This is the second video of the Hi Performance 283 Tear down. This engine is a 70s build from what we can see , thanks for watching! jaysgarage306@gmail.com Music credit pixabay.com octosound
Real nice old school build, looks pretty good really be nice to see a refresh and it go back together with the same combo, be nice in a 63 Chevy 2, redoing my 67 C10, need a 4 spd and let er sing, 283 was the first engine i ever rebuilt, assembled in my parents basement, great idea until the day we had to carry it out
I had a set of double hump DZ 302 cylinder heads that they made that same spark plug modification. It was about 25 years ago back then you just didn’t buy stuff off the shelf you had to make it and you had to know what you were doing that’s for sure.
@@jaysgarage3616 my 1st Car was a 47 Chevy couple with a real good running in line 6 216 but at 15 I had seen The Orange Crate in Hot Rod and it had a blown 371 Olds. My Dad drove Olds. So I wanted that motor in my 47. Buddies tried to talk me into the Mouse, smaller lighter cheaper but at just 283 cu. In. I was not impressed. BIG MISTAKE. I earned 60 cents an hour and spend $500 building a 371 Olds. Put a race cam in but failed to change the high lift rocker arms. Drove about 2 miles and hit the gas boy did it rip Iifted the front and scooted out. But at higher RPMs bang. I mean BANG! Then silence. The piston hit the valve, broke the cam. A chunk feel into the crank area and jammed a rod. The cap was ripped off then the piston beaten to pulp by the counter weight and the rod pin end pushed halfway out the oil pan. I was devastated. All my money. 6 months converting the mounts. Getting 4 spd hydro upgraded. Welding in the old rear end. All of that time just gone. My Dad thought he would save me by forbidding I touch that car again. So much carnage by now following good advice and out stretching my real capabilities. At 15 you think you can do anything. Sadly I did not learn well enough. And built two Rats years later, both engines failed. One piston and rod on the road at 90 mph. Oh My God. Pink rods, L88 pistons and ZL1 Cam with 3 deuces from 425 HP. OK back to the mouse. 327 great motor. Pulled to 6,500. 302 Z28 great motor very similar Later a 350, TPIS, cam, Vortech Supercharger, headers, oh yeah! Later again LS1 Magnuson cracked a sleeve, iron ls1 block, ran like a Freight train. 6 speed 3.7 gear. Went 140,000 miles!!! Mahle pistons, crane stuff. Balanced. Was a beautiful setup. 3rd gear was my Highway to heaven. Yeah Small blocks just work. They work Better. Dennis old car guy, but ain't dead yet!
@jaysgarage3616 thanks Jay for the info I appreciate that I was considering a fuel injection set up I'm wondering if the intake manifold from a 305 V8 would work. Anyway if know it would work. What car or truck would fit the 283.
Old video but I'm about to start next week on tear down on a 283 be nice to have one I know someone built who knew what they were doing. Couldn't imagine shipping freight cost on a 283
On the threads coming out, I attended auto tech school in 1967 and we had some late 50s Engines Caddy, Pontiac Dodge and a few of them required helicoils thread repair from so many take aparts etc. I also wonder if the assembler over tightened the crank bolts, like an air gun on too high a setting. ?? Manual torque wrench and miss read the thing?? Can be repaired we had excellent performance form the HeliCoil kits. Good look, fun to to an old mildly built Mouse. Dennis
.y friend Al Pìtre owns a machine shop Al Pitres race engines in the late 70s early 80s he had a 283 in his vaga wagon he set a bunch of records at state capital drag way in Louisiana that carsounded like a big block it had a 5 speed in it. He sold the car and got out of racing well I passed there a few weeks back and he tracked the car down and bought it back after most 40 years he sold the engine that was in it and now he has a super nice roller thaall aĺt he only has $200 in so he has aluminum small block 427 he's putting in it he's getting back into racing at 80 years old.
That oil pump cam with that bracket that don't look like a homemade bracket I've bought oil pumps like that new out the box those pistons are good and it should be a steel crank and not cast I could be wron̈g but you might want to check it out I'd clean it up and put the short block back together a good piece of history
That engine was a steel crank. If I said cast it was a mistake , I was looking for a mid 60s to early 70s truck with a 4 speed so I could rebuild the engine and run it but no luck yet.
They use to have a white 60s Chevy full size wagon̈ named daddy rabbit I know at one time that car had a 0.60 over 283 in it and he would put that big tank on the bumper when he left of corse he was leaving over 9k rpms
I was wondering are the pistons cast or forged Aluminum. I have been thinking I would like a 283 for my 1998 GMC SONOMA and it was just a thought only it still has the 4.3 in it. But at this time in my life I'm a little older 68. I have all kinds of tools 🔧 to do the job but if I put that engine into the truck I'm a little worried about the in stall I could get it but worried about the fuel injection do you have any ideas 💡 on what I can do to make it work .
There are so many ways to approach a swap like that , Are you wanting to use a factory set up (fuel injection) stand alone system , are you ok with losing factory gauges , fuel system , cooling system etc trans , exhaust etc. I have an 82 s10 that is carbed and I like it fine but losts of decisions when doing the newer ones. These pistons are forged.
Sounds good to me. Eventually I'm going to rebuild a 305 out of a 96 k1500, I also have a 350 from 97 k1500 suburban I'd like to turn into a 383 one day. Your videos are very helpful for both the teardown and rebuild so I'll definitely be following them along whenever I'm in the position to rebuild them. Have a good day Jay.
Hey been watching u for a while Jay. I have a basket case 350 that I would love to pick ur brain it's driving me insane. I've done a few Engines in my time but never came across this . Can I contact u and ask a few questions?
Hi, the numbers you found are probably right as many company's would have essentially the same cams /specs and sell under their brand. This is a Manly cam and likely nearly the same as the Melling. Thanks for watching!!
I think you are right on about the compression 10-1.The oil pan is Milodon.I akso see a forged crankshaft.Thumbs up!
Thanks Nick and thanks for watching.
its nice seeing someone build a 283.. bought a block thats stuck so far 5 of 8 pistons free lol. hope to get a rx-7 or rx-8 to put it in later
That would be a fun project! Thanks for watching!

Domed pistons in a 283 boy does that take me back. D
I agree , I still appreciate this older stuff.

Hey... Was just gonna message and ask where part 2 was at.. !
Good to see the update...
Thanks man! Thanks for still watching!!
No problem.. looking forward to the next project
grinding on the flat of the rod shows = matched balance set ! = you weigh them and show us !
I recommend a dead blow mallet instead of a steel hammer for disposal purposes
I'm wondering if it might be some lock tite possible.
Yes , loctite could be some of the issue for sure! Thanks for watching!

Good luck on your build!! We have the 350 build videos for reference if you need,

Thanks for the reply Dennis , I appreciate your insight.
Awesome knowledge, thanks
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching!
Seems to look like a steel not cast crank. Also maybe someone blew up an early 302 and transferred some of the part less pistons.

crane cams sold one with theses numbers Z28 optional grind

Is the thread damage caused by over torqued
I don't think so , I need to look again but everything had been loctited and might be more of the issue.
Alright Jay it's been 6 months. When's your next video coming?
Soon , I have a truck that needs an engine freshen , the Brown dodge in an earlier video.
