So, when they first debuted in 2013, RM and SUGA took a LOT of shit from other rappers for "selling out" by becoming Idols. One rapper in particular, B-Free, called them girls and said they couldn't call themselves rappers any longer. "Mic Drop" was 5 years later.... at this point, they were a huge success and B-free quasi apologized... this is their response. Piss off. We don't need or want your approval or validation. :P
Don't think it was just about be free at this point. They were getting big in the US and some people were doing the same.

BTS would put on an unforgettable Super Bowl show, but the NFL and their fans would go for it. But if you want to see what they could do in a performance of that size, watch their performance on the 2019 MMA awards. It’s like the Asian equivalent to the Grammys.
The Super Bowl. Many ARMYs would like to see BTS create a halftime show...and it would be amazing. Why haven't they been asked? They are not American, not even North American (i.e. north of Mexico). They have performed for events like the Grammys, but BTS was asked solely to boost ratings. Which they did. But the way it was done, the way the Grammy producer/director/whomever decided to bait fans from the opening, felt slimey.
Just FYI...
Jungkook performed last year at the opening ceremony for the World Cup. Jin will be carrying a torch in France for the Olympic games.
As much as I would love that, I think they need to be better known and their songs better known with the American public. People are very judgmental about the Super Bowl performances and I could see it being a lot of hate to them. On the other hand, it would also probably expose a lot of people to them that would like their music.

I don’t know if hardcore NFL fans would be open to BTS. There would be ugly rhetoric about their hair or makeup and xenophobic comments about lyrics and pronunciation. America seems to have forgotten that it’s a melting pot and almost all of us trace our roots back to another country.
I used to wonder the same thing about the NFL but do not underestimate the backlash the NFL would get for having a Korean band at the Super Bowl. And I sure as hell do not want these 7 guys subjected to more of that crap. Also, I’ve heard that the demo is wrong & that the tickets would sell out for BTS. No one would care about the 🏈 game, lol.
Anyway, Fire was one of their core songs that started their rise. The dance at 3:33 went viral and people all over the world 🌎 did it. Also, it was Jin’s first chance to break out of the “strong silent type” persona he’d been initially given by Bighit and allowed him to be himself. The V you see in this is so close to V’s actual personality then. He was a multi-talented free spirit who shines. They all shine. It’s a great OT7 song and I ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Suga in the beginning. Their real personalities start to gain definition overall.
I knew I was Army when I saw this video and saw V ironing Jin’s shirt while he was still wearing it for me. That was a brilliant moment and window into the joy these guys can generate.
just fyi 1 of the inspiration of the song came from rm viewing president obama's speech to congress & at the press corp dinner where he dropped the mic.

I think you've got exactly the character of these wonderful guys...because they've been through a lot together, you won't see on their faces any trace of pride or personal ego in their relationships, they always support each other even in their solo projects. And indeed they are quite shy behind the cameras, they often don't seem to realize the level of popularity they have, they are also very humble, polite and down to earth, but they know how to appreciate their own work and they "brag" only through the lyrics of some songs in which they answer those haters who are quite a lot unfortunately! BTS boys are very funny, they know how to be happy with little things and most of all, they spread through their lyrics love, positivity and what I found very interesting, that idea that it's okay to be wrong but to ask for forgiveness, it's okay to fail but to get up every time and to always fight to fulfill your dreams. One of the cool things about their music videos is a lot of the stunts and sets are real, such as the guy getting set on fire at the beginning. The flames were real. They show it in behind the scenes videos 😊

I recently saw that BTS are now the most awarded artist in history... not sure if that includes their individual awards, so I'll take this with a grain of salt until I see it from more sources. I DO know that they had well over 800 physical awards two years ago.
Just a few days ago I read from the Korean reporter, they've received 1400 awards as of early July 2024. I think this record included individual ones.
Yes it was announced that they have 1, 400 music awards the most any artist in music history has ever amassed. They knocked MJ off his stand but we knew that was coming after they beat one of his other records.
Yes, it was reported as 1400 physical awards and it was pointed out the time span was much less than other artists as well
I've heard you now many times talk about how you don't get "dance" and let me tell you, I'm a 36-year old metalhead and didn't get it either, until I got into k-pop and started working out for my health and incorporated "dancing" into my workouts... it's FUN!!! and very hard, but I swear it's the best workout ever, you feel like you went to a party and it loosens up your body, makes you feel light and young again. I recommend it.
If we’re being honest, I do stupid little dances to make my wife laugh ALL the time.
I get that it conveys feelings and there’s art to it. I’m just so unaware of how difficult it is or what the message is.
Maybe there is no message and it’s just catching the feeling. 🤷♂️

So I think what you are picking up with the dancing is how they block it. They are extremely good at utilizing their space and creating seamless transitions to highlight whoever is singing/rapping at each part. In addition, their dancing is way more complex than any western boyband I have ever seen and I grew up during the height of boybands.
BTS all excel at dancing and have practiced hours upon hours to perfect their craft and it really shows with their ability to be synchronized and yet have their own style at the same time. I honestly think you would enjoy watching a dance practice and it may just push you over into loving dance. Their choreographies go with the songs and really enhance the performances. I recommend the Fire dance practice. It is just mind blowing choreography. Also MJ is one of their inspirations and you can see that in Butter and Dynamite as well as Jungkook's solo song Standing Next to You.

We were all holding our breaths when Usher did the last one because he collabed with JK and we (delusional hopefuls that we are) prayed JK would rappel down from a SK helicopter to perform with him and then ascend back into the sky like an angel. LOL

I thought it might be useful to tell you (I found it relevant and enlightening when I first heard it) but ‘K-pop’ or ‘idol groups’ were essentially developed out of almost nothing in the Korean music scene at the height of the MTV era, which is why the visuals and performance are so integral to the production, unlike Western music which evolved gradually from the purely phonic era of radio and records.

You think this is worthy of a superbowl performance, you need to check out MMA 2019. its a korean award show and instead of performing one or two songs they were given about a 40 min time slot to perform and they basically turned it into a BTS concert. It is mind blowing and will leave you speechless. It literally puts US award shows to shame. Oh and they obliterated the competition by sweeping all 4 grand prize trophies. Equivalent to US Grammys.

I cannot wait to watch your journey with them! As far as why they haven't played the super bowl, mostly it's because the people in charge of hiring those acts don't see BTS as the stars they are. You should check out their MMA 2018 performance. Melon Music Awards. It's a music award show in Korea. If you really want a treat, I would check out the 2019 performance too but it's much longer, even if it's worth every second!

"Edgy pop" - that us a good description of "Fire". I love everything about this song! I find the dance to it especially mesmerizing - the precision, the way the movements POP, their synchronization..it's just SO SHARP! AMEN on the Super Bowl gig!!! Omg, if they were to do that, they would pull out all the stops! I'm trying to remember the year because I'm a granny (I have a 20 yo grandson!), but I THINK it was the show that they did for the 2016 MAMAs (kinda like the Asian grammys) - it was STUNNING!!!! Like... just CRAZY!!!

Honestly, I'm sure they will eventually get that SB invitation. It's really the only big US stage they have left - they've played The Late Night Show, SNL, New Year's Eve at Times Square... The problem with SB is two-fold: 1. US white men (fb fans) who only want to see BTS as pretty boys in makeup and 2. Army will snatch up all the tickets and the fb fans will be pissed.
But seriously, BTS are fantastic live performers and would kill that stage. They are the best concerts that I've been to (and I've seen some of the artists famous for their live shows).
Yeah, but the SB halftime show always pisses off the actual football fans. There’s a way to do it that throws them a bone. Seriously, just throw one iconic guitarist on stage with them for 90 seconds to add a killer riff and it will keep them happy enough.

Re profanity, while you’re probably right not to F-bomb left and right, JK’s explicit version of Seven is the one that smashed the charts, and he f-bombs at least 20x in one pop song. So, Army isn’t that sensitive.
Other of their MV's have 1billion views and at the point of reach 2billion and other's about to hit 1billion views. BTS have songs with over 1billions streams on Spotify as do their solo songs.
I think you caught on to the subtext of the songs from this era without consciously realizing it.
The idea of being a “loser” was unthinkable for a South Korean teen at the time.
For a group to even suggest it on one song was revolutionary. BTS devoted a trilogy of albums to the message that “It’s OK to slow down a bit, chase your own dream, go your own route.”
Some of the songs were actually banned for this message.
About 100 years ago, when I was a kid, I took Taekwondo lessons. Our instructor was from South Korea and always seemed to take himself way too seriously. He also worked 3 jobs.
Years later I bumped in to him in a small bar. I was surprised he was there as he never seemed to do anything fun.
Turns out, he got tired of trying to impress his dad and he was actually there to chase his dreams of being a rockstar. He took the stage and played a 90 minute acoustic set that night.
He was terrible… but he was happy.

Always pause a bit at the end as just when you think the video is over it's not. Many of their songs have deep meanings & some connect to others. As to why they are not in the Super Bowl, take a guess why, probably the same reason they don't get included in some of the rankings, other bands & labels don't like the competition. It's sad. And you're right these guys remain humble. They continue to credit ARMY for their success. They are all MULTI-TALENTED. I am so happy that ARMY are all ages. As cool as it would be, BTS doesn't need to perform at the Super Bowl! They can fill any venue without all that football! The Super Bowl would not be a good venue for them....they'd be subject to too much racism and xenophobia.

About the dancing -- in the Kpop world, all members/idol-hopefuls are trained for years before potential debut to master dance (hip-hop-based), which is why I like to think of these groups as "dance crews who sing and rap". I completely understand your feeling about the old-school "Western boy band" 'dancing' -- which is absolutely not my cup of tea either. It's like they intentionally make it cheesy (and also it was just that era, haha). I only really became interested in Kpop because of the dancing -- how totally clean and precise (yet not robotic) they are. It shows total mastery, aka muscle memory! You only get that from endless hours of learning and practicing, over a number of years.
When I watch BTS dance practice videos (and some other groups), I'm just amazed and mesmerized by the precision and the constantly flowing, intricate formations and movements, and all the little details that -- when performed in perfect sync by a group of individuals -- is just so darn impressive to see. Seeing BTS dance so synchronously as a group is a beautiful thing. 😍 They are like 7 people-one body sometimes (which is only reinforced by the fact that they really are as close as family, maybe even closer with everything they've gone through together).
Mic Drop wasn’t egomaniacal but instead a response to all the haters who tried to sabotage them and/or told them they would never succeed for whatever reason. In early interviews when confronted (even on camera) these boys literally responded that they would show them and prove themselves. They beat all the odds and succeeded despite the system set up to hold them down. One word: ARMY. Army made sure they would succeed and defended them against the corruption. No one else has a fandom like Army.
That makes sense. I guess “self-assured” is a better word for it. They know what they’re capable of and can shut down any crap-talk. Love it!!! 😍 🤩

I echo the sentiment that you should watch the MAMA 2019 award show performance. You will forget that it's not a concert! I don't know the mix of general attendees to fellow performers in the audience, but they all behave like it's a concert too!
From what I've read from other comments, some of it was pre-recorded, some of the special effects were post production, some of it was live. Supposedly, if you see them performing and you can see the audience, it was live. So Jimin's solo dance was live, JK's was pre-recorded (probably because it involved water), for example.
I've only recently read that this was the big production that it was because it was supposed to be BTS's goodbye before a world tour and then enlisting, but Covid put a stop to the tour and they were able to delay enlisting for a couple years.

You were impressed with 411 million views for "Fire" -- the thing is, it already has over a billion views, but (for reasons unknown to me, haha), that one MV was posted on two channels: HYBE's own channel, and on 1theK, where it currently has 762.7 million views! (Also, tell me why HYBE's own MV has the wrong translation, and 1theK has the correct one: It should be "it's okay to lose", not "it's okay to be a loser"). Anyway, not counting that, BTS has 6 MVs so far with over a billion views... they have something like 70 to over 100 MVs (a few are 2 versions for one song, etc.) and views are naturally spread out over so many choices, so having 6 over a billion is impressive -- would love to see the 'next in line' Blood Sweat and Tears, and then Fire finally reach the billion club. 😆
Did you know that with the Dynamite MV in 2020, Army (and probably also the 'general public') went ham and racked up 101 million views in the FIRST 24 HOURS of release (setting a record - which has only been surpassed by BTS' second English song, Butter, which had 108.2 million in the first day, and that record still stands today as most-viewed in the first 24 hours)... but many fans suspect that in the past 2-3 years, TH-cam has been tamping down on real views for BTS MVs (because, unlike with most other companies/groups, HYBE doesn't buy ads on TH-cam, so TH-cam doesn't directly make money from BTS' exposure -- that's what I heard anyway. TH-cam could always make excuses like 'we suspect bot behavior'... but who really knows anymore). Not complaining (I love TH-cam, haha) but just something to keep in mind. Or not. Numbers are fun. Numbers matter. And they also don't matter. 😄

I think Not Today would be a great superbowl type song with all it's stomping choreo and inspirational lyrics. Highly recommend that one for you to watch soon. From one metalhead to another there's another Korean band I'd love you to react to, I think you'd like them a lot. It's a girl group called Dreamcatcher, they're kpop but with a unique twist. Won't tell you what the twist is cos spoilers but they are often referred to as the dark angels of kpop if that piques your curiosity lol
I agree about the super bowl show. Only issue is that kpop is considered a gen z interest to the average american over 40, and that isn't the target audience for NFL. i have a feeling they will one day though.

The Superbowl thing is a lot to explain. First of all, Anti Asian hate is still a thing. Also, BTS has very famous well respected American musicians playing in their name already, lol. A lot of Superbowl half time acts play when they're about to announce a new album or concert to boost sales. Western companies hate having competition for sales and $. If BTS were performance at half time, more BTS Army fans would show up than football fans. It would be bonkers. It's really all about companies not wanting to put kpop on radio and not wanting to acknowledge their album sales, etc. BTS company Hybe did acquire some American record labels so maybe it will be different one day.
