Thanks so much for this video. I made my daughter a sunburst mirror and the gold paint was just not achieving the effect i wanted. Enter rub n' buff gold leaf. Gorgeous results. Just wonderful. I really appreciate it.
We used rub n buff back in the 70's to "patina" our military models! I still use it for all kinds of applications beyond models! Thanks for sharing/showing the details of this compound! It's great stuff!
I saw Rub n Buff and had to stop in. Those of us in the SteamPunk and CosPlay world have been using this stuff for years to get realistic results for metallics while only using plastic or foam. I usually apply it over a finely sanded black primer, works like magic. Just make sure to polish all of the excess compound off to bring out the real luster of this amazing product.
I have used Rub 'n Buff for years. This product is great! My recent project is an antique headboard in cream which I added accents in gold. Looks fabulous. Awesome that you brought this product to your viewers. Keep up the great work.
I USED rub n buff on my kitchen cabinets and resealed it with spray varnish... turned out great! Went from natural to gray highlighted the edges cracks darker...added handles... stunning❤
I've been trying to find a glass & metal coffee table under £100 but they're all shiny silver. So your video is a blessing! The lamp is the colour I need!! Thank you?
That's what I am wondering - a friend bought a gold painted mirror and said it's a bit too bright. You used silver to tone it down? I was wondering if she should use an antique gold. thanks for you input.
@@MmeO I think antique gold would be beautiful. It would add some depth and make it look a little more aged. I needed to add some silver to make it fit a little better with my decor. Luckily there was a band in the frame so it made sense with the frame.
Rub n buff, best stuff ever! A little goes a long way with such a small tube. Working on a vintage metal toolbox with drawers and using the silver shades as a highlighter for the drawer pulls! Glad you sampled the other shades as I wasn’t sure what the true color would be so thank you!
Fantastic video - I’ve just bought some antique gold rub and buff. And I am excited about what I can make with it. But for the old original brass hard wear, I think that would have com up a lot nicer if you had cleaned off some of the dark patina with something like Bar Keepers friend - it would have looked amazing restored back to the original brass.
I'd never heard of Rub N' Buff. I have to have this to use on a pair of dulled black cowboy boots. I also want to use it on some black picture frames to cover some scuffs and such. I also like the idea of using contrasting colors to accent pieces of furniture and applying the Rub N' Buff in highlighted areas. I'm glad I ran across your channel while looking for stuff to help me pass some idle time. I look forward to discovering the other projects I saw you doing.
At 8:00 you said "that's not a good demonstration". I disagree. I found it very helpful to see how it would adhere and/or interact with a lacquered finish which I'm assuming that brush was. Great video. Thanks!
Hello I have that same lamp it was my husband's before he passed I been dreading the thought of painting it so I really appreciate your help thanks for sharing have a awesome day
So the European Gold is sort of champagne gold and the Grecian a darker, antique-ish one. I really am convinced. I have simple, inexpensive grey-painted steel bookshelves from IKEA the frame of which I'm going to turn into something awesome with this product. I suppose when applying over metal, it would be a good idea to let it dry completely before buffing.
You're the best! I learned about this product from one of your other videos and when I went searching your video was the only one I could find with info like this. Thank you ❤
I love Rub-n-Buff. I had an interesting rock that I coated in gold to look like a gold nugget paperweight. In time, it did need to be refreshed, reapplied as the metallic flake in it does tarnish over time.
Today was the first time I ever saw any of your videos. One was on my page where you were reviewing 7 diy's then and now. After I watched, I was hooked and just watched this video. Heading over to Amazon now! Love your channel. Thanks for the awesome info.
You will love it! It's my "go to" for old hardware. You can see how I used it in this furniture makeover project I did recently: th-cam.com/video/MtIz2yX6kgo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for this video! I have never tried Rub n Buff, but your video has inspired me to give it a try. I've been looking for something to refurbish my door handles, hinges and furniture hardware. I feel confident this product is what I need. Your presentation delivery is very clear and watchable. I'm going to subscribe to your content. Thank you again!
First, a big thanks to the OP for this vid! Can anyone give me experience with how well this holds up, a particular type of clear coating needed to finish and if by not rubbing too much will it leave it as a more matte finish that can also last? Would greatly appreciate it.
You may have just saved my furniture re-do! The pieces turned out great but I have had no luck finding new or even old hardware to replace the original (1980's) hardware, which are part oak and part brass. This is a great idea!
This is an amazing product! I love to craft and I can easily see this on a piece of cardstock to make a greeting card or on a tag. Now I have to go get it. Thanks for your tutorial.
I spray painted a white shadow box frame and just could not get the gold spray paint to adhere in a smooth finish! Ordered Rub n’ Buff and put it over the badly sprayed gold frame and Voila! It is gorgeous! Dries quickly. I am currently refinishing another white shadow box frame with RnB antique gold. Not sure it’s going to adhere in a smooth finish but not done yet.
This looks like a great product. I just ordered the antique white. I am going to do two lamp bases, dresser hardware, and the outside of a mirror in my bedroom. Thank you! I love your channel😄
I replaced my cabinet hardware in my kitchen with oil rubbed bronze hardware. I went over all of my hinges with ebony rub n buff. Five years later they still look good.
I was just looking for a way to do a verdigris finish and I totally forgot about Rub'n Buff. Thank you! I think the shoes could be totally steampunk with some added accoutrements.
This is an awesome demonstration! I've been searching for something similar, had no idea rub n buff existed until your video was recommended when searching for gold paint alternatives. Thank you! (Have to admit, I was totally sidetracked when I saw those shoes cost $19.99! Is this normal pricing at Savers?! I don't think I've seen shoes priced higher than $6.99 at my local one, even name-brand! And even that is a significant increase from what prices were a year or two ago.)
The antique gold will be perfect for toning down my bright gold mirror. I was looking at gold leaf but this seems a lot easier to use. Over to Amazon now to order. Thank you. :-)
Thank you for the thorough tutorial, I just bought my first tubes and was in need of this exact video! (Now I might have to get some more colors, that patina is calling my name 😆)
You'll love it! This is amazing stuff. I have a friend reach out asking about a tarnished lamp he wanted to change the color of (no spray paint). I recommended the Rub n' Buff and the lamp turned out amazing!
which gold did you use for the first heel? I'm wanting to rub n buff a coin to make a necklace, and I used antique gold but the necklace chain is a very yellow gold and the two dont match. The first heel you did looked like the perfect match for the chain because its more yellow-y. Do you remember which one it was?
Thank you!! I’m considering using the ebony on my new dresser that had one broken handle out of 9. But the new one I found online is perfect gold(ish) brass whereas my other 8 are tarnished a beautiful black.
Thanks for showing this very informative video! I just ordered a tube of Grecian Gold to use on my builder basic brass (?) chandelier. I will change the lamp shades to something tapered and modern and hope for the best. I think I can use this product on my ladder, w/o taking down lamp, even on the chain. I want Circa Lighting, Aerin Lauder's Montreuil Chandelier, but this tube of faux is in my budget! 0 UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This product did not work on brass lamp at all. I tried it on wood, and it is beautiful, but because the brass is not porous it did not adhere, it just looked horrible. I did the exact same thing as in the video. I tested on an old brass lamp from work that matches the finish of my chandelier - just like the one in the video.
Mooch I make polymer clay jewelry and it works great I seal all my work with a finish and it holds up great I’ve got pieces 3-4yrs old that haven’t changed a bit
Thank you for this awesome demonstration! I am sold on rub and buff. I am new to your channel and it seems to me that one of your gifts is demonstrating products. Maybe you should run with that? That is if you haven't already done that. Loved that you showed us different colors on different surfaces. ❤🖒
The patina patina could be used as a verdigris to help create an aged bronze or copper effect over those colors. Drawer handles get a lot of action. You seal this stuff? Rub&Buff must tell you whether or not....
I have a quick question. When it dries, how does the finish feel to the touch? Is it sticky or hardened and smooth? If I used this on a tabletop and left objects on it, would they stick to the surface or leave marks if removed?
It doesn't feel sticky at all. But it's not setting I would use on an entire table top It's best used for accents, maybe the profiled edge of a table, perhaps?
Ha! I have the exact pair of lamps from my parents but could not throw them out. They are going to be silver and will be perfect! I also have a slew of old picture frames that I intended to paint with chalk paint. Maybe not . . . Thanks for the great ideas.
First time watching your channel as it came up in a search for Rub n Buff. It would have been helpful to see all the golds swatched since there were so many of them and it's hard to tell the difference in coloration; and, when the tubes were scanned at the end they were upside down so not possible to read the gold colors to at least compare the tube colors. Many of us would not buy the large sampler because it's expensive and we wouldn't use all the colors so a better color swatching would have been appreciated.
Rub n' buff sounds like something I need! I would like to change brushed satin nickel drawer pulls (I found them incredibly on sale but the color won't work for the piece I have) to oil rubbed bronze. Can you blend the colors? Have you ever done that? Great video!
I was wondering that same thing. I'm trying to get a frame to a super bright pale metallic gold. Like 10K with silver undertones. I have no clue what I'm going 😂
I thrifted a cute & never worn good quality pair of leather shoes for 2.00... they were light pink...not a good look. I planned to turn them a different color once I figured out what product to use! I will try this!
How does this dry down?? Does it dry down completely or is there a risk of it coming off when touched? Looks like an amazing product!! Would like to use on my switches and plug sockets and maybe door handles to save having to actually change them out from silver to gold.
Oh! Picture frames! I can unify the picture frames along my hall! Satiny metalic might not be a word, but it’s a finish! If you can wear those shoes why not decoupage them? (PatioElf has great decoupaging tutorials).
Thanks for this lesson. I have two cheap shiny brass vanity light bases I would like to blend in with the brushed gold vanity hardware they are selling these days. Then i will only need ro buy 4 matching light covers to replace the outdated bell ones! Any ideas on which color R&B to use? Faucets will be a brushed gold. It seems this muted gold is back in style.
I have grandma’s antique Costume jewelry with rhinestones and what have you different kind of a homemade you know they were crafters they made everything but I’m trying to bring that back to where I can wear it. Can I use this product for that? I actually already purchased a bottle of the Silverleaf.
the rub n buff does not smear after it’s been cured for approx a full hour. I’ve used this product for years and mostly with my jewelry pieces . If any of your silver plated charms look cheap fear not and just go over it with silver rub n buff .... I ALWAYS seal my work because it can and will wear off if it’s used for anything you will be touching and rubbing, stuff is pretty darn strong but adding clear coat sealer is highly recommend. Even after you use rub n buff and where there are detailed areas you can wax over it with a colored wax to antique it or you can simply use a paint color that’s been diluted and apply it then with a slightly damp rag wipe over the paint so it shows most of the underlying color from the main surface, so you can seal it before this step or after , The wax works like a sealer on its own and I would probably seal it before I applied any paint for antiquing though . Then you just follow up with your normal wax sealer or other sealer over your chalk paint ..I couldn’t live without this with my crafting .... you can also dry brush with it to let the base color peek thru and use it to highlight any raised surface. There is a gal on TH-cam that did a test with several different metallic finishes and rub n buff was the clear winner
I love Rub n buff - I used this on all my trunks -u should say how u can seal this product-I think u don’t need to seal it but please let us know ..thanks ..
I am wondering if you ever tried this product on a shower silver metal surround. I purchased this product after watching your video and it worked beautifully on my entertainment center. I purchased the ebony and tried it on a section inside of the shower however not happy with that outcome. Perhaps I did it incorrectly????

I love Rub n buff - I used this on all my trunks -u should say how u can seal this product-I think u don’t need to seal it but please let us know ..thanks ..
Will this scrape off the metal? I would want to use it for dresser drawer handles.
It's like a steampunk high heel shoe. I like it
I am wondering if you ever tried this product on a shower silver metal surround. I purchased this product after watching your video and it worked beautifully on my entertainment center. I purchased the ebony and tried it on a section inside of the shower however not happy with that outcome. Perhaps I did it incorrectly????
Going to get this product. Thanks for the heads up and God Bless.
Do you have to seal it with a clear coat after the application?
vinyl stool or chair seat stencil.....love your vids!
