Wise words from a highly credentialed Elizabeth Rata. What really counts in a true democracy is the will of the voters. Politicians & so called academics need to stop standing in the way of the peoples will. WE WANT A PEOPLES REFERENDUM.
When I was studying anthropology at Waikato university in the late 90s , I attended a anthropology conference at the Novotel, Elizabeth presented a paper based on her phd thesis talking about tribal elites in 2000 , she received absolutely no response at all from all those ‘academics’ and wannabes , I however made a b line to her and congratulated her .
Elizabeth Rata has the number of our elites. I've grown so wary of the claims about the culture of groups of Kiwis from people who are clearly standing above and apart from them. They have exaggerated and distorted those differences in a power seeking game that has cost us dearly our social cohesion.
Im not in poverty and I don’t feel I’m entitled to anything so go and be racist in another country you got a cheek put every Māori under the same assumption you go get a education obviously the racism is clouded your judgement
..and remember that many of the ancestors of white NZrs left Britain in the 19th century to get away from a society where your way ahead in life was determined by what social class you were born into.- to a place where 'Johnny was as good as his master'..
All my South African friends say NZ is heading down the same apartheid they saw. Hence leaving and coming here. Who better to have experienced it? Btw, not just white South Africans.
As a maori male in my mid-60s, l have on numerous occasions made and point out these very same sentiments to my friends and acquaintances both black and white that have immigrated from SA to live in New Zealand. Who better to know about that direction on the political front than people from the African continent who have varying degrees of generational, personal experiences of this! ...first, they point the finger and accuse others ... ...then they become exactly a much worse version of what they were pointing the finger at once, they ascended to positions of power and influence...
So, we are not all New Zealanders now and it's all good I want to know where the Māori going to get the money from to live and operate in New Zealand or do they just expect all the Pakeha to pay for it all. Yep, the lady is spot on it is apartheid its racial segregation.
Oh I like your comment. Well done. " Who is going to pay new Landlord(s), once Maoridom get control" ? I think you answered that, but I wonder have they considered that question? I can not see Ngai Tahu &/or Tainui diving into their bank accounts to cough up - for anything. I have casual acquaintance's with former South African's, and what we are now seeing, they have been watching since 2017 (oh gee who was PM then?) - and what intrigues them - is most white Kiwi's do not seem to give a dam. They equate current Maori activity to that of the African National Congress (ANC), who are now the Govt of South Africa, who have driven that Country into the ground - not that you will here Simon Dellow of TVNZ introducing a news item on what is happening there.
@Gerald-p1g8l well like everything in life it's a reflection of where you stand. I stand with Elizabeth's reasoning. I guess it's old school reasoning based on rationale and fact that once made NZ a top country in everything.
it is a disgrace that oral submissions are limited, for no good reason. 4/5 national voters want it, 5/6 labour voters want it, time for a referendum so we the people finally realise how badly we are be represented by our two major parties.
Referendum only shows what the majority wants the minority can never win that’s why you want a referendum because you know the odds is that really fair no it’s another whitey way of so called democracy we won’t let you whiteys steal from us that easy look at the world that colonialism has reared its ugly head the indigenous just got shat on like fuck we’re going to let that happen here

She is right apartheid is not acceptable in a liberal democracy. You should not have different rights or responsibilities based on who your great grandparents were. WE are all equal in society . You have a small number of maori elites supported by a large number of useful idiots trying to take equality away to benefit only a small minority of maori
We’re only equal if you pay your debt to society nobody gave our land back they took it by force and repaid fuck all for there wrongs and think it’s ok if I took your house and land by force you would expect to be reimbursed in full not a tenth of its value wouldn’t you?think about that
I couldn't quite follow her first point on the importance of allowing people to opt out, it would have been great if she had elaborated on that a little. It would be great to hear her talk in a long form interview.
The ideology opposing liberal democracy in New Zealand is a dialect of Marxism. Classical Marxism proclaims the economic superiority of the Socialist transition ... the 20th century roundly demonstrates the abject failure of this notion (Soviet Gulags, Chinese "cultural revolution", North Korean "dictatorship of people's democracy"). The liberal democratic West is the political model for prosperity. Abandoning the notion of economic superiority, the neo-Marxists are now praising the "spiritual superiority" of Tikanga Māori. It is said that the "Maori economy" is worth about $70billion, in NZ. Given Maori over-representation in prison, lack of achievement in education and shorter lifespan - I wonder how much real value the inheritance of Tikanga offers? Tikanga does not fund John Tamihere's $560k luxury life style - not bad for running a "charity".
Thank you for your insight. I too am concerned at our countries direction. Sadly most politicians are too afraid to step outside their comfort zone and tell it like it is.
The overriding principle is that everyone is equal. It's in the american constitution, but apparently Maori don't believe in that in relation to NZ. There's racism right there.
Yes, I've always believed we were equal and working together and I am quite shocked to see how many Maori leaders do not see non Maori as equal at all.
We already have arparthide - pharmac funding for Maori and pharmac funding for all others. Councils using rates monies to Iwi because they are maori, maori hospital wards, extra covid funding for Maori and not all others and the list goes on. 😢
Paraphrasing but the last part where she said "You can socially and religiously identify however you like but your rights come from a political system." Pure class. Hit the nail on the head.

3:42 "both Maori and Colonialists" interesting choice of words, why not "Europeans" instead of "Colonialists" using words like that can instil a sense of separatism, which is interesting because technically Maori are colonists too, they came from the islands. I agree with what she said, I just noted the words she used because that can effect how a message is perceived. just an observation, that's all.
If you think about ingenious sovereignty, it's essentially calling for an independent state. With independent state comes with independent rights and responsibilities. Then this is exactly what the National government in South Africa used to call for through its Black Homeland policy (Bantustan). That government set up 20-odd independent states for different tribes, not internationally recognised of course, and even set up a few embassies for these states in the SA capitol. And the black workers from these Bantustan republics were effectively treated as aliens and migrant workers with no citizen rights and benefits. So Elizabeth is right, if indigenous sovereignty is the ultimate goal, then apartheid would become a reality and the question will be how do we draw the border line between the two states and how to vet and split the population accordingly. Is this route what the other side is trying to go down?
Elizabeth the professor should not be determining what civil liberties the rest of us enjoy. Political rights come from a majority public mandate. Do you want equal human rights in NZ. That question needs to be asked and enshrined into our government
I don't know why we're wasting taxpayers money on hearing the treaties principal bills when luxton said he'll stop it. No matter if most New Zealanders want it
Once again... I like many want these so called Principles of the Treaty to be shown to everyone where they are written down and enacted into law. They all stay silent because there are No Principles... They are a made up lie....

Hearing her brings to light academic freedom in a free society. Fair play. But her mere appearance here on The Platform betrays her strong social and political bias.
