"As of 25 December 2023, 875 episodes of Doctor Who have aired. This includes one television movie and multiple specials, and encompasses 304 stories over 39 seasons, starting in 1963. Additionally, four charity specials and two animated serials have also been aired. "
in addition there are other spin off tv series like K9 and Company, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventores, etc

if you were to ever watch the show, the best way would be to start with 2005 series 1. it has definitely aged, the budget was fairly low in the beginning, and it can get a bit silly at times, but at the heart of it, it’s a really really great show.

@@chrisdavies9821 Yeah I gotta say I didn’t like the episode that much either but the quality of the acting and Ncuti (at least for me) already feeling like a new, distinct,
incarnation of the doctor made that episode worth watching, with a great script and great dynamics between the main characters is really very promising for the future of the show. And RTD can write great episodes - we’ve seen that before with episodes like Turn Left and Midnight and co-writing The Waters of Mars and the fact that Moffat is returning is also quite exciting. But yeah the fact that even when there is a not so great episode but the script and acting and overall atmosphere still holds it up and keeps people watching is all a good sign.
It’s annoying cos if I hadn’t found out the release date for the new series, May would come really quickly, but now I know it’s gonna feel like such a long wait.

How many episodes? Lordy, lordy, I can't answer that. Let's just say a crap-ton, lol. But they are SOOOO worth it!! --- Start with the series reboot in 2005, watch all the way through the current Doctor. Then, if you are as addicted as me by the end of that, you will want to go back and watch all the originals. And when you do that you will discover so many little origin stories and inside jokes and call-backs that went right over your head in the new episodes, and you will love the show even more! -- Welcome to the rabbit-hole that is Doctor Who! Trust me, you are in good company.

  • @pinkdalek1
    @pinkdalek1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

yeah, long term uk fan here. totally agree, IDEALLY start at 2005 episode called 'Rose' that will give you 694 (45 min average) episodes to catch up on.
Now... ok... that's pretty daunting... but trust me... the time will fly by and there will be times when you might do a few episodes (especially 2 parters) in one sitting and the ride is wild and all the better if you start at a beginning.
You COULD also 'start' at this years Christmas episode (the church on ruby road) which gives us a (Another) new doctor (you will find out about the mechanics of that as time passes) and a fresh new production style/co operation/corporation etc and is 'designed' as a starting point for new viewers. (the series/story is 60 years old... we have the occasional reset so it makes sense to people who have no idea what's going on/or have simply lost the plot! this has included the production/writing teams!)
So what i am saying is... you could start with both 'Rose' from what we call nu who (2005) while also keeping track of totally current episodes (nu who 2 (2024) - the new series which starts in May on Disney+)
and at times you might have questions and we might direct you to stories/episodes of classic who (1963-1995)
(ALL classic who and some nu who are stories with more than a single episode.. many classic who stories had 4 episodes of 25 mins each, some new who stories are 2 or 3 episodes long... its all a bit unnecessarily complicated... which is what makes being a fan of the series so much fun... there IS no definitive answer to many questions about doctor who. ...we have some ideas... clues...but they might not be right....because...its all wibblily wobblily frankly. (prediction: you will learn the term 'Wibblily Wobblily' from the 10th Doctor - AND use it in conversation one day!)
you gonna laugh you gonna cry, you gonna feel pains and gut wrenches that will make you marvel at this FAMILY program which has throughout its history been loud and proud in bringing relevant conversations of politics, sexuality, religion, family, chosen family, colonisation, business, loneliness, trauma, love, compassion and joy - to the family table for discussion/thought.
like the best soap opera you ever watched...where the neighbours are alien, some of them try to keep their heads down and avoid trouble but also some of the others are armed, some of them are very angry about the lawnmower, some of them just moved in and did something unspeakable at the dog park... and the local bars just opened for gossip.
    strap in.
    its a wild ride!

you could always sign up for one specific writer's season - the big one people have love and nostalgia for is the 2005 Russel T Davis set, which is 4 seasons, 55 episodes with a spectacular sendoff. after that you've got a new vibe with a different showrunner, with new doctor and companions, so it feels like a solid breakoff point if you're satisfied with that. People are a little more divided on whether the stuff after that is as worth it, but I think it's often extremely good and rarely dull

As of right now there are 875 episodes of Doctor Who. However, while this show does reward those who go through every episode, it’s not recommended to do so. Typically, people recommend starting at either the first episode (“An Unearthly Child”) or the start of the 2005 revival/continuation (“Rose”), then jump around to whatever sounds good.
We are currently in the era of the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and this seems to be an era meant for newcomers.
Note: Due to TV policies at the time, many episodes from the first six seasons are missing from the studio’s archives and it’s unknown if they’ll ever be found. However, thanks to fans of the day, all the audio survives and animations have been done in a way to ‘resurrect’ many of these lost episodes.

like others are saying, you can start from the 2005 revival, which is the 9th doctor. You can also start with the 10th, 11th, 12th, or 13th. There are varying opinions about each doctor's run, and whether its a good run or not. Personally, the 2005 revival with the 9th doctor is set up for new viewers, so if you start there then you can get the "full experience" of mystery and fun. But anywhere is fine, there's like 100+ episodes from 2005 to the 14th doctor, but you'll get there no matter where you start.

  • @Swenglish

How many episodes really depends how far back you go. There are many perfectly viable jumping on points. If you go back to the very beginning in 1963, you can't even find all the episodes because some were lost to time. Archiving back then was not great. But there are reconstructions and stuff, and assuming you wanted to watch *everything,* that's 875 episodes in total, I think. But all the clips in these compilations are from the revival era, beginning in 2005.

  • @moujayay

New Doctor Who, which is only 2005 and newer, is 175 Episodes over 13 Seasons PLUS Specials that are at least one every season. This would include the 9th Doctor all the way to the end of the 13th Doctor. Over December 2023 we got the Christmas Special concerning the 14th Doctor which is 4 Episodes and now awaiting the start of Season 14 with the 15th Doctor.
Classic Doctor Who itself has 26 Seasons over 8 Doctors. Especially the really old episodes could not all be restored but from those that survived there are a total of 703 Episodes (if I did not miscount) still to watch before the 2005 revival.
As someone that did not grow up with Doctor Who in the first place but loves the series ever since I discovered it, I would highly recommend starting with the revive from 2005 and later go back to the classic Doctor Who. The entry level would be not as much the setup but only the setting which makes it a bit easier and then when you are overly hyped by DW itself the lookback to the classics is way easier ^^

There are hundreds of episodes from the original series and the current series. Over 60 years of videos. I would recommend starting with Matt Smiths doctor. His seemed to be the best for new fans. I have been watching since I was 4. I'm 37 now. I used to watch the original series on PBS late at night. My favorite of the original was the 4th doctor. Much of the new doctors have overlaps between the different doctors and the different companions. Matt Smith started with his own new companion that's why I think it's a great starter Doctor. It also is kinda cool to see him call down a big scarry alien on his first episode, tell the alien who he is, and then tell the alien to run, and it totally freaks out and runs away. 😂 Just gave him such confidence.

I'd love to see you find a compilation that has a more lighthearted tone, so you can get an understanding that the show is not always serious and gloomy and heart wrenching, there is a lot of whimsy and fun there too. I just don't want you to get a skewed idea of the tone of the show overall just because of only having been exposed to the most profound and dramatic moments. It is easily my biggest obsession of all time, and I absolutely recommend watching it. There are tons of episodes, but most fans will agree that starting with the episodes made since the revival of the series (Known as New or Nu Who) is perfectly fine. In other words, you can jump ahead past the first twenty six seasons (Known as Classic Who), and not have to worry about that enormous backlog of content, at least until you decide to watch all or parts of Classic, if you ever do.

    - Doctor Who started in 1963 and the episodes from then up to 1989 with the 7th Doctor. I'm not sure how many total episodes there are from this period but there are 26 seasons, each season will have roughly 4-6 stories. Each story is done in about 3 or 4 parts (although all of these can vary quite a lot)
    - In 1996 there was a single Television Movie where we get the 8th Doctor
    - Then in 2005, the show was revived starting with the 9th Doctor. You don't need to have seen the Classic Who in order to watch this and can comfortably do so without however, the show runners were often people who had grown up watching Classic Who and so various bits of dialogue, tech, aliens/monsters, and scenes will have references to the Classical Who (for those who know, the Doctor Who continuity can really REALLY be on point sometimes). There are currently 13 series of New Who, each will have about 13 or so episodes.
    - Additionally, there are various "specials" which would come out around events like Christmas or Easter with the exception of the David Tennant (10th Doctor) 2008-20010 Specials which was like a mini-series extension to series 4 (although did include a Christmas and an Easter themed episode)
Like anything, there's loads of extra Lore to Doctor Who in the form of things like Books, Comics, Audiobooks, etc...
I would say it's a pretty good watch if you're into that kind of stuff. Very iconic and has had a pretty substantial cultural impact.
These Doctor Who Edits often try and portray how someone would like to showcase or imagine one particular aspect of The Doctor or the Doctor Who universe. I would say that most of the show doesn't really present itself in this dark way and often tries to be light-hearted around certain issues (as it is meant to be a family show, including children).

First of all found you and I like your energy and subbed lol.
So Dr. Who just had its 60th anniversery so it is a very long lasting show.. These are all from "New Who" which was the relaunch of the show back in 2005.
If you wanted to "start" Dr Who.....obviously I would say "well the beggining of new who.
However its complicated. Everyone will have different answers. For me I would say "watch it how I watched it".
Which means start on Season 5, ep 1 "The Eleventh hour" I think its the best jump off point. Then if you like it....go back to Season 1 ep 1 "Rose" to catch up to then continue onto Season 6 to today.
When I first was introduced I knew of it but didnt want to watch it (in hindsight stupid of me lol) but was captivated by how unique the show is.
These compilations show all the heart that the show has and drama but also leave out how goofy and funny the show is too. Its really a great balance.
The Doctor is my hero. I think The Doctor is such an interesting character and someone to strive to be while also learning the limits.
If you watch hope you like it. Would always welcome another Who fan lol.
And to this day I still stand by that its also the bloodiest show ever.

Start with "Blink" (10th episode of third series). Like the new viewer, the main character is learning about the Doctor as events unfold. It also introduced the now fan-popular term "timey-wimey" to describe aspects of time travel (eg, in the cold open she receives in 2007 a message from 1969 related to her immediate future -- "Duck, NOW!"). You already know what the 10th Doctor and Martha Jones and the TARDIS look like, so you will recognize them.

To really know if you're going to want to get involved, we always recommend an episode titled "blink." If you're hooked by that stand alone episode you start with the modern era series one and go from there. Yes the show is sixty years going, that doesn't mean you have to start there. Once you've got a few seasons under your belt, explore those old ones. But it's not a requirement.

Another nice reaction. A lot of these videos are heavy on the 11th and 12th Doctors because the head writer during that period had a tendency to write big dramatic and emotional speeches, but this at least has a nice mix of the other modern Doctors. I hope someone gives you a more light-hearted video to watch, as these are not quite representative.of the series as a whole.
My recommendation always is to start with S1E1 Rose (2005) and maybe watch select episodes from the Classic era and then decide if you want to go back to those. I know someone will have the amount of time it takes.

But like I said earlier, I think the youtube video Doctor Who: 60th Anniversary | Universe by TH-camr The Confession Dial will at least give you the scope of what this shows about, also the editing is just amazing, and not just show the modern era, but also the classic as well from the 1963. So I recommend you to watch this after watching the video list that have been provided by the other comments~ :D

On BBC IPlayer, doctor who (1963-1996), there’s nearly 30 seasons, but im not sure how many episodes there r for that one. Than for doctor who (2005-2022) (still on BBC IPlayer), there’s 13 seasons which has 176 episodes. And the new doctor who (2023-)(also on BBC IPlayer) is still only on its 1st season with 11 episodes.

Start in 2005. Go back after that if you want more. As others have said, this show is generally quite light-hearted and even goofy. But the underlying story is driven by the title… Doctor? Doctor who? We learn about him as he discovers and rediscovers himself. These things do lead to the heavier, meaningful moments. This duality of lightheartedness and true character development/revelation is why many people love the show, and why many people dismiss it, unable to see the deeper side that is the trunk through the branches of silly looking aliens.

Absolutely Loved this show from the first time i saw it as a child soooo long ago, till now that is :( .. but this is now the second one of these clipped conglomeration videos i have seen with you and neither one does justice to the shows range well at all.. you should stop bothering with them and just check out a few episodes of the show itself, THAT will give you a good idea of the appeal and why it's been on the air for so many years.. Recommend starting in the 2005 reawakening with Christopher Eccleston, as the show before that, though very good for stories, did not have the technology or funding to bring it to life very well visually and it reminds me of watching the old Godzilla monster movies, if they were made by TV from the time.. ;)

This past November was the 60th Anniversary. But I do agree with most folks here that starting with the new series (2005) is best. Or even starting with the new new series (the 60th Anniversary specials) is probably safer than starting with the classic series. But I've you really get hooked, you should still go back and find some of the classic series.

I am sorry if I am repeating what anyone else says in the comments. Keeping it simple, there are two eras of the show, new and old. The show is 60 years old and the new era started in 2005. It has way too many episodes to count, but I recommend people to watch from the new reboot starting in 2005 even though many would disagree. You have seen some of the strongest moments from these edits and how the show works is that many plots work through episodes to full seasons or even decades of backstory to be resolved eventually. Coming from someone who watches it “casually” with friends you can see how addicting it is. Hope this helps!

    Hello !
Just discovered your channel but here's a little guide to Doctor Who cause it can seem a bit hard to know where to start:
The show is divided in three series:
    - One from 1963 to 1989 (26 seasons)
    - One from 2005 to 2022 (13 series)
    - One that just started this year.
There is a continuity between all of them but there is no need to have watch the previous ones before.
For you I'll advice to start at either series 1 (2005) or series 5 (which aired on 2010) or you could also just wait and watch live the incoming series starting with the 2023 Xmas special

    • @GhostPurple69
      @GhostPurple69 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

this is the best summary, yes.
the show celebrated its 60th anniversary a little under two months ago. although there is a running continuity since 1963, every few years there's sort of a soft reboot where people can hop in without needing to have seen any of the prior episodes.
the most recent soft reset is, well, two months ago-so tbh you might as well just start now, with the 2023 christmas special, that leads into the upcoming new "season one," this spring on disney plus.
if you want to hop back a bit, the previous best onboarding point is series 1 (2005).
if you want to get really funky with it, season 25 (1988) and season 7 (1970) are very similar onboarding points for what we now call the "classic series."
i don't necessarily recommend classic who right off the bat, unless you're way into strange low-budget mid-century sci-fi, but if that's a taste you've already got, it's really good stuff. (my personal favorites are the black-and-white stuff-seasons 1-6-and the seventh doctor era-seasons 24-26. all while noting that these are slightly eccentric choices. 😆)

I technically started with the tv movie with the 8th doctor played by Paul McGann which then got me to watch the show's revival in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston. It was that series that got me hooked. It's a good starting point for someone new to the show. New Who has 13 seasons with approx 13/14 episodes a season plus specials. The Classic series ran from the 60s up to the mid 80s with over 20 years worth of episodes. It could be quite daunting to start there. You could always go back to the Classics if (when 😉) you get hooked. It's not all angst and seriousness, but a lot of fun and silliness too. That's travelling through time and space for you.

It started as a kids show, good guy against baddies, Boffin alien scientist using knowledge against brutes. Companions collected follow the vastly superior doctor to help him. Great simple escapism. Plots and enemies developed over several episodes without self contained plots, you had to watch one to get the next one. Modern show is written for older people, a plot per episode, trendy 'doctor' beats all foes by blither and blarney, teaching kids you don't need knowledge just the kit and you can talk yourself in/out of anything, the companions need to have a role beyond simply following the doctor so they introduce self doubt, individualism, adult themes, negativism and anti-hero sentiments because he would be too good to be believed otherwise. He can no longer be a good guy, he has to be someone kept in check becuase he has killed too many monsters trying to destroy the universe, and torn up inside with loneliness so he cant be allowed to be successful by himself. Good concept sunk in the modern era, no longer happy and escapist just more real life dragged into the show

There's not a season every ear and some seasons later on are only like 3 episodes long. It can be a quick watch, cause it's very engaging. (TBH it's also a great way to build your channel. Glad this is hooking you so much. There's a boat-load of episodes ( think there's around 170. If you include Classic Who [the episodes before to 2005 revival] you'll have over 800), but you get so invested you eventually think 'there's not enough' haha.
The compilations already had spoilers, so this choice is up to you but,
If you wanna keep watching these very talented people's edits, I'd recommend getting more specific per companions and whatnot, as you'll get lots of repeat clips (for good reason as they are very good ones) on the more generalized/all encompassing edits.
One of the 2 I'm about to recommend I believe is a plot line best enjoyed as a surprise, but it involves one of my favorite characters and story ever done so I recommend it nonetheless.

    - Doctor Who | My Reward - another by AllOfTheStars (is another good all-around edit)

They are sort of like having a bunch of miniseries, each is complete, so once one ends, you can decide when you feel like watching another. Or perhaps a better way to explain it, Doctor Who is like a book series where each book is a separate story but they all have the same main character.

The doctor is such a complex character. The character of the doctor is a time traveling alien that regenerates their body in order to keep going- but their whole body changes. It’s a horrifyingly painful way to be nearly immortal, and they have been alive for a very very long time. Traveling in time and space in their TARDIS, helping people and making friends- but also making enemies and seeing people hurt and seeing people dying. Most of the show isn’t this dark. Fun time travel adventures, but for how long the show has been going on (60 years as of recently) it does show the arc of a merciful yet merciless immortal who has lost way too much.

Depending on if you start with the classic Doctor Who series or the 2005 continuation the episodes run anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour or so each. The classic series' stories run like serials with usually 4-6 episodes making up a storyline. The longest storyline being something like 14 episodes later in the original series run.
The 2005 continuing series are mostly 1 episode stories running about an hour each. Better production quality and writing but starts with the 9th Doctor. The classic is doctors 1-7 with Doctor 8 having only a movie in 1996 and a minisode in the new era.
I know this is a short one but if you want to know who the Doctor is, do a reaction video on this one, the Doctor's war speech The Zygon Inversion. It'll tell you why the doctor is who he/she currently is.

Thats not to say it doesn’t have its great moments on occasion(and it does), but if you decide to get into it, be aware its “family viewing” and about 25% of the time its plot resolutions really don’t make logical sense, just handwavy “its alright in the end kids” .
Recommend you start with “Rose” and watch the (modern) season 1 , see how you get on with it, before committing to multiple seasons.

The doctor definitely has a dark side - though I don’t think the current incarnation will touch on that story point anytime soon.
How many episodes depends upon where you start from. If you tried to start way back with classic who from the 60s (not recommended) it’s over 800 episodes (though a lot of the early episodes were only 15 minutes long) - and some of those are missing anyway. I’m a big DW fan and even I couldn’t make it through season 1 of classic when I tried- I’ve only seen select episodes of classic here and there.
If you started with the 2005 soft reboot (series 1 episode 1 titled “Rose”) I think it’s around 175 episodes - plus a handful of minisodes. If you can tackle that many, I’d highly recommend starting here.
If that’s too many, well It’s designed where you can jump on board at pretty much any point when a new actor takes over the title role, which just happened with the current actor only having one full episode so far (the 2023 Christmas special titled “The Church on Ruby Road”) - though on Christmas Specials you have to judge on a curve so it feels like an odd place to recommend someone starting with.
If you start with the 14th doctor, when the show transitioned over to Disney+ (and had a change in show runner - usually a slightly better jumping on point), it’s only 4 episodes (the 14th was a sort of bridge time during the transition from BBC to Disney+) starting with the episode “the Star Beast” from 2023 (though that particular one wasn’t the best) All 4 are actually specials (the 3 60th anniversary specials and then the aforementioned 2023 Christmas special) but the anniversary specials have a few more callbacks and returning characters than normal so the impact if you don’t know who’s who might be diminished.
If you want to try just a single episode, I’d recommend checking out series 3 episode 10 “Blink” from 2007. You don’t have to know anything about the show to enjoy that episode as it’s completely standalone.

Honestly you can start at the first episode of almost any new doctor's first season and know whats going on. Although some are better than others. Most people start off with ep 1 of the new who revival that started in 2005 and go back to watch the classic eps later if theyre into it (thats what I'd suggest personally even if rose is a bit of a goofy ep. I still love new who s1). It is a lot of eps but i dont think anyone is that strict in the vein of 'you have to watch every classic ep in order to be a real fan' just due to the peculiarities of being a long running british show. The bbc actually used to tape over their old shows so it is currently impossible to watch the entirety of doctor who. Dont worry too much.

How many since the very beginning - YIKES!! How many since 2005 - Less yikes! Just to mention that the Classic series which ran from 1963 to '89 were serialized and, for the lattermost stories, into four to six segments. From 2005, the stories are usually self-contained but some seasons have an overarching theme which concludes with a season finale. The seasons are generally around a dozen episodes of contained stories and one, possibly two, two-parters. For instance, Sesskasays has been going through NuWho and she took around four years covering an episode per video. She also started on the classic series and has reached 1980 covering two half-hour segments per video. She also edits prudently and sort of gets away with it. The BBC can be a . . . . !

You could easily start with the current season. There’s only been one episode and it’s a bit of a virtual reboot. The new doctor doesn’t carry any of the baggage of previous incarnations because they still exist (see, you already need to see this years Christmas episodes to understand why). The old doctor still lives. There is a playfulness and sense of intense curiosity about this new incarnation, as the show progresses and you feel the need to learn more, you can always dip your toes into past incarnations of the doctor and I’m sure you will want to know more. Each new doctor has his/her own flavor and tone. For a show that’s 60+ years old, there’s a lot of lore. I would just start with the new guy right now to make it’s easy and less overwhelming.

So Doctor Who is split up into 2 eras, Classic (1963-1989), and Revival (2005-Now). All the same show, it's just that it was cancelled in 1989 (not because it was bad per say, the BBC just wanted it gone) but fans brought it back 2005.
    {Edit: forgot to mention there was a 1996 Movie made as a first attempt to bring it back, Starring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor, but that kind of failed. Thankfully Paul has been doing work for Big Finish Productions, an audio drama studio most known for their hundreds amount of Doctor Who content}
Classic has 26 seasons across 694 episodes (though they were all 23 minutes on average), however, 97 of the 60s episodes are missing for reasons that would take too long for this comment. A big difference though with classic from most shows is that they had serialized stories. For example the first 4 episodes of the show are all in the "An Unearthly Child" story. The next 7 episodes are all in "The Daleks" story. And so on and so forth.
The Revival has 13 seasons with, if I recall 180 or so episodes, with a more "normal" format, each episode being around 45 minutes - 1 hour. Series 14 coming this year (UK calls them series, not seasons)
It's generally agreed upon to start with the Revival, Series 1 episode 1 "Rose", with Christopher Eccelstone as the 9th Doctor, And maybe watch Classic here and there for "important episodes", as the revival was made for new comers in mind. But if you wanna be a mad lad and watch classic first, or even at the same time, be my guest

Funnily enough calling the new who episodes series helps distinguish between the revival episodes and the classic episodes since the classic ones use seasons, it just makes episodes easier to identify.

He never kills people... directly. All he wants to do is help. But when you're the smartest person in the universe and stupid people keep doing stupid things around you... people die. But he keeps trying. Always trying to help.
