The man was obviously a musical genius but hearing all the different versions just screams of his talent for songwriting, it doesn't matter what instrument he played.
You can really see how much of a true Beatles song it became, he still left gaps for other musicians to come in and when they went to make the single it was amazing
You are certainly not alone there sir! I'll tell you this, the one thing I know for sure from almost 25 years of writing and recording songs is: There is something about that (most often times) first demo recording that just can't be duplicated... Hearing the song as well as the artists emotion in the natural state they were intended and are in fact, being created in that moment, is just pure magic.... and yeah man... the poor sound quality ends up just feeling like you can hear that raw emotion hanging in the air, almost audibly.... THAT, my friend, is what i believe the ancients used to call "The GOOD Sh*t!"
Beatles version of Real Love was constructed from the piano demo of John's.....I prefer this simple 'organic' recording. I wish that Yoko hadn't given away any of his demos. tbh.
You know, there's nothing like working on your songs and playing them back and tweaking them to improve them. It's a real treat to hear John's creative process as we listen to these demos.

I agree - beautiful version of his song, authentic and fragile. John really captures the loneliness and helplessness of our society. No help for little boys & girls, or elders or anyone. We’re all cut off from each-other, working our lives away, playing with technology.
Nice version. Every day I discover new works from Lennon and realize of his huge talent. He is over the rest of most of the artists: he was a genius. His music motivated me to learn to play some of his songs on piano, as Imagine or Real Love. Music that elevates my soul in a sort of mystical aura.

This is a beautiful version. Much better than the processed Beatles Anthology version. I have this Acoustic Cd. It has some real gems on it. It also includes a booklet with all the chords and lyrics for the songs. I've learned to play Watching The Wheels, which is another track that's better with just Lennon and his acoustic guitar and Love, a song I never tire of playing. Lennon is my all time favourite artist. He was a genius. Innovative, Imaginative, Powerful and Beautiful.
I think the version by the Beatles is superior and a great song, but they made a huge mistake in speeding it up too much. John sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks. the original song starts in D minor, they made it start in E minor, it's insane. just a little speed up is ok, but not so much that the voice is ruined. they used to do crazy things like that with tapes, speeding them up or slowing them down, but never such a huge difference. I think a little speed up could have worked, but I prefer the original tone. Back when it came out I had a cassette player that was very old and played the tapes very slow. It was the way I had of listening to the song properly as it should have been released, playing the tape on that player made it sound normal, John sounded like John, not like Barry Gibb's falsetto. they should have released the song at its original speed, it's great as it is, it didn't need to be speeded up. maybe it was a producers thing to make it shorter like "it's 4 minutes, we need it to be 3 minutes"???. it's unfair that such a great song doesn't have an official definitive release. these days I listen to The Beatles' version slowed down to a 93% of the CD speed. I mean, take any audio editing software like Goldwave, open the song, and change the speed from 100% to 93% to make it match John's original demo and his natural voice. after listening to it like that, I can't listen to the official CD or the video anymore, it's like hearing a screeching thing that pierces the ears. when I play the song on guitar I play it starting on D minor as it should be, if I play on top of the Beatles version to do a guitar cover, I play on top of the slowed down copy. the melody is good, George's guitar is great, they arranged the verses and choruses perfectly to give it a final form, the song could have been perfect if it was released at its original speed and pitch.

Why didn't the Threetles and Jeff Lynne work off of this version for the Anthology 2 set instead of the crap-quality piano version they ended up using? This version is MUCH better.
Because the piano demo was more finished in terms of quality and more cohesive in terms of lyrical structure. This version almost seems like a precursor to that version.
This is clearly an early take on Real Love, unfinished lyrics, not as structured as the piano demo, and to be honest, the quality from this recording is the same as the piano version, but I don't see that as a bad thing, in my opinion, that's exactly what makes it hauntingly beautiful
Does anyone out there know whether he tuned his guitar a half step down or he just played the song in D flat. It works very nicely in D flat but that would be unusual.

Why didn't the Threetles and Jeff Lynne work off of this version for the Anthology 2 set instead of the crap-quality piano version they ended up using? This version is MUCH better.
The piano played the main orchestral parts so I guess they wanted that left in the version they based their overdubs on?
Because the piano demo was more finished in terms of quality and more cohesive in terms of lyrical structure. This version almost seems like a precursor to that version.
This is clearly an early take on Real Love, unfinished lyrics, not as structured as the piano demo, and to be honest, the quality from this recording is the same as the piano version, but I don't see that as a bad thing, in my opinion, that's exactly what makes it hauntingly beautiful

Absolutamente de acuerdo. Esta versión es de verdad real love. Una mezcla entre amor y melancolía. Una obra maestra, para mi la mejor canción de Lennon en solitario. La versión de los Beatles pierde todo el espíritu de Lennon. Excesivamente optimista y alegre. Además de que la voz de John resulta irreconocible al haberle aumentado la velocidad.
