One of the things I love about Johnny Winter is the characteristic voice of his playing. There are a few guitarist I can recognize wtih 2-3 notes. For me, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, and Hendrix have such unique guitar voices, it doesn't matter what they are playing or with whom, I can recognize them even in the background. I always loved this guy. I first saw him in 1970.
We literally tore up Johnny Winter And Live! on my 8-track player back in the day. I was fortunate to see him play in the clubs around Dallas. He is a legend. We he sings Dallas he means it!
This does my heart good. Last time I saw Johnny was live in '90. He could barely walk. He could still play but his voice was weak. Until just now I've been avoiding all the video clips because I didn't know how much better he'd gotten. Go Johnny Go!

Because Johnny was a Blues man through & through. Where as Jimi was someone who was such a innovator on so many levels that he just pushed music to it's limits shattering any would be boundaries. And? It wasn't until guy's like Robin Trower, and Frank Marino that Anyone could even come close to capturing Jimi's Sound. But? To this day? No one has ever put the whole Jimi Hendrix experiance package completely together, with his on stage swagger, electronic wizardry, and raw talent. One guy in this generation is coming close ... Eric Gales. But still? He ain't no Jimi! But as far as I'm concerned? The Best Electric Blues player of all time? Hands down! It's Johnny Winter! I don't think Even Jimi could of beat him in a pure Blues Environment!

In my opinion he was better than hendrix as i believe he was a more versatile player, at the very least, hes up there with him.
I have been blessed in my life, with opportunities to see The Master many times. And be able to just hang out and converse together, with no one else around. He IS a Beautiful Spirit. As a guitar player the top three guitar players I wanted to see and did, Johnny winter, bb king and eric clapton. I've seen may more but those three stood out the most for me.
I just appreciate being with others that truly have loved his music over the years. We share the same love. He is a true legend and I have no doubt that he will be in the hall of fame in time. It would be a touching moment to watch him receive the honor when he's alive. He certainly deserves it. He has been a benchmark for me for the last 40 years listening to him and "Sweet Papa John" is absolute art.
Wow even in his later years I hear a lot of people say he didn't sound the same like he did in his prime, but hell he sounds and plays better then most even during his so called declining years.
In my teens and 20's I saw a lot of the great ones play even back then I knew they were very special but looking back now I realize how truly lucky and blessed I was to see some of the greatest of all time musicians play! They let there talent and music speak for how great they were and were humble to just do what they loved.They were the show they didn't need anything else. Not like some musicians today......

I saw Johnny at the LA Shrine in 70', he double billed with Mountain and that auditorium was over capacity and there was some great hash working its way through the people. When the lights were off or low all you could see was Johnny's hair flying wildly around the stage.
Those notes Johnny plays seem to come effortlessly from his amp. The entire band is good but Johnny's slide playing is on another level. It's powerful, lyrically muscular music. Thanks for being with us for a while Johnny.
man i had the pleasure of seeing Johnny Winter back in 92. he was freakin awesome. the biggest speakers you could imagine for a 3 hour show. just shows he held nothing back
I had the awesome opportunity to see Johnny Winter 18th St Pier, Bar & Grill San Leon, Texas in 2011, we were right up front & center the whole concert he was excellent! If you don't really get into the blues, this man will make you love 'em!
Johnny Winter has been one of my idols both in my life and my career. He is nothing short of remarkable. Had the chance to see him many times over the years since the 60's and he just kept getting better and better!!!!! he's "much too white" !!!!
I saw him here in Las Vegas at the Blues Fest with Edgar, Kim Simmonds and Rick Derringer (Leslie West could not make it) but Johnny was fabulous. Sat 3 rows center stage. He was flawless. He closed with 61, joined by them all..man it brought down the house. You'd have loved it. I realized it may be the last time I'd see him...an emotional thing, but man was he on. He shined. Legend.
I remember going to see Winter back in the 70's when he was peaking. Songs like this would have the entire audience bopping up and down and sometimes I was worried for my safety, as I was sure the floors were going to collapse. Johnny's sound-men back in those days would also gradually crank up the volume levels to what had to be officially 'ear bleed'. The speed of this song in those days was probably double of what is played here. A living legend.
If these people do insist on comparing musicians then I think they should consider WARREN HAYNES AND WALTER TROUT AMONG many others who are amazingly talented guitar players,singers,and songwriters I'm just saying hell don't dare forget BUDDY GUY!

Johnny...I've seen you 6 times and loved every minute. You were the best! YOU knew how to rock...and YOU knew how to play the best blues. Nobody was/is better! We will miss you. You were absolutely incredible! I never heard you make a mistake. Every time I saw you...after the show...I said to myself..."Wow...how can a guitar player be that good?"...you were unbelievable...absolutely unbelievable." You showed the world how blues is supposed to be played. Many future blues guitarists will get their inspiration from you. "You are truly "THE"... "blues God!" Thank you...and you are well loved! I saw Johnny a couple of times.But the best memory I have of him was back in probably 71 or 72.They were closing the Filmore West in Long Beach CA and had a 6 day,6pm to 6am concert.I worked at the local harbor free clinic and they needed volunteers to work the stage and stuffSo yeah,thats what I got to do for 6 days.Some of the headliners were ZZTop,(didnt have beards yet),Mama Lion,Seigal Schwall(sp)Mountain,Sweathog.I tried looking the place up and the Filmore West was in Frisco,but I'm pretty sure that's what they called the place on Ocean Blvd in Long Beach.Who caresSo Johnny was supposed to be one of the last acts but they said he ODed on Red Mountain and F40s.I watched them carry him out.His arms were stretched out straight,they carried him like a human cross. But back then,everybody was drinking Red Mountain out of the gallon,throw it over your shoulder jugs and eatin F40s like PEZ candy.You could walk down the street in my neighborhood and just watch the guys fall of curbs flat on their faces.Anyway,so they carried him out that night and he came back and played the following night.I was little ways over from stage left,ten feet from him.He was playing a flying V and it was an old school auditorium stage with a curtain.He was all nervous and weird standing there,but when the curtain came up he just broke it off. He never opened his eyes once and I'll never forget how he looked under the blue light.He looked like he was made of silver,It was unbelievable.I'm so glad I was able to see all the things I did in that era.Late 60's thru the 70's were just an unbelievable time.SO much change and new concepts developing.Got to see Hendrix,got to see Marley by himself and with the original Wailers,that was more 80s though,got to see absolute jazz and blues greats at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach before that place went sideways in the late 70s.But my friends would sneak me in when the All Stars were playing there in the late 60s.I got to be 20 feet from Miles Davis, George Benson when he was a straight ahead jazz player,,Dizzy,,Freddie Hubbard,,Pinetop Perkins,George Duke,Stanley Clark,Butterfield,Elvin Bishop(who was a total asshole,thought he was some god because he wrote fooled around and fell in love,spit on the audience to start some spit on the audience fad)Mike Bloomfield,I mean icons,,legends,,I cant remember all the artists I was able to see.I got to sit in with blues guys at the Sweetwater in Redondo.Man,I hate to say it,I really do,but those were the days.I always hated it when old people said that shit to me when I was young,but cmon.man,this generation has to start doing something. Something special creatively..Hip hop was a great start,I've got cassettes of Tupac,NWA,Public Enemy,A Tribe,LL Cool,Snoop,oops,whats he called now,Biggie..What happened?HowTF did CoolJ and IceCube end up selling denture cream on teevee shows?You think Jimi Hendrix would have played a detective on a crime show? Anyone? My kid manages a 4-star yuppie Restaurant and a blue ribbon brewery. And he knows I am a Johnny fan, he had to listen to it from birth. Turns out Johnny was going to the restaurant fairly often the last few years of his life. And my bonehead kid didn't tell me or call me, till after he died. WTF
I dig Johnny. This one of my favorite songs that he dids. Hi version holds fond memories of seeing him in a big venue a couole kf small benues and when I was hanging out at Cactus the Club in Kileen, Texas where I saw the original Cactus, the original Spirit and listemed to this sing and an entire live album (rare) all of the time netween the club and hime and the base that I built pre-cast concrete on diring thise times in the late 70's. My favorite memory of him was playing this song at UTA. ❤

Way back when I was visiting a girlfriend, I was about 17. When I stepped in her family's livingroom I saw Johnny Winter for the first time ever on dutch television. Never heard of the man before. My jaws dropped to the floor, I instantly forgot about that girl. Now 45 years later, the love for that girl is long time gone but the love for Johnny still remains.

I agree with all the previous posts. As a young adult I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn in 1985 and I thought “I’ve seen the best”. SRV was great. But when I saw Johnny Winter in 1987 my mind was forever changed. To this day Johnny Winter (God rest his soul) is the best I’ve ever seen. I know, that’s my opinion only. However I also feel (and I think many would agree) that Johnny was is/was the most underrated guitarist to date.
I saw JW in the 70s when he was still able to stay on his feet and play..just a fender amp and his band. Hes pushin 70 now and cant see anymore but he'll always be a legend.
I love JW. His "Second Winter" Album is proably one of the best blues LP ever. Has his skills deminished? Maybe, but I do not care! I would still go see him, 'cause he is still great. And you never know, that one night might be one that he has his game on. Would not want to miss that. Good too see him playing still.

grew up in Beaumont with Johnny, had the same luthier, named Chip, and I got a lesson in life via Johhny. Chip was setting up one of my guitars, a lucite strat, and when I tried to see what he had done with it, I said I thought it was still difficult to play. He said Johnny was by the day before and shredded it. Nuff said!!
I saw Johnny live on Friday night, 5 days after the Super Bowl. He did an amazing 90 non-stop minute set, got a standing ovation and did "Dust My Broom" and "Highway 61" as encores. Probably the best show I've seen, ever. It's funny how after the awful Super Bowl, nobody's been writing that the BEPs are too frail to be performing, or that Christine A is too old to remember the national anthem's lyrics. Personally, I'm hoping Johnny will do the Super Bowl halftime show in 2012.
When you've played the blues your whole life, jammed with the greatest musicians alive, lived breathed and slept the blues through countless decades like Johnny Winter has done, playing becomes mind to fingers, simple as that. He might be old and frail, but he's knows better than anyone onstage what to do in that situation and it shows. A great guitar player is made through age and experiance. The original killer.
What you probably didn't see in this video is that Derek has been playing his whole set and brought Johhny up as guest. I think Derek is right where he wants to be here. Yes and the Firebird is killer.

Johnny...I've seen you 6 times and loved every minute. You were the best! YOU knew how to rock...and YOU knew how to play the best blues. Nobody was/is better! We will miss you. You were absolutely incredible! I never heard you make a mistake. Every time I saw you...after the show...I said to myself..."Wow...how can a guitar player be that good?"...you were unbelievable...absolutely unbelievable." You showed the world how blues is supposed to be played. Many future blues guitarists will get their inspiration from you. "You are truly "THE"... "blues God!" Thank you...and you are well loved! I have met johnny winter and derek a few times, they are truly class acts, very humble and extraordinarily talented...we are all better off for these people pursuing music in their lives, thanks is all I have

I saw Johnny in Nashville one of the best concert I ever seen
I saw Johnny a couple of times.But the best memory I have of him was back in probably 71 or 72.They were closing the Filmore West in Long Beach CA and had a 6 day,6pm to 6am concert.I worked at the local harbor free clinic and they needed volunteers to work the stage and stuffSo yeah,thats what I got to do for 6 days.Some of the headliners were ZZTop,(didnt have beards yet),Mama Lion,Seigal Schwall(sp)Mountain,Sweathog.I tried looking the place up and the Filmore West was in Frisco,but I'm pretty sure that's what they called the place on Ocean Blvd in Long Beach.Who caresSo Johnny was supposed to be one of the last acts but they said he ODed on Red Mountain and F40s.I watched them carry him out.His arms were stretched out straight,they carried him like a human cross. But back then,everybody was drinking Red Mountain out of the gallon,throw it over your shoulder jugs and eatin F40s like PEZ candy.You could walk down the street in my neighborhood and just watch the guys fall of curbs flat on their faces.Anyway,so they carried him out that night and he came back and played the following night.I was little ways over from stage left,ten feet from him.He was playing a flying V and it was an old school auditorium stage with a curtain.He was all nervous and weird standing there,but when the curtain came up he just broke it off. He never opened his eyes once and I'll never forget how he looked under the blue light.He looked like he was made of silver,It was unbelievable.I'm so glad I was able to see all the things I did in that era.Late 60's thru the 70's were just an unbelievable time.SO much change and new concepts developing.Got to see Hendrix,got to see Marley by himself and with the original Wailers,that was more 80s though,got to see absolute jazz and blues greats at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach before that place went sideways in the late 70s.But my friends would sneak me in when the All Stars were playing there in the late 60s.I got to be 20 feet from Miles Davis, George Benson when he was a straight ahead jazz player,,Dizzy,,Freddie Hubbard,,Pinetop Perkins,George Duke,Stanley Clark,Butterfield,Elvin Bishop(who was a total asshole,thought he was some god because he wrote fooled around and fell in love,spit on the audience to start some spit on the audience fad)Mike Bloomfield,I mean icons,,legends,,I cant remember all the artists I was able to see.I got to sit in with blues guys at the Sweetwater in Redondo.Man,I hate to say it,I really do,but those were the days.I always hated it when old people said that shit to me when I was young,but cmon.man,this generation has to start doing something. Something special creatively..Hip hop was a great start,I've got cassettes of Tupac,NWA,Public Enemy,A Tribe,LL Cool,Snoop,oops,whats he called now,Biggie..What happened?HowTF did CoolJ and IceCube end up selling denture cream on teevee shows?You think Jimi Hendrix would have played a detective on a crime show? Anyone? Or you think Janis Joplin would do a bra commercial? the last funky thing to come out of R&B was Prince.And the last really good thing to come out of the rock scene were Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine.Cobain was right there with the Beatles as a song writer.Heart Shaped Box is one of the best examples of pure American music, ever and I mean ever.And meanwhile,Joe Bonamsa(sp) is playing the Greek,I mean cmon man.Squeaky clean,perfectly packaged and produced blues.Haters stop hatin,sure,hes a great player,as good as it gets,great singer,but I aint buyin itI could sing circles around him and I'm an old man.And cmon,Johnny Winter told me,well a group of us,youre not supposed to understand the words.Listen to Johnny sing Mean Town Blues on his produced and recorded version of Mean Town Blues.Somebody tell me what hes saying.It's who ya know and who ya blowalways has been,but MTV killed the musician.Its sad.Everybody sounds like everybody else,hell theres even some guy flat out copying that cartoonist Larson,I mean flat out straight up copying him,drawing, content,everything and nobody even cares.Nothing but a cookie cutter society,glad I'm on my way out and not in.

My kid manages a 4-star yuppie Restaurant and a blue ribbon brewery. And he knows I am a Johnny fan, he had to listen to it from birth. Turns out Johnny was going to the restaurant fairly often the last few years of his life. And my bonehead kid didn't tell me or call me, till after he died. WTF
I dig Johnny. This one of my favorite songs that he dids. Hi version holds fond memories of seeing him in a big venue a couole kf small benues and when I was hanging out at Cactus the Club in Kileen, Texas where I saw the original Cactus, the original Spirit and listemed to this sing and an entire live album (rare) all of the time netween the club and hime and the base that I built pre-cast concrete on diring thise times in the late 70's. My favorite memory of him was playing this song at UTA. ❤
Sonny Landreth is for sure one of the unsung best blues players around today. But Johnny Winter was my first concert in New Orleans when I was 14.

69-70 caught Johnny and Edgar in Davenport,Iowa...baseball stadium on the Mississippi....hwy. 61 ran thru a couple of hundred feet away.....opening act was Black Oak Arkansas.....$1.50 cover...

Way back when I was visiting a girlfriend, I was about 17. When I stepped in her family's livingroom I saw Johnny Winter for the first time ever on dutch television. Never heard of the man before. My jaws dropped to the floor, I instantly forgot about that girl.
Now 45 years later, the love for that girl is long time gone but the love for Johnny still remains.

I agree with all the previous posts. As a young adult I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn in 1985 and I thought “I’ve seen the best”. SRV was great. But when I saw Johnny Winter in 1987 my mind was forever changed. To this day Johnny Winter (God rest his soul) is the best I’ve ever seen. I know, that’s my opinion only. However I also feel (and I think many would agree) that Johnny was is/was the most underrated guitarist to date.
I saw JW in the 70s when he was still able to stay on his feet and play..just a fender amp and his band. Hes pushin 70 now and cant see anymore but he'll always be a legend.
Johnny is the best guitarist of all time. No one else even comes close.

I love JW. His "Second Winter" Album is proably one of the best blues LP ever. Has his skills deminished? Maybe, but I do not care! I would still go see him, 'cause he is still great. And you never know, that one night might be one that he has his game on. Would not want to miss that. Good too see him playing still.

You have to see the sights of Bob;s upbringing to appreciate the true greatness of lyric in this song. I would invite anyone to drive from Duluth Mn northeast to Thunder Bay where Canada starts. AWESOMELY spectacular, just like this music....

grew up in Beaumont with Johnny, had the same luthier, named Chip, and I got a lesson in life via Johhny. Chip was setting up one of my guitars, a lucite strat, and when I tried to see what he had done with it, I said I thought it was still difficult to play. He said Johnny was by the day before and shredded it. Nuff said!!
I saw Johnny live on Friday night, 5 days after the Super Bowl. He did an amazing 90 non-stop minute set, got a standing ovation and did "Dust My Broom" and "Highway 61" as encores. Probably the best show I've seen, ever.
It's funny how after the awful Super Bowl, nobody's been writing that the BEPs are too frail to be performing, or that Christine A is too old to remember the national anthem's lyrics.
Personally, I'm hoping Johnny will do the Super Bowl halftime show in 2012.

When you've played the blues your whole life, jammed with the greatest musicians alive, lived breathed and slept the blues through countless decades like Johnny Winter has done, playing becomes mind to fingers, simple as that.
He might be old and frail, but he's knows better than anyone onstage what to do in that situation and it shows. A great guitar player is made through age and experiance.

What you probably didn't see in this video is that Derek has been playing his whole set and brought Johhny up as guest. I think Derek is right where he wants to be here. Yes and the Firebird is killer.
