update on my regrow of onion butts. lol I had a cluster that grew below grown... about 4-5 the size of ping pong balls. used some of them... and stuck some in the refrigerator. finally finding those... with sprouts... replanted them like you would "starts". the stocks got really big and beefy... like 3/4 inch in diameter like a leek. i assumed they would bolt... and the DIDN'T. so... i got curious and repotted them to survey their progress. well... they are about the size of tennis balls now. Will let them do their thing... until the top- flop of the greens. But... I am so thrilled. basically.... my only investment was the original onion... plus soil/water and have 4 now. tbc....

This video was really helpful.... I'm glad that there's someone out there who's willing to give us amazing tutorials on how to grow seeds and other stuff. I tried it and I'm really getting results from my onion scraps. I just hope the third video comes out soon because I really hope I'm not too late to split the onion scraps
I also regrow onions this way. I have found that cutting off the old roots initially is a good idea. I get good new root growth in 2 to 3 days, and then plant them out. Some send up multiple shoots,and I have found that it is best to let them start to bulb before separating them. Even the bulbs that end up without roots will grow new ones and thrive.
Thank you, it's a very useful tip! I don't know if you know about another useful thing with regard to onions, which I discovered by accident. That is to make a potent, very nutritious liquid plant feed from the water that you used to rinse an onion with. During a time of severe water restrictions my family and I began to collect waste water to use it for the garden. We put a small plastic tub in the sink and transferred water from that into plastic buckets. We also rinsed onions under the tap before chopping it up. In this way the little bit of moisture at the cut ends ("onion juice") ended up in the buckets, mixed with the water we used to rinse the onions. After a while we noticed that if the water in the buckets were left to stand for a while, it became more and more smelly. Natural sciences are not my strong suit, but somewhere I read that fresh onion tends to attract microbes or bacteria from the surrounding environment. It certainly seems that something mysterious happened when we left water that had even a little bit of onion juice in it standing overnight. The water became more and more smelly and cloudy, and plants thrived on it, they were so clearly revitalized. Since then we've been using it regularly, since we eat onions with practically every meal. At the moment we are considering utilizing it on a larger scale so that more plants could benefit. It helps that we've never cleaned the buckets -- it creates the ideal "breeding" environment for the onion water microbes. The smellier the water becomes, the more nutritious it seems to be. It's no use dropping actual onion pieces into the bucket -- that just creates a particularly revolting smell without noticeably affecting the water it is floating in. It's the juice (even just a tiny bit of it) that is able to turn the entire bucketful of water into potent liquid plant feed. Wishing you all the best!!

Hey Caitlin, I've split a few dozen over the last 2 years...you'll know they are ready when they simply split on their own. You can just pull them apart with your fingers and they are their own plants! Cheers.
I'm just here ... liked, subscribed and "patiently' waiting on part 3. Homeschooling my daughter and she's finally taking a "let's do it" interest in planting/replanting our foods. We are in Florida. And she just planted some different seeds from peppers and they're sprouting. I've got no clue what I'm doing or what to expect... so thanks for your help here as she demands answers on what to do to plant this onion we are about to cut into. ... hope it's ok to do this year round down here. Hey brother, update. I've done 5 white and 5 red. The red's sprouted in two days on two separate immersions. The white's have done little to no sprouting, but the centers were starting to grow, so I planted them after 4 days in water. Looks like they are taking. What are your thoughts about just planting them in soil before the soak? We go through a lot of onions with canning and all, so If I can cut down on the cost outlay, beautiful! But at the end of the day, it's about taking care of HIS bounty. God Bless and Happy Easter brother!!!
White ones are so weird Maverick! They've been giving me nothing but trouble over here as well! As for planting straight up...yeah, if you can get the soil to perfect moisture and temperature, people do it with great success! Right on buddy. :)
I'm doing the exact same thing growing an onion. The roots are impressive and tiny green shoots have come out. Should be ready for planting into soil very soon. I didn't know about cutting off the excess onion flesh. I would've planted it straight

Thanks for the tip of cutting the excess meat after it grows. I had some onion in the fridge that started sprouting green tops, so I just put it in dirt as is. After watching your vid, I cleaned it up, while cleaning I noticed that roots were growing between the layers of the onion.
I’m wondering, and will try this year, to cut off the old harder roots. I think the onions spend a lot of energy trying to break through those hardened cured roots. It’s a good thought. I have sort of cross cut into the hardened roots in the past and it dies give place for the new roots to break through. I should be making vids rather then giving all my ideas away. Lol.
@@BlessedBaubles I've debated cutting off more of the old roots and rooted end. The plants don't seem to have trouble sending out root systems so I just never bothered. Could be a cool experiment though! Cheers

We got what appears to be green bunching onions growing like perennials in our new flower bed. It's very vigorous. Neighbor has some that was in bloom last year. Now back again with that familiar tubular leave bush,lol. Onions do really well down here. Id reckon I could find a variety of bulbing onions that could reseed itself here. Only pests to it would be us being tempted to just pluck em all up!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I don't know! I've never tasted them. I just got the little bulbettes and planted them a few weeks ago. They're only about 4-5 inches high. I'll try to remember to let you know, when I do. I only have about 6, as there was a problem. The shipper got them to the post office the day after I ordered, but the post office took over a week to deliver them, and most of them molded. A week, from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Phoenix, Arizona? One major hub to the major hub the next state over? Normally 2-3 days. And, the real covid stuff didn't start here until over a week later! Sigh.

I planted my onion 4-5 days ago (before I saw this video) and I might have done it incorrectly I planted the onion slice directly in soil and just kept the soil moist. So far I have two of those new sprouts coming out of the soil I'm tempted to bring it up and cut the excess onion from the slice like shown . Should I? or just let it sit in the soil as is .

Hey Angela, thanks for watching! Yeah, that is strange...the roots pop out within days usually. If it goes longer than a week, then most assuredly the bulb was too old to re-root. Might have to try again. :(
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms could be high ph water to. Found out the hard way that some starts and cuttings don't take to it very well. A teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar per gallon usually does the trick. Can't hardly kill rosemary, but it killed 20 rosemary cuttings. Not one root bud.
I restarted a red onion in a similar way a little over a month or so ago.. I just kept changing the water.. Once the green shouts popped up and i could determine how many there were i peeled and gently tore off the old outer layers.. New roots will start to grow between the layers just fyi.. I seperated into 5 individual (no old onion) sprouts with roots (USED A SHARP KITCHEN KNIFE TO CUT APART) set in water until roots settleted (i would recommend turning everyday so the onion shout wont warp if your starting in a shallow dish) i have all 5 of them in my garden now.. shouts are 1 foot+ and new ones poppin up.. Will update when i have one 🤗 4-20-20

I cant get a white or yellow to do any where as well as the purple and red do. i have two yellows going but they are taking FOREVER to sprout up but the roots are growing so im not giving up just yet.. I have heard some folks say that the replanted onion wont form anywhere near the same size onion and thats if it does form one.. Most go straight to seed. Im okay with either its a lil garden project i started with my 4 year old to see what can be regrown so far weve done romaine lettuce and celery with great success! I have started a few more purples and they are already in the garden growing shouts like crazy so *fingers crossed*
Hey Rick, thanks! It all depends on what stage they are at and how the root systems are. As quick as each shoot declares it's set of roots, divide them up... Shoots need to be spaced 4-6 inches apart. Cheers!
Its a great question Paul. The earlier the better in my opinion. The issue is, we need the roots to differentiate themselves and be able to determine which roots belong to which shoots. Once we can do that, we're golden and we can divide away! Cheers Paul.
I let my shoots grow, then cut away the white, gently puul away the stems, plant them in a pot. I get anywhere between 2 to 4 onions per cutting. I do this during the winter, putting my plants in the window or using a small grow light as we get snow.

Thanks Ari. Yeah, when the roots stall out like that in water, I always move them on. Honestly, the soaking in water part is just to see if they would send out viable roots. Once you see them, they can definitely be planted! Cheers!
I'm looking forward to it getting warm enough outside to transplant my onion and other veggies that I started over a week ago. It has 3 "shoots" above the soil in the pot that I have it in. 2 of the 3 are about 6 inches tall while the smaller one is about 4 inches. How many bulbs do you think i could put in a 7 gallon grow bag? And it's autumn here in Australia, is it worth planting still? In Queensland our winter only lasts like 1 month and don't usually go below 6-7 degrees at night during that cold snap.
Its all about sq area, not volume (gallons). To maximize bulb growth, onions should be at least 4 inches apart from the next nearest one and 2-3 inches away from the side of the grow bag. Cheers, have the best growing season!
How soon before 3,4&5?? Getting anxious to see results. Made a large batch of beef soup and saved 5 root sections (accidentally saved a top...duhh) After a day and half, two showing signs of rooting.

Next one should be up in around 2 weeks as we plant some out in the garden....but this is being done real-time in Canada, so it'll follow the same timeline as doing seeds. Hi we transplanted ours in mid March. Approximately how long do they take until harvest. We are in zone 9b and it's getting hot. We have peaked in the dirt and they are all round tiny balls now :)

Sure Rachael. I haven't found a way to reliably separate them early on. The shoots haven't defined which root systems they are attached to, so dividing them up at that point is risky. If you wait, they eventually adopt a pathway of roots and you can actually divide them by gently pulling them apart! Easy peasy!
Question; You showed how to plant a red onion with large sprouts, can you show how to plan the onion without any sprouts like you mention at 0:48? What depth? cover them? how much flesh to cut off since there are not shoots to go by? Thanks,
They all get planted the same. The shoots come up fast. If you have a slice and it doesn't have the shoots, quite likely it might not work. They get planted the same depth, and just cut off as much flesh as possible to eliminate rotting.

Should I plant the rooted base, even if there are no green shoots showing yet? Also, what about the method where you (very carefully) cut most of the flesh of the onion off vertically (versus horizontally, as shown here), leaving the green shoot as a core, and then plant it? I'm currently trying both methods, but worry that the horizontally cut ones with no green cores (shoots) will run out of stored "food" before the shoot is able to grow.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thank you! Have you tried the other method, too? It isn't nearly as easy and you don't get to use as much of the original onion. But, one that I planted last Friday already has a shoot almost two inches above the soil, whereas the tip was just slightly below when I planted it. And the others that I planted, that had several inches of shoots coming out of the original onion, are all a darker green and longer as well. The base that I used your method on hasn't appeared to have done much of anything. And, I moved it from the water and planted it at the same time. I'm hoping that changes! (I have two more to transplant today.) My transplanted cut off beet tops seem to be doing well. Time will tell if they develop any working root system. (I'm hoping for edible greens, not roots, in this case.)

Thanks Sakis! I'm about a month, all of those onions that sprouted multiple shoots will have to be divided. You just cast grow bulbs that close together. So the next video update will likely be demonstrating that process, as well as a general update on all the onions! Cheers!
Its definitely coming Prachee...yes, you need to split multiple onion bulbs if they are growing together. The same rules apply as if you were to plant the crop normally from seed or from sets.
I’ve had great luck just putting the cut off part in damp soil, barely covered with soil. In 2 days they had rooted and after a week I have green coming up.
FYI, if vegetables are from country or origin different from where you live, this could be your problem. Department of Agricultures usually will turn through machine to kill off any and all pests. This also effects the seeds/ plants.
All my thyme plants die as soon as I replant them. They start turning brown. Am I watering them too much? I put them in the sun in the day time and bring them in at night
@@elizabethmoore5069 Yup, once they get big enough. I don't like to separate them until each shoot defines its own root system..otherwise you could kill one of them. Sometimes they take longer, sometimes they do it pretty quickly. I have about 30 of them that I will be dividing, so just picking the right time to actually FILM it is the challenge.
Waitin patiently on that seperation vid. My results are varying drastically. My yellows have some decent sized stems sprouted (bout 6-8 inches) but arnt looking great since all the chilly cloudy days weve been having. One red cluster has sprouted WELL beyond the pot. Prob 14 inches. Hes growing w some seeding carrots. The other red cluster might be the greenest but the stems have BARELY grown in the last two weeks. Theyre prob 2 inches. Weird.
That is a wild range Adam! Same soil and temperature conditions I'm assuming? Crazy! All of my reds have multi sprouted...whereas only one (out of 10) of my whites has. I don't have quite the range in growth though....the ones that took and had roots are about the same. I haven't put mine outside yet though.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms hey thanks for the reply. Yep. My 1st time growing anything so I tried to keep it simple. Just grabedd a couple planters we never used (2 gallons each maybe?) And some cheap miracle grow from the store. The only diff is the long stemmed onion is w rootless carrots (regrowing for seed). I didnt think aboug it b4 but since I dont think the carrot root will regrow that onion probably has way more root real estate. Not much it has to compete with. The other 4 onions are sharing a planter w each other. That may have something to do w it. I put mine out everyday for sunlight when theres any to be had. Cant wait for the weather to warm up so I can transplant them into the raised bed I made. we r still getting into the 30s at night. Im scared thats too cold for onion. Gonna sow some spinach in an egg carton this weekend though to try and get some seedlings. I hear thats good for colder shady envionments.
@@YBahjatt Hey Yasser...you gotta do it when the shoots themselves have defined which roots they belong to. Last thing you want to do is pull them apart and have 2 with roots and then one with none! You don't even need to cut them...they just pull apart!
My onion cuttings are not growing roots after many weeks. No sign of growth. No sprouts. I live in Canada and the onions were from USA. Could they have been irradiated?
This is my 2and vid I've watched of your channel... onions caught my eye because we juuuust replanted two whole onions that had sprouted greens in the bag... we dis not root first. We simply planted the whole onion in the garden about a week ago and man have the shoots took off... but now I'm wondering also.. will they root now ?? We shall see.. lol.. Q... I'm new to gardening ISH,, so I have in my window still Thai Basil cuttings from the store... I heard if you put a little sugar in the water it helps feed them and grow roots faster.. any truth to this ?? Ps.. I've subbed and going to binge on your plant vids a while. Thanks Tammy, that's awesome! If the onions have sprouted that much greenery, rooting is almost assured. As for sugar, some people claim it can help, although there's no science behind that one as a rooting agent. If you're gonna try it, do it in very small doses. Cheers!

It's day two and my onion looks shriveled. I didn't remove the water until day 3 unfortunately. And it was on the sun, i hope that didn't hurt the plant too much so it can still grow.
You should/could talk about the need for adequate water & fertilizers throughout the year, then later, folding back the greens to make the bulbs grow instead of the greens.
Most definitely Mark! Although I subscribe to the rule of thought where we "feed the soil to feed the plants" so I don't really use additional fertilizers in my garden. But definitely when it becomes bulb time, we'll bend those stalks to fatten up the bulbs....no question! Cheers buddy.
So I put mine in a ziplock bag and it started growing another onion in its self. can I just leave it in the bag until it gets big enough to cut them and then plant it. it's just tall green steams. and it's sweet onion.

No need to cut. Just peel the excess old bulb flesh. If you're able to, you can cut the new shoots apart from each other, BUT it does require a medium level of dissecting capabilities.

Are your "one gallon pots" nursery pots? I'm looking to buy some, but they only hold 2/3 gallon soil ("1 gallon nursery pot "). Is that ok or should i look for a true 4L/1 gallon pot?

update on my regrow of onion butts. lol I had a cluster that grew below grown... about 4-5 the size of ping pong balls. used some of them... and stuck some in the refrigerator. finally finding those... with sprouts... replanted them like you would "starts". the stocks got really big and beefy... like 3/4 inch in diameter like a leek. i assumed they would bolt... and the DIDN'T. so... i got curious and repotted them to survey their progress. well... they are about the size of tennis balls now. Will let them do their thing... until the top- flop of the greens. But... I am so thrilled. basically.... my only investment was the original onion... plus soil/water and have 4 now. tbc....

Right on Marittza! Yeah, the multi-shoot ones definitely have to be separated...just like regular onions in the garden would be for spacing.

I also regrow onions this way. I have found that cutting off the old roots initially is a good idea. I get good new root growth in 2 to 3 days, and then plant them out. Some send up multiple shoots,and I have found that it is best to let them start to bulb before separating them. Even the bulbs that end up without roots will grow new ones and thrive.

Thank you, it's a very useful tip! I don't know if you know about another useful thing with regard to onions, which I discovered by accident. That is to make a potent, very nutritious liquid plant feed from the water that you used to rinse an onion with.
During a time of severe water restrictions my family and I began to collect waste water to use it for the garden. We put a small plastic tub in the sink and transferred water from that into plastic buckets. We also rinsed onions under the tap before chopping it up. In this way the little bit of moisture at the cut ends ("onion juice") ended up in the buckets, mixed with the water we used to rinse the onions. After a while we noticed that if the water in the buckets were left to stand for a while, it became more and more smelly.
Natural sciences are not my strong suit, but somewhere I read that fresh onion tends to attract microbes or bacteria from the surrounding environment. It certainly seems that something mysterious happened when we left water that had even a little bit of onion juice in it standing overnight. The water became more and more smelly and cloudy, and plants thrived on it, they were so clearly revitalized.
Since then we've been using it regularly, since we eat onions with practically every meal. At the moment we are considering utilizing it on a larger scale so that more plants could benefit.
It helps that we've never cleaned the buckets -- it creates the ideal "breeding" environment for the onion water microbes. The smellier the water becomes, the more nutritious it seems to be.
It's no use dropping actual onion pieces into the bucket -- that just creates a particularly revolting smell without noticeably affecting the water it is floating in. It's the juice (even just a tiny bit of it) that is able to turn the entire bucketful of water into potent liquid plant feed.

Hey Caitlin, I've split a few dozen over the last 2 years...you'll know they are ready when they simply split on their own. You can just pull them apart with your fingers and they are their own plants! Cheers.

Hey brother, update. I've done 5 white and 5 red. The red's sprouted in two days on two separate immersions. The white's have done little to no sprouting, but the centers were starting to grow, so I planted them after 4 days in water. Looks like they are taking. What are your thoughts about just planting them in soil before the soak? We go through a lot of onions with canning and all, so If I can cut down on the cost outlay, beautiful! But at the end of the day, it's about taking care of HIS bounty. God Bless and Happy Easter brother!!!
White ones are so weird Maverick! They've been giving me nothing but trouble over here as well! As for planting straight up...yeah, if you can get the soil to perfect moisture and temperature, people do it with great success! Right on buddy. :)

I'm doing the exact same thing growing an onion. The roots are impressive and tiny green shoots have come out. Should be ready for planting into soil very soon. I didn't know about cutting off the excess onion flesh. I would've planted it straight

Thanks for the tip of cutting the excess meat after it grows. I had some onion in the fridge that started sprouting green tops, so I just put it in dirt as is. After watching your vid, I cleaned it up, while cleaning I noticed that roots were growing between the layers of the onion.

I’m wondering, and will try this year, to cut off the old harder roots. I think the onions spend a lot of energy trying to break through those hardened cured roots. It’s a good thought. I have sort of cross cut into the hardened roots in the past and it dies give place for the new roots to break through.

@@BlessedBaubles I've debated cutting off more of the old roots and rooted end. The plants don't seem to have trouble sending out root systems so I just never bothered. Could be a cool experiment though! Cheers

We got what appears to be green bunching onions growing like perennials in our new flower bed. It's very vigorous. Neighbor has some that was in bloom last year. Now back again with that familiar tubular leave bush,lol. Onions do really well down here. Id reckon I could find a variety of bulbing onions that could reseed itself here. Only pests to it would be us being tempted to just pluck em all up!

I'll try to remember to let you know, when I do. I only have about 6, as there was a problem. The shipper got them to the post office the day after I ordered, but the post office took over a week to deliver them, and most of them molded. A week, from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Phoenix, Arizona? One major hub to the major hub the next state over? Normally 2-3 days. And, the real covid stuff didn't start here until over a week later! Sigh.

I planted my onion 4-5 days ago (before I saw this video) and I might have done it incorrectly
I planted the onion slice directly in soil and just kept the soil moist. So far I have two of those new sprouts coming out of the soil
I'm tempted to bring it up and cut the excess onion from the slice like shown . Should I? or just let it sit in the soil as is .

Hey Angela, thanks for watching! Yeah, that is strange...the roots pop out within days usually. If it goes longer than a week, then most assuredly the bulb was too old to re-root. Might have to try again. :(
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms could be high ph water to. Found out the hard way that some starts and cuttings don't take to it very well. A teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar per gallon usually does the trick. Can't hardly kill rosemary, but it killed 20 rosemary cuttings. Not one root bud.
I restarted a red onion in a similar way a little over a month or so ago.. I just kept changing the water.. Once the green shouts popped up and i could determine how many there were i peeled and gently tore off the old outer layers.. New roots will start to grow between the layers just fyi.. I seperated into 5 individual (no old onion) sprouts with roots (USED A SHARP KITCHEN KNIFE TO CUT APART) set in water until roots settleted (i would recommend turning everyday so the onion shout wont warp if your starting in a shallow dish) i have all 5 of them in my garden now.. shouts are 1 foot+ and new ones poppin up.. Will update when i have one 🤗 4-20-20

I cant get a white or yellow to do any where as well as the purple and red do. i have two yellows going but they are taking FOREVER to sprout up but the roots are growing so im not giving up just yet.. I have heard some folks say that the replanted onion wont form anywhere near the same size onion and thats if it does form one.. Most go straight to seed. Im okay with either its a lil garden project i started with my 4 year old to see what can be regrown so far weve done romaine lettuce and celery with great success! I have started a few more purples and they are already in the garden growing shouts like crazy so *fingers crossed*

Hey Rick, thanks! It all depends on what stage they are at and how the root systems are. As quick as each shoot declares it's set of roots, divide them up... Shoots need to be spaced 4-6 inches apart. Cheers!

Its a great question Paul. The earlier the better in my opinion. The issue is, we need the roots to differentiate themselves and be able to determine which roots belong to which shoots. Once we can do that, we're golden and we can divide away! Cheers Paul.
I let my shoots grow, then cut away the white, gently puul away the stems, plant them in a pot. I get anywhere between 2 to 4 onions per cutting. I do this during the winter, putting my plants in the window or using a small grow light as we get snow.
Mine have been seven days, but the roots are not much as yours, should I moved it to the soil? Or I must still wait? I can see 2 tiny shoots, should I seperated it? And I have suscribed your channel, waiting your next episode. Thank you!
Thanks Ari. Yeah, when the roots stall out like that in water, I always move them on. Honestly, the soaking in water part is just to see if they would send out viable roots. Once you see them, they can definitely be planted! Cheers!
I'm looking forward to it getting warm enough outside to transplant my onion and other veggies that I started over a week ago. It has 3 "shoots" above the soil in the pot that I have it in. 2 of the 3 are about 6 inches tall while the smaller one is about 4 inches. How many bulbs do you think i could put in a 7 gallon grow bag? And it's autumn here in Australia, is it worth planting still? In Queensland our winter only lasts like 1 month and don't usually go below 6-7 degrees at night during that cold snap.
Its all about sq area, not volume (gallons). To maximize bulb growth, onions should be at least 4 inches apart from the next nearest one and 2-3 inches away from the side of the grow bag. Cheers, have the best growing season!

How soon before 3,4&5?? Getting anxious to see results. Made a large batch of beef soup and saved 5 root sections (accidentally saved a top...duhh) After a day and half, two showing signs of rooting.

Next one should be up in around 2 weeks as we plant some out in the garden....but this is being done real-time in Canada, so it'll follow the same timeline as doing seeds. Where is part 3
Hi we transplanted ours in mid March. Approximately how long do they take until harvest. We are in zone 9b and it's getting hot. We have peaked in the dirt and they are all round tiny balls now :)
Hey Desiree, about the same length of time as seeds. 3 months. You'll know the bulbs are ready when the shoots turn yellow/brown.

Sure Rachael. I haven't found a way to reliably separate them early on. The shoots haven't defined which root systems they are attached to, so dividing them up at that point is risky. If you wait, they eventually adopt a pathway of roots and you can actually divide them by gently pulling them apart! Easy peasy!

Question; You showed how to plant a red onion with large sprouts, can you show how to plan the onion without any sprouts like you mention at 0:48? What depth? cover them? how much flesh to cut off since there are not shoots to go by?

They all get planted the same. The shoots come up fast. If you have a slice and it doesn't have the shoots, quite likely it might not work. They get planted the same depth, and just cut off as much flesh as possible to eliminate rotting.

Should I plant the rooted base, even if there are no green shoots showing yet? Also, what about the method where you (very carefully) cut most of the flesh of the onion off vertically (versus horizontally, as shown here), leaving the green shoot as a core, and then plant it? I'm currently trying both methods, but worry that the horizontally cut ones with no green cores (shoots) will run out of stored "food" before the shoot is able to grow.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thank you! Have you tried the other method, too? It isn't nearly as easy and you don't get to use as much of the original onion. But, one that I planted last Friday already has a shoot almost two inches above the soil, whereas the tip was just slightly below when I planted it. And the others that I planted, that had several inches of shoots coming out of the original onion, are all a darker green and longer as well. The base that I used your method on hasn't appeared to have done much of anything. And, I moved it from the water and planted it at the same time. I'm hoping that changes! (I have two more to transplant today.)
My transplanted cut off beet tops seem to be doing well. Time will tell if they develop any working root system. (I'm hoping for edible greens, not roots, in this case.)

Its definitely coming Prachee...yes, you need to split multiple onion bulbs if they are growing together. The same rules apply as if you were to plant the crop normally from seed or from sets.

I’ve had great luck just putting the cut off part in damp soil, barely covered with soil. In 2 days they had rooted and after a week I have green coming up.
FYI, if vegetables are from country or origin different from where you live, this could be your problem. Department of Agricultures usually will turn through machine to kill off any and all pests. This also effects the seeds/ plants.

All my thyme plants die as soon as I replant them. They start turning brown. Am I watering them too much? I put them in the sun in the day time and bring them in at night

@@elizabethmoore5069 Yup, once they get big enough. I don't like to separate them until each shoot defines its own root system..otherwise you could kill one of them. Sometimes they take longer, sometimes they do it pretty quickly. I have about 30 of them that I will be dividing, so just picking the right time to actually FILM it is the challenge.

My yellows have some decent sized stems sprouted (bout 6-8 inches) but arnt looking great since all the chilly cloudy days weve been having. One red cluster has sprouted WELL beyond the pot. Prob 14 inches. Hes growing w some seeding carrots. The other red cluster might be the greenest but the stems have BARELY grown in the last two weeks. Theyre prob 2 inches. Weird.
That is a wild range Adam! Same soil and temperature conditions I'm assuming? Crazy! All of my reds have multi sprouted...whereas only one (out of 10) of my whites has. I don't have quite the range in growth though....the ones that took and had roots are about the same. I haven't put mine outside yet though.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms hey thanks for the reply. Yep. My 1st time growing anything so I tried to keep it simple. Just grabedd a couple planters we never used (2 gallons each maybe?) And some cheap miracle grow from the store. The only diff is the long stemmed onion is w rootless carrots (regrowing for seed). I didnt think aboug it b4 but since I dont think the carrot root will regrow that onion probably has way more root real estate. Not much it has to compete with. The other 4 onions are sharing a planter w each other. That may have something to do w it. I put mine out everyday for sunlight when theres any to be had. Cant wait for the weather to warm up so I can transplant them into the raised bed I made. we r still getting into the 30s at night. Im scared thats too cold for onion. Gonna sow some spinach in an egg carton this weekend though to try and get some seedlings. I hear thats good for colder shady envionments.

@@YBahjatt Hey Yasser...you gotta do it when the shoots themselves have defined which roots they belong to. Last thing you want to do is pull them apart and have 2 with roots and then one with none! You don't even need to cut them...they just pull apart!
My onion cuttings are not growing roots after many weeks. No sign of growth. No sprouts. I live in Canada and the onions were from USA. Could they have been irradiated?
This is my 2and vid I've watched of your channel... onions caught my eye because we juuuust replanted two whole onions that had sprouted greens in the bag... we dis not root first. We simply planted the whole onion in the garden about a week ago and man have the shoots took off... but now I'm wondering also.. will they root now ?? We shall see.. lol.. Q... I'm new to gardening ISH,, so I have in my window still Thai Basil cuttings from the store... I heard if you put a little sugar in the water it helps feed them and grow roots faster.. any truth to this ??

Thanks Tammy, that's awesome! If the onions have sprouted that much greenery, rooting is almost assured. As for sugar, some people claim it can help, although there's no science behind that one as a rooting agent. If you're gonna try it, do it in very small doses. Cheers!

Hey Jhaneia, as quick as possible I move them on. As soon as they have white roots, they go into soil. Sometimes that's a couple weeks...sometimes that's a month. :-)

It's day two and my onion looks shriveled. I didn't remove the water until day 3 unfortunately. And it was on the sun, i hope that didn't hurt the plant too much so it can still grow.
You should/could talk about the need for adequate water & fertilizers throughout the year, then later, folding back the greens to make the bulbs grow instead of the greens.

Most definitely Mark! Although I subscribe to the rule of thought where we "feed the soil to feed the plants" so I don't really use additional fertilizers in my garden. But definitely when it becomes bulb time, we'll bend those stalks to fatten up the bulbs....no question! Cheers buddy.

So I put mine in a ziplock bag and it started growing another onion in its self. can I just leave it in the bag until it gets big enough to cut them and then plant it. it's just tall green steams. and it's sweet onion.
Hey Angel, I'd plant as soon as I saw roots. The water sort of accelerates the rooting process. Play it by ear, onions are pretty tough.
Mine are ready to go to the next phase! Divide and replant? Mine have sent up many flowers (bolted) that I've cut off. I'm not really sure what to do next. Help?!
Divide for sure....the bulbs won't turn into bulbs when attached and grown too closely like that. They pull apart super easy though!

Hi Ripe, I loved the vid and I hit the buttons. Could you do something for me? The pitch of your voice is jumping at the end of every word. Sometimes, it takes a bit of effort to understand.
djjoe2506 Schmitt I So agree!! Lots of great advise, but the rise at the end of each sentence makes it difficult to listen. Ripe...we will still like you, no need to over compensate with your voice. You will sound great if you end all of your sentences the way you end your “paragraphs”, by lowering your pitch. I don’t mean any insult, just noticing a way to improve your videos to the same high level as your skill and information.

How many days does it take to root . I had placed the onion in a glass but it turns black on top like fungus . Is this o.k .please guide me
No need to cut. Just peel the excess old bulb flesh.
If you're able to, you can cut the new shoots apart from each other, BUT it does require a medium level of dissecting capabilities.

It's been longer than a year since you posted this video, and I know that the onions in this video have grown and gone way before now. So from all of us, that have been following this, you kinda owe it to your viewers to finish out this 5 part series. I humbly urge you to make the next vid showing us how to separate double and triple bulbs. It is really important to us that you do, especially where some of us may have recently planted those tops a few days ago. Are your "one gallon pots" nursery pots? I'm looking to buy some, but they only hold 2/3 gallon soil ("1 gallon nursery pot "). Is that ok or should i look for a true 4L/1 gallon pot?
