I play an engl powerball since 2013. We have a love hate relationship and at the moment we really enjoy each others company :D It really is a great amp I love it :)
ENGL seemed to be everywhere in the death metal world in the late 00's to early 10's. Seems like they were forgotten a little by people. They sound incredible.
Fell in love with this amp at a Guitar Center, so damn punchy and the gain is nuts. Still on my dream list of amps to acquire, thanks for putting a spotlight on it!
This is my first and only tube amp that I've got, and I really love it, in my opinion if you put some TS on an Engl you are taking off the character of the amp.
I have several Engl amps . I sold the 100W for a 25 fireball it sounds the same a bit more headroom in the 100W . Engl is hands down the best bro. 100% I’ll never use anything else. Sold all my 5150 and 6505 for my Engls and BC Rich guitars. I love this dude vids man they are great. 👍
Freaking BRUTAL. This is why I love Engl, you get such a brutal tone with little to no fiddling around. No boosts needed either, just plug in your guitar, put on the gain channel and it's a done deal. And ofcourse adjust the eq to your liking but that's it. Im dying to get the Fireball 100, I love the minimalistic controls, brutal and simple.🤘🏼Great vid btw.
I have one of this monsters. ENGL Amplifiers are the most versatile amps you can get on the market, from Clean (which is insane on this Amp) to Brutal Death Metal. They can handle nearly every Tone you want. And the built in NoiseGate is from another Planet, insane! Totally love my Powerball 1. Great Video btw \m/
I got the second Powerball II to hit Australian shores way back and man.. was it popular. Had mates borrowing it for recordings and stuff. Such a good amp. Wish I never got rid of it.. but it went to a good home. I hope my baby is still out there shredding. I should have kept the serial to track it down haha.
My only hands-on experiences with ENGLs are my buddy's Savage 60 and an older Invader when I visited guitar stores in Japan years ago. Each time I was blown away, especially that Invader. It blew the water out of an Invective and Friedman in the same store. The ENGLs seem to be like more compressed, yet more aggressive and gnarly versions of my 5150. I've always wanted to try a Powerball too.
Though many (e.g. Kristian Kohle) do not like the Powerball MK1 for being to harsh n stuff, I like it precisely for its untamed gain. One of the albums that it is on is "casting the stones" by Jag Panzer. Chris Broderick for the win!!!!! 12:30 sounds like a great Florida death metal tone. I can imagine that for the next Obituary album as guitar sound!
Recently purchased a Powerball stack sim, and I’ve found a lot of uses for it. Sounds like a screaming beast with my Telecaster, but it’s also nice and jangly when I clean it up.
Engl amps totally tear down the walls. Chris Impellitteri uses them and his metal sounds off the chain raunchy. Crunchy goodness in every chop. If I could use one in my house without scaring the neighbors and waking the dead, believe me I would. It is my favorite amp for metal. All I need now is to save up and buy one... but I will settle for modelers for now. I just have to do something about those Midnite 60s in my Fender Amp, because they don't sound as good as I'd like. Too dark. I'm getting the Sonicake Matribox today and it has an Eng 120 preset in it which you demonstrated already. That is as close as I'll get to having that sound given my budget. Besides, I mostly noodle in my music room with headphones on.
After 5 mins of playing the v1 Powerball I kicked my mesa triple recto 2ch to the curb. Engl response and clarity along with the crazy amount of gain just basically kills all other amps. Hard to beat and hard not to become addicted to.
Absolute banger of an amp mate. As much as I love my 100 watt Mesa Dual Rectifier an ENGL is on my list of metal amps to own Awesome content once again
Hi Taylor, great video! I just bought one too and hooked it up with the Ampero, using the Savage amp sim. Amazing results!! Thanks for providing such useful contents!
I don't have one but I do always like the modeling sims of Engl that I've tried in like the Spark or PodGo as well as Amplitube. I may have one of those incorrect, but where the ENGL can be found, I can be sure to use it!
1. Comment guidelines. Nice. 2. "Bible Black" by Heaven & Hell (Dio Sabbath) got me to want a Powerball hard for a minute. Awesome song. 3. Love your attitude. Keep doing what you do.
I've had my Powerball 1.2 since about 2006. It's the only amp I really have any experience with. But I've been wanting to get a Savage 120 here lately. Given that you have both amps, what's the chance of doing a comparison between them? I'd like to know how the Savage compares to the Powerball and if it's worth my spending $3000 on. Love your stuff!
I have been waiting for someone to do a video like this on the Powerball brother! I'm putting together a playthrough video of mine currently! Severely underrated amps, German POWER!!!! Great video 😁
Never been a fan of the V1. Used it in a live setting many times and just never seemed to cut really. V2 is outstanding though. You got it sounding great here.
Sounds like there are 20 heavy link chains being shaked in the mix at the higher gain settings , and the other sound of sheet metal being torn , as it produces that Chug.
First amp I ever had was the old 60w two channel version. From what I remember the gain channel was kinda compressed, but, took fuzz pedal like a champ. Sludge city. The clean with the amps "boost" was way better. Not as compressed, but very Higain.
I have this amp, and as you mentioned, the face is hard to see with the chrome reflecting in a bad way. But yes, it is a very aggressive mean amp for sure!
I don’t need any external pedals no overdrive nothing on my Engl fireball. It’s actually got so much gain. I never really go past 3 o’clock. Lol Engl just bad azzz #1 in my opinion. I love these vids. You don’t really need that savage box you can dial that in and get some nasty tones without it.
Been playing the ENGL power ball model on my MX5 a lot lately. It sounds….friggin thick Would be a cool vid to do a demo between the headrush mx5 model and the real deal Engl. 🤘🏻
I have the same engl powerball. it's brutal paired with the right cab. Jeff loomis and Keith merrow used it for a short while, but it's an insain amp. On Channel 4 my gain at 6 bass 6 mids 7 treble 8 presence on 4 and depth punch 10 mid focus 0 because I think it loses clarity on my leads I use a pod hd500x 4cm for the effects a engl z11 midi switcher.
FAQ: What is the best cab for ENGL Powerball, besides ENGL and MESSA? I have ENGL Powerball and I'm looking to buy new cab, but I'm kinda on a budget so ENGL and MESSA are a bit to expensive for me. What do you suggest?
For budget i would suggest 2*12 speakers instead of 4*12, then cab with celestion V30, there is brand like Palmer, Harley Benton wich sound very solid for both clean and chug.
I have a micing question. I have been using an ox box for about 4 years. I recently now have the ability to mic cabs again. I am having issues with too much preamp noise or from something else, but I'm not really sure. I have used two different preamps and the same results. Could it be the cables I am using?
the first powerball is just a hit or miss and very limited soundwise because it has almost no mids, same with the first 60w fireball that are designed for very dark metal like cannibal corpse. the newer powerball and fireball versions are just much superior IMO! peace 🙏🖤
The second version of the first Powerball corrected this issue. I’ve heard that it isn’t even the mids as much as it is something off about the transformers on this versions (Fireball 60 having the same potential problem). Once corrected, they’re great. Which is why the Powerball 1 v2 was serving bands both live and on records and is still in demand. Obviously, Powerball II (the one with the black plate) saw further corrections, modification to the gain and midvoicing. Also a great monstrosity of an amp.
Hey man, nice video. Brutal gear you have there. Btw the link to deviant guitars is deviantguitars.com/ . The one in the description leads to a different site. Cheers! Alex.
the old powerball is not too great at all, just scooped as 💩 imo..but the old engl savage is the most legendary ENGL metal amp of alle times, so dumb that i have sold mine a decade ago but i have the synergy powerball and savage modules and they are just amazing! paired with an engl 8100 tube poweramp just the shidd imo! cheers 🎸🎸
Engl amps just flat out rule. If I were to sum up my amp journey… Crate: “this is cool” Peavey: “this is awesome” Engl: “I’m home” 🥰 I’ve played other brands that have been great but those three are the most memorable.
Yes. Mesa Dual Rec, 5150, JCM800 are THE legendary metal amps. The Powerball? No way. I'd say that even the Engl Savage is more legendary of an Engl than the Powerball.
I have had the Powerball since 2004. Have changed the tubes once. Have never looked at another amp since.

I used to play a lot with the boosted crunch
ENGL seemed to be everywhere in the death metal world in the late 00's to early 10's. Seems like they were forgotten a little by people. They sound incredible.
Yeah even lifelong marshall guy karl sanders was playing engl then hes since gone back to marshalls tho

Zyklon introduced me to this amp....well, back in the days that they were active!!
Oh, how I do miss the days of Emperor and Zyklon!!
One of my top 3 favorite amps of all time... (That ive had the pleasure to use)... 🤘

Best amp I’ve ever owned. Recently got a Kruse mod done on it and it came to life, soooo crushing. 🤘
This amp is really brutal and sounds sick as hell, but the crunch channel boosted was very crispy great demo. ♥
I remember trying this amp once. Never walked away with such a serious case of GAS.
