are the greens that sprout up like green onions?
Yes, some of the ones sold in supermarkets are the young bulb onions sold for the greens. Occasionally, they may sell true bunching onions that are grown only for the leaves and do not develop medium to large bulbs.
If you want larger bulbs you need to cut off half to 2/3rds of the length of the green leaves and flowers during their growth. You can use the greens for salads. Then more energy will be diverted to bulb formation and new shoots will form and the bulb will get larger.
Thanks Jeff. I've divided cut them back before, but they never grew bigger than a golf ball size, but were still good! :)
I understand that our food is genetically modified so we cannot grow anything similar to the original. You would have to have heirloom seeds to be able to continue your own crop from year to year. Thoughts?
@@rats2themoon not true. You just need proper nutrients and soil type for what you're growing.
Heriloom seeds are wayyyyyy smaller fruit/vegetable becuase their "not" modified so they will be much smaller but way more flavour. GMO doesn't mean it's made in a lab... GMO can Simply mean they purposely took pollen from one type of realllly nice onion weather you're aiming for the flavour of the onion the size attribute... Or cross a very large onion with a very flavourful onions pollen so you have a Onion that is huge and have a good flavour.
For example. Watermelons Never ever looked like they do now, they were way smaller and not as juicy and watery as they are now and they were looooooaded with seeds.. now they have been cross pollinated so many times over the years to be huge / full of water and flavour and some are even bred to have no seeds and then they clone The plants with no seeds to get identical babies from the mother plant, you buy The watermelons it has no seeds so no you can't regrow those ones you need a cutting from the original. Same with banana trees, you can't get real bananas anymore they are all one type of banana, there used to be tons of banana types now there is only one, and soon bananas will be extinct because there is pets/diseases that are destroying the trees, there isn't different types of banana that was more resistant to certain disease anymore or certain pets so pretty soon in tie future there will be no bananas at all they will be extinct thanks to humans....

@bad boi I didn't have too much luck with celery it grew a bit then stopped. I got to retry this year. I grew potatoes from scraps so that was fun except my neighbors chicken kept trying to dig them up

Hi Veronica, You’re welcome! I love harvesting the greens like scallions. Make sure to change the water daily or every two days to prevent bacteria growth. You can also plant the scraps directly in fertile potting soil. Thanks for watching! 😊Misilla

Never knew we could do this and get seeds. Did it with carrots and beets this spring. I have good number of flower stakks on carrots. Nothing yet on beets. I will definitely try this.

Did you get big bulbs or small? I’ve only gotten small ones. I have some in the ground now that have not yet popped up, we shall see. I’ll hopefully have updates on this in my September Garden Tour since I already did August.

Boen they were just yellow store bought onions 🧅. Not sure if the name since I threw out the package. I did just put them in soil last week with no soaking in water prior to.

They should work! Just keep in mind that a new onion won’t appear, just green onions. It’s always better to plant sprouted onions because you know that they are able to sprout and it will take less time. If the onion was not sprayed with any inhibitors, you should get fresh green onions!

I'm going to start doing this😁... I cut up _at least_ 1 onion a week making meals and I eat lots of green tops.
I wonder if greens from "hot" yellow onions have a stronger taste because I've kinda grown tired of all the Walla Walla greens I've been munching on this Summer. I may experiment and re-grow every type of onion I can get my hands on to see what greens are the tastiest and then save the seeds from my faves!

Just came across you as I am looking for reasonable hints and tips. Thank you for an informative video, especially in how to cut the an old onion.
The only point I would like to make related to the depth you plant the cutting/shoot into the soil. It's not very deep and the ones I have done last week are buried deep. Hehehe! I will try your shown method and plant much nearer to the top of pot and see what happens. Appreciate you sharing your expertise and knowledge. Peace and kindness with prayers. 👌💐

@@LearnToGrow1 I asked an old farmer about regrowing and he said that the bulbs will be much larger if you plant 6 inches deep. But he could have been pulling my leg. I don't know if it is worth trying.

Hi Misilla! Have you tried sprouting the onion bottoms like in the thumbnail, and then planting only the roots, leaving the "slice" above ground? I'm regrowing a red onion this way, and it's produced hardly any greens but has formed two small bulbs above the soil. Other varieties have burned off when attempted this way, but red seems to be chugging along. No idea how big they'll get, but it's exciting!
Good afternoon! Yes, I've grown them from the bottom only, but they seem to grow faster when I removed the layers around it. When you don't cut the bulb in the middle in half, it is more likely to grow more greens, as shown in the video.

You can still plant them this fall and they can overwinter, just mulch over it if you have very cold winters.

Once I planted my scrap onion after growing the roots in water, my green stalks grew like crazy!! They are so long that they can’t stay upright anymore - what do I do now??!
Hi you can cut some back and use the greens like spring onions. Since it's fall right now, it won't grow much again till spring time and will stay dormant. Mulch it if you live in a cold climate. Thanks for watching!

Also do I need to transplant into a garden?! We are growing all our veggies strictly indoors since we do not have the necessary means to plant the traditional way... do you think our onion will grow?
Hi Diane, you can plant it in a pot, but you will have to use supplemental lighting to support growth. It needs full sun, at least 6-8 hours per day. If you grow it indoors put it under a grow light for at least 10 to 12 hours per day. You can slowly acclimate it outdoors when it warms up if you decide to put it outside which will do better. You might get seeds this summer or a small bulb, either way it is fun to watch it grow. 😀

Can you use the long greens as chives for cooking, do they tast like an onion.
Yes you can and they taste like mild onion
So if you grow scraps you'll get (little) bulbs and if you plant the onion whole or the bulb you'll get flowers < seeds?
Hi Narelle, From my experience regrowing onions, this has been consistent, but have heard from other gardeners getting full size onions. When regrowing a bulb, it is going in its second season, a biennial plant, which means it flowers on the second season and most likely will go to seed. I’m going to keep trying to see if I end up with larger bulbs and also plant the ones that regrew into small bulbs. Thanks for watching. Misilla

I forgot a half of an onion in my fridge for maybe 2 weeks. It's sprouting white vines on its bottom and sprouting some from its center. Can I just put the whole thing in a pot of soil?

Hi yes you can. As mentioned in the video, the scraps usually do not grow new onion bulbs only on rare occasions. They will most likely flower and produce seeds.

Hi from experience we’ve only gotten small bulbs, however a friend of mine said that they got a medium sized bulb from a scrap they grew. Onions are biennial and will flower in the second summer and should produce seeds before the fall.

If you have multiple plants they can cross pollinate and the seeds will have better genetics. ☺️

Hi Natasha, I didn’t record it, but you can just shake and rub the flower head into a bowl or bag and the seeds fall out.

How long did it take for ur onions to grow as flowers at 2:50 and what exactly caused them to sprout into flowers?
Hi Adam, Bulb onions are biennials which means if they are left in the soil they will eventually flower the following year to produce seeds. The first year it will grow a bulb which is harvested. The one that bloomed was planted from a whole onion from the previous fall. If you plant the onion bottoms or the center with the shoot, it should flower within 3 months or so.
And what will happen if u plant the onion bottoms by themselves? Will they turn into small but new onions or flowers that provide the seeds and so forth?
Hi Adam, Yes you may get small onions…we’ve gotten ones that are the size of golf balls or smaller. Sometimes they flower instead and don’t form small bulbs.
And can they simultaneously form new bulbs and flower and how or why do they flower in the first place?
Hi Adam, On the second season of the onion’s life, it naturally flowers and produce seeds to carry on future generations of the plant. Yes, it could form a small bulb, but if left to flower the energy will go to developing seeds at the expense of the bulb.
I tried that and had a total fail with 4 onions. Not sure what I did wrong.

Hi Angela, Make sure to keep the soil moist to stimulate root growth of planting. directly in the soil. Cutting the bulb out vertically as shown has given me better results as you are not cutting the initial bulb in half. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! 😊

Hi it would need leaves to photosynthesize and store sugars into the bulb.
