Why It's Not a Good Idea to Clean the Computer With Vacuum Cleaner

  • See why it is not a good idea to use a vacuum cleaner to clean your dusty computer.
    Vacuum cleaner can quickly build up static electricity, and when you put the vacuum head near the electronic component the build up of electricity can just fry small components on the motherboard.

    I usually use a can of compressed air with the PC standing on its side & then use a slightly damp cloth to collect the dust from the bottom of the case. I have also used a vacuum but used a cardboard tube as the nozzle - thinking that the static would be less than with a metal or plastic tube.

    I worried about this once. I bought an anti-static wrist strap and clip it to the water pipe nearby (basement workshop). Never had a problem vacuuming any computer component. I've vacuumed off heatsink fans that had more cat hair than a cat.

      So have I, with no problems. I've vacuumed T.V.s, Radios, all sorts of devices, and never had a problem. I've always thought the compressed air companies had to sell us the idea - not to use vacuum - just so they can sell canned compressed air... After all, what's the diff between "Blowing," and "Sucking" air??? Logically, It's pretty commutative. However, I would - out of caution - use a wrist strap....

    • @blueckaym
      @blueckaym ปีที่แล้ว

      @@newinformation1942 , As far as I understand it's not so much the movement of air (tough some claim that the friction of dust in the air itself can create static charge), but it's the vacuum motor and the high speed of the air pumped in tight spaces with dust and plastics nearby.
      This was compressed air (if compressed in advance!) doesn't have.
      But making your vacuum static-charge free seems trivial to me too.
      And I wonder why not all vacuums have it integrated and connected to the ground in your wall socket (at least the models with cable that is)

    I dont understand people who blow air, blowing air is the worst thing you can do to your hardware because the dust is going to build up in holes and edges and it would short-circuit the electronics.
    If youre afraid of the static electricity that much then ground up your pc case and use an anti static armband or if you dont have one then hold a metal or do it barefoot, been vacuuming computers for over 15 years, ive never seen or heard someone who damaged their hardware because of vacuum cleaning.

      Since 2001, I"ve always used vacuum cleaner in a combination of a small, clean pencil brush. Nothing happened what so ever.
      I"m doing it it to my Asus laptop at every 3 months. Runs like a charm. And no, it's impossible to vacuum electronic parts out of your motherboard. Only if you hit it and punching to do so.
      I never understood this annoying practice of blowing air. Such a hazardous action for your nose, tracheea, lungs and to small spaces on motherboards and electronics.

      Guys there's a reason computer stores sell compressed air and not vacuum cleaners. Don't listen to all of the anecdotal evidence given by youtube commenters here. Every time you vacuum your PC you're relying on RNG not to break it. The parts inside are VERY easily damaged by a static shock and vacuum cleaners DO produce a lot of static charge. Do a google search and you'll find people who have broken their PC's this way as well as all of the *professional PC related organisations* who warn against doing it.

    Hi, please help me ... what if I have already vacuumed my laptop with a vacuum cleaner ?
    I had no idea vaccuming laptop is a no-no, I thought I could remove the internal dust so I tried it. Within about a day I started having various problems when I was using my laptop ... at first my screen would behave strangely like sudden quick flashes of distortion, flashes of black screen .. and then subsequently when I wanted to switch on it would
    suddenly completely off by itself after a couple of seconds of me pressing on button.
    Now I suspect these problems maybe due to my act of vacuuming the vents (I did it repeatedly for a few minutes as I wanted to suck up all the internal dust) ...
    Now how do I remove the static buildup and return the internal parts to the way it was ?

    Lots of comments in here by well-meaning people who don't really know the risks. Please do a google search on "computer vacuum static" and read articles from reputable PC sources. Just grounding yourself or your computer will not help! The static builds at the entrance of the vacuum attachment, and if it's made of plastic it won't be able to discharge except by damaging components.
    So... I'm wondering if you could use a METAL vacuum attachment that you hold in your hand, and make sure that you're grounded both to the PC's case and to an external ground. Seems like that would be the safest way to do it, unless you want to spend $200+ on an ESD-safe vacuum cleaner. You could probably just buy a metal tube from Lowes that fits your vacuum, and press the end of the tube together to form a narrow opening that would work for your attachment. Only a few dollars. Oh I get it now how silly of me !Pushing compressed air doesn't create static electricity - only pulling air with a vacuum does ! I should have known that particles only produce a charge if they're rubbed in a certain direction !My two cents are blowing compressed air can a) potentially introduce water particles into sensitive areas of the pc b) cause dust etc to jam in areas it shouldn't - fan bearings / heat sinks etc
    c) compressed air won't budge all the grime - a mini brush will get into crevices and dislodge 99% of the gunkUse a mini vaccum kit - not what this guy is using. But be careful - using a vacuum to clean a pc for more tha 90 secs will increase your risk of lightning strike !LMFAO !

    • @juliettami77
      @juliettami77 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the direction, it's the force. Compressed air pushes the particles with less force in a smaller area, creating less static. Vacuums are powerful by comparison.

      Jesus Christ dude... With compressed air, the particles are traveling in a wide dispersal with out any object for the static electricity to continuously build on. With a vacuum, particles of dirt are continuously rubbing against each other as the enter the vacuum head and static electricity starts to build up on the plastic head attachment of the vacuum.
