I can't believe you passed a PT Cruiser of all things on the Ring. Those are getting rarer to see stateside, let alone on a race track in Germany. That made my day.

They aren't rare stateside, they're literally everywhere and the junkyards are FULL of them if they haven't been stripped for parts and crushed already.

Great video Misha! When George put it on the lift and commented how much it looks like the F80 it's because it's basically just an evolution of that chassis (hence the change from F to G). With a good alignment and a better flowing/lighter exhaust (hello Milltek) it will be much better. The grill is still butt ugly but, like you guys said, at least it's functional. Overall, it seems way better than I was expecting. However, that's the rear drive manual. The portly AWD version is the car most will buy so I look forward to seeing a comparison once Tim or someone else lets you try it.

That was a really great review! I have worked with BMW for over thirty five years, I have noticed that ever since the E-90 days or thereabouts BMW has been dialing in more understeer into the vehicles. Just look at the sway bar setup in most models, they have a large bar up front and practically a wire coat hanger in the back ha ha. They claim it’s for safety. The newer active sway bars are becoming more popular so they should be able to control the vehicle dynamics a bit better being able to control the sway bars.Hopefully they will have a mode or an adjustment so the driver could adjust the front and rear rates. But that would open up liability I suppose. Thank you for such a great review!

Went to a lot of trouble leveling those weighing stands! If you've gone that far, should have two flat metal plates between the tires and the load cells, tare'd out, with heavy oil or light grease between the plates. This nullifies side loads and binding. It's the method used when weighing light aircraft, too.

  • @liamcollister
    @liamcollister 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I can explain the strange exhaust path. It's to equalise the downpipe lengths before the exhausts merge. This is why the G80 sounds better than the F80, and why you can now buy "equal length midpipes" to make the F80 sing like it should.

  • @westsidecamper

Lake of brake cooling ducts was a common complaint on Bimmerpost from people that tracked their F8xs a lot, so it's nice that they added that. I don't really see enough to rush to get one if you have an F8x, though. I'm gonna wait for the LCI haha.

I'd always thought that the reason BMW tends to be modest about the power of M cars is more to do with the temperature than fuel quality. I live in Yorkshire in the UK and it's not very warm most of the time so the air is a lot more dense here than it would be say in UAE or Florida. All cars love cold air but turbocharged cars particularly appreciate it.

The idea behind the different exhaust layout just after the downpipes is to get equal length exhaust for both banks (after each turbo).
The reason the S55 has the distinctive sound is the unequal length exhaust tubing after each turbo.
On the S58 they did the routing such that both sides get the same length.
There is also aftermarket equal length exhaust for the F8x which changes the sound to a more «normal» straight six:

Yeah the distance to empty was interesting, she's a thirsty girl on track, also nice to see a proper manual in a sports car, looking good Misha you've lost the winter weight gain, just at the end is that the ring tractor in front of you? Rj in Oz

Great review, I hope to see the alignment specs and dyno next. In my experience BMW goes too mild with the OEM alignment.
The strange exhaust routing is likely for equalizing pipe length between the turbos and muffler. Aftermarket solutions proved that the S55 doesn't need to sound like crap and this looks like the same concept. I'm yet to hear the G80/82 but I hope it sounds more like N54 than S55.

From what i gather from bmw technical explanations of the past cars understeer is set up for the safety of street applications and use of the vehicle , for track you need to correct that at time along with tire choose , however on this car the tires are top grade.🤔

I think it looks insane, I would prefer to have the 3 series grill but aside from that the lines on the car are stunning IRL, and it comes with anything you'd perhaps want to change exterior wise (Wide diffuser etc).

Nice vid Misha! What about body panels material other than the roof ? It would be interesting to know where the car accumulated so much more weight. I'll grant it 50Kg's for the increased dimensions but that still leaves more than 100Kg ?

It'd be interesting to know where all that weight is. Chassis, suspension, engine, everything? Sounds like you'd get the same performance as a 1200kg car with 300bhp, but now with more expensive tyres, more brake wear, higher fuel consumption, but maybe better crash survivability? That thing's heavier than a 4wd Subaru! Maybe I'm wrong but where's the upside?

The manual M3 / M4 comp pack cars are rare and special. Pre 2018 cars are very light having the carbon fiber propshaft and no exhaust filters weighing in at 1560Kg The gearbox is fitted to all the manual cars - M2 Comp and M2CS and is really sweet, smooth shifting and the rev matching feature is nice to use. In the UK less than 1% of F80 / F82 Competition cars are manual - What a shame! If you can find a low milage example buy it, a future modern classic gauranteed.

the first mod in day 1 of ownership: a proper front bumper/fascia from some quality aftermarket specialists :). the rest seems good package especially in manual form. wouldn't you consider better a Porsche 911 (even if 1-2 years older to match in price) to this due to superior driving dynamics?

i think suspension is softer more for dayli drive on G80, front camber need aligment to more negative i think -2,5 for example and also Toe....
