Part I: Hysterectomy & Excision Surgery for Endometriosis & Adenomyosis

- After years of ‘dealing’ with painful periods, recurring GI issues, and chronic pain, I will be having a hysterectomy and excision surgery for suspected endometriosis & adenomyosis. In today’s video I explain my backstory, the symptoms I’ve experienced along the way, and the procedure(s) I’m undergoing in an effort to heal my body. No two people are alike, but I’ve met many like me who struggle with the pain and frustrations that I’ve experienced. Unfortunately, these chronic conditions are still drastically underrepresented in society, but by sharing and being open about this situation I hope you feel less alone. I’m extremely grateful to the friends, family, and medical professionals who have helped/are helping me navigate this process. Please be patient with us if there is a slight lull in our regular content.

Wow, I had no idea about any of this. You brought me to tears, this is my life. I have had all of these symptoms since I started my period and I am 40, and had no idea why, no Dr has helped. They just keep recommending birth control and it’s never helped. My daughter is 14 and has heavy and disabling periods already. Because if this I will get us both seen. Thank you.

May I recommend finding a specialist to go to vs an OBGYN for example. I wasted 4 years of my life in pain, then I went to University of Rochester specialist. They changed my life. Praying for help for you. You are not alone.

How was the recovery
I had a hysterectomy at 22, I suffered from the time I was 16 (that’s when I finally started my menstrual cycle)with painful periods, endometriosis, fibroids and random some cysts down my Fallopian tubes. I spent almost every month in the ER when I had a period (very irregular cycles) while I was pregnant I had another major fibroid in my uterus that grew with the baby. Now 51. I just had some blood work done and I’m officially post menopausal and I have never taking any HRT’s.
Adenomyosis is truly awful! I went through the same things, regarding heavy/long periods etc. Having a hysterectomy was the BEST thing I ever did! It went smoothly and I had no complications at all. I have felt so much better! Good luck, Danielle! 😊

Uterus & cervix removed. Did you get both removed? How do you feel? Sort of afraid to get both done although my Md suggests it
I did have both removed and did great after! Make sure you have a pillow to hold on your stomach and some ice packs to sit on. I had a few days of discomfort, but nothing horrible. I was exhausted for a long time after. I would start feeling well, and think I was up to doing things….but I wasn’t! So, don’t push yourself. I’m sure you’re going to do great! Best of luck!

Oh, Danielle. I'm so fricking sad that you've had to go through this excruciating pain every day. You and Caitlin know about my rheumatoid arthritis and I can honestly say you know what it's like. This list of symptoms is so similar to mine but I feel like my gyno has never even suggested this for me. It’s so strange that it’s not even an option that doctors throw on the table but I’m definitely going to ask her about it. I am currently living my life the same- pain and anxiety over how many tampons and pads I’m going through and not even wanting to leave the house. Thank you for sharing, as always. So grateful to hear you say that hormonal BC was hard on you emotionally. I had never had PMDD until I tried BC in my late teens and again in my 20s and both times I became suicidal, was depressed and anxious to a point where I could barely leave the house and I ate like food would never come across my plate again. I called it Chicken Little Syndrome: my body and my mind thought the sky was falling / world was ending / and my body's nesting instince was so intense, my appetite was never satisfied. I always feel odd explaining these symptoms because every other woman I knew said they never experienced this. You and Jena Friedman have described what I've been through. Of course, I have alwasy been able to notice when my friends went back on their hormonal BC becaise they did become more anxious, moody, irritable, etc., but I also felt like it wasn't my place to say. It isn't as if there are a ton of great options for women for BC. we have more than we used to, but truly there still isn't much. Thank you for your channel!
Thank you for doing this video! I am scheduled for my hysterectomy in June 2023. I was diagnosed with endometriosis 7 months ago. I am not sure the time yet. I will be watching the other videos soon too
Appreciate you sharing your journey. I had my hysterectomy back in 2001. Took a long time for my doctor to diagnose all my symptoms. I was nervous, but it has been one of the best decisions I made.
I’ve been moved over the months by your openness about everything. My sister had a hysterectomy years ago, and it was brillant. I have developed illnesses that immediately took away my period, and it’s that silver lining in a bunch of funk. Getting rid of the bleeding is a beautiful thing, and I hope it resolves all your pain.

I have a depth of understanding that kinda freaks me out. My past experiences with periods are spot in with yours. From day one, horrible pain and bleeding. Throwing up, unbearable cramps, missing school/work/events, suffering through every period. After decades of suffering and progressively getting worse with more symptoms, I finally found a gynecologist who really truly heard me. I knew what endometriosis was but I had never heard of adenomyosis until I was diagnosed. I ended up having a complete hysterectomy 4 years ago. Best thing I’ve ever done. You will have some bumps in the road because it is major surgery and your hormones will need to adjust, but girl you’ve got this!
OMG!! You recorded this MONTHS ago but I’m JUST watching today! I was recently diagnosed with adenomyosis and will be getting a hysterectomy ASAP…I hope!! My periods have been awful for the past 3 years and have become unbearable in the past 2 months! I have ALL those symptoms..heavy, prolonged bleeding/clots, bloating/fullness, diarrhea/constipation, nausea, headaches. My blood count has gotten so low from all the bleeding/clots that I also have iron deficiency anemia and need iron infusions. I finally have a doctor that is doing something, so I see light at the end of this very long tunnel! So THANK YOU for sharing your story. I WISH I had found you sooner!
How was your surgery and recovery? I've been dealing with Adenomyosis for about 4 or 5 years. I'm scared of surgery but this is mentally and physically terrible so im going to get it done soon.

Gosh! I’m in tears right now. I have been dealing with a lot of stomach issues and I have never put together that my painful periods and fibroids are causing me that too. My surgery is in a few days and I’m praying that all of that goes away 🙏 you got me in tears when you said you didn’t want to eat anything while going out with your friends Bc you were afraid. My situation was so similar! I also went out to my car and just wept because I finally felt so validated as well. I now have the best team of doctors that coordinate my care for all my medical conditions and that has changed my life. I've had several surgeries, but my hysterectomy was life changing and the best thing I ever did. I'm thinking about you as you navigate this chapter in your journey.

I just had a complete hysterectomy Tuesday. I really appreciate your videos 😍. The only things I have not had issues with are GI. I came home Friday, it's Saturday. You're great. I still can't laugh 😂 properly because it hurts, but you're on point. Thanks so much for being transparent.

I’m so sorry you have lived with this for so many years. Your story sounds exactly like mine was. April 24, 1986 was the greatest day of my life when I had a total hysterectomy. Never regretted it for a minute. I am very thankful I had a GYN who diagnosed me in my early twenties but felt I “needed” to have children. Well, we didn’t want children and after my husband had a vasectomy the doctor finally realized we were serious about the no children issue. So at 39, my life finally changed. I hope you do as well as I did and feel the date of your surgery is your greatest day too. Good luck!

Thank you for this video. I've been experiencing pelvic and GIT pain for so long I am so tired of it. I hav 90% of your symptoms. My recent ultrasound finally detected possible adenomyoma or fibroids. My OB/GYN has suggested hysterectomy but it's such a daunting thought.

I had hysterectomy 2 years ago at 43 and I regretted not having it earlier. Because why ? I felt happy when I woke up from surgery. Good luck once more, you will be fine.
Danielle -- thank you for being so honest, open, and raw about what you have been struggling with. I had a very similar history as you, including the whole Yaz situation. It was like listening to my story, with slight variations. Mine is different in that I would have periods that lasted 2 to 3 months straight -- 60+ days of consecutive bleeding -- even being on the pill. I had difficulty getting pregnant and staying pregnant. I was blessed with one successful full term pregnancy and have a beautiful son. I had so many ultrasounds and sonograms over the years in an attempt to figure out what was wrong. Finally in 2013, with the help of advancements in sonogram technology, they discovered I had a septate uterus-- which means that I basically had two uteruses -- I had a wall splitting my uterus into two cavities and mine was especially rare because it spanned horizontally instead of vertically. So for all those years on the scans when the quality of the photos was not what it is today, the extra wall near the top of my uterus was seen as just a normal uterus -- the clarity, or lack thereof, did not show that there was actually a cavity above. My gynecologist thought that was the only reason for the excessive bleeding. A hysterectomy was my only option if I did not want to suffer any longer. So I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy in 2013 at the age of 43, after suffering since the age of 10 (I still have my ovaries, but she removed everything else). When the tissue was examined by a pathologist, it was discovered that I had adenomyosis as well. I want to assure you that it is worth it to have the surgery! I cannot stress to you enough how dramatically your quality of life will increase. There are no words that can emphasize the degree of the change. The last 8 years of my life have been so different than the previous 33! I don't need to explain how -- you get it because you perfectly described how your cycle ruled your life. It won't anymore. If I could offer some suggestions for your recovery post surgery: 1) make sure you have a heating pad near you -- it can help ease the discomfort as your body heals, 2) have Miralax and apple juice on hand -- the gas bubbles from the procedure can be quite uncomfortable and mixing Miralax with a small glass of apple juice is a game changer (my gynecologist specifically told me to use that brand with apple juice), 3) with assistance from someone, get up and SLOWLY walk for about 5 or 10 minutes a few times a day starting the day you come home - you won't feel like doing that, but it makes such a difference in getting everything moving again and working the gas bubbles out of your system (I walked down to the end of my cul-de-sac and back, roughly 3 houses from the circle) 4) buy some grandma underwear in a size bigger than you normally wear -- your abdomen will be swollen for a bit from the procedure and it takes some time for the swelling and air to calm down; you want the underwear to come up over your belly button so that the elastic is not resting right on the incision area 5) have a pile of comfortable, non-compression leggings to wear during your recovery timeframe 6) consistently take the pain meds on a regular schedule for at least the first week -- don't skip a dose and don't let extra time elapse between doses 7) fatigue will suddenly hit you -- like BAM -- for several weeks after the procedure -- try to limit time out in a store, etc. to about 20 minutes -- you think you are fine and then it just comes out of nowhere and you simply don't have the energy to take another step or stand. ~ Sending you so much positivity! xoxo
I had a robotic assisted hysterectomy in August r/t heavy bleeding peri menopausal & had endometriosis as well. I was on low dose BCP to help control my pain too. You’ll do fine with the surgery it’s easy breasy💯✌️ You’ll be happy after not to deal with the pain & bleeding! No more!
Great video, this has been me since I was 12 years old . My periods leave me anemic. It’s gotten so bad that I’m on disability. I’m 30 . I’ve missed out on so much life such as school, work , social life, due to painful periods , heavy periods, vomiting, passing out, PMDD , painful sex, gut issues, etc . I’ve been passed around the health system. Searching for a doc that will listen.
I commend you for sharing your story. I wish that there was more information available for me years ago when I struggled with very similar symptoms and experience with uterine fibroids. My doctor tried to convince me for 10 years to get a hysterectomy but I refused because I was very misinformed. I can tell you that I finally got fed up and had surgery 5 years ago and it was the best thing ever. My recovery from a hysterectomy was EASIER than a period. How is that possible?? I'm now living a new normal in which I don't plan around my bodily functions. I feel like I have control. I had gone undiagnosed for many years and sounded just like you. Finally found a thorough, compassionate Dr. that was willing to listen and investigate. I had adenomyosis and had a hysterectomy 12 years ago. Best decision ever! I was missing out on so much of my life and after surgery and recovery, I was able to enjoy life again. This video made me cry, I had the exact same experience after my first Gyno surgical appointment. The validation and relief that my symptoms were not all in my head did wonders for my mental health. I had the excision surgery and after 4 miscarriages I am at a place I am ready for the hysterectomy
I have been diagnosed with Adenomyosis as well as the early stages of Endometriosis. I am now 48 and soooo done! The past 7 or so years have been horrible. Thank God my husband is so supportive of the monster this has brought out of me lol. I love your videos and it helps me more than you'll ever know to hear the same stories I have been telling others. I am booked in for surgery in less than 2 weeks and I am just trying to stay calm about it. I know once my vaginal hysterectomy is done I will be able to get on with my life again. No more pain, no more anxiety, noore missing work and not letting this disease run my life. You are hilarious and real by the way and I really, really needed that right now. Thank you for the video.!

Thank you for posting this! You are really going to help people with this information. I was misdiagnosed- literally blown off and dismissed by many a doctor with 8 years of misery and infertility before landing in the hospital with pain and bleeding so badly I could not sit up without passing out. Even then I was diagnosed with fibroids. After my hysterectomy that took 6 more months, bleeding everyday still, to get approved and scheduled, Finally massive relief- best thing I ever did!!! My surgeon came in hugged me and profusely apologized that my Adenomyosis was overlooked for my entire adult life. It took post surgical biopsy to finally get this diagnosed. How did these specialist I sought out miss this??? They never really listened and I never found the doctor I deserved. I am so happy you did! You got this- I feel AMAZING now, no pain or GI issues.
I just had my diagnosis two days ago and it was so liberating!! My surgery could still be 1-1.5 years away, but just knowing that there will hopefully be an end to feeling like this, is amazing. I love that description of the uterus, it's so true.😂👋 For a long time now I've had awful GI symptoms that you described perfectly - being nervous to even eat.. my Endo doc referred me to a different GI doc (previously saw one), so hopefully they'll be able to restore my gut and that part of my life (eating is a big part of life😳).

Hi Caitilin! I just want to say that you took a very good decision and I'm sure this will change your life in a positive way. I have both endometriosis and adenomyosis, 6 weeks ago I had a laparoscopic surgery, they took out the endometriosis, feel good about that but the adenomyosis makes me feel still very bad, especially while the ovulation time. I am thinking about histerectomy as a solution but not yet decided, we would like one more child, I have an 11 years old and I had a miscarriage 2 years ago, don't even know if I can still get pregnant at all. It's pretty tough for women dealing with this health issue. I wish you all the best!

Just found you. So thankful. I had a hysterectomy back in 2007. I had numerous cysts and extensively horrible periods. I finally just told my gyno to just take it out. Turns out my left ovary had so much scar tissue from the cysts that it had to be removed as well. It was sent to the lab for testing and was told later I had endometriosis as well as adenomyosis. I still have cysts on the ovary that is left, but was thrown into early menopause. I now have zero libido which causes massive tension between myself and my husband. I’m at such a loss with my body I’ve just given up.

I had Adenomyosis and LORD talk about heavy, painful period, the clots were huge. I was 45 and new I'm not having another kid, and any woman who does in their 40s is out of their mind. Getting a hysterectomy was the best thing ever
My heart goes out to you. Thank you for speaking about this and sharing with us. It’s something that needs to be more spoken about. I suffered from the time I started getting periods until five years ago. I was always told the crippling pain I was experiencing was normal. It wasn’t. The dismissal of women in pain is whole other issue that is just … ugh. I had my first excision surgery for endometriosis and got so much relief but less than a year and a half later I had a cyst rupture (worse pain EVER - worse than childbirth) and that led my doctor and i to ultimately decide to get my hysterectomy. We yeeted everything - cervix, uterus, and both ovaries. It turned out the endo had come back with a quickness as well as more cysts. I was 32 when I got my hysterectomy and it was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I feel indescribably better. It can be challenging emotionally at times due to the hormones but i would donut again in a heart. I wish the same thing for you. An MRI showed that I had adenomyosis and endometriosis. I had every single symptom that you mentioned including sibo symptoms. I opted for a uterine artery embolization (UAE) to remove the adenomyosis. I just had my procedure done and it has been a painful recovery for the first week but I am now in my 2nd week of recovery and I hope it gets better. I hope your procedure works for you. Good luck!
I can definitely relate to the situation that you were going through. I am 36 yrs old and I just had a robotic hysterectomy. I am now 2 weeks post surgery. I had painful periods and the bleeding and blood clots was just terrible. I was diagnosed with a condition called adenomyosis several years ago. I had tried different types of birth control pills some of which helps but I was in a different metal state after a while. After speaking to a different Obgyn from the one I had back home in Jamaica, he understood exactly what I was going through. I even showed him a picture of a big clot that dropped out on my pad before I was able to make it to the bathroom . I always hear about the hysterectomy procedure, however I was a little scared but after he explained to me the ins and out of what the procedure entails it was a no brainer for me. For one, I have a 16 yr old son and I’m married. My husband and I spoke about it and he was also relieve for him to hear that I was going to get the procedure done.He was so worried about me and he just never knew what to do to help. He hated to see what I was going through.During my surgery the doctor found out I had fibroids, which was alarming because all the years of going to my Obgyn and running all sorts of test and even biopsies, no one told me I had fibroids but I’m thankful he was able to remove it. It was a big one too. I am already feeling great mentally and physically but a little sore on the inside. I am definitely taking my time to heal.

You are going to do great through your surgery and put this all behind you with a pain free life. I lived with endometriosis for about 18 years. At its worse I was bedridden with severe pain every month (it even hurt to fart, I kid you not). Never was anyone so grateful for menopause as a solution. All the best. BTW what is talk therapy? Did the Dr give you meds to put you in menopause?
Don’t worry it is not difficult surgery, you will not need to stay in bed for long, your back will ache for about 5 days. I had a radical hysterectomy due to a scare of Ovarian cancer. Because of all the other symptoms constant severe anemia I was going to have my uterus removed but the ovarian scare moved the surgery up to immediate. Luckily for me I had just the cell changes of the ovaries it was caught in time. Actually, I am grateful for the other symptoms because Ovarian cancer is almost a silent killer. Just don’t lift anything past 5 to 10 pounds for 6 weeks. Also, the scare goes away but you will be swollen in that area for awhile. Good luck and I promise you it make your life so much better.
I am 51 and have struggled with heavy, painful periods since my teens. Because I have been in peri menopause for several years, I always put off seeking treatment, figuring that it would all be over soon enough and then I would just be dealing with changing hormones. That has not been the case, however, and it seems like I get my period every 2 weeks - sometimes it is just a trickle, and other times it is super heavy, clotty, and crampy. I am having surgery in a few weeks to have part of my thyroid removed, but once I have recovered from that I am going to go back to my GYN to see if there is anything they can do for my symptoms. I have alot of these symptoms. I have had 4 children each 21 to 24 months apart. Had my tubes tied after #4, after several dr visits, pelvix exams, blood work, ultrasounds, ect.etc. my dr has diagnosed me with angry uterus or uterine inflammation. We have scheduled my partial hysto for October 24th, my gi will also be removing Mt gallbladder during this procedure because after about 15 years of pain in the gallbladder area and multiple hospitalizations for the pain and multiple tests done no dr has been able to figure out my gallbladder pains and issues, I found a new dr who is doing a hydascan on September 19th just to check things out but he said regardless he is going to remove it for me during my partial hysto procedure. Wow I have had all your symptoms and I went to get an ultrasound and found out I have Adenomyosis on Monday and I have a hysterectomy scheduled next Friday.. I'm nervous as heck but glad I won't have a period anymore !!!

Last year I had that same surgery. (My endometriosis was preventing my kidney from emptying so for a few months I had a stent in my ureter.) Anyways - having that surgery was the best thing ever. Like you, I never had children. When I think about all of the suffering I experienced, I should have had the surgery years ago. I always joke and recommend everybody gets a hysterectomy. Good luck!

I am 43 and had a hysterectomy because of fibroids 2 months ago. I have no children but I never really wanted any so the decision was not nearly as traumatic for me. I had all the symptoms...bloating, IBS, long and heavy and painful periods with clotting since I was 11. When they did the hysterectomy they found a bit of endometriosis as well so rather than have multiple myomectomies, I had the dreaded surgery...but after getting a 2nd opinion, just to be sure coz we don't want to loose body parts in major surgeries for no plausible reason.
I had one at Mercy by Dr.Im this June. I had the same thing as well as a frozen pelvis. The recovery sucks take all the time but it is nice to not have a period ever again!
