    My experience (very condensed). I went hunting one year with my dad and I, and in a separate vehicle, my brother in law and nephew. We were in Weed New Mexico out in the middle of an 8000 acre ranch. It's a half days drive to the road from "The Ranch". Anyhow, my BIL broke down on the side of a mountain in the middle of nowhere on that ranch. None of us had eaten for 12 hours due to the logistics of the trip. My dad and I went out to pick them up. Then we got broke down. After almost freezing to death and starving. I alone walked back to the house. It took me 19 hrs as I got lost and walked in circles in the dark with no light. When I got back the only thing there was to eat was one of these ration bars and a can of Dr.Pepper, it was the best food I ever ate. My point is, when you starving, stressed out, cold and in a SHTF situation, the last thing you are going to think about is what this bar tastes like. You're just going to be thankful they are there for you to eat.

    You know, its interesting that the prepper community doesn't do more videos like this. Am very glad you're going with this idea and taking charge so to speak. Its one thing to have preps and what have you, and obviously preparations are key. However, living on a day by day with those preps and running isolated experiments/research into food/medical/preps will give folks a much greater insight as to what kind of things they could tweak and how they/others would respond to certain scenarios. Very glad you did this man. Look forward to more vids!

    Your expressions are priceless! When we went through our prep gear a few years back, we found that our SOS brand emergency bars had expired. Out of curiosity, my wife and I decided to eat some before we tossed them. I expected it to taste very bad but rather it didn't taste bad at all. Like you said you wouldn't make a habit of eating them but if you're hungry and out of food, these things are excellent! I like to carry Clif bars in my shelter-in-place bags whilst traveling. They aren't very tasty at all so I'm not tempted to eat them as I do with the Kind bars. Thank you for all of the deep research that you do. It makes it so much easier for your fans to put together proper kits.

    When we are so used to eating big meals or snacking throughout the day or whatever, you're right, we need an adjustment/detoxing period when we do these challenges for our bodies to get used to the new food/lack of food. But man, I wanna try this! Looking forward to day 2 and 3!

    Your aproach to do this challenge kind of last minute makes sense. If an emergency were to occur where use of these products would be required, you likely wouldn't have any sort of notice to prepare, so in that light, your test will be more accurate to a real world use of this product under the circumstances it was designed for.Kudos for doing it for us.

    I opened a pack to try one out but once it's open you lose that shelf life. Because of that I took a bar on every day hike and a couple on any backpacking trip. I can't imagine living 3 days on just those things though. They're so sweet and starchy. Great pick-me-up food but not good filler. I'd say drink a lot of water so you don't get too hungry. Good luck!

    *Peanut butter and honey* , both last forever and taste a lot better. Natural honey is antibacterial, can alleviate allergy if local and it's great quick energy boost. Peanut butter on other hand has the same energy density as these bars and it's full of nutrition.

    Thinking of the price point and longevity of the bars, do you think you could make your own either from scratch or a combination of other items to make a 72 hr pack?

    There must be different "makes" of these bars. I've seen videos where they are described as having a coconut taste to them. The one I tried is the same packaging outside, but it had 9 cube shaped "bars" in it that had the consistency of fine sand and had almost no flavor. It did make you feel a bit bloated after eating each one. I guess that's to make your body think you've have a big meal.

  • @CP140405
    @CP140405 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I had to laugh when I stumbled across this series of videos... I too have tried these bars... the taste like sort of lemon-flavoured sweetened sawdust... not an ideal survival food. But that is what they are. A survival food. They are designed to keep you alive as you bob around in a life raft or shit under a tree waiting to be rescued after you crashed.
    During the Aircrew Land Survival Course we went three days with only ejection seat pack rations for "food". After the second day, the leaves and bugs were starting to look might tasty. I would have kicked the instructors in the ankles and called them all sorts of naughty words in exchange for a couple of those bars.

  • @GainingDespair
    @GainingDespair 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hate to be that guy but 10 years ago I could have done this with ease. I was young, just moved out and when you stay broke stuff like "meals" become a luxury item. In all seriousness tho about the only time I ever ate was the days I worked at McDonald's.
    It was absolutely nothing for me to go 2-3 days without eating and while I know this sounds like BS it's essentially fasting (you can research it if you like it's common for the feeling of bunger to go away after a few days.) After a bit your body starts breaking down body fat and you for the most part lose the hunger feeling after awhile.
    If you where to drink a lot of water tho after not eating in two days it was pretty much near instant stomach cramps. I lose over 60 pounds in those two years so but that standard a meal for 3 straight days would have been an improvement.

    Some of the comments on here are implying you have to be brave to try these things. I bought a case of these exact bars in 2011 and have just started bringing a few out to test. I think they have maybe gotten a little harder over the last years so I take a small hammer and lightly tap them in a few places and it creates smaller pieces.
    I find the flavor very palatable. I will break one up and munch it while watching tv. I think their shelf life is gonna stretch out for a few more years without a hitch.
    I am not sure how you get all the tastes that you seem to have noticed while sampling them. To me they just have a medium kind of sweet taste and not bad at all. I would most definitely buy these again if I ran out. I guess I have eaten about 9-10 full packs now over the course of time.
    A couple years ago I added one to each protein shake I was making to put on a couple pounds since I am a naturally slender person.
    I guarantee it beats, by a 1000%, eating bugs, roots, bark, etc.... I would grab these over some canned goods in a bug out situation and as a matter of fact I have several full 9-bar packs as a mainstay in my bag.

    Did you weigh yourself before starting to do this? I would be curious if you did a weigh in in the morning of day one and the end of the day and so on, to see how or if there is any weight fluctuations. Its odd, whenever I see someone eat something, it makes me hungry, even thought you did not seem to be particularly enjoying it haha. I am also curious if, as this is mostly sugar, of there is an initial rush of energy and then a crash. Like, if you really needed to survive on something like this and trek across wilderness, would you think that this would be enough if you had to travel like 20 miles or so over the course of the 72 hours?

    is the individual bar wrapping/packaging suitable for long term storage? (i.e., will that packaging last the 5 year shelf life? Thanks

    • @supernintenjoe4859
      @supernintenjoe4859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No those individual wrappings are plastic. Plastic is not an oxygen barrier. You probably have 5 days to finish the whole pack once it's open like most ration bars.

  • @FredGandt

    Rather you than me :-)
    I looked at these a while ago (because everyone else was), and quickly looked away.
    Shelf life is kinda useful - for a remote cache - but especially for an urban prepper, the average kitchen cupboards, fridge, freezer , garage _etc._ contain massive amounts of food, being constantly rotated. If you get through all of that and still need the bars, you're f*cked.
    A lot of fresh food will last 72 hours in a pack, and fresh food that wouldn't last that long, almost certainly will if cooked.
    So, if your "bug out" system is constantly refreshed, there's little to no benefit with these bars.
    Also, dried fruits (including nuts), seeds desiccated foods, vacuum sealed, pickled _etc. etc._
    Really, there are so many other options that are better balanced, just as easy to use, and taste great!
    _"Designed for life rafts"_ - and that's where they belong.
    However, I'm supportive of your experiment.

      They should be fine more many years past the expiration date. From what I've learned, life boat want to regulate the rotation even if they aren't necessarily bad.

    I can see that they would support life on a boat with very limited exercise and calorie burning. You try running on 1200 calories on an emergency where you probably will be running and huffing weight around. Dunno. I will stick with the probars and stuff like that. And honey, it keep forever and has a ton of uses.
    I mean, I find a lot of comfort in food, I really don't see why I would torture myself with this.

    In all of these tests One thing can not be stressed enough. In an actual SHTF scenario. Even sitting still will burn more calories just due to stress. If you are talking a grid down scenario lasting a week as shown. th-cam.com/video/QPRCRk-Atx8/w-d-xo.html here and th-cam.com/video/9WrCI0W37zw/w-d-xo.html. The average person will be busy trying to make up for not having prepped enough. A lot more calories burned. I am going through your food bar videos as I am filling out my own supplies.
