      I actually took a Philosophy of Religion university course, and Aquinas was one of the first things we covered. Mind you, the course was not meant to be an affirmation of any sort of religious philosophy, just that it explores what the philosophies are observed to be.
      The one from Aquinas that bugged me the most (not that anything else that Aquinas said or argued did not bug me - it all did) was how supposedly God is everywhere and evil only exists where God is absent.
      Wait, so God is everywhere and yet there are places where he is not and therefore are evil? Cue me putting on my best Igor face from Young Frankenstein as I say, "Well then he's not everywhere, is he? Some all-powerful omnipresent God you blindly worship then."

      @Wolf-ln1ml ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate Voldemort and that stupid king from Game of Thrones, but I know that they're just invented asshole characters in fictional stories...
      Seriously, I've always disliked that response to the "atheists hate god" thing. _Of course_ I can hate something that I don't believe exists. What aggravates me far more about that bullshit is that they claim to know better than me what's going on in my head. It's exactly the same arrogant bullshit as "all atheists actually do know full well that there is a god" - so if I shoul ever engage with such an arrogant asshole, my response would be more along the lines of "You actually know full well that this god doesn't exist, so why are you lying about your own beliefs?" It won't make any difference, but with someone _that_ arrogant and close-minded, it would take ages or some _very_ lucky coincidence to get through their "armor of god" anyway.

    • @stylis666
      @stylis666 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easy actually. I hate lots of things that don't exist. Bad people or gods in stories that do horrible things in those stories. The thing is that my hating it is not a reason for not believing. I hate cancer. That exists and it hasn't gone away despite my deep hatred for it and it serves me well to believe that it exists. It allows me to adjust my behaviour to actually (help) change things. For one, understanding something brings comfort, so I can use that to help comfort other people as well and make them feel supported and more in charge of being able to choose how a sickness will be treated and experienced.
      I tried that with god but thought policing and condemning myself didn't help resolve the causes for my fears and angers; learning more and having a way to check if the information I have is correct did though. As it turns out, you're not your thoughts and you can just check if they're even justified or made up or anything in between or beyond and then decide whether to act on it or not and how, and again, the best thing about it is that it works better when doing it with other people.
      Cooperation works! God beliefs are intrinsically abusive.

    "I met Jesus". Knew a woman in college who was highly religious. She could not make a sentence without mentioning Jesus, God or praising them. So one day I get a phone call from her and she is all excited, just keeps rattling on. When she calmed down it went like this:
    Her: " I just met Jesus in the flesh."
    Me: " How you you know he is Jesus?"
    Her: " He came and sat across the table from me."
    Me: " But how do you know he is Jesus?"
    Her: " We talked and he had long hair."
    Me: " That does not mean he was Jesus."
    Her: " As we talked, looking each other in the eyes, his brown eyes turned to a sky blue. It is Jesus!!"
    Me: " Where are you?"
    Her: " I'm up at Saint Joseph Hospital in the psych ward."
    Me: " Why are you there?"
    Her: " I was not feeling very well so I checked myself in."
    So there you have it. If you are looking for Jesus, you will find him in the psych ward at Saint Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

His claim about his awareness being peaceful made me think he needed to be shoved out of a high window just to demonstrate what the rush of adrenaline would do to his peace of mind, but that would be an unnecessarily extreme method of making a point. Anyway, he was clearly trying to avoid using the words 'soul' or 'consciousness' because he knows the first would get him laughed at after he made so much of science being the right way to investigate things and the second would completely undermine his argument.

      Indeed. It may suck if it happens to be that more bad happens than good, but ascribing it to any religious belief is not an actual answer as to why, let alone a guide to any sort of solution to the real and/or perceived problem(s).
      Perhaps the most reliable answer to why is, to me at least (and pardon me if I sound crass), "Sh^t happens, sh^t will likely and perhaps undoubtedly continue to happen, and you can either accept the sh^t as good or at least contribute in any number of ways to try to reduce the sh^t. Take your pick, but only one of these choices actually strives to get rid of the sh^t."
      Religion might, MIGHT serve as an okay (at best) introduction to morality, but it is hardly the best case for it. I can grant that the more atheistic religions do not fall into _all_ of the same pitfalls as the thestic ones do, but they still ultimately fall into enough of them. It is like the difference between a POS and a particularly fetid POS: one might be comparatively more pleasant to smell than the other, but both still stink and need to be disposed of.

The same way I dealt with the third worst thing (prostate cancer). I am not special. Everybody on this planet dies. Everything dies. I will die. One should live whilst one can. There is beauty, laughter, joy, and love for my children and grand children, among many, many other things (your list may vary). Did I meditate or pray to a god? Of course not. Who would need that? The only speck of pride I retain is that I have no need of a sky father or earth mother to coddle me. I accept life as it is, and that is, to me, the most reliable way to approach life. I don't need his god, nor that god's promises, admonitions, dictates, nor his heaven. No thanks.

    The most telling thing about the three most common reasons, is a reason that is conspicuously missing. "I became a Christian because a Christian apologist said I should." Good reason for that. It doesn't happen. So why, if being raised a Christian or having some experience that compelled you to be a Christian, would you expect others to become a Christian simply because some apologist says you should? 🤔

    • @memyselfandi4173
      @memyselfandi4173 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, they don't, really. The point of apologetics is not to convince non-believers to believe. It has two purposes. 1) It gives the believers things to say to non-believers so they don't stand there with their mouth open going "Duuuuuuh, I don't know" when asked about their faith and why they have it. The problem is that the apologetic arguments are, to a one, easily refuted if the non-believer has functional reasoning capabilities. Not all non-believers do, but mostly, it ends up that the believers look bad when they parrot the lines they're told to say. But more importantly, 2) It gives the believer something they can say to themselves when they find themselves doubting, so they don't leave the faith and therefore derail the gravy train for the church.
      Fact of the matter is that Christianity is hemorrhaging. It may be increasing in some areas (like Africa, I believe), but overall it is in decline. I believe all religions are other than Islam and even the growth of that has slowed. (Don't quote me on all of this. I haven't looked up the stats, but I think I remember reading this recently.) So, apologists are working overtime, trying to function as tourniquets, but they're not succeeding very well.

    Even as an agnostic, I’m not even mad at the fellow British guy, if all the other theists this video gave arguments as friendly, as respectable, and as chill then I would be a little bit more of a theist. I say it loud and proud as an agnostic humanist. I RESPECT THIS MAN!
    The reason we have not reached secular-based world peace by now is because, unlike this guy, theists in the US (and most other British theists) focus on forcing their beliefs, bullying people who believe different, and being jerks.
    If I do ever start to believe in God, my role model will be this man 🤗

    That last one might actually be the dumbest thing I've ever heard, and I've suffered through the Matt Powell highlight reel....
    Atheist are atheists because they're incapable of being self-aware or introspective? Quite the opposite. My introspection is why I'm incapable of lying to myself in exchange for the warm-fuzzies of believing there's an invisible sky-daddy that thinks I'm special. And he still didn't even lonk it yo a gawd? Then wtf was even the point?!

    I love it when Theists think that "look how perfect nature is" is a good argument. I HATE nature, so did god make me imperfect and thus isn't perfect, or is the nature thing a bad argument to begin with? If the answer is I'm imperfect and therefor so is god, then they need to redefine this god character.
