There weren’t subtitles for this video. Important lyrics though. RM (one of the three rappers) starts by asking the listener what is your dream? The truth is that you might not have a dream, but society puts pressure on everyone to have a dream, to dream big, and that that dream must fit into society’s idea of a common or “safe” dream. What about individualist dreams, those that are not the norm? They then ask When you look in the mirror, who do YOU see? Have you ever tried really hard for something that you want? Pretty impressive lyrics for a rookie group, huh? BTS were struggling with these questions themselves and that’s why their songs are authentic.

Fun fact: The guy who pushed the girl against the lockers (Jin) kept apologizing to her afterwards because he was afraid that he did it too hard and he's just so nice and caring.

There are three rappers and four vocalists in BTS. They were originally put together as a hip hop group and it's still the bones and soul of what BTS is. The 3 rappers are the main songwriters, composers and producers in the group, though all of the members do all of those things now. Namjoon/RM writes the most and Yoongi/Suga composes and produces the most as those are their particular areas of interest and talent. Hoseok/j-hope writes, composes and produces too, but is also the dance leader, helping to create and teach the choreography for BTS and lead rehearsals and stage performances. The vocalists are all younger, either physically younger or in the case of Jin, musically younger, as he came to music much later than the others. They have grown into their writing, composing and producing skills more over time.

Yes, No More Dream was BTS debut song and music video. Their ages during this video were Jin- 20, Suga- 20, J-Hope- 19, RM- 18, Jimin- 17, V- 17, Jungkook- 15. For whatever reason the subtitles are auto-generated (never trust auto- generated subs). But they also uploaded their earlier music videos to channel 1thek and those do have correct subtitles. Actually that "make money" part you heard were actually Korean lyrics that meant "what is your dream". There are actually videos dedicated to BTS misheard lyrics. Boy In Luv is from 2014. You might actually like War of Hormone by BTS too. It's a song that has a little attitude to it. Dionysus is good too, but it doesn't have a music video.

The group Lies Behind Your Eyes did a great metal cover to BTS "Fake Love" which you would enjoy. There is also a fun video of BTS reacting to it that you could watch.

The best thing I can think of is...listening to BTS is like riding a roller coaster.
You're in the straight, you're comfy, you're looking around, checking out the scenery...suddenly, there's a sharp turn to the right, followed by a gradual turn to the left, then...oh, look, you're upside down!
The songs are rarely what you think they are when they first start.
BTS REALLY like keeping us on our toes! LOL

Their debut song, No More Dream, was hard hitting socio-political messaging that was criticizing the S Korean school and social system that puts so much pressure on kids that they have the highest suicide rate in the 10-19 age range in the world. Kids in S Korea have incredibly long school days and intense pressure from teachers, families and society to get a "good, stable job" and "make good money" not to have any dreams or follow any passions. They have no room to dream. So BTS, these kids who took the other road of great risk by following their passions ask "What is your dream?" It's not a coincidence that the chorus, repeatedly asking "what is your dream" in Korean sounds like it is about making money in English. That's Namjoon's genius multi-lingual wordplay showcasing the pressure on kids to make money, make money money and not to dream. Yoongi/Suga talks in his verses about wanting "a big house, big car and big rings" but not having "any big dreams" as a representation of this failure of imagination in the youth, spurred by that generational pressure not to even think about passions and dreams.
As a debut song from a broke group from a powerless, nothing label, challenging social norms and speaking out against the system and their elders in conservative, hierarchical S Korea was BALLSY as hell. BTS has always been like that. Speaking their truth, consequences be damned, especially speaking truth to power. At this time, three of them were still in high school and two had just graduated, so they were very much speaking to their own experiences and to their peers.
They do have a debut single that is a "Here we are/We're going to kick ass/watch out for us" song. It was their second debut single off the same album, released at the same time as No More Dream. It's called "We Are Bulletproof Pt 2" and there is an MV and here is a link for one with Eng subtitles. Their very early MVs didn't have English subs.

They did it live at MAMA 2019 award show and then went into Boy with Love but started out with an RM solo Persona' that was only part of their set for that award show were you get to hear different mixes of other songs. They did a 45minute set at the award Show where they won all the major awards (Daesangs) and it was supposed to their last performance before entering in the Military however covid hit and all their plans were put on hold and the reason they are servicing later than they intended to serve.

You need to watch their song "Spine Breaker" and the making of their "Spine Breaker" mv. The guys literally created/directed their mv for the song. It's so funny too. It's one of their older songs as well. The song is really about the stress put on parents backs because their kids want expensive things like designer clothes, the newest tech gadget, etc. It's really worth a watch. They were babies! Lol! 😊💜
The softer music you heard at the beginning of "Boy in Luv" is from the song "Just One Day", which is more of the ballad you thought you were initially getting.
Their second mv, "We Are Bulletproof, pt 2" also doesn't have great cc, but you can check it out at the YT channel somebody mentioned in another comment, 1theK.
There is a Pt1and it is a similar sound, but pt2 is better, imo. The only video I know of it is a live performance.
Some have confused "Boy in Luv" with "Boy With Luv" which is a more recent song. This song is more pop, but it still has a very good rhythm to it. It features Halsey. The strange thing is that you see her in the video but she's not on the song much. At least that's the case when you watch the version with over a billion views. If you watch the version with only 105 million views (still a Hybe video, I believe it's the "ARMY with Luv" version), you can hear more of her. Still not a huge amount, but more.

Their earlier videos on Hybe Labels channel have no English subs. The official channel they used to release official NVs with subs is called 1theK.
No More Dream was a wake up call to the youth that they should pursue their own dreams, nit their parents' dream.
I think you would love War of Hormone, still early BTS. Video is so funny! I think you would also love Jump, similar sound to Boy In Love. There is no MV but a live performance is fire.
I love this BTS era, i think because i am a rock and metalhead 😊

Boy in Luv, from their third album Skool Luv Affair, which was released in 2014, is not dedicated to ARMY. It's a youthful and aggressive rock-rap based song that is about young men being confused about love and about how to approach or talk to their loved one. Here you get growly, aggressive BTS, really right in your face. The girl represents an archetype, and they try on different archetypal roles with her as well in the MV: the cool guy, the hot guy, the sweet guy, the emotional guy, the tough guy, etc, trying to figure out who they are and what their partner would want and how to express their feelings. The lyrics even ask "Dad, how did you approach Mom?" The style of the MV is based on popular high school KDramas of the time.
There is a paired song to Boy in Luv, made 5 years later in 2019. BTS sometimes pair or group songs on a theme or answering one another. That song is called Boy with Luv, and it is a more mature understanding of love and it *IS* dedicated to ARMY. It's about how love is really about being vulnerable and about being interested in all the tiny things about your loved one, all their interests and traits, hobbies, passions and habits. The name of the song in Korean is "A Poem for Small Things." The MV is thematically based on the classic film Singing in the Rain and the song is off their Map of the Soul: Persona album, from their Map of the Soul album series, which really deep dives into Jungian psychological theory and explores their own personal fears, faults, strengths and passions.
BTS first official fan song was "2! 3!" and was released on their Wings album in 2016. Although I would say "Just One Day" from 2014's Skool Luv Affair album is also directed at ARMY. Yoongi/Suga wrote it in the hospital while recovering from an emergency appendectomy in the middle of an overseas tour and wanting to be back on the stage in front of ARMY.
Also - FYI - BTS does have moody, slow jazz songs, and R&B songs, and songs with classical strings, and ballads, and acoustic songs. You name it, they have probably done it....
Basically, any song by BTS you choose, in any genre, will be amazing. IMO, their discography has no skips, as a group or with their solo work. I feel like BTS is accidentally tailor made to appeal to the incredibly eclectic musical tastes of Gen X (you and I) but they also hit that sweet spot for many other age groups globally too.

This was their debut song. Jimin had abs for days at 16 1/2 yrs old. They were fans of old school rap. Jin's looks drove the girls nuts, they were all handsome and this got them attention. BTS music will surprise you often. Also, each time you hear a new BTS song it becomes your new favorite. The oldest, Jin, was 21, and the youngest Jungkook( JK), was 16 I think. also FYI go into your CC and you can make the lyrics bigger so you can read them. Hi again! I’m late in watching and paused after your ‘No More Dream’ reaction. Yes, I does give off that vibe! They started of to be more of a hip hop group and slowly changed the styles to fit them better. Others already explained the gist. I love and miss seeing reactors watch old school BTS, though I love their eras as they move forward. Hint: since their company budget was so low, they used minimal props here and even had some staff as extras! It’s funny to see Jin trying to be such a bad boy here 😂. Seeing this again really ages me! 😂😂😂
Other recommendations I saw I think you’ll like! They write and produce their own music though in the beginning it was mostly RM or Suga and Suga mostly producing. Now, all of them do! That was 1 of the things Bang PD who put the group together wanted - for them to express themselves rather than other K-pop at the time that would do other things. Yes, I’m being very general here. Sorry. E.g. Think you’d like Danger, Dionysus (no MV though, maybe Dope, and so much more! I especially love when they sing/rap live with a rock band at times too. 1 already returned from the military. Do react to any music YOU like to do! It’s your channel and enjoy! BTS Forever! Borahae 💜🇨🇦👏👏👏

They do have love songs about girls - more so in the early days though. One of the things I enjoy about BTS is that they subvert expectations. Yes, they sing and dance as a boyband does, but they have something to say. Yes, this song's title sounds like it should be a cute love song - they're just gonna amp it up and be aggressive with it (Boy in Luv). You like funky, upbeat songs? Okay, but they're gonna make it a political commentary about their corrupt government (Am I Wrong?). How 'bout a sultry, neo-soul song that's really more about losing yourself in a relationship (Singularity)? They've got all kinds of songs, some are exactly what they seem (Boy with Luv) and some come out of left field (Spinebreaker). I love the variety and messages they give. I would recommend Fake Love - but check out the extended version video. It is a guitar-based version that might appeal to you more. Thanks for giving these guys a listen and sharing your thoughts!

And they were touring with Linkin Park. 😂 Seriously, Danger might become your new favorite and you wouldn't feel as weird telling people your favorite BTS song. The Mo-Blue mix is 🔥🔥🔥, vastly overlooked, and is a performance type video with one of the main writers who was one of the first non-Korean artists willing to work with them and was considered a bit of a national treasure in his own country, Vietnam. I usually watch a new MV without lyrics. Second time with lyrics. Hard to take it all in at once.
The earliest BTS videos (MV, behind the scenes, Bangtan Bombs) don't have subtitles. Thank goodness for Bangtan Subs' TH-cam channel. Videos can be found there with English subs.

Fun fact: the Korean title of boy in luv is "상남자"(sang-nam-ja)", translating to "real man" and referring to a very cool and masculine man/'tough guy' (kind of like what people might refer to as 'alpha male'?), however, it does NOT refer to vulgar/crude/indecent men.
The song, like its title, portrays teen boys (which matches bts' ages at the time) who wish to be seen as super masculine and cool/like 'bad boys' in front of girls (which I am assuming is a pretty common thing to go through as a teen boy).
Bts have always written songs about their own experiences (or experiences of people their age) in the stage of life they are currently going through which is one thing I absolutely love about them. So, while this notion of 'men have to be masculine and tough to be desirable/cool' is obviously not a 'correct' or 'progressive' way of thinking, it is REAL and true to the feelings of many boys growing up. So, even as a young (and very much feminist) woman who doesn't agree with the mentality of the song, I still adore it for the realness and (assumably) relatability to other young boys growing up. (Plus, the music itself is an absolute banger, I regularly go out of my way to put on boy in luv because it's such a vibe lol)
"War of hormone" is another song which I feel very similarly about. It got a lot of criticism for its sexist lyrics when it got released (and ended up apologizing) but while I 100% do not agree with some of the statements made, again, it simply portrays what hormonal teenage boys feel when they start thinking about girls in a sexual manner (it's literally called "war of hormone") which is totally fine as the topic of a song imo. Plus it's not like they are talking about women in a hateful or malicious manner, the chorus going "여자는 최고의 선물이야" meaning "women are the best gifts". Musically it's one of my favorite songs as well, also has a similarly gritty vibe to boy in luv and is suuuper fun to listen to!
Additionally, I want to point out that bts has grown with their music. As boys they talked about first experiences with love and attraction and now, as men, they have a much more nuanced outlook on these topics which typically comes with age. In 2019 they actually released a 'response' to boy in luv (released in 2014 btw) called "boy with luv" which showed their growth in actually coming to understand 'love' itself. The Korean title "작은 것들을 위한 시" translates to "poem for the little things" and talks about how you start being curious about every little thing that the one you love likes, how they do things, their small habits; no matter how ordinary, whatever they do is special to you. Love doesn't have to always be something grandios, just appreciating the small things you do for each other and wanting to protect them can be enough. In one line they say "이제 조금은 나 알겠어" translating to "now I understand a little", showing how they have grown to understand love better while growing up, but still do not know it perfectly.
Sorry for this awfully long comment, thought maybe someone might be interested haha💜

You should watch the series The Rise of Bangran. It gives background information about the K-pop Indusrry and the Korean culture and it follows the members pre-debut till 2018 (I think). It shows off their personalities and how hard they worked to get this big. It also gives more info about the casting, the auditionning process and being a trainee. The Rise of Bangtan has it's own TH-cam channel. It's fanmade and it's really well made and very addictive... At a certain point they talk about the meaning and inspiration for the song 'No more dream'...

sorry but it's wrong about the lyrics it's not about 'make money' the those are Korean lyric's and some Korean words to those of us who speak English sound like English words'. It's a social comment on the oppressive education system and social expectations placed on the youth in SK so that they don't have any real dreams of their own. No more dreams it's talking to the youth who have no dreams of their own but are forced to try to fullfil the dreams of society and parents. It's also asking the youth what is your dream, fight for your own dreams you don't have to conform. A very brave thing for them to do as their debut song. 13th June 2013.
