    Bless your heart, Torie. When your dad had harnessed up the awning, that had been ripped off by the tree, you told your dad, he had done a good job. Daughters like you, are a blessing to any fathers heart. Marc! You had me crying with laughter, while Tricia was driving through all of the tool booths. Keep on rocking, my hero's.

      Yes, Tori is a good girl. We're lucky. All the kids wrote some great Christmas letters to Trish and I. Yes, those tolls were shocking! In hind sight... an Easy Pass would have been good to get, but would not have made for an interesting video :) Thanks for your comment.

    A tip I got from other RVers is to place a flexible plastic cutting sheet at the back of the freezer to collect ice. When time to defrost just remove ice covered cutting sheet and dump ice into sink. I am trying it now, but haven't collected enough ice to verify. Love your videos...love joining you on the adventure and the commentary is G R E A T!

    OMG!!!! I am DYING about the toll situation!!! LOL!!!
    "The roads are so smooth! They are so well maintained!"
    "Drive safe? How can you when you're being shaken down like this?"
    As a California Bay Area resident, for a decade I would pay TWO tolls (Carquinez and Bay Bridges) a DAY to get to and from work in SF. This toll episode SPOKE to me!! Hahahaha!!!

  • @hermes6587
    @hermes6587 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have an even better tip for you to defrost your freezer. Get yourself the largest plastic cutting board that will fit in the back of your freezer (standing up against the back of the freezer) and place it there. The frost and/or any ice will form on it rather than on the back of the freezer. When it is time, simply remove it, defrost it and put it back in. No fuss no muss & quick.

    You're not alone as far tail swing sagas. We moved up to a 35' class A from a 31' and within 5 weeks of owning it, I scrapped the driver's side rear tail end on a cement post at a gas station. It didn't look too bad but cost $5 grand to fix. Thank goodness for good insurance. I was pretty bummed and embarrassed until it got fixed. I'm a lot more aware of cornering now and in tight gas stations one of us stands outside the RV directing.

    I live in this area of NY where you visited the KOA. It’s beautiful here. Go over that Newburgh Beacon Bridge everyday for work. Love the scenic views here. Where were you “hit the tree?” Thanks for lesson on that by the way.
    Anyway, thanks again for the great channel and hope the videos and great times keep coming. Wish you the best

    Thanks for anther great episode. I really enjoyed it.
    When we got our first RV, our insurance agent told us that awnings are the number one insurance claim for RVs.
    Thirty+ years of constant tractor-trailer refresher training has made me hyper aware of Tail Swing. I have, luckily, never had a tail swing incident. Other incidents & accidents, yes, but never tail swing.
    I was heading up the East Coast to Maine in the Semi one time, and was so frustrated with all the tolls that I just exited the freeway, and drove from Virginia to Maine on US 1. Went through every little town along the coast, and it was awesome, but slow.
    Better Days

    I enjoy your post's to the east coast. years ago my wife and I traveled from south Florida to new Jersey many times, using the same route you used from New York to Baltimore. The cost we couldn't change but the delays at toll booths was greatly improved upon by subscribing to electronic toll service(I don't remember the name) and bypassing the lines via the express lanes.

I read in the comments about the EZ Pass and will have to remember that whenever we decide to head that way. At least you had a cool meetup with Totem. We always choose the road less traveled it's so much more enjoyable. I payed toll only one time and it was by accident it was not necessarily better roads however. Granted we don't drive a giant Rig. We aren't really worried about time either. I remember when I was a kid with my Family traveling up to Wisconsin Dad always had a bag of change (yep that's right change ) to pay tolls for our "Family Truckster" boy have things changed. I totally love you guys it is nice to see a normal Family enjoying life.

How can we when we are getting the shake down.." Omg! For the freezer- - I've heard to get those cheap flexible cutting mats at Dollar Tree or WM, and cut them to fit in your freezer. Then when you need to defrost, just pull them out and the frost will slide or pop off of them. I think you can scotch tape them to the sides of the freezer.

    I wish I could have warned you about all the tolls on that stretch.
    When I lived in that area, I kept hidden cash stashed just for tolls.
    Then one trip, I went too far. $12 to cross a bridge that I didn't have to. Couldn't turn around. So, paid all those tolls to come back....all for nothing. Yeah, b4 GPS.

    Thanks for the neat video. You have just reinforced my absolute refusal to travel in the east. We live in New Mexico and occasionally travel to Ohio to visit family. Every time I get east of Oklahoma City or Dallas ,depending upon which route we travel, I get the strongest urge to turn around. Travel out here is so easy compared to the east.

    After watching the suffering with the toll roads all I could think was "God Bless Texas." Here in the North Texas area we have some toll roads but there are other routes to take as options. I call the toll roads around here the 2%er' Highways. They are certainly not "freeways" and they do little to alleviate the congestion on the plebeian roads.

  • @fallcityjames1
    @fallcityjames1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I heard that if you place one of the thin flexible cutting boards against the back wall of your freezer the ice will stick to it and then you can simply remove it and break the ice off. Just FYI incase it really works.

    Set up your navigation system and schedule to avoid tolls and traffic. The eastern US is more expensive and crowded the closer you get to the coast. Going through cities between 2am and 4am will have less traffic but there will be less services open also.

    I've been told by multiple AC and appliance folks not to do this method for thawing because it can cause damage to the innerworkings of the refrigerator since they work in a gas delta. Heating a spot which should be cool can overpressure a system and cause the blowoff to pop. My AC coils used to freeze over on my AC on my home and I had a fridge which would ice up similar to yours.

With our King Air 350 that we were chatting about, we have never put a scratch on her, now with just over 6000 hours up. A new prop is worth $80.000 and you don't want to know what an engine is worth! Hope the repair was attended to without a lot of inconveniences? Cheers

      @KeepYourDaydream  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Ryan yeah. I've hauled King Air props in my truck before. I know what the engines cost as we boxed them in crates to send to Hawker Beach. Awning is slightly less and does not require 135 program :)

    I used to drive semi trucks through the east coast years ago but had the EZ pass, so I never really knew how much they cost. Those tolls are just ridiculous!! I think I would have lost my mind paying that much..

    Next time stay at Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson, NJ, less then an hour driving to Manhattan. Or train service from the Morristown area. We live in the northern NJ area, we take 78 west to the northeast extension of the PA turnpike, this puts you a little south of Phily, a lot less tolls and a nicer ride. Or.. by Trenton take 295, it runs parallel to the turnpike and no tolls.

    Hello KYD, I live in New Jersey and you need a part time job just for the tolls around here. I had a nightmare once that they put a toll booth in front of my house. The cost to get in was more then the cost to leave. This is the toll capitol of the world. Safe travels.

    Loved this video. It's even better when you synced up with the folks from S/V Totem. you might be interested in watching a video through another TH-cam channel S/V DELOS they did a four-part I believe maybe a six part interview with the totem crew. Well worth the watch.
    Safe travels. Too bad you can't use an EZ Pass for those brutal tolls (or can you with a trailer?).

    OMGOODNESS. Leaving NYC with walking, underground and train reminds me of London. Carrying our luggage and all. Whew. My sister actually got caught in the doors in the tube. I was pulling on her from behind. I thought I was going to be abandoned in London. Yikes.
    Your sailing trip was awesome. How did you arrange it? We have done the eastern states several times and griped about the tolls. We were in a 🚗 so can imagine your angst. I am so very sorry about your awning. Hope it won't be too pricey to repair. Loved seeing Maddie enjoy the grass and freedom. Take care. Hugs to all. Great video as usual.

    Toll roads are one of the biggest scams out there. Unfortunately the east coast is full of them. We have mapped out toll-free routes over the years out of principle. Many times the toll-free routes are just as fast, or marginally slower. The only time we take a toll road is when we know it will save us significant time, which is actually pretty rare.
    Besides the tolls, you get a double-whammy with paying higher gas and food prices at the toll plazas, not to mention limited selection. Sometimes prices are significantly higher, like $3 sodas in vending machines. It's like they think you're stuck in an amusement park.

      So glad you both are enjoying our vids! Love my tires. I checked the load rating to make sure they were suitable for pulling Ginger and they were. I've had the exact same tires on our suburban before. What I like about them is they are about 1" wider than a standard truck tire I can feel the extra stability. They are Cooper Zeon LTZ 305/50/20. Great tread pattern with a clean shoulder. Upcoming vid in the White Sands really shows them off :)

    Those of us that live on the east coast just get used to these tolls, but it's painful watching someone like you feel like you are getting fleeced. Only tip I can give you is to pick up an EzPass. It's accepted almost everywhere up and down the east coast. While you still pay the tool, it makes it so much easier. At least until you get the credit card bill!

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't believe I didn't think to get a EzPass?!? We could have used them starting in IL. I guess I thought they were for Locals, but it would have saved us a lot of time and frustration. Fees showing up on a statement don't seem as much! Goes into the overall budget, but sucking the cash out of my wallet was maddening! Thanks for the idea.

    A little tip for traveling the on the east coast if you get a EZPass you actually get a little bit of a discount on tolls and I think it works in Indiana as well but don't quote me on that. Also as a bonus you save a little bit of time because its all automatic.

    were embarking on a 17,000 mile RV trip to the lower 48 states. I already planned on having an envelope of cash for camp sites, and another for toll fees. Looks like at this rate my toll envelope might need to be beefed up a bit more than I calculated.

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our trip was exactly 17,000 miles too. The tolls for entire trip were probably $200 tops. All in all... not bad for spending so much time in Chicago, Maine, Boston, NJ, New York, Delaware, DC, and FL. An EZ pass would have taken the feeling of getting fleeced out of the equation and also avoided the confusion of which lane to be in based on cash/card. Congrats on your upcoming trip. You're going to have a blast!

      We have found Google maps to be very accurate. Because it's updated from feedback through the app. However, when traveling in town, it's good to zoom out to avoid having it take you through "short cuts". When traveling by RV it's better to stay on the main drags. :)

    Here is why the east coast has tolls; in the Midwest and west the states are so large that there is almost a guarantee that you will purchase fuel in the state in which you travel and therefore pay fuel taxes. In the mid-Atlantic and north eastern states, the states are so small that you could travel through a couple of states without paying for fuel or fuel taxes and contribute to the upkeep of the roads. Delaware ($12 toll for trailers) is only 20 miles with I95/I495/I295 so people breeze through without contributing to the fuel taxes, thereby tolls. Also, right after KYD passed through Delaware/Maryland the Republican Governor, Larry Hogan reduced the tolls to $4/per 2 axles so this would have been $8 for KYD. Tolls are a pain and drag on the budget but locals get discounts or bridge passes (Hatem) for one fee for a year. Cecil County MD has a toll booth on entrance and exit so they become the only county in Maryland you have to pay to get into. Most people in the NE have EZPass which gives you access to the express lanes and discounts. Don’t let tolls prevent you from visiting the northeast. The Midwest, west and south may have beautiful scenery, etc but our area has wonderful history that must be appreciated by everyone on all 4 coasts before history is removed. BTW, I am not justifying the tolls just explaining them. It is a way of life here and you learn where you can and can’t get around them without sacrificing time. Happy Trails!!
