Available as an injection or through IV.
How to use it?
- Injection: usually your doctor or nurse will inject ceftriaxone as a fluid into your but muscle or into a vein.
- Intravenous infusion: your doctor or nurse will insert the infusion. This will usually at least 30 minutes.
When to use it?
Ceftriaxone is part of a group of antibiotics called cephalosporin. It is a third-generation broad-spectrum antibiotic, which can be used to treat infectious with several types of bacteria. For example:
- Infections of the respiratory tract, like a pneumonia or an exacerbation of COPD.
- Infections of the skin, like a wound infection
- Infections of the urogenital tract, like urinary tract infections or syphilis.
- Gastrointestinal infections, like a bile duct infection.
- And it can be used preemptively before or after surgery.
What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- So in general your doctor might prescribe a dose of 0,5 - 4 grams of ceftriaxone 1x per day, ranging from a treatment duration of 1 day up to 14 days.
What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, inflammation of your stomach, skin rash, allergic reaction and changes in your blood values.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): headache, dizziness and vertigo.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): fever, chills, anaphylactic reactions, elevation of liver enzymes and genital yeast infection.
- Very rare (0.01%): gastrointestinal haemorrhage, inflammation of the pancreas and blood clotting abnormalities.
Safety:
First of all there are no limitations for this drug regarding the usage of alcohol or driving a car.
However, ceftriaxone can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Therefore always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
Lastly, ceftriaxone can usually be used safely when pregnant or when breastfeeding, but again discuss this with your personal doctor.

Hello my name is Nanci and I have a question. 2 weeks ago I had to go to the local ER in Prescott AZ. Having high B/P. I have also been diagnosed with recent DX of chronic kidney disease. As protocol they got a urine sample as well as blood sample. They started an IV with a hemlock. Never gave me any IV fluid. I was told I had a UTI so the MD ordered IV Rocephin. The nurse came in to administer the med she was being shadowed by a nursing student. She administered it through the heplock quickly. It was administered within 30 seconds. It was very painful. I even asked her “isn’t that to be administered slowly” she paid no heed and continued to administer the med. about less then a quick 2 minutes I had to urinate so I did with no complications. I went directly to the bed. I went straight back to the bed. All of a sudden my vitals started to crash Along with my Heart rate. I started to fade out and blank out. My words I couldn’t form any longer. It actually felt like I was dying. The monitors were alarming. This went on for about 5 minutes then suddenly my vitals started to stabilize. The MD came in and told me I had a vagal response. I hold an active LPN license just not presently working in the field and know what a vagal response looks like. I told the MD that between him and me that it was the Rocephin that made my vitals bottom out. Back to my question. Could that Rocephin being administered so quickly have caused that kind of reaction. I have never been given Rocephin before. Boy they got me the hell out of there quickly afterwards. unfortunately I am not able to find an instructional video on how to use this medication. including but not limited to how to mix/infuse the powder vial with the syringe liquid. alot of videos say they will cover everything you need to know.....thanks anyways.
Why don't you ask the doctor who prescribed it to you for instructions instead of trying to find them yourself on TH-cam.
I was on home IV Ceftriaxone (PICC line) for 6 weeks because of Endocarditis. Towards the end of my course I developed a rash on my back and trunk. Very strange that I had a reaction near the end and not after the first dose. It did the job and cleared the infection but that rash at the end was pretty weird.
