It is a nice reel for coastal bottom fishing. The 3:1 retrieve makes it tough to jig with. It was one of those hybrid reels caught between the popular Senator 3/0 and Jigmaster/Surfmaster 250s, so you don't see them much. Best wishes George - Dennis
Hi Rey - the 99 production started during the World War 2 years. There was actually a model 97 and 98 Silver Beach made prior to the 99. The 99 was one of the first reels to feature the single screw take apart that was later used on the Surfcaster, jig master and Squidder reels. Thanks again for the comments - Dennis
Check with Mysticparts.com for new, the are a Penn arts distributor, and EBAY for used. They are rare, like the reel that I found, you just don't see them around - Dennis
Thanks for the tip. I haven't tried it. The difference in frame width compared to the 500 isn't that much. It's, not like you are making a Jigmaster junior - 501 out of it, so I wouldn't do it unless I was trying to make a reel from two bad ones. Like putting a DelMar gear plate on a Long Beach 65 frame. it's good to know that is an option - Dennis
Hello Dennis! I also have a 99 which is really shiny and in great looking condition. When I try to open it up, it is like a siezed engine... won't budge. After breaking my hands, I threw some gloves on and twisted and finally got it off. It was super clean around the edges where the grooves and notches are. I put some blue grease in there hoping it would help me out next time. I open and shut it (still struggling) a few times before letting it sit. My question is... WHAT GIVES!? haha It is clean and doesn't look like it was ever mistreated but it doesn't open up like you did with yours at 3:21. I am opening it like I do my squidder, but my 140 pops open. Any tips?
There are three finger slots that accept the prongs on the outside rim of the gear side plate. Check that they are clear of any debris. It is easy for water, dirt and salt to get in there and dry. That narrows those channels and can make it difficult to install and or remove. If you want to, you can try widening the channel a little with a flat bladed screwdriver. Not much and please easy if you try. The other cause can be a wrapped or bent side plate. If the mounting plate is out of square, that puts pressure on those mounting points and makes it difficult. You can test for that by removing the mounting piece and putting it on a flat surface. If it is uneven, you would need to replace. Dennis
You are going to have to remove the gear side plate. There are several potential causes. They include a broken eccentric spring, a worn or bent Jack, a worn or bent yoke, a spool frozen to the spool gear and possible a broken spool gear. Once you identify the cause, the fix involves finding the replacement part and following the reassembly instructions at the back and of this video - Thanks for asking - Dennis
If you are looking for the old style replacement, try Ebay. The part is the 24-155 handle. If you want to buy the newer version, Mysticparts.com has them with the rubberized knob. You can view them here www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/24-155.aspx. They also substitute 24s-310 handle here - Dennis
The 160 is the smaller version of the Beachmaster 155. It can be used for casting, but is limited by the lack of bearings. If you want the same form with farther casting capability, you would be better off with the Penn 10. That one has ball bearings for better casting - Dennis
Great tip about removing the tiny dog spring with the reel in a clear plastic one gallon freezer/storage bag!
Glad it was helpful! It is one way to stop the "flying ants"! Dennis
Wow your old new stock 99 is in great condition. The chrome really shines.
It is unused! A rare find at an estate sale.
The Silver Beach was the high-end reel in the 1950's. The frame is nickel-silver. It's a nice reel.

A Penn 99 Sliver Beach ? wow - nice find there Dennis
You just don't find these anymore. They weren't that popular to begin with and there aren't many survivors left. Thanks for viewing - Dennis
Nice reel, awesome job. Always enjoy your videos.
Thanks Michael - this is one of the earliest take apart reels that Penn introduced- I still fish with one! Dennis

Hi Dennis, awesome and informational video as always. Any videos with Penn Fathom lever drag 2 speed or Daiwa BG5000? Keep up the great work!
I haven't seen those reels in my shop lately. I will add them to me list and do them the next time one is in for service. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi I just got one of these reels at a local flea market and the spool release is not working. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks

I have been looking for that handle for a while, any suggestions?

What type of grease and oil are you using in this video and degreaser
I use Penn Precision reel grease and oil. I also use Cal's universal drag grease and reels oils. I use purple power and penetrating oils as degreasers
