Transport is one of the toughest possible sectors to be in, the amount of regulation can be overwhelming. It’s good that you have such enthusiasm for life, you’re going to need every ounce of it. Don’t keep too many eggs in one basket. Try to find a niche. Understand the accounting and watch your cash flow / overheads. Don’t undersell yourself just to get work, anyone can be a busy fool (many are). You can’t compete on price with larger operators, so don’t try to - you don’t need to. Don’t restrict your pricing just to a mileage rate, look at all the variables. Be reliable. Good customers recognise and value it, more than paint jobs. I think you already know that you’re starting on a shoe string budget, £10k for diesel might get you rolling but you’ll be burning through more than that in no time at all. The numbers will get bigger, so can the risks. Be careful. Think about work life balance. Oh, and if your partner has just done the TM course without any background knowledge at all she already deserves a medal and will be doing incredibly well to pass (ten out of ten for even trying).
thing is you could say the same thing about any buisness venture, trucking can be extremely feasble. if hes consistent and follows the right advice from people in the industry. he can grow his company, i genuinly dislike that mindset that you have, people can achieve what ever they wish to. hes starting small which in result will teach him as he ventures forth, do you think anyone got anywhere in life with your mindset? also he can compete in the industry itll just take him some time. hope you fix that limiting mindset of yours mate and all the best.
I just retired after 45 years of trucking, I worked for lots of different companies during that time and I can tell you in all honesty that making money out of haulage is definitely difficult to say the least, but good luck to you pal! You’re gonna need it.

Fantastic, honest video.... Great stuff. How have you gone about get traction work and how did you cost the job up. Keep up the awesome work. Truly inspiring.
Yep its not an easy game to get started in. But ignore all of the negative feedback. Because you can make a reasonable living if you do your research. And you seem to have done that. The only thing I would say is do not spend money on things that will not make you money. So the truck is the most important part of the journey. keep it well maintained. But the one thing I would not have done is have such an expensive paint job done. It does not earn you a penny more, and could have waited until you had money coming in. I also for the first year of operation only paid myself the minimum amount. As the rest went into the business. But you have a good attitude so just get dug in and work like hell until you have recovered some of the initial outlay. Best of luck I really mean that, it take's guts and determination to go it alone...
