The ones who called imperial troops enter the base where a last stand at the ion Canon. They were the first to realise that they had been infiltrated. And gave their lives at the base. But it’s thanks to them I think that a lot of rebels were able to make it out in time.
I read that the neck of an AT-AT is one of its only weak points. You can see that the blaster fire from the snow speeder hits the walker in that area once it’s immobilised. Makes me wonder why they didn’t attack the neck to begin with. Maybe they didn’t know of the weak point at the time?

3:05... Makes me thing of one of the moments I appreciated from The Force Unleashed 2. "Rebel troops have entered the base. Rebel troops have entered--[Static]"
@@shastasilverchairsg Technically, that wasn't their last mission. That was just the last mission of the 501st trooper who was writing the journal. It's heavily implied that this trooper died shortly after the Battle of Hoth. The 501st continued all the way up to the Legacy era and swore fealty to Emperor Roan Fel.
Mon Mothmas son died during this battle, he kept the Ion Canon operational when Snowtroopers tried to saborage it and was eventually captured by Vader who said he'd show mercy if he told him where the Falcon had gone, he told Vader to save his "mercy" for someone else, Vader then snaped his neck.
Along with the music, effects, acting and everything else, the reason why this battle is so great and entertaining is the narrative. The Rebels suffer a big setback - lots of casualties, loss of their base and their troops are either killed or scattered. It's such a bleak start to the blockbuster but sets the tone for the film so well. And it really shows what the Empire is like when it means business. While (in my view) Disney essentially copied many aspects of this battle for the ending of The Last Jedi, they couldn't help but spin it slightly as a victory by the end. And there was nowhere near the level of investment in the characters to the point where you felt a sense of defeat and loss.
Agreed 100% on all points made by you! Last Jedi had SUPER REY come in and save the day....gaaargh...screw you Rian Johnson, JJ Abrams and especially Kathleen Kennedy!
Somebody here made a pretty good point as to how the armour plating of an AT-AT was rated for starships, forcing the rebels to attack head on. I guess the snow speeders attacking from the front also forced the walkers to divide their fire between the rebel ground forces and aircraft?
"go for the legs, it might be our only chance of stopping them" - he never said win this fight, cause clearly they knew they could only delay the empire
0:59 Didn't they just say the armor was too strong for blasters? I know he hit a weak spot, but why did it have to be tied up for that weak spot to be visible?
@@UnknownPersononGoogle that's a good theory, not gonna lie. I also think that the reason they had to tie up the walker was to make sure they wouldn't get shot down trying to hit the weak spot
never understood why they didnt climb higher and hit the back of the necks on the walkers. Also, pretty sure a flights of A-10s wouldve massacred the empires attack.
Ballistics are horribly ineffective in Star Wars as most armor can't be penetrated except from plasma based laser weaponry (even stormtrooper armor, despite their blunder against Ewoks, although that had more to do with inconventional tactics than actual combat effectiveness) A-10s against AT-ATs and the AT-ATs would just chuckle.
I've been thinking about this since I first saw the movie... why are they approaching the AT-AT head on? There is no danger if they approach from the side or above. :p
Because it IS real- at least partly. Bear with me 5 tigers, 2 panzer 4s, 8 shermans. 2 fireflies. Couple of troop trucks and a heavy artillery piece. dramatic western-theatre ww2 battle right there. In fact, many battles in the western theatre were exactly this kind of scale. And considering star wars is based HEAVILY on ww2 (the classic example of the DS1 trench run being almost clip-for-clip the dambusters film)... it's not surprising hoth feels real
the Corrugated flexible material that covers the neck isn't as durable against plasma cannons as the rest of the cockpit and hull armour. Get a hit there, chain reaction to blow up the walker, it's very death-star-ish like that
I still don’t get why they thought attacking these things frontally was a good idea. They have huge firepower and armor, though they are still very slow in comparison to their ships. Why no one suggested to attack them from behind?
They should have been attacked from directly above. Part of the clips show a Snowspeeder destroying a walker on the ground by shooting the area above its neck. That shows its weakness.
They were needed to cover the shuttles. Airspeeders can't break atmosphere, so those T-47s were probably gonna be left behind either way. Might as well use them to buy time.
@@evanallen172 I've also read that the weather was wrecking havoc on the X-Wings flight systems, but that seems to be a mixed answer since some media depicts X-wings during the Battle of Hoth not having any issues.
Before Luke said the armor of walker is too strong for blaster and they have to use harpoon. Then after 1 walker down by the harpoon, it easily destroyed by blaster. Anyone can provide the explanatiln why is that?
My take is that the blaster fire from the snowspeeder hit the AT-AT in its weakest spot- the neck. Look closely and you’ll see that the rebel pilot scores a hit there. I also read in this comment section that the walker must’ve had a localised shield generator that was knocked out of action from the fall. Seems like the most logical explanation imo.
Eso era Star Wars, esos efectos especiales que te quedabas babeando en el cine, no lo que existe ahora y no digo que no me guste pero no es lo mismo ni de coña
The T-47 speeder was originally built as a cargo hauler of sorts for low altitude (it's a repulsorlift craft not a star fighter) where the harpoon/magnetic cable was used to latch onto containers that didn't have their own self propulsion. I think the Rebels souped them up by adding the laser cannons and instead of having energy shields, they opted for beefy armor plating that could deflect laser blasts and the power that would be used on shields was instead put into the laser cannons and the vehicles speed. Other lore said they were like a flying brick and pretty hard to keep steady with crosswinds and such. Still one of the best looking SW craft for their technical faults.
In Rogue One we see that Xwings can easily destroy ATVs and we know that the Rebelion has Xwings on Hoth. They are wasting pilotes for nothing making them fly Awings when they could protect the shields with only a few Xwings in the air.
Just to clarify, the Rebel pilots on Hoth were using T-47 Airspeeders, also known as Snowspeeders, not A-wings. These are different ships. In 'Rogue One,' the X-wings were targeting AT-ACTs, which have lighter armor compared to the heavily armored AT-ATs. X-wings are not capable of penetrating AT-AT armor with their laser cannons. Additionally, during the Battle of Hoth, X-wings were tasked with escorting Rebel transports to safety. As seen in Leia's briefing, their primary role was to protect the transports
id like to start of by saying i love the old (this) starwars. but after watching this F M L. so many holes its lioke looking at cheese. so " blasters wont work" ok cool thats why they are using the cable one goes down FUCK YEA then he shoots it and blows it up? like did the moving of the legs give it power to some sort of shielding. also if they can make a fucking ion cannon for space SURELY they could have made a smaller one for the walkers. maybe that was the turrets but that did SHIT all. THEN the cream on the top on the streaming shit. luke WITH a light saber climbs up and throws a nade into the walker. okSO why not use his light saber to to damage a leg all it needed was a leg. I can only imagine what it was like to be in the theater watching this for the first time in 1980. The Battle Of Hoth is peak Star Wars. It makes you feel as if you’re actually in the battle with the characters. Absolutely breathtaking!
Epic I was 9 years old . When they announced Imperial troops have entered the base it was just epic. Never forget it .
Ady Wan did some fantastic work retouching the first two movies and yes The Empire Strikes Back is the best movie out of all of them.
I agree with you when you say that The Empire Strikes Back is the best out of all of them.
Actual competence from imperial officers. Amazing!
Why are movies like ESB and Infinity War considered cultural icons? Because they have the guts to show that the good guys cant win all the time. If your enemy isn’t competent, the final victory isnt earned.
I have all of these 4K movies as was screened in -77 -80 -83. Fantasic. I grew up with Star Wars as a kid. Revenge of the Jedi came out the same year i was born. Seeing the end sceen in Jedi with the real acrtor and the original music in glorius 4k almost brought a tear to my eyes.
This battle was shot in Norway and as a Swede that makes me proud!👍
Special Edition is OK but THIS is real Star Wars. F Disney and all their crap "Fake Wars".
Nice! and wow you were born when Ep. III came out? Gawd I feel old..lol...but glad you appreciate what TRUE art is!
There are definitely parts of the Special Edition that are good. Not all of it is good though (cough Han shot first cough) but yes, OG and Special Edition plus Prequels are Star Wars. Anything after the Disney buyout is non-canon to me.
You mean RETURN of the Jedi. Revenge was the movie’s original title, until George Lucas changed it weeks, months maybe before it came out in theaters.
@@patrickwilson1459 I know that, I call it Revenge since that's what it was supposed to be, and the posters looked way cooler.
@@Death_By_Snu_Snu Actually Return of the Jedi was the original title. Producer Howard Kazanjian thought it was a weak title, which was when George Lucas came up with Revenge of the Jedi, but just weeks before it opened in theaters Lucas came back and said “I wanna go back to Return of the Jedi”. So Return of the Jedi was the original title at first, it was only changed to Revenge of the Jedi because the producer at first thought it was a weak title, until Lucas decided to change it BACK to Return of the Jedi.
Star Wars at its best. From Star Wars episode IV to Empire Strikes Back totally epic! Return Of The Jedi had its moments too. Now thats the Star Wars that made the grade! 👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️
Modern StarWars has never even come remotely close at this battle and the Return of the Jedi Battle. You get that feeling of stakes involved, being overwhelmed and the wow factor of seeing something never seen before.

If you were hoping to see something as cool as Star Wars back in 1980, you were not disappointed, what an absolutely incredible follow up.
Ten film jest tak epicki. Tak niesamowicie dobrze zrobiony. Tak piękny. Aż łzy lecą. Stara trylogia Star Wars to jedna z najlepszych rzeczy jakie USA dało światu. Dziękuję że mogłem to wtedy z nimi doświadczać
The Empire Strikes Back realised that you have to make the primary antagonists a legitimate threat. If your bad-guys are just jobbers that never win, then victory over them means nothing. But if you make them legitimate bad-asses that will pack your fudge if you make a mistake, then defeating them feels earned.

Legend has it the troops and the Empire in the AA are still chasing them to this day

Seeing the rebels forced to flee the imperial military was pretty scary
1:14 nobody ever mentions those 3 guys running in the background. I have always thought they are imperial stormtroopers.
I always took them to be rebels faling back from the 1st line to a 2nd (the 2nd line being the one the guy jumps into at the start of that cut)
Trench-based defences always have multiple lines, purely to give fallback points if/when the first is breached. notice the trail of tracks to their right (our left) as the camera pans across- as if a few dozen guys just ran through the snow between lines
Ahhhhh! Good ol days!! There won’t be an Empire Strikes Back anymore! First Generation 🍺🍺🍺😎🎸

I don’t get why in the original release Luke’s line “this is it” was cut out. I’m glad they put it back in the movie back in the 90s.
How is it that luke said "that armor on the walkers was too strong for blasters;"yet at 1:00 they were able to blow up the walker after it fell down?
I read that the neck of an AT-AT is one of its only weak points. You can see that the blaster fire from the snow speeder hits the walker in that area once it’s immobilised.
Makes me wonder why they didn’t attack the neck to begin with. Maybe they didn’t know of the weak point at the time?
Absolutely amazing scene!! If you look at 4:09 you can see the stick poke through the ground to tip the AT-AT over. I can't unsee it, and now neither can you!
NOOOOOOO iv now seen it too and can't unsee it!

If you wonder where all of the soul of today's star wars is, it's right here.
Also, 1:17 and 1:24 should have switched places in time. At 1:17 the soldier to the right is hit by something. At 1:24 he is back firing.

That commander did a great job for the empire!
Never understood why Luke approached from the front so many times. That was murderous AA fire.
The only difference in this scene between the 1980 version and the 2011 version is: 1:56
1980 version: Luke doesn’t say anything
2011 version: Luke says: this is it.

The 501st were definitely present during this battle, they can actually shoot
Their last mission in the Battlefront 2 (2005) campaign.
Perfect answer because he would have killed him anyway.
Vader does not like traitors.
I always have a feeling that AT is the German tank in The Battle of the Bulge.
A GREAT MOVIE.
I never understood Luke's logic attacking the AT-AT head on
Somebody here made a pretty good point as to how the armour plating of an AT-AT was rated for starships, forcing the rebels to attack head on. I guess the snow speeders attacking from the front also forced the walkers to divide their fire between the rebel ground forces and aircraft?
Go for The Legs it's our only chance to win this Fight

0:59 Didn't they just say the armor was too strong for blasters? I know he hit a weak spot, but why did it have to be tied up for that weak spot to be visible?
They hit the neck, the vital weak spot on an AT AT
There is a theory they have local shielding and when it’s tipped over the generator stops working which makes it vulnerable to the guns.
@@UnknownPersononGoogle that's a good theory, not gonna lie. I also think that the reason they had to tie up the walker was to make sure they wouldn't get shot down trying to hit the weak spot
They cut out the part where General Reikann orders two transports to leave instead of one.
Yeah sorry, had to do that in order to make the video available to watch, otherwise it would get blocked

never understood why they didnt climb higher and hit the back of the necks on the walkers.
Also, pretty sure a flights of A-10s wouldve massacred the empires attack.
Their armour would have been immune to an A-10. If it somehow had a laser though that would work.
"ah yes, that armour's too strong for plasma bolts. I know what'll get through, fast lumps of metal!" ....really?
I've been thinking about this since I first saw the movie... why are they approaching the AT-AT head on? There is no danger if they approach from the side or above. :p
I posted this under Part 1 of 2:
A nuclear fusion-powered *AT-AT* would make the ULTIMATE RV.
This looks the imperial viper probe droid on planet Hoth that han and Chewbacca shot down in Empire Strikes Back
Ion cannon fire on Walkers , snow speeders don’t approach head on , aim for unarmored guns of walkers
"And I have never felt I was anyone other than me - I have always been grounded in me, Milner Benedict III."
Sometimes less is more. What did we have 5 AT-ATs, 2 AT-STs, 8 T-47s. 2 X wings for the transports. One ION Cannon. This is why it felt real.
Because it IS real- at least partly. Bear with me
5 tigers, 2 panzer 4s, 8 shermans.
Imagine if luke just had rogue squadron attack the walkers from their unprotected rear and instead of just flying straight at them
Wedge is so fucking awesome !!!
0:58 why they can destroy when it fall? They get weaker or what?
There's a weak spot in the area between the head and the rest of the body, according to EU lore..
the Corrugated flexible material that covers the neck isn't as durable against plasma cannons as the rest of the cockpit and hull armour.
The neck is the weakest area. The armor from the rear of an AT-AT is rated for starship hulls. You're basically forced to attack them from the front.
Go job rogue squadron!!!!!!!
I’ll never understand why they didn’t use the X wings to engage the AT-AT’s. They worked so well against them in Rogue One
Before the Scout Regiment, there was Rogue Squadron.
What’s the lore for why these speeders have harpoons in the first place
All i'm thinking now is Renegade squadron....
we need to regroup
As seen in Leia's briefing, their primary role was to protect the transports
lol what are they firing at, armor is too thick
