    "... the story is good enough, people aren' going to be worried about what lens you use ..." hands down, thats what filmmaking is about. im tired of these millions of tubers who got nothing to tell, but comparisons about technical stuff. storys are important, technical stuff not. not so massive.

  • @filmscientist
    @filmscientist ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I am glad you addressed this, this is a huge problem in the industry. Equipment dictates the shots, instead of the filmmaker dictating the shots. The lens should not be deciding what aperture you use, you should be deciding that. The fact that you said ''I started thinking about the aperture I was using and I started thinking about the shots more, is baffling to me, but yet you are not alone.
    There is literally people who have their camera live on a gimbal and shoot entire projects on a gimbal. Movement for the sake of movement. You take that gimbal away, all of a sudden people have to think again. All that technology is making people lazy.

    • @ScottEdwards
      @ScottEdwards  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely agree with you. Technology is great but we need to remember to actually think about what we’re doing. Lighting, composition etc. I really hate using gimbals and shoot handheld as much as I can. They have their place where they are useful but can’t be used for every shot and 95% of the time your better without

    I do have it. Also, what you said about the high aperture trap is 100 percent true. I sold my Tamron 28-70 when I left Sony. Great lens! But, yes, I was doing everything at 2.8. An effect of learning on the variable aperture, for me, was learning to--get this--up the ISO in photography. That said, I mostly shoot with primes now

    It was the slow apertures of this lens that I was doubtful about before I got this kit but after nearly a week of use I've realised that the excellent image quality at high ISO's more than compensates for it. I'm not one who worries about getting super shallow DOF and as someone who often prefers and is used to wide angle lenses, this lens is pretty much perfect.

    I am thinking on making a move from Fujifilm to the Lumix S5 II and the lenses are the reason I'm taking so long. The bill starts to ramp up a bit when you want to buy a new camera and since it is actually a new system you also need a new kit of lenses. I was dismissing this kit lens and was looking into the Sigma 24-70 2.8 but it is 4X the price of that one included in the Kit. That and I was also looking into buying the X version of the S5 II.. My wallet will be burning if I actually make the move 😅 It would be a lot cheaper to stay with Fuji and just upgrade to the X--H2S, but that IBIS, Full Frame and Cinema Features are calling for me!!!

    • @kqharvey
      @kqharvey ปีที่แล้ว

      I, too am considering the S5iix and debating whether to get the kit lens. One argument against is that if I’m going to get a better zoom such as the Sigma 28-70 2.8, then why not put the $300 saved towards that. No need to have both. Thoughts? Also, not really buying the argument that variable aperture is a positive in the forcing you to be a better videographer.

      Just sold my X Pro3 to buy a S5. The IQ is incredible. The only thing I still need to get used to is the look and feel of the lenses. Lumix feels just so much cheaper, even though the optics are not.

    I had this lens, I bought it together with my beloved S5. However, I sold it and bought the 24-105mm, because I wanted more reach and duo-IBIS. Afterwards i was finding out I really miss this lens, especially for the wide end and the weight. Hopefully tomorrow my new S5iiX will arrive, together with this kit lens and this time I AM going to keep it, although it might often be on my soon to be B-Cam, the original S5.

      @@SarveshPonnusamy-p7e Very good, if you know how to get the best out of it. It's a very professional camera for a reasonable price. Depending at which level you are you might have to improve your skills to get the most out of it (I had to). But I love the camera. V-Log is also very easy to grade, and lovely colors. Color out of the box are much easier to grade than S-Log.

      How has it been? I am thinking about getting s5IIx with 20-60 or s5II with 24-105 - any tips if it is worth spending more for non x camera but with longer reach lens for videos?

    • @JoJoOnTheMove
      @JoJoOnTheMove 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@robertslapsevskis2388 Hi Robert, the S5iiX or S5ii depends mostly if you would recording on the SSD or not. I do so I would not want the S5ii. I love the Prores raw and All-i.
      About the lenses, I use the 20-60 a lot more than the 24-105. The 24-105 is too heavy for me too walk around with. Both are very sharp.
      I also have three primes now (35, 50 & 85mm) and for interviews, shorts etc i prefer to use these. For travel I use mostly the 20-60.
      My next lens will be the 18mm prime.
      However, I'm also planning to buy the 28-200 when it comes out, i presume this would be my perfect daylight travel lens, together with the 18 mm for when its getting dark or inside a museum or cathedral...
      If you want to check some of my footage with this camera, check my chann8.
      In th end, I love my camera and all lenses are very good, think very good what would work the best for you. Good luck 🤛

    Just this lens makes me thinking about switching to lumix.. as a run and gun shooter this is all I need. 20mm for vlogs and landscapes, the rest for b-roll and portraits. In combination with the s5 II great IBIS and new AF this seems perfect… I used the 18-55 F2.8-4 for Fujifilm (APSC) and liked it, but 27mm at the wide end was just too tight. Have the viltrox 13mm F1.4 now and it’s great, but I miss the variety of a zoom lens. On the go you don’t always have the time to switch lenses or set up perfect composition etc. 20-60mm sounds like a Dream for me… with f3.5 it’s okaaay bokeh while vlogging with full frame and for portraits it’s of course not perfect, but you don’t need 1.4 or 1.8 all the time. At least for what I use… I really love my little Fuji, but thinking about the advantages of the S5 II Kit.. 😅 Not sure!

      @@byFilipeCardoso I've been shooting Fuji for 4 years. Before that I had Nikon and Canon. Fuji gave me the most Joy. No matter what, i wanted a FF sensor but I hardly use the Panasonic camera. The biggest issue (for me) it's that the second hand market for used L mount lenses is very limitedl.. so I'm forced to buy every lens full price. Also, Sigma doesn't seem to care much about Panasonic. They don't even offer a 70/200 2.8. the Panasonic one is like 2.5/3k in my country. Which is absolutely ridiculous. I would stay with Fuji. If you want FF, get Sony. They have any lens imaginable.
