I love this kind of video because it’s easier to recreate! It happens to me allll the time where I get an idea from TH-cam but it doesn’t turn out the same because when thrifting maybe my base material is wood vs metal or something like that. Or maybe I couldn’t find an exact color of paint. So you using multiple types of bases and products really helps! Thank you for taking the time to do these videos, you always inspire me ❤️
I had a very white French shabby chic antique shop, just a few years ago. Where I painted all the gold frames, mirrors, even brass candle holders ...everything WHITE. Can’t believe gold stuff is so popular again so soon. It use to be every 40 years things would trend cycle back around again but wow the white paint hasn’t even had time to cure before it’s time to strip it off. Makes me realize I need to pick my favorite style that makes me love my space and just go with it, instead of chasing every new trendy style that comes along. I can’t help but think it’s really all about the money. Retailers tell us what we need to make us happy and satisfied in our homes and in the process making us go broke and them (the rich) get richer.
When I do costuming, I start w/ a black base and dry brush the paint on in varying concentrations of gold. Mixing black and gold paints in several colors ranging from dark to light and dry brush each layer on, ending w/ the pure gold color as a highlight
If you want the Rub n Buff to look shiny, you rub it on or brush it on, wait a minute or two, then buff it to make it shine. It is a wax with color in it. You are very creative and fun to watch!
had a rough day today & so thankful i have your videos to watch. they give me peace and a message that something old and broken can be created to something beautiful with the right mentally and effort. thank you 💜💜
I am a bit confused. Great video! Subscribed. Your energy is and personality are amazing. The tests were great. The rub and buff . . . To make it shine you need to rub it, let it dry and run buff it well and then you will get the shiny look you were wanting. ❤
I love your diys. as a former science teacher and as an artist, I enjoy the experimenting. so fun. i set up housekeeping in the mid eighties...I can't do brass again. I also can't do country with blue-bowed-ducks. those were my loves when I began decorating.
LOVED THIS thrift flip! I like watching your content because I think everything is cute but most of the time it's more boho or modern than my style. I have a classical farmhouse vibe going in my home and I feel like this could definitely fit into my vibe! Thanks for switching it up a bit!
Hi there from South Africa. I have been following you for a year and I just love your channel and all the amazing content that you post. Thanx for welcoming us into your home every week❣
Recently got my first place and i can’t wait to try this out. I am grateful for all the decor that friends and family handed down to me, but definitely want them to match!
This came just in time! I have been looking for gold antique frames. I am usually a Scandinavian girl but ever since I saw those gold pieces I am in love with the gallery wall!
I'm going to try this! Do you think that smooth one would take some paint + baking soda and then gold over? I have a set of 3 that are super smooth that I want to make look more rustic gold?
I really felt the, "Thank-you for giving me a reason to get out of my sweatpants today" comment. 💕 Beautiful as always, MaCenna!! Loved the look of the black candleholder best as well. Thanks for a fun and super easy DIY project!! 🙏
I seriously worry for the people who dislike your videos. You’re always thinking outside the box and have inspired me! I absolutely love binging your videos. ❤️
Hi, I have painted many metal finishes and used steel wool to rough up the finish and then spray paint with metal primer. You can then paint any finish. Have fun!
This video is perfect! I've been looking for gold frames at the thrift store but haven't found anything just right...and I've been thinking about diying the gold look!
I like the one with the black coating the best. I have seen this done before and that person made it black first and then did the rub and buff/spray paint. And you can also use black or brown paint instead of the wax.
In regards to the shiny smaller candle holder, use either a matte white primer and then spray OR sand it down a bit so it can hold the color and add more texture... or do both sanding and primer. And i've learned this by spray painting shiny brass bathroom fixtures that aged the house. I primed them and spray painted them a metallic black and absolutely love them now!
*VIDEO SUGGESTION* You should diy a way to make faux rattan or "Cane webbing" as alot of us dont have a cane specialty store and caning is SO expensive!! Love your videos xo
Great results!! I prefer to use metallic gold acrylic craft paints for my base coats on frames. It's much more economical than rub n buff or spray. It's also less smelly. I can mix the shades of gold with other metallic craft paints to achieve different shades of gold so I'm not limited to the colors that the spray paint and waxes come in. I love ornate frames and mirrors and you found some great ones! Jo
I'm enjoying your videos I really enjoyed your house hunting video you posted recently especially the one with high ceilings and lots of character!!! 🤗🏡🥰
OMG this video was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this DIY. I love watching your channel every week. Everything you do is so high end and you really explain all your techniques. Thank you, thank you, thanknyou
Hi MaCenna, everything you did turned out great. I myself prefer glass over gold, have you done any glass colouring. I would love to see you do some glass DIYs on some candlesticks and/or vases. I am glad you included Kingsley at the end, you cannot have a show without the star.
I loved these!! Thank you so much for sharing. I wonder if one were to like sand paper that smoother candle holder if that would improve it at all? So that the glaze could create a tiny bit of texture/movement??
I had a brass sea shell that I know longer liked, I painted it with white chalk paint. The next day it had oxidized under the paint to make a light aqua that is so much my color. A happy mistake!
This type of look isn't my thing at all but you're so interesting to listen to and watch that I watched it anyway. I'd love to see more styling videos on boho or farmhouse or other types of styles for home decor. Especially since it's almost spring time.
This literally came at the perfect time!! I’m getting married in July and am on the hunt for ornate mirrors and frames AND brass/ candle holders for some of the decor!! Thank you 🥺
This was super helpful! I just covered the entire frame of my antique mirror in rub and buff and it looks very flat and yellow now so I’m excited to get some glaze that will give it more depth!
I saw someone doing this on parts of furniture, they put the darker colour on first and then highlighted it with a lighter gold. This could be another option to get depth.
I'm really glad you make these videos because I always have so much anxiety doing a DIY. You just show your viewers that it's okay to just try it out, and if it works, great, if not, oh well lol
Hello MaCenna, I just have a question. I am planning to design a rattan sling bags and my goal is to make it look vintage style. The material that I'm planning to use is metallic acrylic paints. Do you have any suggestions to help me on how to achieve it? FYI sorry for my grammars lol...
My fiancé and I have been spray painting GLASS candlestick holders we find at goodwill (which are typically $.50-$1.00) for our wedding because the brass candlestick holders in bundle were just too pricey for us! I am going to have to try this glaze to make them more antique looking!
Cool experiment! I have both the Gold Leaf and Antique Gold Rub 'n Buff as well and I find that I use the Gold Leaf most of the time. It surprised me because I thought the Antique Gold would be my favorite!

yay! I'm so glad it's helpful!! and I have so much fun experimenting to see what works 💕

This is honestly so helpful, I never know which “gold” paint to pick!! Great to see these different colors side by side!
If you want the Rub n Buff to look shiny, you rub it on or brush it on, wait a minute or two, then buff it to make it shine. It is a wax with color in it. You are very creative and fun to watch!

🤣🤣I can't believe that Kingsley was sitting behind you the whole time. Thanks Macenna!!I have been thinking of doing the same thing. This helps a lot.
The black candle holder was my favorite! It looks the most antique because of the black undertones showing through a bit

This came just in time! I have been looking for gold antique frames. I am usually a Scandinavian girl but ever since I saw those gold pieces I am in love with the gallery wall!

the mirror turned out so well, it really looks vintage and luxurious!!!! also during your video a marvel ad with elizabeth olsen your twin came up LOL

Any suggestions on wax/glaze color if we wanna recreate in silver or platinum?
Love the mirror 😍 So beautiful 😄 Of the candle holders the wooden one is my favourite 😀
I would love it if you could do a video on how to make trays or platters look vintage and antique ♡
Loved this. I so related when you were nervous but excited. lol! I don’t think I like antique gold either. I keep going back to gold leaf.

MaCenna, what eyeshadow do you use? I have blue eyes too, and whatever you're using just makes them POP! I always watch your videos and wonder.

Emma Kate, I just saw on FBMP someone selling a huge collection of brass candle holders she used in her wedding...
My things are silver and I love them but recently gold is nice ! I love this video and thinking about paint gold as well
Love the big mirror! It really looks great now.
I wonder if you would have had more details pop on the candle holders if you used the wax over the paint...? Loved the options!
the frames and black candlestick look really nice and from a distance look almost real considering it is just paint :D
This was super helpful! I just covered the entire frame of my antique mirror in rub and buff and it looks very flat and yellow now so I’m excited to get some glaze that will give it more depth!
Loved satin bronze one!!🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
The picture frames look great!
I saw someone doing this on parts of furniture, they put the darker colour on first and then highlighted it with a lighter gold. This could be another option to get depth.
I love doing that antiquing stuff you were doing. I’ve done wall candle holders that were plastic and made them look so expensive
Hi, They differently came out more beautiful when done gold. Cool idea! Xo 😘

I like the the black pillar candle holder's transformation. Maybe it's worth trying out with black base coat for the others.
Going to be perfect for my dark academia wood/ camper hardware.
OMG Macenna .. you did a great job on those frames. LOVE IT
Love everything you create! I love the wooden candlesticks the most. Looks like something I’d like to recreate. Keep up the great work!
Buff lightly with a soft clean cloth at the end, for a little shine/polish.
I love finding frames with the texture to repaint. These are beautiful!
Beautiful job! The mirror was my favorite!

Cool experiment! I have both the Gold Leaf and Antique Gold Rub 'n Buff as well and I find that I use the Gold Leaf most of the time. It surprised me because I thought the Antique Gold would be my favorite!
I thought it would be my fav too!!! But it’s like so orangey pink or something weird in the undertone
