Have you tried 3 lorries. . The first vehicle pays for the fixed costs of the other two vehicles, which you run at a nice gross profit. From that point on you just need turnover, repeat business that pays their bill to you. Thank for the video. I did crunch the numbers once and found that if you work for an established operator as a PAYE employee then you will take home the same wages but with much less headache of cashflow, crawling for business, always getting business, and those fuel and maintenance bills, or massive 'new truck' payments. Good luck!👍
Yes you are right totally about it that being a driver pays same money what you have left being an operator especially with just one truck. With second truck you have a bit more left and with third as you say you start seeing nice profit left behind. This is what we are aiming at to get the third truck and will apply for it soon. There is a shortage of trucks nowadays so this is the issue we are facing. Hopefully we will grow one day as it’s a good business to run. Are you operator yourself?
Thank you for this video. Am I’m currently applying for a O license now. Luckily I can take my time with fuel prices the way they are. Loved the video it helped me compare my own estimated costs.
Thank you for watching and glad it was helpful. We see the prices of fuel and drivers and trucks going up and everything else too only the customers don’t wanna pay more. First of all, thanks for information, you helps a lot 🙏🏻 i have a question: Starting a cargo van company instead of a truck company its more profitable because of the low maintenance costs (tires, fuel, etc) or would the profit be much lower?
With trucks you will have better profits but also higher risk and costs so maybe start of Vans and expand into trucks if you feel this is the right way to grow in the future
Hi Agnes and Jash, very informative as usual. Shaun from Steem Trans here. We are almost there securing the operating centre in the Tilbury area. I couldn’t help hear the insurance is £1000 a month for 2 trucks. Is that correct? If so what type of insurance do you have? Shaun
Hi Shaun hope you and Raymond are well. It’s good to hear from you and it’s great news that you are going ahead with your operators licence. As you are new business with 0years no claims bonus therefore you will pay around £1000 per month for 2 trucks. If you shop around you might get few hundred pounds off. You can try Cornish insurance 01840213836. Insurance is based on what you haul. We have the following covers Amazon,RHA,CMR,Public liability and employer liability insurance. You must inform the insurer what is the work you will be doing and they will give you what you need. Your 2nd year renewal should be around £7k for 2 trucks annually. I will send you Jash number and it will be easy for you to contact him directly.
Hi Agnes, loving the transport industry videos. May I ask you to cover what you do (with examples of poss) checking drivers hrs, what programs can be used to help. What happens with proving insurance and maintenance for example. What other things do you do, thanks Neil
That’s great questions and I should definitely prepare something to answer these. Thank you and just out of curiosity are you owner operator yourselves ? By the name I would have thought so.
Hi, yes Neptune courier is my venture just under a year now, I used to drive 4 axel tippers (not mine) but gave up my license and went for same day courier work with the Courier Exchange (HX little brother) Studying for my transport managers at the moment, hense the questions.
Hey, quick question, I thought you had to have the vehicles in your possession (or at least, have a purchase order or lease contract in place) when applying for the operating licence, but you seem to imply you can apply without yet having them. Could you please clarify? Many thanks!
Hi Thanks for your question You cannot legally operate the vehicle if you don’t have an O licence. Also it will be difficult to get an insurance for a commercial vehicle with no licence as well. So yes you got it right from my video- first O license- where you specifically state how many vehicles will you be operating- then once you have approval from Traffic Commissioner- you then go and buy a truck (lease hire or purchase) I hope that helps
What about the operating centre ? How much does it cost ? I plan to buy 2 16 seater minibuses for school contract work. But i need to know where to find operating centres and how much it would cost ? Theres no information online hence why i ask. Thank in advance 🙂

@@haseebmehraban443 we found our on Facebook through ads we put up on groups . They were available immediately but it’s not always the case and most times you have to wait some time.
Hi Dominik It will really depend on how many miles you are doing, the weigh you are pulling and the hours you are doing in the week. It usually is difficult to find traction only jobs unless you are in a contact with a company. Rate will also depend on the distance ect. It could be anywhere between £3-£5 per mile. It is difficult to give specific numbers as it varies from job to job.
Hi great video guys. Just wanted to ask what’s a good price for an operator centre space. I’m getting prices ranging from £50 to £200 per week just for 1 vehicle and trailer.
We actually googled it. Also sometimes is easier to look for mechanics first for your PMIs and they often know which or even operate from such yard. So call them first and ask if they know of any in the area
Thank you for the great video. I think you do not use factoring company for getting paid quickly. Isn't it worth it to use a factoring company to get a quicker cash flow? I also wonder if you invoice the customers directly? Because you use the load board, you will have several customers and it is not easy to follow up the invoices and payments. How do you deal with that? :)
Hi Dan thank you for great feedback. We do not use any factoring company as I'm an accountant so take care of it myself. We do invoice customers directly using the Haulage exchange platform as it has accounting module included and it's easy to truck who paid if used properly (again - I'm on top of it as well). I think it might be an interesting video to show how this is dealt with, what do you think?
@@AgnesMann It will be wonderful to make a video and give a tour of haulage exchange platform and all its features. It mostly confirms what I have found so far about this business plus other things that i didn't know about them. Thanks again :)
@Dan. Dan that is a great idea and will relieve you of worry, you will end up paying a fee of 20% of the invoice though which is better than losing your entire bill. Some customers don't like their invoice to you to be factorised but thats their problem not yours. Many banks will do factorisation for you.
@@a320nick so far we had no issue with customers paying bills so there would be no point paying 20% to the bank. Thank you for the idea we might need to use it going forward
After 30 years of the sorts of expenditure you kind folks mention plus decades of big companies not paying, I decided to be just a CE driver .... now with agencies and companies being responsible for all you mention I simply collect £600.00-800.00 a week for 3-4 days driving a week....I would encourage anyone to give it a go as I did all those decades ago...after turning over £millions and 60-80hr weeks, I had enough of the experience but very much enjoy being a very aware and quality driver sorting out any issues for the firm as part of driver duties. Always explain the solution achieved when calling the office not demanding help for others to sort.
I was an owner operator in USA, and to start with truck and paperwork was 40000 dollars, but per month expenses may be 9000 dollars, but I don't recommend that 😂

hi that is great glad to hear.if you don't buy trailer you loose some opportunities as 9/10 jobs requires trailers (best to get 2.9 as well as more opportunities. Unless you already have contract for unit only. Hope this helps
Just wondering how you view the industry now fuel addblue costs through the roof. Also with the economy likely in recession later in the year with a lot of operators with trucks parked be going after the work ye are doing say put in 10 lorries at a certain rate . I’m in Ireland and see crowds that were muck shifting pulling sand trailers not pulling fridges roro trailers .not be work for them all .
I agree somewhat. Anyone thinking of starting haulage business should hold fire. I think the slowdown in transport business is related to 🇷🇺 Russia and Ukrainian also increasing in covid cases and lockdown of some cities in 🇨🇳 china. Increase in fuel ⛽️ eating into profits. This is temporary and I do believe work will pick up later into this year. Don’t be discourage by current situation . If you have guaranteed work then go for it.
We count the distance, conciser the load we pulling (the weight and type of goods) and time it will take us. Plus you have to consider other factors like vehicle maintenance, fuel, drivers wages. If it’s a short run you charge a bit higher rate as it’s then time In finding other load that might not be available. It really depends. You need work out what is your daily running cost and then as your margin to it so you’re not making a loss. Hope that helps
You forgot to mention that since you started the business in a 1 year period in your current situation, how much was the profits each month average after the expensive 🤔

Hi Agnes Thanks for valuable information. I would highly appreciate if you can let me know how can I contact you to get your advice. I am a beginner and planning to start working as owners operator.
That is so true especially when only owing one truck. But then if you have two trucks and they are both on the road running all the time you are starting to be better off and then also have potential to grow. It’s just how much risk one is willing to take and hustle that comes with it.
It was even more stressful when Jash sat at home during whole pandemic and did not have any work through the agency and I was the only person bringing the income for months. This was the escape from the unfair agency world which favours people and give them work when others are left sitting home waiting forever. This was the best decision despite the difficult times of pandemic. Now pandemic is gone but fuel prices makes things less worthwhile but that’s just another matter. Are you in the transport business
I don’t have one yet but I’ll put something together. In a mean time just go to gov.Uk and type operating licence so you see what’s the process. Thank you
the drivers shortage is no longer an issue I'm afraid, having the business always brings more money than working for someone else. hope this makes sense.

First of all, thanks for information, you helps a lot 🙏🏻 i have a question:
Starting a cargo van company instead of a truck company its more profitable because of the low maintenance costs (tires, fuel, etc) or would the profit be much lower?
With trucks you will have better profits but also higher risk and costs so maybe start of Vans and expand into trucks if you feel this is the right way to grow in the future
Very informative video for new beginners for running transportation business..
Glad you liked it. Are you looking to start?

Hey, quick question, I thought you had to have the vehicles in your possession (or at least, have a purchase order or lease contract in place) when applying for the operating licence, but you seem to imply you can apply without yet having them. Could you please clarify? Many thanks!
Hi
Thanks for your question
You cannot legally operate the vehicle if you don’t have an O licence. Also it will be difficult to get an insurance for a commercial vehicle with no licence as well. So yes you got it right from my video- first O license- where you specifically state how many vehicles will you be operating- then once you have approval from Traffic Commissioner- you then go and buy a truck (lease hire or purchase)
I hope that helps
What about the operating centre ?
How much does it cost ?
I plan to buy 2 16 seater minibuses for school contract work.
But i need to know where to find operating centres and how much it would cost ?
Theres no information online hence why i ask.

Hi,
What are you rates for traction only, minimum weekly rates or per day, also what is the rate per kilometre please.
Thank you
Hi Dominik
It will really depend on how many miles you are doing, the weigh you are pulling and the hours you are doing in the week. It usually is difficult to find traction only jobs unless you are in a contact with a company. Rate will also depend on the distance ect. It could be anywhere between £3-£5 per mile.
It is difficult to give specific numbers as it varies from job to job.
Thanks for information.
How much does haulage exchange charge?
around £2k a year
Hi great video guys. Just wanted to ask what’s a good price for an operator centre space. I’m getting prices ranging from £50 to £200 per week just for 1 vehicle and trailer.
Hi. It depends on the traffic area and individual centres. Where we are is around 300 per vehicle.
Mechanics ??
Im confused, i meant how rent gna have to pay for operationing centres?
cost of operating centres varies from place to place. You will have to speak with the operating centre.
Hey, good video. How did you find a operating centre to park your vehicles?
We actually googled it. Also sometimes is easier to look for mechanics first for your PMIs and they often know which or even operate from such yard. So call them first and ask if they know of any in the area
Thanks Appreciate the response. @@AgnesMann
To be honest I am researching about the haulage business in the UK and the information you guys are providing are so valuable to me.
How much do you pay for finance for each truck after your deposite ?
all depends on current interest rated , amount of down payment and cost of the truck.
Always explain the solution achieved when calling the office not demanding help for others to sort.

hi that is great glad to hear.if you don't buy trailer you loose some opportunities as 9/10 jobs requires trailers (best to get 2.9 as well as more opportunities.
How you guys valuate work for example how much mile will cost for customer and etc. . Thank you in advance .
Kind Regards
We count the distance, conciser the load we pulling (the weight and type of goods) and time it will take us. Plus you have to consider other factors like vehicle maintenance, fuel, drivers wages. If it’s a short run you charge a bit higher rate as it’s then time In finding other load that might not be available. It really depends. You need work out what is your daily running cost and then as your margin to it so you’re not making a loss. Hope that helps
@@AgnesMann morning, do you have like formul to calculate?
No I don’t. You need to know your costs then add the margin and that would be what you need to charge

@@AgnesMann Thank you for your reply. Also, can you suggest which types of Volvo trucks and trailers will be best suited?
your better working for a company or agency still long hours without the worry
That is so true especially when only owing one truck. But then if you have two trucks and they are both on the road running all the time you are starting to be better off and then also have potential to grow. It’s just how much risk one is willing to take and hustle that comes with it.
