My understanding on Getter Robo, is that all of them can be piloted 1 person when they're combined. As the "head" will be the one controlling the whole robot . So the 3 pilots are only needed for the separate jets and controlling the variations. Theoretically, if the Robo is already combined, only 1 pilot is needed.
All getters can be controlled by one pilot if you put the other getter machines in auto pilot, the bad thing about this is that (except in neo vs shin) you cant change into other combinations with auto pilot and the pilots on the other machines, each can partially controll the part of the getters body they are located, thats why when trapped inside shin dragon benkei was able to use shin getter 2 thrusters without being the main pilot, but even then the main pilot has priority when controlling the getter so the actions of the other pilots are ovewritten with the ones of the main pilot

They can't help it since the Shin getter trio wanted to save those absorbed by the Invaders (which is actually pretty much of a lost call), so they don't want to go full out "getter beam" and fry the invader into charcoal. Ryoma is like "fuck u all" and goes ham on that thing.
What I like in the first scene is everyone else was hesitating to attack the Invader. Royma comes in and just starts going to town on the thing, he knows it's too late so won't stop until it's a fine red paste under his foot.

That, and it was Shin, which drinks your Getter Beam Milkshake. It drinks it all up. And yeah, Getter Rays are bad news, potentially. But not necessarily. Like nuclear energy, which they are a super science version of. That kills dinosaurs and makes people turn into tortured mass of screaming faces Shoggoths. (And also makes said creatures EXPLODE because they over evolve. So the theory of "more Getter Ray will make it die" had some validity at that point.)

Mazinger is a tank while Getter is a engine of destruction. If we are talking about their extreme forms, Getter Emperor is bonkers but Mazinkaiser, the "god machine" is as well. They both pretty much become limited reality warping machines fueled by the pilots' willpower.
