Thanks Jason for taking time to review the more available, value bourbons. I appreciate it when the whiskey tubers review stuff we can actually find. Cheers!
It does, but I hope it stays underrated. I am an old school WT101 fan. Been drinking it for years. I don’t want to have to chase it. I feel bad for old school Buffalo Trace/Blanton’s fans who can’t get there favorite whiskey anymore.
Even before the pandemic and quarantines and distancing, I did all my drinking alone. I feel like you’re doing me dirty with your parting comment at the end of each vid. Oh well. I like drinking with myself. We share the same views and hardly ever argue. Great vid. Thanks for putting some new (to me) bourbons on my radar.
@@WhiskeyWars It’s funny looking back at these old posts. I don’t drink early Times much anymore. Good bottle, But I don’t drink a lot, so I’m rarely reaching for the budget pours
I think 101 is the best value bourbon ever created.. for 18-25 it hits all the marks. Granted you could throw rare breed in there as well with the proof point. But 101 is great for casual to experienced drinkers and speaks for itself.
Old Forester Signature 100 Proof is totally a standby for me; pretty much anytime I hit the liquor store I replenish my supply. Wild Turkey 101 is also a long-time regular drink (since college), although I've gotten away from it recently as I've branched out to try some other Bourbons. I'd still like to give the Ezra Brooks 99 a try, but while I like peanuts and peanut butter, it isn't really one of my favorite bourbon flavor notes, so Old Tub sounds like I can give it pass without too much remorse. Thanks for a great video!
The glory of doing matchups like this is the price. I’ve set up flights for friends with all 100ish budgets, and all can enjoy - without putting down too much cash. No reason not to try all.
WT-101 used to be a staple for me when I lived in Taos. I'd go to Walgreen's and buy a 4-pack of U.S. Becks and to a hole-in-the-wall liquor store about 200 feet away and get a quarter-pint of WT-101. They always had some in the cool box. And those were my evening. Hey... it gets COLD at night from October through May! But now my stomach and gullet can't handle straight high-proof bourbon... and I won't dilute my bourbon. So mostly I just pick up a couple of miniatures when I want whiskey. I don't touch strong liquor much. Great blind tasting, though!
I got all four from your description. On the old Ezra you described chocolate and dove bar. I tried to find it but for me I get more fresh cut grass and or hay. And a pepper spice at the back that doesn’t last long. Interesting blind. Thanks
Great line-up, and I'm right with you on all four. I had all four on my bar but gave the Old Tub to my neighbor because it's just too much peanut for me.
Boom! Fun lineup here, and no surprises on the winner. I did snag a bottle of that Old Tub a while back but haven't opened it yet, ha ha. Will have to crack it sometime to see if I'm down w/ Mr. Peanut roughing me up.
Nice blind Jason. I could pretty much guess them all based on your tasting notes. I haven't had Ezra 99 but I've never got chocolate on the others so process of elimination. So many good ones in that 99 to 101 proof range now. You could set up a tourney. :) Cheers buddy.
I havent done much Turkey 101 but Turkey Rare Breed is a top contender for me....considering how much folks dig 101, i gotta check it out. You cant beat its price or availability!
One note I love from Wild Turkey and RR is that cornbread, corn pudding almost savory smell. I don’t get it all the time and it’s usually early on in a bottle after opening, but it just adds to the complexity
Love that you did a blind between all these. I was definitely thinking that Ezra would place higher but it sounds like it just fell short. Great stuff buddy! Cheers
Since Beam made Old Tub available at retail, Bourbon Nation has attempted to legitimize it. In side-by-side, or in blind comparisons, Old Tub consistently finishes last. It's a hard pass for me, and I'm a Jim Beam fan.
Dang that WT 101. I poured one again last night. It was absolutely fabulous. It makes it hard to buy other whiskeys when you know that you can get WT 101 around 20 bucks.
As an aside, considering the difference in price point, my guess is that here in Kansas the tax is about $10 a bottle higher. Once again, kick ass review Jason! I keep coming back to WT 101 too, except now I'm buying it in the 1.75 L. I do most of my drinking alone too, but wIth fond thoughts and memories. 😊
Great Video, All of these bottles are widely available, and not unicorn tears in a bottle of over hyped over priced marketed spirits that give the whole bourbon trade a bad name.. secendary markets should be outlawed.. it actually is illegal to re-sell liquour without a license..
I still have a bottle of Old Ezra 101 7year from 5-10 years ago. Now that was a budget bourbon at $16/5th! It will be interesting to compare to the 99. If you can find a bottle, you should try it as a comparison of the pre and post bourbon boom budget sippers.
I saw they were discontinuing it years ago so I purchased a full case of 12. It is still gathering dust in my basement waiting for my retirement years to enjoy! That was good stuff!
Just picked up a bottle of WT 101 per your previous test/recommendations. Excellent for $21.99. Thanks!! 😊. PS I am a Blanton’s lover but this will do when I can’t get Blantons.
WT 101 always, 8th and Sand an MPG product for around 23 another new one I'm taking a liking to. Would love to find that Early Times Bottled in Bond but it's like trying to syphon gold out of a toilet bowl.
Back in Black! Dang those are some stealth glens...I would feel so weird drinking whiskey out of something where I can't see the beautiful color. Ironically these all have very distinct notes making them easier to pick out. Sipping on Old Tub for me isn't ideal, but it's been solid for an old fashioned. I hope when I go back to the Ezra99 I enjoy it way more than what I got with the neck pour.
Great video! I definitely could tell what was what as you were going along, and I had a suspicion about which would win for you before you started! I’m definitely interested to try the Ezra out once I see it.
Yep, those are all the typical flavors in those products. To me I just do not like banana + cherry together, and if it's alcohol forward a bit it turns Luden's medicinal. I usually choose OF last. I don't want as much peanut as Old Tub but OGD BiB or OGD 114 would probably win out over Ezra. Most times I pick out the OGD over WT, but I tend to just go back and forth between the two. A bunch of times the WT funk is there and I pick it second.

I think Elijah Craig small batch is a GREAT pick for someone new to bourbon...especially if you are trying to avoid the 'burn' of alot of the higher proof stuff that folks dig. Craig is a fav.
