I can confirm the whole "blaming yourself" thing. Once I stopped having such unrealistic expectations from myself and started simply thinking about what I can do different, how can I better support my teammates and learning that I'm no professional and that sometimes there are things outside of my control and that I should simply do my best to keep improving and learning, I started getting better pretty quickly.
Watching replays and writing up "what to do"s and what not to has helped me a lot! And really, this applies to anything you want to improve at. Don't make excuses for your shortcomings, but don't start beating yourself up over them either. After all, learning is a process and we all hit roadblocks.

Problem is it's far too easy to blame yourself and especially if you're new to the thing. It can also be part of a much bigger problem (I.e the gifted child problem). Using myself as an example here I know I'm guilty of this. I'm aware that some people take their rank or whatever seriously and have likely worked hard for it, and my Autism definitely doesn't help matters. But i have learned to recognise I'm better than what I give myself credit for and everyone had to start somewhere (and it doesn't hurt to laugh at your mistakes every now and then). I should also point out I have a self deprecating sense of humour but I digress.
This is one of the reasons why when doing salmon run I stick to my teammates I get landed with as long as possible. For all I know I could be helping them out a lot even if we failed. It is a game in the end and we all have our off days. I have had my fair share of getting mad at in a game over the years but I've equally had more than my fair share of fun and wholesome moments too!
Yesterday for example during a salmon run. My teammates celebrated a completed wave at around profreshonal! That may be nothing to other players but that doesn't matter cause we had fun! (Nothing beats like a celebratory booyabomb).
Sorry if this reads like alphabetty spaghetti :) don't get mad at yourself for making mistakes as that's how we learn. And more importantly just have fun!

    • @-bemyvalentine-
      @-bemyvalentine- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@hikaru9624 I can relate A LOT. I'm also autistic and I've struggled with this sort of stuff for my entire life, it was really hard to shake it off. Hell, I even still have issues not just beating the crap out of myself mentally on other stuff like drawing. I have a whole ass story to tell on that regard but that's not really relevant here.
Point is, whenever I start having bad thoughts I try my best to think logically and objectively. I guess you could say I have a more "square" side whose job is to stop my overly emotional and strict side from ruining everything. As I said, I'm no professional, I need to set more realistic expectations for myself. Setting the bar so ridiculously high will only keep me from enjoying activities I would otherwise adore doing.
Still, it's so great to see others are also able to move forward like this and it's incredibly inspiring. This is why sometimes I take the time to share some thoughts as well 💖

@@-bemyvalentine- I have autism too so I know the feeling, I've been autistic for my whole life and I also find myself getting mad at my teammates and the Rival team sometimes though I've had some amazing players and made some friends as well.

I love that most of these are focused on mentality over mechanics. Feel like it’s an aspect of play that’s often ignored, but having the mentality to improve does wonders for allowing that change to happen.

I have an extra tip that I don't think was Said in this video:
Make sure to check your HUD, It can help you and be the difference between life and death. If someone on your team has Tacticooler ready, Check the HUD and go to them to receive buffs. If you see that someone you're fighting has a special ready, prepare to back away and move into a more safe position. Its really useful and can help in dire situations.

Not only the HUD, but check your map, too! In turf war, it's damn near essential; but in ranked / anarchy battles, it is the best way to tell where enemies might be before you start moving towards that area... Not to mention keeping track of the objective

    • @Wailord-ju9rc

You have no idea how many times I’ve tried to take a fight with someone without realizing they have a tri-zooka ready. 9 times out of 10 that scenario ends with me getting blown to smithereens before I get within shooting range.

there's also one things that makes me better in this game: When things goes abit too chaos, sometimes it is better for you to take a step back and observe the situation for a while rather than rushing in without planning.
Hide in a good spot, observe the current situation (like where's is the enemy's sniper/splatling locating, numbers of attacking frontliners and their wpns, how many teammates are down etc), u could form a good strategy to adapt the situation, (either pushing in, retreating as teammates's jump spot or picking off certain targets or objectives). Works really well.
Sometimes it's best to have intel rather than having good reflexes.

    • @pokemonfangirl
      @pokemonfangirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree with this comment, I do that sometimes when I'm preparing a sneak attack or checking if it's clear to move into the rival teams base

    • @sonicrunn3r895
      @sonicrunn3r895 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This is also good for helping your team regroup if most of them go down. More teammates = better chance to fight back. Taking at best a trade when their whole team is pushing and yours is down isn’t gonna do much unless it's a rainmaker carrier or something that can be stalled by one person.

Tunnel vision is definitely one of my biggest problems. I can start out a match so good but quickly zone out and start hyper focusing only on what's directly in front of me instead of focusing on my situational awareness like I set out to do.

As a side note, the excuses thing is also something that can be applied anywhere, not only Splatoon, not only videogames, anywhere, you can't make up excuses because you don't want to admit your mistakes or the consecuences of them.
I like to talk about it as if it were a mixture of self-confidence and humility, you do need to be humble enough so you can admit your mistakes and try to avoid them, but you also need self-confidence to let you know that you can do things and that you are not bad.
It's very hard, but it's helpful anywhere and it prevents you from feeling bad for thinking that you're not good, and from getting tilted/mad for thinking that it's not your fault, it's the others' fault.
Also, please, do not blame your team if you lose a match, they are presumably trying their best or going through a tilt period, try focusing what you can change, and surprisingly enough, the only thing you can change for the better or for the worse, it's yourself, blaming others makes yourself generally angry or tilted and it produces a bad feeling for the others if your feedback reach them.

One additional point that somewhat ties into being afraid of change that I see way too often is *being afraid of deranking,* or in the case of Splatoon 3, *being afraid of losing points.* Your goal is to get better, and you can do that regardless of what rank you're in. If you're in a lower rank than you think you should be, you can slow down and focus more on fundamentals. If you're in a higher rank, you'll be pressured to learn better options and pick up tricks from other players. Either way, don't worry about your rank, because your current rank doesn't really mean anything in the long run, and if you approach playing with a growth mindset you *will* go up in rank. Just play the game.
This was the big hurdle for me back in Splatoon 1, playing turf war for months because I was afraid to lose S rank, but once I bit the bullet and dropped down to A- to start learning how to get better, I ended up making my way back up with weapons I enjoyed more and learned a lot more in the process. I see too many people do the same thing where they're afraid to join ranked battles (in this game anarchy series) when really you're ridding yourself of a huge resource for improvement and are probably making yourself a worse player by not doing so.

I liked that you included trying different things as a tip! I tend to get very focused on a single weapon and eventually burn myself out with it... So when I start feeling stale, I look for a new weapon to focus on and improve with! One of my friends likes to change it up and experiment frequently, everyone has their own style that works for them! Stay fresh!

I was playing my friend in splatoon , I was playing a roller and they were playing a charger. What I’d do is constantly bob up and down to confuse them and so it would be harder to hit me. (Keep in mind both of us were relatively new to splatoon at this point, although he had played some more games) I splatted him a few times by doing some good manuvers, and after a few times I splatted him he said that I was banned from going into the ink to get close to him, and so because I was out in the open and they were using a charger, I was constantly dying. At the end of the game they ended up winning because I physically could not win as I couldn’t go into my paint. After he won, in stead of being modest and saying good game, he straight up started celebrating as if he had just won the lottery. He then proceed to tell the other people that were there how he had beat me and how ‘I love the fact that you were so slow that I could just snipe you and almost guarantee a hit’ sorry I know this is irrelevant I just wanted to vent:

  • @zammich3649
    @zammich3649 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

how to not get splatted by a roller:
    1. be aware of there being a roller
    2. look for the roller, especially before dropping off a ledge or approaching enemy ink.
    3. check the map to see if there are any suspicious accumulations of enemy ink, or if enemy ink has changed in an unexpected way.
    4. if you're pretty sure a roller is there, lead with some ink or a bomb.
    5. don't be predictable. rollers often play similar to crocodiles/alligators in the wild, and as a roller player, i generally know where you're going to drop down and when becaause i have experience watching other players, and also watching you. if you drop down from the exact same spot, hop up the same wall the same way, or always approach from the same direction, i will remember it and lay a trap for you. be variable and unique in your movements and that makes my job a lot harder.

I got into Splatoon with Splatoon 3 just a month ago, your videos ever since have been a big inspiration to get better at the game.. I just managed to hit S+ and I don't even know the map names yet! And one of the major mistakes for me was taking it too seriously.. I put a lot of pressure into myself do to better and it was not fun. When you can't have fun it will be hard to get back into the "zone" and mentality of improving. But the biggest one is the "blaming yourself a lot" that's very hard to recognize..
Also the fact that you can apply this video to basically any other game (except the movement part, but any game has its core mechanic) it's really amazing.
I really needed this video and I'm sure many others needed it! Keep it up 🌟

Honestly, This really helped. I had a bad habit of blaming myself for mistakes and never really let go of old weapons I used. In splat 1 & 2 I used Dynamo and it was my hard main. In splat 2's final week I realized I liked Sniping and yet I still struggle when trying to Let go of Dynamo. Now I use it every now and then and specialize in Normal Bow, E liter, and splat charger. Currently I'm at a point where I use all weapons I like and in general I'm climbing way more by finally coming to terms with my playstyle.
TLDR: Only mained Dynamo in splat 1 and 2. Realized I didn't like it as much anymore and started maining backliners (Mainly Snipers)
    Great video btw :)

Your point about 'not being afraid of change' resonated with me. I was really into the tri-slosher... but I was starting to get burnt out on it because I was losing more with it and I wasn't using the sub or the special. Then when I tried new things, because I was new I wasn't good at them, and because I wasn't good I thought I'd be stuck with the tri-slosher forever. Eventually I did find a weapon I liked and now I'm happily using and winning with the explosher.

I don't bring up an excuse that rollers are OP, I just struggle with them, but little by little I'm learning to fight them with my brushes, but I do still get annoyed with missiles. Nice vid man and I do agree that in many instances, what holds us back to improve is out mentality and the habits we don't try to fix. 👍

As an Aerospray main whose trying to possibly break into competitive play this time around this video makes a lot of sense. Especially movement over aim. You won't believe how many people I've fought who just assume they'll win a fight by shooting at me and not really moving... until it's too late. Good video as always. I know my weapon will never be good enough to do anything huge but you continue to inspire me to do better with it anyway. Cheers!

great video! i especially identified with the part about not berating yourself for bad performance. i'll have 1 bad match in the middle of a bunch of great matches and immediately be like "oh man, i'm so bad at this game. i'm never gonna improve." but i find myself doing it less and less nowadays and i feel it's really improving my performance :)

hey thanks chara, not focusing too hard on grinding out splatoon, but your suggestions not only works just for this game, but for anything you wanna get better at. i’ve been working at getting better at smash, and i feel like this really helps me out a lot, especially the end.

I Needed that last tip. I get so heated Into the competition, I forget at the end of the day, It’s just a game. Remember folks to always have fun. Me and my friends nearly split up from the Pokémon Splatfest. It’s great to get competitive, but remember to enjoy the game as you go. We made up in the end but you wanna be better than me.
    Have a Great day everyone.

I find playing Open is helpful because the stakes aren't heightened and because of that, I can focus on learning rather than winning. I only started doing this once I got to the rank I wanted though, which was S+, which is where I left off in 2.
It's unfortunate that the glicko rating doesn't correspond with your letter though. I'm not too decisive with my weapons, I typically use maybe Splash, Dynamo or Roller but have gotten back into weapons like Shot or Dualies. It really just depends on the day, one I might be a Charger and the next I can't aim for my life and need a Roller

Here’s another tip especially if your the person to use support weapons like N Zap
Don’t always blame your teammates for loses afterall we are all learning how to get better and a lot of times if your not utilizing your support weapon or special for your teammates that could be the problem right there as support weapons tend to require some level of coordination and knowing when the right time is to help your teammates

This is just good advice in general when it comes to getting good at anything, and I like that. I’m getting into splatoon right now but I’ve been a hockey goalie for 8 something years, and this is exactly the kind of mentalities you need to have.

One thing I struggle with is the inconsistency of A rank. There’s games where I get like 20+ kills and like 5 deaths but other games I die 10 times with like 3 kills without pushing objective. There seems to like a huge skill difference in the rank and it’s been a bit confusing. That’s how my journey has been going so far. Thanks for the tips, they’ve been really helping out!

thanks for this video! im realizing that ive been stagnant in my play for quite a while since successfully improving on some fundamentals i had to actively work on to improve (mainly map awareness and being more aware of other players) in splatoon 2, i really got to place where i felt like id improved enough to now sit back and just play on autopilot. which is fine, and its easy to feel overwhelmed by the idea of trying to tackle the next hurdles, but just taking it one step at a time is realistic and its easy to lose sight of that.

The thing that made me improve more than anything else (in any game really) was realising I couldn't control what my teammates did. I used to blame my teammates when we lost.
When you stop worrying about what you're teammates are doing, and just focus on what you could have done better yourself, you'll improve quickly.

Whenever my mind goes to blaming teammates or making an excuse on why I keep losing, another side of me makes it worse by telling me everything is my fault and I’m the bad teammate. My luck and skill level is so random that I’m not sure if I’m really good or really bad. Like some days I’ll be making x rank level plays and the next day I become all reckless and look like it’s my first time playing the game and I’m not sure why-

I'm so glad someone put excuses and blaming yourself right at the start. I don't know how many times I've lost a friend wanting to play to ranked anxiety or new weapon frustration because they kept blaming themselves for all the little things, like end of the day we're here to have fun and learn new stuff! First time mew pick up a stamper it's going to be an uphill battle mostly likely ~ but it's so much more worth it in the end when you stop blaming yourself and just try to enjoy mewrself :3
Like I was terrified of ranked mode so I just focused on the new gamemodes to break myself in - now all of a sudden im sad during splatfests cause I CAN'T play ranked! XD

I've worked a lot at #1. It's easy to throw blame or to get hung up on your own shortcomings.
And you nailed the cardinal rule. I suck at blasters, my aim and my patience aren't great. I play them a little at a time to slowly build skill without getting frustrated. When I start to get po'd at them, I switch to one of my usual weapons. Yeah, it means my progression is slow, but it also means I don't burn out on the game

Tunnel vision is a problem for me, though it's only in certain situations. A good example is on hagglefish Market (zones specifically) and my team is losing. I always try to push out/through the middle of our base, never through the sides, nor do I wait for my team to regroup. I've gotten a bit better at it after getting back into comp, but it's still something I have to focus on when it comes to solo queue

I think an interesting direction to take this series next would be an honest discussion about what you (or even interview other pros) are trying to get better at. Sometimes there's this impression that once you become a pro you sit up in this white tower of "well yeah I'm getting better but I'm so much better than you you wouldn't even understand my problems" so I think it would be interesting to see what sorts of things the pros see in their own play as specific things they can improve or work on.

The being afraid of change one stuck out me especially. I’ve mained N-Zap for basically as long as I’ve been playing Splatoon, but its current kit is disappointing to say the least. Suction bomb isn’t bad, but it’s pretty bog standard and not all that fun, while Cooler is a pretty big kneecap to stealth. I still play it, and enjoy it, but I’ve used a lot of my time waiting for a new kit to try out some other weapons that I never used all that much, and have found a lot of fun in Junior, Dynamo and Heavy. If the game is getting stale to you, I highly recommend trying out a weapon that’s always eluded you. Who knows? You might just love it

probably the most important tip is to never prioritize the game over your own mental health. Your well being is not less important than getting good at the funny Squid game and if you treat it as if it is then you'll only make yourself feel worse and worse and you won't actualy improve, infact you'll probably just get worse
take care of yourselves out there space squids ✌️

Everytime I start to play with a new weapon, I generally die very quickly and when I want to blame myself I take a deep breath and think "I must change the way I'm playing cause this wasn't due to lag or something else" this really works! Also dunno where the major audience from this channel is, I wanna know if you guys have a laggy experience with the game, cause here in Brazil... Sometimes is terrible, deal to weapons like dark tetra, clash blaster and bublobber is really a PAIN!!! the game would be amazing if it was less laggy here :/
