phantom made a somersault and broke 3 propellers and somehow the receiver inside it. Won't be doing it anymore.
Learned this technique by accident this weekend. It IS the only way I would shut down upon landing from now forward.
I'm saving up for one of these, can't wait to get one :-)
RC Dean phantom 3 is going for 414 on Amazon but the price is constantly changing
P3S best deal
You are absolutely correct sir mine behaves the exact same way. Thanks. BTW Where did you get the brace/lens cap I want one.
really appreciate this, i was having this issue so i started auto landing which can be tricky. Thanks
Fantastic instructional video. Very good info as I will be buying a standard this black friday. Thank you.
Thanks for the tip. I was preferring hand catching after two tip overs. But then what if I wanted to land where I'm not? So, gonna practice this.
cheers for the tip I did the csc stop and mine did tip nearly lost 2 blades but brought it back up just in time
wish I had watched this video yesterday 😞 lol was wondering why it starting dragging itself along the floor. plus it was my first flight and luckily no damage and lives to fly another day. Great vids ATB steve
Great tip Mate!
Thanks so much for your expertise.
Thanks for the tips! I did an "auto landing" today on gravel and the drone started to wobble a bit so I got nervous and in panic pushed the two sticks together instead of left one down. Ended up with a broken propellar and lots of small gravel all over the drone and motors.

That would be the right hand stick. The left hand stick, which I now know the manual is referring to as the "throttle" makes the unit go up or down or rotate on its axis. Now that I have waded through the confusion, no further problems.
Thank you! Just got my p3standard yesterday and felt bad when I landed it hard due to the sticks together technique.
Thank you. Very helpful. I got one for Christmas and was doing it wrong.
can't see the link you mentioned in the description
Eccellente advice. This works also with P2 ?
That really help. since now i just use autolanding but if ur low on Batterie this is not the best way
Well this explains my crazy landings. Left stick it is for me. Thanks!!!
man. thank you so much for posting this. such a huge help
thanks for that tip !!!......for the past three years i have been using the csc method with no problems until the last month or so....for the last month it was tipping over every time i tried this shutting down sequence. Thanks mate. Sick of those flip overs on landing! Glad you're enjoying a good Aussie drop of red (-:

+Tomáš Repiský Yep, that's called settling with power or ring votex state. The best way to get out of it is with forward airspeed. But the Phantom has tilted rotors to reduce the likelihood of this but your are right that it could still happen.
Great information for the newbies! I always hand catch. Thanks for sharing Simon - I'm sure there will be a lot of newbies with DJI new DJI Phanton 3 standard coming out on the 10th :-)
Hand catch every time 👍
Shaun Matthews I hand catch a lot.
Thanks for the advice David.
+David Ison I'm very intrigued as to how you perform your hand catches having read that, for me it's simply:
1 - hover phantom within arms reach
2 - grip one of the legs
3 - stop motors with throttle stick
which as far as I can see, can never put anywhere near as much stress on the gimbal as even the softest landing, which will always involve an impact no matter how small, while a hand catch has none, at least, not in any way I can personally concieve of safely performing one.
Thanks a lot!!! It happened to me today and I'm wondering if there was another way! Cheers!
had the same thing happen with my Tovsto V2. It functions the same way. I figured out what I did wrong but good to get an explanation as to why. Thank you! On my 4th set of props....I assume same for 3 advanced?
Only got mine yesterday :-) tidy bit of kit, I noticed that my controller has a notch that holds the throttle in the full off position, then once it shuts down, i just give it a tap and it springs back to centre...
Cheers Simon.Downloaded fine. Thanks

cool tip, I wasn't aware of that...but this is a big help
GREAT TUTORIALS !!
Will you hold your phantom off the table and hold the throttle down to shut off the motors. This will prove that they wont shut down in flight as the aircraft should detect that it is not on the ground. I hope that makes sense ?
Cheers Paul.
Thank u very much it is very helpful
Is this will work with ph4 ?
Why dji isn't making this method the default one
rather than csc method ?
just one stick down for 10 seconds in middle of the air won't stop the motors right? example: vertical descent at full speed
+Simon Newton what is correct?? It stops or not??
Thanks you deserve that glass of wine 🍷
I did a video in this too but I'm not sure why my phantom transmitter have a lock on the left stick so when it's on the down side it have a little lock to it so u don't have to do the csc command
That's how i always stop mine is just holding the left joystick down, Amazing when you read the little book they give you, you learn lots lol
Thanks so much for posting this. Very helpful.
I think as the motors start, there is that spool up before they go to idle and that extra lift plus a small wind gust tipped it backwards.
also theres a little notch at the bottom of the throttle to stop you from holding it all the way down. you push through the notch to turn off the motors.
just thought to ask do you do any sort of training for others or can recommend a course for flying quad copters in the uk
Where did you get the clamp and cover?
Thanks!
Thank you...i had an accident few hours ago...since it was going in for a crash landing and i tried to catch it since i did not know how to stop...got badlly injured. my fingers
Thank you! I was having that issue.
Thanks mate !! It did help me !
Wish I seen this. My brother and I just took his drone out and the darn thing tipped over and we could not get it to cut out doing the csc. Just kept running up. Picked it up to get it right side up and it just took off and crashed really hard.
thank you sir about to take my first flight!
What is CSC stand for?
Simon, have you tried any Canadian wines? We have world class from Niagara & Prince Edward County areas in Ontario and also from British Columbia. Videos are great and very helpful. Cheers from Canada.
***** Quebec does that really well and some from Ontario...liquid gold.
Does this way of landing applies on phantom 4 pro v2.0
Excellent video... I have had that issue and now I know what to do! Cheers :)
if you are in the simulator and your off the ground and if you do the csc the drone drops out of the ski ! will that happen in real life ?
Sharply cutting the engines with the left stick and descending rapidly with the right? What do you think?
Thanks, I have done that a few times now I hand catch it..!
this is what i'm looking for, thanks!
what kind of tablet holder is that? I'm looking one to hold a nexus 7 tablet.
MikeAnnarose its one that comes with the phantom 3 advanced and pro. it will fit a nexus 7, however the p3 standard only comes with a phone holder
Very useful info! Cheers mate :)
I was guilty of doing this on my first few landings, I only found out by chance that pulling ONLY the left stick back switches the motors off. Luckily I was landing on soft grass at the time so nothing was damaged.

I have found though that i get warnings flashing up on my ipad about limiting range due to strong interference. Anyway any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks Dave
Hi Simon,
Thanks for taking the time to reply, ive looked into this CE and FCC issue and it appears my Phantom 3 standard transmitter isnt the same as the transmitters shown on some of the youtube videos where one of the little ports on the rear allows you to change between Ce and FCC.
Thanks Simon i will have a look and yes of course i will tell Will.
Nicely done
