I love this car actually, I think it's the peak of M cars... Comfortable and spacious enough, fast enough to give a 992 Carrera S a run for its money both on a track and on a straight line, despite being much less expensive. It's good to drive, it has good quality interiors, good infotainment, good safety features... It can also be used as an AWD so it has good traction everywhere. It's a wonderful all-rounder, nearly perfect. The design is polarizing but I don't mind it honestly. Besides, I value content more than looks. I don't care if it's automatic or manual, turbo or NA, it's a great sportcar and a most importantly a great all-rounder, possibly the best one in the market. The direct rivals are the the RS5 and the c63 AMG but none of them have the same performances of the BMW. The cars that rival the BMW in performances are in the league of the Aston Martin Vantage or the 992 Carrera S, but they cost a lot more and they're less usable for daily driving, less spacious, less versatile...

As someone who's daily driven a manual sports car I like a short first gear for traffic, it lets you roll at low speeds in gear so you don't need as much clutch work in traffic.
Not only that but perhaps more importantly, you buy a manual to shift because its enjoyable. The new mustang for example hits 50+ mph in first gear, you are not able to have any fun on public roads, because 2nd gear will pass any speed limit.
@@arthurx333 I had two 5.0s (PP) with the 3.73 gears, making it so that I had to shift two-three times before I reached 60 mph (riiiiiight at the end of 2nd). My HCI C6 Z06 and C7 Z06 hit 60-ish mph in 1st gear. I have way more fun in those cars than I ever did in my 5.0s (even though I still had plenty of fun in them), despite driving them on public roads (with the occasional canyon carving). And trust me, I still do plenty of shifting around town, so the joy of it is still there. That said, less powerful cars may be more fun with shorter gears, as they trick you into thinking you're driving a "fast car" due to the fast revs. You can still have plenty of fun with longer gears if used with the right car.
@@FrenchAmericanTravel If you have no problem breaking the speed limit every time you want to have fun then i suppose you are right. Not for everyone though. Points on your license and high insurance are not everyone cup of tea surely you can understand. Eventually your luck will run out if you do it everyday.
@@arthurx333 I can assure you that the vast majority of owners who own/drive cars like these (or more powerful) break the speed limit at least once on a daily basis. Zach's comment about the shifter is so spot on. Keeping in mind economies of scale, I have an 11 e90 335 w a UUC short shift and the very first thing I noticed was the 'thunk' at the end of the throw. Coming from 2 civics, which were about 20 model years apart (01 and then 18) - I couldn't keep my hands off the shifter. I was downshifting every little corner, in a way I don't do w the 335. BMW has lost its way from a design standpoint. For decades, BMW design represented a cohesive, beautifully restrained “form follows function” aesthetic, but that has been sacrificed in a misguided attempt to make some kind of a “statement”. Unfortunately, that statement is one of confused ugliness. It’s a pity, really.
If you stop listening to others saying it's ugly and actually go look at one for an hour or so it looks good.....too many ugly bandwagoners either way rather have this than some electric car 🤣

I notice the small additions of more cinematic shots and some clipping for gaps in the video. I think it draws a very nice line between keeping the spirit of the One Take and modernizing. Also really enjoying the Matt/Zack combo reviews. Keep up the good work guys!
At a stand still, the blacked out grille doesn't look THAT bad on a white car. I almost thought it was growin on me - untill I saw the exterior driving shots. It looks like a harelipped whale.
Strongly disagree on the looks. I like it. Looks aggressive as a sporty car should. And it’s ridiculous to compare it with a Civic Type R. The R is a $20K car with factory mods to bring it up to $35K (for the FK8 at the time of this video). It is more raw and simpler because it isn’t a luxury car first and sporty second. It is an economy car first and sporty second. No one is going to spend $35K and complain it is loud or basic. The M4 as all BMWs including the Ms are supposed to be fairly luxurious first. They’re supposed to be quieter, comfortable, and plush first and sporty second. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Type R (FL5 more than the previous gen). It’s driving dynamics should be compared to a Corolla, GR86, Miata, Golf R or GTI, Veloster, etc., not an M2/3/4 or an Audi RS3/4/5 or a Merc C class. Do you want a raw, light, nimble car? Buy a Type R. Want a luxury car? Buy a 3 series / C class, RS or S Audi, a Cadillac CT-4/5, etc.

Strictly speaking 996, I for whatever reason like the original headlight design with the orange marker versus the clear eggs of later...but of course not my favorite design language. This G series is hideous and would not reward this behavior if I could afford it.

Im placing my order for the G80 this week. Can’t wait! Yes, the front end isn’t my favorite but it’s growing on me (in the right color) and this will probably be the last affordable manual sports car with a powerful engine… get ‘em while you can!
Bet the next M3 will follow the C63 AMG with a small engine hybrid.
I ordered my g80 in IOMG can’t wait to get , yes I have to admit that the front end looked very weird to me when first introduced, but boy in the flesh looks so freaking good and you know it’s an M car from far , so front grill isn’t bad looking at all . Can’t wait to get mine 💯🤘🏻💚

"a well placed knob is perfect and should never be removed(...)" - Matt Farah 2021
And he likes to be touched…
I kind of appreciate they've been using the same exact shift knob in M cars for 20 years now. Really helps parts availability
U can really tell how big cars are getting when they barely fit in garages for homes built in the 90’s or in parking spaces made years ago.

3850 lb, yes M is bloated and over the hill. I remember when the E46 was thought to be too heavy.

Other car channels wish they looked as good as TST, and so do I 😊 Kudos for doing your best to make the BMW M4 look good - keep the manual gearbox, refresh the exterior design. BMW, ya hear me?
Love the comparisons to the Civic Type R, specifically regarding steering and road feel, and shifter feel. Highlights what an incredible job Honda has done with that car, and I look forward to the next gen one, hopefully with a rowdy "fun" exhaust mode, and customizable driving parameters. As for the Bimmers, I too would choose the M2 CS over this M3/M4 in a heartbeat, and pocket the ~$20,000 change.
I think it would look better in black. It would make the grill more subtle.
I don’t think theres anything you can do to make this thing subtle.
In black and dark grey they look pretty good
The dark blue as well.
The fact that the new M3 and M4 still have a manual transmission is a big thing that’s more important than the grille itself

Do you think Matt and Zack were obeying the posted limits in the video above? It's all about finding a right place, at the right time, and not being a moron (aka speeding through a neighborhood/traffic/known ticket hot spots, etc...) It seems like you'd be better off in a Miata/BRZ/FRS, where you can row gears all day long, yet still be incredibly slow. Short gears in high horsepower cars = spin city. It's the same argument as those that say "oh, 300hp-400hp is enough for me, as it's already too much power for the streets!"

BMW is getting more confused by the day. If I wanted a luxury boat, Id buy an M5. The whole point of the M3/4 was to have a competitive sports sedan/coupe. They may as well get rid of the rest of their line up considering the car is now the equivalent of the 5 to 8 series .
Love how at 12:36 Matt’s talking about scrolling through radio stations as he’s listening to butthole surfers 😂
Good shit TST, goooood shiiiiit.

I love the new M3 sedan, even with the new grill. I saw one at a launch and it was kitted out in Brooklyn grey and it looked very good.
I agree 💯. At first I was all bout the Frozen gray/blue, but when I got a good look at that Brooklyn Gray and how well it contrasts with the carbon rear diffuser/side skirts /front lip & roof I loved it. There are so many details on the car that get lost on dark colors (however I don't like white) so yessir, Brooklyn gray looks insane on the M3. PS I hate the m4 (mustang) like poison LOL.
