I’m so glad I came across this channel. Thank you . I will never paint my deck again . Every year I’m painting my deck never again, it always ends up peeling.
I have to remove several layers of white paint from my redwood deck, so I appreciate this video. Hope I can do it my 70 year old self. P.S. love the way you and your son are with one another. If your kids like you, you are a good person.
Just Moved into our home two weeks ago and previous owner painted my entire deck dark red! Ugh 😣 and of course it’s peeling! The railings still look fabulous, but the entire deck and stairs all need to be redone! so I figured I better start researching I’m glad I found your channel because now I know exactly what I need to do! Thank god it’s not too large so something me and my son can do ourselves 🎉 thank you!
Black, 43 year old stay at home wife and I do all the home work. Thank you for the honesty in how long it took and how much of the supplies you used. I was especially inspired to see your son power washing because I have a son that age - he can help! Thank you!
I'm planning on doing this same project next spring/summer with the deck on this home I bought a year ago. Thanks so much for the info, I now have a much better understanding of the process involved, and it is pretty much what my original plan was. Take the long road and enjoy the results for many years to come, that is how I have always approached projects like this. Fast and easy can give you great results, like paint, but usually end up being way more work in the end. Don't *EVER* paint your deck. Great advice.
Very helpful! I moved into a house last October with a terrible painted deck and have been wondering what I could do with it. Now I know, your video helped a lot! Thank you!
Thank you! We had a painter convince us painting was better than a certain stain we wanted to go with...and fast forward 2 years it looks horrible. I'm going to go for this come spring and stain it myself.
Thank you, wish I would have seen this a couple years ago because I was ignorant in deck prep, thought I knew it all....and I don't. Now in process of stripping oil based paint and this process is going to suck and take a lot of time.....but will follow someone now who has done it and don't feel so all alone.
So glad I found your video! I can’t wait to start on the deck and patio, previous owners also painted brown. Ugh whyyy. Anyway, I am stoked… finishing this project this summer will be such an accomplishment and maybe even the husband will help haha
First, I'd like to thank you much for the informative video. I also want to let you know something extremely important. I love that your son was such a great help with pressure spraying the deck down. I was dreading watching him because my uncle, who is 6'5" and all of 350+ lbs. Was using his pressure sprayer and somehow it slipped and the pressure ate the skin off of his palm. I would suggest a couple things for safety. Gloves are very important, as are goggles in case debris flies up into his face. He is closer to the ground so particles could fly into his face easier than to an adult. Lastly, i would suggest he wears pants and a long sleeve T-shirt just as another protection to his skin. I am not trying to tell you what to do. As a Healthcare professional, I just wanted to give advice. I'd hate to see the wonderful young man seriously injured. Again, I appreciate the video.
Thank you, Bonnie. I am about to help my mom do this and didn't realize that about the pressure washer. I did a little research and saw the low pressure (as low as 100 psi) can cause a puncture wound. My mother is older and has thinner skin so I'll be taking a precaution for her. 🥰🫶
Great advice, thanks. Going to start work on my deck within the next couple of weeks. And you're right, there's nothing like doing it the right way even if it takes a little more doing.
I use the same sealer/stain for my deck, but it takes me about 8 hours to seal it, about 400 sq feet. I do it slow, i get the stain in between the boards and the ends. I double and triple stain knots or cracks in the wood. The sealer/stain from Bear is supposed to last 6 to 8 years, I live in South Florida so that is a big negative, it lasts good for about two then I reseal, any longer than 2 years and I risk rot setting in. I just replaced the old wood deck which I had, it had been on the house for 23 years and was in very good shape, only one rotted board. but the under boards and roof below I could not get to and know they had some rot, and when it was ripped up I was right, but not as bad as I had thought, I could have probably gotten another 5 years out of the deck but no more. The contractor was amazed at the condition of the deck since all the similar decks on the houses in my neighborhood were in really bad condition. That was because no one here maintains their decks, so they fall apart. I cannot emphasis enough that with a wood deck you have to maintain it constantly. My Deck is Yellow pine, so I watch it like a hawk. Any gap any possible rot I fill as soon as I can. I go over the deck every year just to check. I do not strip the old stain/sealant off the deck before resealing and this causes me no problems whatsoever. I used to strip the old stain, then sand and then pressure wash the deck lightly, but the pressure washing causes damage to the deck, so only pressure wash at a low setting or you will damage the wood. Like I said I dont have problems with putting stain on old stain, it just makes it darker but I have had no other problems from doing that at all.
Just scuff all the flaking paint off with a deck broom. Blow the debris off with a leaf blower. Then apply a solid stain. Easy peasy. Done. No matter how much prep you put in, you're still going to have to do it again a year or two later. No point in wasting your time doing anything more.
Thanks for your insights! Great video and exactly what I was looking for on ideas/tips. I am getting ready to help my folks in restoring their deck--really don't want to paint/seal over old stuff where prep was done correctly. I'll have the chat with them to manage expectations, and will enjoy spending the time with them.
Lol. I tried a belt sander. That was pointless. My power washer with a flat but didn't do anything. The highest pressure but completely tore into my deck boards and damaged them. Thanks for making this video. I'm gonna try your suggestion. I'm running out of time before this Wisconsin winter hits and I'm starting to panic.
We are in the middle of refinishing our 150 SF deck. Unfortunately the previous owners painted over existing stain that matches the screened in porch. We were planning to paint over again, but had to remove most of the peeling paint with a hand disk-sander that staining seemed possible. The paint I intended to use (Behr Advanced Deck Over Paint) has horrible reviews and their previous version was the subject of a Class Action Lawsuit! I don't want to do all this prep work again in a few years when the paint fails. I came across your video and it reaffirms my belief that stain is better than paint in the long run. Fortunately the sanding was enough so no chemical stripper needed, which I hate. Thank you for this informative video! Keep Crushing It!
Awesome video man thank you. I’m in the middle of restoring my parents deck. They painted their deck with heavy nasty stuff and it’s been horrible trying to remove. DONT PAINT YOUR DECK!
Your deck looks great! I used the same stain on our pergola five years ago. I had to go over it again this year because of some mildew I had to power wash off and sun fading but it was easy and looks great.
Yes, if you live in a moist climate you are going to want to re-stain every other year at the very least. Take care of the wood and the wood will take care of you.
Thank GOD you made this tutorial...I’ve watched so many videos on what to do about our deck...and just been at a loss😩 Even went as far as to higher someone to come do it for me. I’m so attention to detail, this was just what I needed to hear. Thanks.
I’m going through the same nightmare right now . I bought this house and they painted the around pool deck which blew my mind. I did use my Honda pressure washer to take most of the paint and going over the remaining with a diamabrush then In gonna use ur recommended sealant .
Thank you moved to this house and yes the deck is painted. I used the Behr waterproofing on my fence and love it the Transparent Cedar # 501 is a beautiful color going with this on my deck. Thanks for the advice and can't wait to start it slow and worth the time.
Behr has a nice wood stripper useful for paint/stain removal. It can be applied using a roller with a metal tray used for panting. It rinses off easily with a garden hose or low PW.
I am doing this to my deck as well but I am going with composite boards and only restoring the structure and hand rails (I am also replacing the balusters with metal rods) There will be no horizontal surfaced of wood after I am done. Would you say that the prep is still as important on vertical/non-trafficked areas? I have been going back and forth with paint and stain and if I could simply go over the old stuff after cleaning....Thank you!
I moved back home. And Pops house has a BLUE painted deck. Now its half peeled. Almost 10 years after they moved in. Im probably going to start a corner.
I have a deck that was painted over with Behr paint. It is god awful. I have been working all summer to strip the paint. I am going to try the Klean stripper on the last few remaining areas. What did you do with the paint in between the boards? Did you try to get that clean, and if so how did you do that?
I found the Behr semi-transparent weather proofing wood stain & sealer at home depot. It says on the bottle it is 100% Acrylic, which is not stain but similar to latex paint if I am not wrong. I am wondering how the deck looks now although it is still less than their 6-year guarantee. I saw online people recommend to use oil-based stain for deck, which is much easier to restain. Is that the same case using Acrylic?
Just heard of a attachment for an angle grinder. removal called a daimabrush. It looks aggressive, and will a follow up sanding. Looks legit for quick removal if stripping isn’t the option.
I found out the hard way - don't paint decks to start with. Looked great the first few months, then it all went to heck and I've been slowly getting rid of it ever since. Sanding didn't take it off. Pressure washing got the worst of it off. Chemical stripping was a mess. Finally coughed up the bucks and had a team of deck guys come in and get the rest of it off by whatever means they chose to use. Finally have a deck worth looking at.
I feel your pain my brother. But when you sit out there and enjoy a good meal or a cold beer, all the work and $$ is worth it. Depending on where you live, just stain once/year or every other year when it loses color and protection. A brush on a broom stick or a roller, quick, easy job.
@@the_crushlife I do it once a year with clear oil. Just pressure washed it good yesterday to clean it off, the weather is hot and dry today, I'll probably oil it tomorrow as the sun is baking it dry right now. And yep, a steak and a cold one on the deck makes it all worthwhile!
We just had a brand new deck built. I had them use the exact stain/sealer product you used from Behr. The wood is Redwood. I wanted to tone down the red in the wood so I used a stain with green in it. Now my deck is green. What advice do you have on removing or changing a stain color?
Very helpful video Steve. Thank you. Question though. What, if anything, did you do to protect whatever is beneath your balcony/deck when you were using the paint stripper?
I just got thru 15 hours of trying to remove paint any way you think possible 2 straight days and its going to take 2 more full days the paint was a b .. to get off starting to get there tho going to stain usind super deck by sherwinn williams
Too late for me, Why I didn’t look at this video before I made the mistake, thinking about flipping boards over and staining the other side. Really the person who attended me at Benjamin told me painting was better. Crazy crazy now with my decision , thanks
My pleasure. This is a project that just takes time and effort. This is what guys like us have to do when people paint decks! Worth the work in the end!
What did you do to your railings? Keep them painted? I’m assuming they had paint on them. Our deck railings are chipping, thick white paint, really not sure what to do about it.
I left them painted, my ultimate plan was to replace the railing with tight knot cedar posts and new railing, but we sold the farm and left the state before that got done.
Thanks! I bought a house with a 2nd story deck they painted with Cabot deck paint. It didn't last 5 months which I expected :/ now I have ONE question. My little dogs use the yard below the deck. How do I sand and remove material without poisoning my lower yard? Maybe I need to add a patio to the yard (it's just dirt and weeds under the deck) or attach a plastic sheets under my deck like an awning so whatever seeps through at least rolls off the sheets to the outer edge of my yard.. thoughts?
I stained a deck. A couple of days ago and the customer doesn't like the color. Should I go over with another color or just remove. Also there is a lot of inconsistency in the staining too I can see it. I'm not sure why I pressure washed it, then prepped then sanded. Some boards really soaked in the stain then some didn't. What should I do. I also have more to stain. Should I continue or just stop.
Thanks for an informative video. I've got a indoor/covered porch which is painted and would like to refinish it, maybe with a weathered wood look. So I'm wondering how you did in between the boards and how far down you were able to get. Did you do that with the stripper too? Many thanks - Al
After watching a lof of videos , I feel the same way. Painting is a waste of time , it will come off in couple of years , plus the wood doesn't show. The problem is I dont have a week to work on it .. so will just strip the 3 boards with loose paints and paint over again .
Wish I saw this video before I started painting our old decks! We should have sanded the boards! So we chose these colored stains but is that still paining? Will it still peal?
Did you consider using some like the Diamabrush tool? I have seen a lot of reviews on it and I am tempted to try it. Trying to avoid the "chemical" route if possible for a few
GM. I removed all the stain. My question is. I read that if I sand and it rains I would have to sand it again before putting the sealant on. Is this true? Because its going to rain ever other day.
No, you won't need to sand again, just make sure its dry when you stain. Also, when you buy your stain ask the paint expert what they would recommend for your wood.
Thanks for the video. Absolute Noob here, but why did you bother scraping the paint if you were just going to sand it any way? About to start my dec project and these two steps seem redundant.
If you were going to remove paint with a sander you would need a big belt sander that would be pretty tough on the wood. I chose to strip and just lightly sanded prior to staining.
If you could do the job without any eruptions like a regular job how long would it had taken you I realize you're working a full-time job and then doing this on the side how long would it take you to do this as a full-time job? Thank you
I watched video after video and couldn’t decide how to do this best. Never worked with wood before but for some reason I kept saying, “why the hell would someone paint a deck.” I came across your video and I felt like we had the same thought process so I went for it. Definitely time consuming but works well. I logged back in and subscribed. I have a small circular sander and it seemed to work but I was worried about the wood. I’m going to stick with your approach. Stripper works well if I give it that 15 minutes because it is able to soak. Nervous about the ballasters. They run vertical so I’m not sure it will work. Did you use it on yours? How did it go with that section or did you only do the floorboards? Either way thanks again. Plus pretty cool that you included the kids for a team effort. Something they can always say they helped dad with. Cool
great video sir. Any tips for using the klean stripper? I plan on staining next week. Do you think I can get all the prep work done on an 140 sqft deck by then?
Net M, all depends on how many hours you want to put in! For any of these products, I would say don't let it sit very long, just a few minutes. Better to do a second coat and scrape than let it dry. 140 sq. ft. should be a couple days' worth of work. Then just hose off, let dry and stain! Hope it turns out well brother.
My brother is stripping and painting his deck. I told him we can use stripper and he DOESNT WANT TO, for some reason he wants us to scrape it without using stripper first. WTF
This is brutal to watch. I restore decks for a living. You did a great job, however some of the steps I cringed at. Eg-2 weeks using 80 grit paper on a palm sander. This could have been done with a polivac on 1000sqf in 45 mins
Finally someone who don't take shortcuts,I'm in the middle of a similar project myself, great video!

Thank you for your concern Bonny. Its a low PSI power washer. We're doing okay out here.
Thank you, Bonnie. I am about to help my mom do this and didn't realize that about the pressure washer. I did a little research and saw the low pressure (as low as 100 psi) can cause a puncture wound. My mother is older and has thinner skin so I'll be taking a precaution for her. 🥰🫶

You are so right we painted ours and after spring thawing sections peeled off so bad maybe paint too think felt more like a plastic when dry
Really super awesome straight up video 👍

Maybe I need to add a patio to the yard (it's just dirt and weeds under the deck) or attach a plastic sheets under my deck like an awning so whatever seeps through at least rolls off the sheets to the outer edge of my yard.. thoughts?
Thanks doin my deck next week
How did this turn out?
How many square ft did you get with one tub of the redy strip ? Green
I'm not sure, this was years ago. Good luck with the project!
Started mine today
Awesome video! Did you also do the railing? Do you know if the stripper works well there?
The stripper will work anywhere. I left the railing, that will need to fully replaced at some point.
Hope it turns out good!
What Palm Sander do you recommend? Need to know right away.
Thanks
They're all the same.
Do you think you would have still went this route for pine?
I don't know, I'm no expert. If you want scrape or sand the paint off you have to balance that effort and cost with full replacement.
Thanks!
Our deck is stained red, I want to go back and stain it grayish, do I need to do something to remove the red stain or just sand?
Thanks for an informative video. I've got a indoor/covered porch which is painted and would like to refinish it, maybe with a weathered wood look. So I'm wondering how you did in between the boards and how far down you were able to get. Did you do that with the stripper too? Many thanks - Al
I didn't go in between the boards much, I scraped out what I could if I was worried it would show on top.
@@the_crushlife Got it, thanks.
After watching a lof of videos , I feel the same way. Painting is a waste of time , it will come off in couple of years , plus the wood doesn't show. The problem is I dont have a week to work on it .. so will just strip the 3 boards with loose paints and paint over again .
Gotta do what you gotta do.
Wish I saw this video before I started painting our old decks! We should have sanded the boards! So we chose these colored stains but is that still paining? Will it still peal?
Not sure! Stain has a better chance of fading and wearing off than it does actually peeling.
My paint is not coming off. Im using Klean Strip fr home depot. Its giving me so much trouble.
Jasco Premium paint & epoxy remover. you can thank me later.
RADIO MI BARRIL I bought Jasco. Didnt use yet. I hope to thank you later!
@@donnamarie3885 Is Jasco better than Klean Strip in your case? I have very thick paint on my deck. I'm wondering which remover I should use. Thanks!
@@menghu96 The Klean Strip is better.
Did you consider using some like the Diamabrush tool? I have seen a lot of reviews on it and I am tempted to try it. Trying to avoid the "chemical" route if possible for a few
I saw one at Home Depot, didn't want to damage the cedar and I don't have the big gas powered edger either.
@@the_crushlife I’ve been using it. It fits on an angle grinder. Is working well so far and not damaging the wood.
...what about the slats?
@@the_crushlife Thank You very much.
How about the railing? I have a lot of them. Don't know what to do?
Sometimes with railing its best just repaint or rebuild.
If you could do the job without any eruptions like a regular job how long would it had taken you I realize you're working a full-time job and then doing this on the side how long would it take you to do this as a full-time job? Thank you
1 week I'd say.
Cool
Balusters
Great to hear. Thanks Carl and good work.
Thanks man im doing 1300 sq ft deck my first time. Wish me luck.lol
Chip away, chip away. Self-improvement podcasts while doing deck improvement is always a good idea.
Stripping the deck
great video sir.
🎉
My brother is stripping and painting his deck. I told him we can use stripper and he DOESNT WANT TO, for some reason he wants us to scrape it without using stripper first. WTF
Usually, five gallons is the same price as three cans…
This is brutal to watch. I restore decks for a living. You did a great job, however some of the steps I cringed at.
Eg-2 weeks using 80 grit paper on a palm sander. This could have been done with a polivac on 1000sqf in 45 mins
You don't have to watch it Steve. With all the painted decks out there business must be booming for experienced professionals like yourself.
Lol could have hired a drum sanded and done in a day
It is through our own hard work that we reap the greatest reward.
Yes the best stripper. Too bad, not available in canada anymore
Could have turned your two month project into a 3 day project by renting a sandblaster, remove paint and sand all in one. Time is money.
Thank you. I am so happy with the way it came out, I chose elbow grease over increased cost and the use of tools I have no experience with.
