      Dear Varusteleka,
Your knives are great. Especially that the Skrama 240 is a dream.
      But allow me two questions:
      1. Is it possible that this model 140 tested here, broke faster than the others?
      2. Would it be possible to produce the 110 and 140 models with more pronounced hand protection for beginners?
I wish you lots of success and all the best.

@@katerkater7692 1. everything is, of course, possible, but the knife took quite a beating, so it's not a big surprise that it broke at some point. 2. Sorry, but no. This would also require redesigning the sheaths, so it would be a huge project. The grip on the handle is quite good, so slipping shouldn't really be an issue.

Teräväs blades are actually Laurin Metalli production blades as far as I know from Finland and made in Kauhava Finland. They have very high standards and they make very good blades from 80crv2 toolsteel. The hrc is about 59 in rockwell scale. Usually.
They have performed very well in the past generally. I havent had any issues with them and I have a lot of Lauris blades.. They are not crowbars and not axes however. The spine is usually around 3mm and they are scandis. The tip is not designed to endure extreme bending but still has a very good durability anyways. 80crv2 endures shocks verywell but a 3mm thick spine is too thin to hit rocks. A 7mm thick spined 80crv2 spine however is robust enough for extreme use. I think 59hrc hardness is too hard for general use. 54-55hrc would be better for general abusing use for 80crv2.
The high 59 hardness is the reason why the blade broke in this test.
15n20 would be more suitable for general abuse. 80crv2 wont break in batoning or wood chopping how ever. You can also hit car metals with it. As a general knife with normal slight abusive use lauris 80crv2 blades will not break.
I havent managed to break any of Lauris blades even thou I have used them hard. Cutting bones, opening cans, forcing open canister lits, using the tip as a screwdriver with out problems, chopping wood and batoning. Even knife throwing hasnt been a problem.
So its a very functional steel this 80crv2 in real life use. You can sharpen it beyond shaving sharp.
80crv2 is a traditional puukko-knife steel in Finland and time tested in all extreme weather conditions.
I would bet my life on a 80crv2 steel blade. Marttiinis chromium steel Leukus are also very reliable if used the way I described above.
The thicker the spine the tougher use the knife usually endures.
How ever the knives are supposed to be cutting tools so if the spine is too thick and the blade is not wide enough, its not a very good knife anymore.
Kukris and machetes are for chopping and theyre made for hard wood work. They are more robust than knives.
Well built knives are hard to find these days and youre a good job testing how all these market knives actually hold together.
Handmade knives are the finest of all knives out there and theyre very pricy also.
Usually people dont think about how the knives and puukkos etc. Should be used until they cost enough money.
13000 to 100 000€ price tagged sharp bladed cutting tools have a tendency to last thousands of years.
People usually have a higher respect for bladesmith artesans handmade knives-Puukkos and folding knives that are individually made for the user than some factory produced knives that are produced too much to be appreciated at all.

@@General_ONeill I wanted to say that the Skrama is better. Slightly softer but obviously the differential hardening is bullshit. It works only in theory. Skrama broke too. The crystals just spread the crack. There are simply better and tougher steels. Btw this is no tool steel. Unless you count pliers and shit. Then almost everything is tool steel

@@trollmcclure1884 Induction differential heat treatment is used in Lauris Teräs but I have to say its under discussion still how much difference it really can make, in this case hard to evaluate. What did you do with the Skrama before it broke?
The steels that are used to make knives are just leftovers from the steel industry that are originally engineer for example making tools out of steel.
80crv2 is a tool steel if you can see this point of view.
Just by thickening the skramas spine the knife endures harder use so instead of this differential heat treatment adding 4mm to the spine would have resulted in a truly robust construction and by lowering the overall hardness would have done the trick which would result in a more tougher blade like 55-57hrc. There would not be any need for a differential heat treatment at all which is actually not a very cheap procedure.
The spine of the blade is usually heat treated to a lower hrc like around 52hrc when differenttially heat treating when the edge of the blade itself is around 59hrc. That is too hard for a long blade. One mistake and it can crack up to the hamara.
Just by lowering the hrc to 54-55 in a 3-4mm blade would have worked better.
Skrama is a chopping tool after all. The new age Leuku size blades have too high hardness. Thats why they wont endure life but people buy more knives since the high hrc blades break easily in general use. People usually like to use knives for many tasks and sometimes its just too much for the knife. Marttiini used to make Leukus which had lower hrc and in wood chopping they were superb.
If you want to chop wood or something harder just buy an axe, you will save a lot of money and wont be disappointed in the future.

They fixed the heat treatment issues on this. Mine came with the worst heat treatment I had ever seen. Edge chipped like if the material was a chocolate cookie instead of steel... For those wise guys, not only this was a known issue in some batches they made, but also I repair knives for living since the mid 90s,where I also got my degree in chemistry/metallurgy. No edge type or edge angle, can work,if the heat treatment is of. Grinds were also the worst and most uneven I had ever seen. If all issues are now fixed, then its a hell of a hard use beater knife,if not and Joe just got lucky, then its still a shitty knife.

I think laurin metalli gives their 240mm heavy duty leuku the same heat treat as the skrama, i tested the rockwell on two one was 53 (on the outside at least) and one was 50, could be a good alternative to the skrama if it does have the same heat treat

The legendary unbreakable tip of the J-puukko was terminated big time!!! The brick test was an unimaginable sad moment. That "good" knife broke like a Ka-bar Beker ;-) Are you serious? According to your previous short videos about the Jaakaripuukkos, these knives were thought to be indestructible (even the DK guys were following your story). Tip unbreakable lol!!! 🙂🙂🙂
You had been saying these words. Remember? What we need now is a tough Mora Robust-like knife, 140mm long and 4mm thick ..or a Gerber Strongarm with unbreakable tip..
PS. I am finished with the finish steels ;-) Don't forget your gold old standards of yours please. Elite toughness of the knife, means reaching the Iron rod and enduring close to 6-10 mins.

Well Finnish bladesmiths are half industrial made Puukkos actually are made for working which is quite rare.
Most of the knives produced abroad are not made to be used as tools all day everyday, so there is a very good reason to prefer Finlands Puukko-knives.
In Finland Puukkos are a part of Finlands History and used in everyday life as tools.
People use puukkos in work and after the work day they go to have a beer in a bar openly carrying theyre Puukkos and its considered normal. The police dont mind and the security personel dont mind.
Unless the person is a junkie or some local criminal. If youre just a normal guy, dressed normal, acting normal and have a normal reason to carry a Puukko its not a problem to carry almoast anykind of Puukko, knife or folders.

Cold steel drop forged WASP dagger shuld be good challenge for tip test and stabbing to car. I would like too see results. Greetings from Czech.

The fixed blades of Cold Steel are not interesting, but the many of Cold Steels folders are very good. The axis locking mechanism actually works and the blades are nice. Cold steels handles are embarrasing, but at least the whole knife isnt shit. Just the plastic handles must be removed and build the handle again and anatomicly reinforced after buying the Cold Steel folding knives.
After that its a very nice knife.
