  • Around half of all US adults born in the 1960s and 1970s lost an average of 5.9 IQ points due to having been exposed to toxic lead metal, primarily from leaded gasoline fuel.
    By the 1970s, lead's toxic effects on the developing brains of young children were well-established, but industry fought hard to suppress that research and prevent much-needed government regulations that only arrived in 1996 (US) and 2000 (UK) when leaded gasoline fuels were FINALLY banned.
