  • Extraction Explained: Understanding Cannabis Derived Terpenes
Nick Tennant, Founder & CTO of Precision Extraction Solutions, discusses terpenes - the naturally occurring compound responsible for producing scents in plants. Check out the video below to learn more about what terpenes are, where they can be found, how they are beneficial and how Precision Extraction Solutions has developed a cutting edge process for isolating and extracting terpenes to be added to cannabis products.
    What are terpenes? 00:12
    Benefits of terpenes 01:43
Extraction and isolation of terpenes 02:36
    Regulations of Terpene Additives 5:50
As more states make the push to legalize cannabis products, people across the country are becoming more and more familiar with the cannabinoids THC, and CBD - two natural compounds that are found in cannabis. While cannabinoids have dominated much of the conversation around cannabis products, there is another equally important compound that hasn’t received as much publicity - terpenes.
Terpenes are organic compounds that are produced naturally by plants and are responsible for the plant’s unique scent and flavor. Because of the potent scents that terpenes produce, plants rely on these compounds for signaling purposes, whether it’s to ward off would-be predators or attract potential pollinators.
Terpenes are found most commonly in plants like conifers, cannabis and citrus, however, they can also be found in different species of insects as well as in some mammals. In humans, terpenes are produced biosynthetically meaning that they form naturally within the body. These antimicrobial, antiviral terpenes can be critically important as they are capable of helping the body destroy bacteria, detoxify, relax and ultimately achieve homeostasis.
When terpenes are paired with the aforementioned cannabinoids THC and CBD, the trio produces what is known as an entourage effect. When these compounds come together, they can create beneficial effects that might not be achieved with just one cannabinoid. It is also important to note that minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN play a huge role in this entourage effect as well.
Because of the beneficial entourage effect, many cannabis companies are interested in adding extracted terpenes to their CBD and THC products. While terpenes are found throughout nature - most commonly in conifers - many state laws restrict non-cannabis terpenes from being added to cannabis products. Unfortunately, because of how delicate these compounds are, the extraction of terpenes from a cannabis plant is not something just anyone can do. This is, of course, where Precision Extraction Solutions comes in.
The main issue with safely extracting terpenes stems from the fact that they are prone to degradation and their molecular structure is easily altered with heat. At the end of the process, extractors are left with a soupy mixture of terpenes and solvent. This is why Precision uses light hydrocarbons such as propane and butane to extract terpenes. Since propane and butane have such a low boiling point, very light heat can be used to remove the solvent without adversely affecting the terpene's molecular structure.
Thanks to the extensive research we have done at Precision Extraction Solutions, these incredibly beneficial terpenes can be separated from the major cannabinoid constituents of a cannabis concentrate and added to a full suite of cannabis products, further increasing value propositions for cannabis businesses.

Been looking for cannabis terpenes at local cannabis shops here in the bay area and it's been impossible to find. I did find it one time in Santa Cruz by blue river before they went to canada in 2015. Be awesome to see terpene drops at the dispensary again

Is there a big difference between the terpene/thc sauce and the final thc free product? Are there losses in Flavonoids or terpenoids while seperating thc from terpenes? And what would you call as a "fullspectrum cannabis derived live resin" product? I need to know more about this

So...if I decarb for tinctures at home am I not getting terpenes? Do people who smoke not get terpenes?

    • @DaKoTA602
      @DaKoTA602 ปีที่แล้ว

I’m gonna say you get notes of your terps during the initial lighting process, first few drags that’s why it has such a strong flavor profile when combusted by flame then half way into a bowl it loses that flavor. Terps are derived at a solid 43 degrees c with alittle over 1100 psi with CO2. After you pull your terps you can decarb then apply more heat more pressure then you get an oil that also has fats so you have to then filter out the fat. We use ethanol.

If the general terpene content of cannabis is around 1 to 3 percent average weight and terpene content of bho or shatter is less than one percent can the remaining terpenes be extracted from the left over material?

    • @DaKoTA602

You end up with hash oil that has fats in it that needs to be filtered out. We make a few different things from it but the distillate gets terps added to it which kind of eats away your potency. Terps are strong as fuck they say it’s a good cleaner.

I make and wear a blend of CBT's as a cologne. I must ask you, I have started buying delta 8 THC distillate and mixing terpenes into the distillate to fill my own carts. I have only been filling one cart at a time, (and as is necessary) in doing so, heating up my distillate to get it to its runny state in order to fill my cart. Every time I am heating my distillate, am I ruining my terps???

also we should clean the machine every 2 weeks
none the less we shoulkd continue finding good terpenes on other plants to find the derivitives for healthier kosher foods like four sigmatic to help keep homoeostasis and study rhobosomes for food and to keep the parasites off our food

    best salesman,
I am looking for a small machine that can make Stevia Extracts in Drop form, I want to get rid of the bitter taste as much as possible. does one have a machine for me? if so, do you have documentation and price statements.
later I also want a machine that can make Stevia crystal sugar in cubes, also if you have a machine for this I would like information.
the best form would be that I can do different things with 1 machine, for example pressing olive oil, apricot kernels, grape seeds, ginger oil, Black Seed Oil and so on. I would be very grateful if you can advise and help me to buy the right machines that work well as parts for different applications. I await your reply and wish you good business.

Extraction and isolation of terpenes and terpenoids from cannabis plant is too delicate, and not industrial scalable (very expensive). Terpenes content within cannabis matrix is too low by weight%, therefore is not worth it.
That's why you use conifer trees 🤙
