    Hey Tom. Your channel is super helpful. I am a first time drone owner and just bought the Phantom 4. You are making this very easy for us all as the manual is not very good. Keep up the great work.

    Just a couple of days ago, ATTI mode has literally saved not only my Phantom 4, but also myself from lots of trouble.
    I didn't re-calibrate the compass and took off next to a huge concrete structure which probably had metal fittings in it and that metal has probably interfered with the compass readings. My phantom took off just fine, but then suddenly went into a spiral around the structure, not responding to controls properly. It would have been a definite crash if I didn't react fast enough and switched to A mode before landing the craft safely.
    That's why I would recommend any beginner to enable mode switching in the settings from the very start even if you don't plan to use them yet. This can save you lots of money and trouble in case you make a mistake (like I did) or something goes wrong.

    I see where some people don't know how to fly a drone and that's a good reason to equip aircraft with GPS, Infrared sensors etc.
    If you can't or don't want to fly in ATTI mode then don't. Myself, I like longer flying time and enjoy having full control of my bird.
    Each to their own and I think everyone should become proficient in ATTI mode or they aren't having all the fun they can.

    One more advantage of the ATTI mode:
    Fly first against the wind. Switch to ATTI mode. Start filming. You will get a very smooth ride, and you won't risk the propeller in the picture. I do that all the time.

    I just got a refurbished phantom 3 4k and took it out for it's first test run. It flew and performed fine, and I took some video, but I didn't realize the whole time it was in "A" mode but also I should mention it was using the GPS hold regardless. Glad to watch this to realize it can overide the gps or I would have thought the drone was defective on it's first run. Maybe they changed it since 2016 to use gps in A mode now?

    Learning manual VTOL in A-Mode is an essential training element if you want to become fluent in landing. VFR VTOL exercises are also great, as they can teach you to land in the case your UAV is not in visual range and you have to land or take off using FPV only.

  • @ifrtutor

    Excellent video as usual. Just wondering reasons why it's recommended not to catch-land the Phantom. Presumably safety reasons. But sometimes I find it safer, particularly if in strong wind gusts like I had yesterday, or where someone's pet is sitting right below ready to tear it apart when it lands.

    • @jc10907Sealy
      @jc10907Sealy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It puts stress on the motors as they rev up and fight you and you hang on to it - it's still trying to land if it's in RTH mode, or ATTI mode it wants to drift. Even though it's only a few seconds until you kill the motor, you can hear the motors rev up and watch the screen to see them peg into the red zone at times.

    When you get interference from antenas with magnetic field interference, when theses signal take over your drone, you do not have control even in ATTI mode. It will not respond.

    yup catching the phantom in air is safer, my P4 was going tipsy at landing allmost broke my props but but it came back on his fit haha like a car driving on 2 whiles and the goes back, that was a stress on first flight, soo do u pull left stick down and thats it?

      +Geoff Warren As mentioned in the video, the P4 features the sport mode while older models do not have that opportunity. But: you can use the ATTI as an alternative for super fast flights with your P3. Stay tuned and fly safe!

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ATTI is no big deal. As stated in the video, the difference is GPS positioning so if there is wind, expect a little drift in ATTI as opposed to P-mode, and that's it. The aircraft will be no more "sensitive" or "unstable" or anything. In fact, if there is no wind you will see only a slight difference in flying characteristics: In P-mode the craft more or less "stops" as soon as you center the sticks, while in ATTI it will tend to keep going in the last direction until you make it stop. No big deal. Go for it, you will love it.

    • @andykelly7321
      @andykelly7321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way you explained ATTI mode makes me ask one question, if by activating ATTI mode means if there is wind it will be affected, then what is the point of it? Why not just be safe and stick to P-mode to avoid the wind doing anything crazy? I have just ordered one of these and I am pretty nervous about flying it for the first time.

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andy Kelly For shooting pictures, film and just staying overhead, P (or GPS) mode (nomenclature varies a bit with version) is the way to go. If you want to fly from A to B, reposition the drone to look at another landmark, etc, or even if you just want to fly around like any traditional RC model, then ATTI is better. Think of P (or GPS )mode as a drone with *parking brakes on*. The drone fill fight not only wind, but also your maneuvering attempts. It will do its best to stay put in one spot, and by doing so it will be up to you, the pilot, to actively get it going in any direction. Which again is fine for small and gentle photo or film shooting, but as you will see, any major flight displacement will call for massive stick movements on the transmitter - and even then, will translate to only sedate drone movement. If I had to put the difference in one sentence: *In P (or GPS) mode, the drone will feel locked in a spot and more connected to you while hovering, while in ATTI mode the drone will feel more connected to you while flying around*. Don't be afraid of ATTI. Just experiment when there is no wind, move the drone from side to side, fore and aft. You will see it still does whatever you tell it to - it just won't pull the parking brake on you in the process. :-)

    • @andykelly7321
      @andykelly7321 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      corisco tupi Now I'm even more nervous lol, my goal is to simply fly it about and takes some videos, I am not planning on taking it out if it is windy and I am not using it just to fly and have fun. I just want to fly it to take some cool videos. So after what you explained I am best using it in P-mode right? I have never been so confused in my life haha :)

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andy Kelly Don't overthink it. Just get out there and fly in P-mode, you will see the drone flies itself, really. After you are comfortable flying, get some height, some 10 to 15m, put it in ATTI mode and go ahead and see how it feels. Don't go far just nudge it around and get the feel for it. If you think it is slipping away from you, just flip back to P-mode mode and it will stay put, rock-solid, waiting for the next move. Your best bet while learning to fly will be to comfortably flip the switch back to P-mode (or return to home mode) without looking for the switch on the radio. Other than that, relax. I understand you are anticipating a lot of rush but take baby steps, you will be flying in no time. Most important - don't fly over people, property or near airports. Don't replicate the crazy stuff that we see on the news and are doing bad things for the hobby and for the aerial photo business.

    Would you recommend setting the quad to multiple flight mode every time you fly--- Therefore you have only one switch to go from P to A? It would seem if you do not fly it in Multiple flight mode and you lose GPS you would have to go to the App and then change it to multiple flight mode and then move switch to A.----This could take valuable time to get control back.

      Can you program one of the two switches on the back of the RC to take a picture? I could use the video start stop button to stop the video without having to mess with the screen, but it would be nice if their was an RC option for taking a photo.

    • @PinchnerHouse
      @PinchnerHouse 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Collette The Phantom 4 already has a dedicated photo button; I believe programming one of the back buttons would do the same thing as the dedicated button. To take a still, you have to stop the video and then take the still. You can do this fairly quickly with the dedicated buttons (there's a dedicated video button too), but I think you'll end up with multiple video files each time you start and stop the video function.

    Everyone needs to know how to fly in ATTI mode, it can save your Phantom from a crash if GPS goes nuts. This is why I say if you are not comfortable with learning with your Phantom, it is well worth the cost to buy a toy grade quad like an X5 or X8 and learn how to fly by the seat of your pants. Also learn how to determine orientation without having to resort to headless mode. Besides that, actually flying a non gps quad is actually a lot of fun.

      The Mavic series don't offer a toggle switch for Atti mode (P and S only.) The Mavic will, however, switch to Atti mode if GPS signal is lost in low light - which cancels both P-GPS and P-Opti.

      @@tradewindaerialimagingllc2962 Thank you so much for your reply! So is there any other possibility to practice flying the drone as if there"s no GPS-signal? That would be very helpful.

    • @tradewindaerialimagingllc2962
      @tradewindaerialimagingllc2962 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, @@shb6910 , not with the Mavic series. Your best bet is to buy one of the small inexpensive drones with prop guards & no GPS (i.e., Atti mode only) and fly it as often as possible. Initially, fly it only with the nose pointed away from you (to avoid the confusion that comes with control reversal) and work on mastering Hover in place. Once you've mastered Hover, move on to Squares using Pitch & Roll (right stick) only. Then move to Square 8s (Squares in opposite directions that share one side in common.) Next add Orbits around yourself with the nose pointed outward (using Roll, or right side stick, to create the Orbit and Yaw/left side stick to keep the nose continuously pointed away from you. Pitch is used to maintain a constant radius in the Orbit circle.)
      When you've mastered all that, and only then, you can give flying the drone pointed toward you a try (flying indoors or within a fenced area to avoid flyaways.) This is where the prop guards will be invaluable as confusion of control reversal (resulting in crashes or flyaways) is almost inevitable - at first.
      Master all this (and practice at regular intervals to maintain proficiency) and you'll never be concerned with possible loss of GPS.
      Hope that helps.

    Hello. In this video, your antennas are not in the optimal position as noted in the dji manual. Is this because you are doing a close range flight and so the angle of the antennas are negligible? (I just got my phantom 3 advanced a few days ago, so I'm still learning)

      @rjwinterqwerty 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      usually when it's close it makes no difference. I've flew mine for a whole battery before and realised i only put one of the antennas out... Best thing to do is get a pre-flight checklist and go through it every time, even when just changing the battery...

    One question, do you need data on your iPad to have first person view on your drone?

    • @KenSeeber
      @KenSeeber 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it uses Wi-Fi or another radio band to send the video. Cellular data isn't used.

    tom what are the two antennas for on the p3 advanced, obviously one is for rc signal. Is the other one for that too? I thought it was rc diversity and the rc controller had a patch antenna for light bridge. Ive looked but cant find any info on this.

    So how do you change to ATTI in Mavic Pro? Looking at the title and the description of your video this is easily done, but no instructions for Mavic.

    My Phantom 3 Professional went into ATTI-mode twice on its own (controller remained in P-GPS) and both times it went into an uncontrollable operation and crashed both times.
    I've since RMA'D my quad and received a refurbished unit that works better.

    Great work.
    The transitions being stretched out helps you stretch out watch time without being so annoying that people leave. Hard to find someone who balances engagement well
