  • 3 MUST DO'S BEFORE MASTECTOMY. There were a few things that really helped with the initial stages of recovery after my double mastectomy. In this video I highlight two things that I was already doing and one thing that I wished I would have done before surgery. I hope some of this will help you before having your own surgery.

In retrospect is there anything that you did that helped with your recovery after surgery?

I started walking for a month and a half before my double mastectomy. I walked 8 miles over the whole day. I recovered twice as fast as some of the other women that had it done when I did. I am so glad I did it. I wish I had done some abs! I needed to raise up from the recliner because I could not use my arm the first week. I am over 60 and recovered well.

Sheila, that's great you were so pro-active before your surgery with walking. Our pre-surgery physical state makes a really big difference in post-surgery recovery. I didn't realize how much my abs would help until I needed them after surgery!

I’ve watched several of your videos. You give a lot of great info. I definitely used rocking to sit up in bed, my husband would “spot” and help by supporting behind my back. I borrowed a recliner for the first three weeks. I found I could nest into pillows there and feel more comfortable without being on my side.

I'm glad you're finding the videos useful - especially you tried the rocking to sit up in bed. That was a bonus that you could borrow the recliner post-surgery.

This is really helpful. My mastectomy is in a couple of weeks. I’m going to start doing the shoulder exercises and try to get in and out of bed using abs. And work on sleeping on my back! Thankfully I have a recliner to sleep in after the surgery.

There’s so much out of our control with cancer treatment so being proactive with a few things before surgery can definitely help. Hope your mastectomy recovery goes well!

Thank you for posting this video. I have started exercising ahead of surgery for a mastectomy. Not only will it help with my recovery period after surgery, but it is really useful in maintaining a positive mindset. Thank you!!

You're welcome! You're right...it will help with both your recovery and your mindset. 2 things that we can actually do something about going through breast cancer treatment.

I did walk before I went into surgery to have my mastectomies. I walked to the hospital because I want to stay as fit as possible.

So glad you posted this information! Presurgical information is crucial. Not all doctors give this information or they tell you the day of surgery as if you will remember...

Thank you soooo much for making this video. I am 10 days before the SMX surgery and i was looking for this kind of exercise. I am not sure how much it will help to do it now till surgery. But I am betting on “better than nothing”.

How does a masectomy effect going to the gym, weightlifting, overhead rope pulls, etc? I just found out I'm high risk and a lifetime of 2x year ultrasounds, mris, and mamos and the stress that goes with all those might make this an option. I'm in my early 60s and very good health, and fit. Thanks!

I wondered so much about this before my double mastectomy. My function is quite good. I do CrossFit and have gotten back to many of the movements that I used to do. I have side effects (cording, lymphedema, radiation fibrosis, shoulder pain/dysfunction) but these are all related to lymph nodes being removed and radiation, not my mastectomy. Not sure if you’re wanting to do reconstruction but that’s my biggest limiting factor as my implants are UNDER the muscle and I omit most chest exercises. I’m going to do a video coming up about the exercises that I did for the first 12 weeks after my double mastectomy, so watch out for that.
