  • The Best Brickwall Limiter I Fabfilter Pro L2 vs Izotope Ozone IRC III vs Waves L2
    Some people praise about how good and how transparent Fabfilter Pro L2 is.
    I compared my favorite brickwall limiter from Izotope Ozone, especially I like IRC III option. This is the most transparent brickwall limiter plugin that I know. So let’s compare these.
    Also, many of you already know Waves L2 which is the most popular brickwall limiter plugin and hardware unit. I put this also for the comparison.

    Thank you for letting me reevaluate the IRC III algorithm of my Ozone 9, I wanted to buy the Pro L2 because I was fine with the demo (I quickly arrived at the result), but returning to Ozone with the right algorithm and the Character set well, I achieve perhaps superior results. You saved me a lot of money :)

    the pro-l is literally doing twice the gain reduction. the input on pro-L functions differently than the threshold in ozone, you have to tweak the settings to match the GR.

    I’ve been using Fabfilter l2 for a couple years now. But recently I loaded up Ozone 5 irc3 and I was really amazed Omar how good it sounds. The parameters are more accessible too. I’ll have isotope do the heavy lifting and fabfilter after for true peak limiting. Sounds very good to me.

      @@alreadyit that’s a good question. Izotope should have a legacy products support page, that would be the first place I would go and ask Izotope. And there are “other avenues” to acquiring it too I’d imagine, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

    오존이나 웨이브즈처럼 트레숄드를 내려서 적용하는 방식과 팝필터처럼 게인을 올려서 적용하는 방식의 경우 1.7dB의 값을 동일하게 봐도 괜찮을까요? 팝필터의 경우 기본 2.0dB 어떤 경우에는 3.3dB까지 리덕션이 적용되고 있는 것으로 보입니다!

    • @HongDaniel
      @HongDaniel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      좋은 질문이네요 ㅎ
      전통적으로 브릭월 리미터들은 트레쉬홀드를 내렸을때 게인이 진행이 되는데, 팹필터는 그 표현만 다르다고 생각했거든요. 개인적으로는 플러그인이나 하드웨어에 리덕션 미터가 정확하다고 믿지않아서 (컴프레션양은 듣는 걸로~) 최종단에 LUFS, dBTP, 등으로 비교해서 진행했구요.
      둘의 실제 리덕션 및 게인의 차이가 있었다면, 0.5dB 안이었을 겁니다.

      he didn't say anything about IRC IV tho... I was trying to find out what's the difference - all I learned is that IRC IV is an improved version (at least from the perspective of Izotope) to IRC III but they act fairly similarly. I'm not sure, maybe there's a difference I'm missing?

  • @frankjaegervandlarssen6657
    @frankjaegervandlarssen6657 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You drive the L2 much harder. The target should be actual gain reduction. It´s much higher on the L2 because your attack/release settings favors transients and will shave away some of the low end sustain.

    • @radiandrzgaming8708
      @radiandrzgaming8708 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. This isn't even a comparison. IRC is hitting 1.7db of gain reduction while Fabfilter is hitting 3.3db of gain reduction. Fabfilter is doing twice the compression.

    L2 is also very useful for controlling spikes without compressing the whole channel, however i recently did a blind test on L2 vs. Fab-Filter Pro L2 and found the same thing, FabFilter Pro L2 got muddy and lost the bass, I have Ozone 9 but have not tried the Maximizer on that yet

    You are pushing Ozone IRC to 1.7db of gain reduction while pushing Fabfilter to 3.3db of gain reduction. Fabfilter is doing twice the compression. I'm interested in hearing this again with equal amounts of gain reduction between the plugins. Push them all the same amount in the comparisons. Maybe try light with 1.7db reduction on all and then a seperate one with 3.5db reduction on all.

      A limiter is just another compressor, and a couple of high pass compressors before the limiter will allow you to use less and preserve your kick and bass.

    • @gunjabeans
      @gunjabeans 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. The technical definition is based on compression ratios:
      Compressor < 10:1
      Limiter > 10:1
      Brick Wall Limiter = Infinity : 1
      You can think of it as a Brick Wall that no amount of dB will get through.

      @@noisehxbit2466 I like waves but I process kick and snare on seperate bus now, limit all other instruments and then use only mild limiting on the Master Buss. I am using compressors before the waves limiter that have a sidechain setting(MAAG Magnum and TR5 Master Compressor) allow lower frequencies to pass through so it doesn't kill my kick. This is new for me, but legendary engineer Bruce Swedien says he avoids limiters on drums. I am interested in trying Weiss and TDR limiters because I liked the sound of them in videos, but still Waves L2 for now, with second limiter over everything but the drums , parallel compression on the drums, hi pass compression and only mild limiting on the master track.
