    Stopping in a luxury EV with the ventilation+radio off is definitely something unique. It feels as if your ears are plugged, there is a pressure but it feels like you've gone deaf. I can't imagine what the effects of another 100kg of sound dampening would be, probably the same up to 30kph.
    Interesting side note, if they had gone for a much bigger battery capacity you would need a truck licence to legally drive it in most of Europe like the Hummer EV

    Rolls-Royce was MADE for electrification as they have always strived for the uber-quiet "magic carpet" ride. And keep in mind--every RR has been named after a "silent power entity" (aside from the Corniche and Carmargue--both French locals): Phantom, Wraith, Shadow, Dawn, Spirit, Seraph, Cloud, Ghost, etc. RR traveling in hushed quiet via electrification is ideal! Elegant, sophisticated and civilized as always. Love it.

    A lot of people are complaining about the range…300 miles is the equivalent to driving from Newcastle to London. How many times a day do you drive that far? Never!…I personally think 300 miles range for an electric 3 tonne vehicle is insane! What Rolls Royce has made with the Spectre is definitely a few years ahead compared to other brand manufacturers. Some can’t even get 100 - 200 mile from a 100% charge. I’d never buy an EV because i’m a petrol head but I would buy a electric Rolls Royce because they’ve always been about comfort and quality which is what they’re all about. Even with a V12.. they’re silent so what difference does an electric one make?

    I honestly did expect this type of range, but man something in me just wishes for some form of ultra-range 800 mile electric Rolls that you can just get in and cross entire countries without ever having to leave the car for other than short breaks here and there. But then again most of these will probably be sold to clients who rarely take the car out of their local region, to which 300 miles is probably more than enough.

    • @TriviaChallenge

      300miles is loads of range, you need to stop for toilet breaks, drink, lunch! Then you charge.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TriviaChallenge As someone who does 1000 mile trips a couple times a year, it really ain't that much. Usually drive at least 300 miles between toilet breaks, goin those speeds on the Autobahn can be covered fairly quickly - but if I gotta wait 1-2 hours for a charge every 300 miles at conservative speeds, that can easily add 20-30% extra travel time. And don't get me wrong it's not just that part, it's also about having to plan very specific routes which will also add time and less room for error/freedom of choice. Currently I give room for one night hotel stay mid-trip, but that stop can be entirely based on how far I get depending on traffic on route, fatigue levels, and hotel location/availability - and if a strict route is planned, there just is so much less freedom on the trip itself.
      I mean it's not so bad that it can't be overcome of course, but when you're used to just knowing the direction you're driving, and hopping in behind the wheel and going, that level of relaxed approach is worth a lot.
      Granted, again, the usecase of typical Rolls owners is of course very different from what I just described, but when I think Rolls I think ultimate luxury, and freedom IS the ultimate luxury. Having the freedom of range is something I would expect if I was to consider myself an owner of the Rolls experience.
      Something I hope they will look into in the future, is perhaps a small range extender in the form of hydrogen fuel cell technology. I think this as an experimental luxury approach to clean electric drive could solve many of the issues at hand - and it being a Rolls, there is room to spend on niche technologies like this.

    • @skierpage
      @skierpage ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't have de to wait 1-2 hours to recharge. Most decent EVs recharge from 10-80% in 30 minutes or less.
      Hydrogen tanks aren't small; look how cramped the Toyota Mirai is. And a Rolls owner would literally die of embarrassment and humiliation from getting overtaken by mere peasants while a little hydrogen fuel cell range extender was trying to heave 4 tons of car over the French Alps or along a German autobahn. Plug-in hybrids, range extenders, and hydrogen are dead-end technologies for land transportation.

    My wife’s 2018 BMW X3 has that “sailing” option in Eco Pro mode. When releasing your foot off the gas, the transmission disengages essentially putting it in neutral, which gives the feeling of the sailing you’re referring to.

    I see why people think that 300 miles isn't a great range, but don't forget RR had a V12 before. If I compare it to my diesel Fabia greenline sure, it's half the range. I think we should compare it to the RR Wraith though, which has a 83 liter tank. If you do the math that will bring you about 356 miles of range. The difference isn't really that big.
    There is one legitimate point that anti-EV people have, that is charging up. In northern Europe there is a great infrastucture, but with such a big battery, charging will always take about half an hour. Some people will find that frustrating, but realistically if you drive more than 200 miles in one sitting you're going to want to take a toilet break, grab a coffee and maybe even some food. When you're ready to drive again your car has finished charging.

    Interestingly, the airconditioning is only loud because Rolls Royce designed it that way. They easily have the ability to make a completely silent airconditioner, but people tend not to like it as they don't know when it is working or not

    Know that we're living in the crazy times when it comes to a power that these cars produce but I never thought I will see a day in which Kia's family hatchback will produce the same amount of HP as Rolls's GT coupe car.
    And yes, this car isn't that much about an outright pace but the game in this field had moved on and I feel like RR could have done a tad more.
    Stunning car nonetheless.

    Loved the presentation here, excellent way of showcasing this machine. JWW, you have an understanding of bringing true touch of class to this beautiful brand, as you do with Aston Martin. I really appreciate Spectre, the future looks good.
    Regarding the charging infrastructure, I understand the clientbase as it beats having to get out at petrol stations, generally not that nice. Using any fast charger and grabbing a cup of coffee.. for longer stops Tesla Superchargers are nearly everywhere and also around nice restaurants and other establishments other than petrol stations. Having lunch takes longer than charging :)

    good point on being the only type of car where EV makes sense. Because let's be real here - EVs are not so eco friendly as they're pictured anyway. Take Germany for example pumping those coal powerplants, especially since Putin shut off Nordstream. If it's so weirdly quite even on video - I can only imagine how weird that silence appears in real life for you. Imho silence is one of core luxury aspects.

    I guess Rolls Royce will soon find out if that range is good enough. I don't think it is. Not even close. I don't expect customers to be happy with these cars, but we'll see. I want to be able to take a Rolls Royce on a long journey so I can arrive refreshed. Personally, I would never buy an electric Rolls until the range is at least 600 miles real world range - driven the way I want, with a heavy right foot if I feel like it, with the air con on all the time, in cold weather or hot weather etc.
    I also don't buy the silence thing. Didn't Rolls have to engineer noise INTO the Ghost because people felt sick if it was too quiet?

    • @clifbradley
      @clifbradley ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. The absence of sound freaked people out because they felt like they were in a deprivation chamber. So sound deadening was removed in the doors and floors and then they were adding in a sound in the C range above 32 decibels.

    • @rare6499
      @rare6499 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s sold out for approaching 2 years, it has the most pre-orders for any model Rolls-Royce has ever released. The range is plenty. Anyone traveling for more than 300 miles is flying in this sector, they aren’t driving.

    • @gregorygant4242
      @gregorygant4242 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 400 miles would be more than adequate for most folks .

    • @remarkable99
      @remarkable99 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rare6499 Nah. People want to be able to do a round trip of more than 300 miles without re-charging e.g. 175 miles there, and 175 miles back. And no one is getting in a jet for that. Plus, it's nonsense to say that everyone who buys a rolls flies by private yet. That's just James repeating Rolls Royce marketing talking points. To afford a Rolls Royce, you only need single to low double digit millions wealth (not annual income). To afford real private jet travel, you need a budget of millions *per* *year* (unless you spend almost no hours flying). And that's without even considering the future second hand market. As for the order book - we'll see how much people like them once they get them. Plenty of people thought they'd like a Taycan and so bought them, but they're not usable either. Hence so many being given back to dealers. The truth is - 300 miles is not enough range for an EV. Not in a $30K car, not in a $200K car, and certainly not in a $500K car. It's a fantasy to pretend otherwise.

    • @rare6499
      @rare6499 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@remarkable99 it’s still a highly usable range for most people. Of course it could be ‘better’. But that’s where the technology is at currently, and given the car is already sold out for its first two years of production with more orders incoming, there seem to be enough clients who are more than happy with the range.

    300 miles is sure fine for UK. Did expect more, but this will suit 90 percent of owners. That gets you from London borough to your second home up country fine on one charge. Even more comfortably when you stop for the lavatory and fast charge for 30 minutes. My bladder at 27 doesn't last 300 miles 😂 so ones hardly inconvenienced. I imagine they don't make a battery small but powerful and light enough to fit in a car that already weighs so much. This car is interesting. I would love to be a passenger in one just once.
