Rehab & Self-Care Tools after Breast Cancer Surgery
Hi, I’m Erica. I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at 43. I had a double mastectomy, radiation & reconstruction (tissue expanders to implants). It's been quite the ride!
As an athlete and a chiropractor, I wanted more guidance with rehab and recovery. Working out throughout cancer treatment has been a huge part of my recovery both physically and mentally. It's also been helpful in this new phase of survivorship. I've been navigating the limits of what I can do physically, especially with implants placed under the chest muscle.
I’m making videos that I wished I would've had as guidance. The videos cover what to expect with:
✅ surgery, radiation & breast reconstruction
✅ rehab and self-care tools to address side effects of treatment (cording, radiation fibrosis, lymphedema, chronic neck & shoulder pain). I had all of these side effects and more!

I haven’t had lymphedema (yet) but I’m glad I watched this video! I’m about to go back to work for longer days. I’ll be careful to vary my posture (luckily I already have a sit-stand desk) and stretch regularly.
Thank you so much!! Very helpful for me!! God bless you 🙏
Glad the video helped! Hope your recovery is going well.
Thank you!
Excellent as I had trouble finding out about breast enlargemnt due to lymphodema would be great to have some techniques to use at home
Glad the video was helpful. All the best with your lymphedema recovery.
My exchange surgery is in two weeks. It's hanging over my head and I just can't wait til it's over. Looking forward to putting all of this behind me. This was most helpful and very informative.
Yes, so much waiting during cancer treatment! I remember really wanting to be done my exchange surgery to feel like I was moving forward. All the best with your surgery and recovery.
Thank you. This has been a great help for me❤
I'm so glad! Hope your recovery is going well so far.

I had auxillary breast tissue removed from one armpit. No cancer thank goodness. Its been 4 weeks. I noticed severe tenderness along the inside of my arm down past my elbow and super tender spot just below my inside elbow in the soft tissue. My Dr insisted it was from me favoring my arm and had nothing to do with his surgery. I actually felt the cords tonight in my forearm. How soon can I begin exercising the arm? I'm almost 67. I've had a radical abdominal hysterectomy for cervical and endometrial cancer 3 years ago.I have been using it and trying to extend it with finger walking and rotating hanging swing.
The cording strategies can be started 4-6 weeks post-surgery. If you’re at 4 weeks I would check with your health care team for your case. You could also follow some of the general rehab exercises post-surgery to progressively work on your arm movement (Look for rehab videos 0-3 weeks and 3-6 weeks post-surgery). This would be in addition to the cording strategies.
Have just had bilateral BC diagnosed and 1 side has 3 tumors. The surgeon has given me the choice of lumpectomy both sides or a mastectomy 1 side and not the other or a double mastectomy. Then there's the decision about reconstruction.Honestly ,it's so overwhelming.I am an indecisive person at the best of times about trivial stuff.I think I have the decision about mastectomy but am really not sure which way to go with reconstruction.Don't really want to have to worry about exchanging implants in 10 years or so but on the other hand the fat removal looks quite brutal.
Yes, so many decisions at this stage! Not just about cancer surgery but reconstruction too. I was fortunate to be so decisive. You may not get that decisive YES for one option….but just a feeling that once option makes a bit more sense than another. Hoping you get some clarity soon!
I'm older with a 3 generation family history of breast cancer, one person in my own generation. For me, double mastectomy, including going flat or nipple sparing at most, would be the best options for feeling I won't find myself revisiting this issue. I'm currently scheduled to undergo diagnosis, so this might look different to me should the possibility become a necessity. But having your video is already helping me prepare for what might be ahead. Thank you for letting me and others like walk in your shoes for a few moments❤
Wow, thank you for your comments! I’m trying to pay it forward with all the information that I would’ve wanted when I went through treatment. A double mastectomy has definitely given me a little more peace of mind, but it’s not always the right option for everyone.
Thanks for the video - very helpful
Glad it was helpful! So much to think about at this stage.
Great video, thank you!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
Hi dear. I want to know when to use a bra. I have already 4 months and weeks after surgery. I surgery breast right side only . And i never do the radiation and chemotherapy. And I done removed 7 limp notes from arm . Kindly advise. TQ.
As for when to wear a bra, I would speak with your surgeon about their recommendation as all cases are different. Unfortunately, I can’t comment on the specifics in your case.
Thank you, dear.
Very good demonstration of stretching.
Thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching!
Asymmetry can cause pain, not only in the area of the body that is unbalanced, but throughout the body. This is seen in people who have had one limb amputated, even if they received a prosthetic replacement. Apparently, asymmetry can even shorten the lifespan, as well as shortening the healthy lifespan.
That's correct - assymetry can definitely cause pain. I see this every day treating patients.
I’m prepping for lumpectomy and the nurse said a well fitted sports bra is also fine if I don’t need to pull it over my head (I step into them and pull up) - would you say it is practical or should I rather invest in a proper medical bra?
You could try what your nurse recommended and then if you notice any significant post-surgical swelling or lymphedema you could invest in a specific bra - www.prairiewear.com/ERICA10. All the best with your upcoming surgery!
Is it okay to use a hand held massager
If it were me, I wouldn't use a hand help massager. Becuase your sensation is limited after surgery it will be hard to tell if you're putting too much pressure. Using your fingers will also be more effective.
You mean off table forever
You can check with your surgeon but the restriction to avoid sleeping on your stomach isn't always forever.
Hello guys. Actually I’m going to start radiation soon.. please any advice about diet , creams, clothing, … before and after each session.. thank you
All the best with your upcoming radiation!
Where are the links to the products?
Links are in the description. Are you not able to see them?
You explained this so clearly. It explains everything I'm feeling months after my radiation was completed. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback. It still surprises me with how many side effects there are post-radiation. Not sure if you watched these already but the strategies to address this are in the Radiation Playlist (2nd half of it) - th-cam.com/play/PLALVgJH_QhhiBu-YSGlOfhQvdYgMuWWOU.html
Thank you for sharing
You're welcome! All the best with your recovery and welcome to the channel.
If one decided not to have reconstruction after full mastec, subsequently few mths later regretted n wanted reconstruction, can it still it done?
Yes. Your options for reconstruction would be different at that stage. Eg: if you had flat closure for the first surgery then you may need autologous reconstruction (DIEP, lat flap with implants) as your skin can't be stretched to put an implant underneath.
Shortly after my left side mastec, I felt my right side nipple area had a lump underneath as well as at the side of the nipple. I'm just afraid it's cancerous. Awaiting results after my scan. If it's cancer, should I do mastec n reconstruct both sides? Or should I do lumpec on right right n reconstruct both sides.
Even if it's non cancerous, I may be thinking of removing the lump outside close to nipple as sometimes the slight uncomfortable feeling is disturbing. Still thinking should I remove whole breast (mastec) or partial only nipple area n some cysts/lumps underneath. Could I have your view on this. Thank you so much.
I'm thinking they should have told me this was possible.
Yes, knowing what to expect can definiely be helpful going through cancer treatment!
After radiation my breast shrunk so now there is a dramatic, very noticable difference in sizes. Is this going to help with that?
Unfortunately not! Mine shrunk a bit but it sounds like not as much as yours.
It's like median nerve
Correct!
Very helpful Thank you❤❤
You're welcome!
After so many surgeries, lymphatic massage really does help make the soreness go away almost immediately! I’m grateful my FT showed me how, and then you came along and reinforced the message. I will keep working at it, thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing! The self-lymphatic massage really does help. That’s great that someone recommended it for you.

At 72 , my doctors say it won't go away unless Jesus heals me, Thanks for the video

Thank you. I have cording, in my arm and down my ribs. Your videos have helped.
It was so werid to have cording down my ribs. Glad to hear the videos have helped with your cording!
Thanks for making these videos! Those of us in rural areas couldn't get physical therapy and your videos have been so helpful. God bless you!
That's good to know. Physical therapy is great but you can get a ton of improvement doing consistent rehab post-surgery. Keep at it!

Thank you! Having my skin sparing bilateral mastectomy in 6 days, will have expanders put in over the muscle immediately after. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
You're most welcome! All the best with your upcoming surgery.
I’m not seeing any drain tubes so I’m not sure how u can go through any of these exercises.
I took a lot of the exercise videos after the fact so that's why you don't see my drains. I never planned on making a TH-cam channel to share all of this information. My drains were in for 6 days. The exercises were definitely more uncomfortable that first week because of the drains, but not enough to prevent me from doing them!
@@breast-cancer-rehab I have done some exercises but the result was my drain tubes started filling up more
Always important self-assess to listen to your body!
I just completed 5 sessions of targeted SBRT radiation for ovarian cancer at a high dose of 6gy per session and I am in terrible pain in my abdomen where the tumour is. Severe nausea too. I guess it really depends on which area of the body they are targeting.
The side effects from radiation can be significant and you’re right, it all depends on the area that was radiated. I hope that your symptoms settle down soon!
Those mfers couldn’t give you Rx for creams before treatment?
I probably wouldn’t have used them if given at the beginning. Not everyone gets significant shin changes and I would have wanted to see what the actual changes were without cream…and then used it when I needed it like I did.
Do you have any sources on training through chemo? Research shows it optimizes the outcome, but I cannot find anything on how to train while dealing with side effects.
I don't. I haven't done any videos on chemo yet because I didn't have it. At some point I'm going to do some interview style videos with other cancer thrives talking about their experience with chemo.
Hi! A wish if you could make a training video to follow along in real time. ❤
Noted! Thank you for this idea.
Thanks a million dear. God Bless you abundantly for sharing. Had my left radical mastectomy on 28th May am sure your exersise will be a big help for me God Bless you abundantly
I’m sure this will help with your recovery! Even better if you continue on with the videos in the next stages (3-6 weeks, 6+ weeks).
Very helpful!!
