I went to a lot of concerts in the early ‘70’s, with a lot of big names, but Elvin Bishop will always stand out as the one concert where absolutely EVERYONE was out of their seats and dancing to his rhythm and blues. Makes me smile every time I recollect that night. So, so FUN!
Never got the Chance to see The Paul Butterfield Band.Or his main man,,Steady as a ship in a calm sea..Elvin Bishop,,Who played Such smooth an Lead guitar..Elvin, never git the pleasure of you solo either..Still Love your groves attitude on life...Your a giver man..not a taker...Love all your work man...Play on..Elvin...
I had a fake ID in 1979 when I first discovered Son Seals at Wise Fools Pub in Chicago. I became a blues addict / "groupie" ever since. Every weekend was spent in the city seeing Son, Mighty Joe, Albert Collins, Otis Rush, Junior Wells, Koko Taylor, Big Twist and so many more. I total blues junkie I was. LOL! So much so that I am now 60 and Buddy Guy's tax CPA! Funny how things work out.
If you love music a Elvin Bishop show was must see live music event. Last time I heard him perform was a benefit concert at the Fox in Oakland early 2000's with Bonnie Raitt , Steve Miller and the Doobie Bro's .. I was smokey so I forget who the benefit was for but I'll never forget how great the music was.
Most of you probably know that Elvin got his big break when Mike Bloomfield left the Paul Butterfield blues band, and Elvin got a chance to shine. Some of his best playing is on the Butterfield album, “the resurrection of pig boy crabshaw“ and you should check it out. This video was up many years ago, and somehow I lost track of it. So glad to see it again.
Nobody but Elvin Bishop would strut out into the crowd, sit in between a couple of fans and play a solo just for them. That's classy without even realizing it... The dude was all about fun. "Elvin Bishops sitting on a bale of hay. he ain't good looking but he sure can play..."
Travellin' Shoes is one of the best live jams ever. It is the most underrated jam I swear. The Raisin' Hell live album ranks right up there with the best live albums ever.
I was blessed to see Elvin Bishop in the seventies up at North fork California, that's up in the mountains if you don't know it was one hell of a time.
I taped this on my old VCR when it played on my local PBS station back in 1979! Played the Hell outta of it until my tape finally wore out. One of the best Sounstages EVER! Terry and Jerry were also AWESOME!
How great it is to see this. Elvin is definitely a piece of work but things haven't always been fun and games in his life. I'm so glad he's still with us and making music. If there isn't a statue in Tulsa dedicated to Elvin there sure as hell should be, but one in Chicago would be just fine.
Yes, I was shocked when I found out why he'd written What The Hell Is Going On. Hell of a terrible thing to happen. I don't think I could've coped with it like he did.
These musicians aren’t only amazing each off their own what strikes me is how much they enjoy making music . I bet they would enjoy even if it were for free , this is MUSIC.
I nearly forgot there was music as fun as Elvin Bishop! Just wish I caught some shows back then, I had one album of his that I wore clean through, but musta slept through every show he did near me! At least I can catch up with LP's on the internet...
Elvin...I'm goin fishin.....priceless Bishop is a unique talent, able to blend his Okie country style with rock, rhythym & blues Great slide player and songwriter as well.. With two blues legends...Mighty Joe Young & Son Seals...Love Mighty Joe Son Seals is one of my favorites...he lays it down with a relentless groove The 3 guitar head cuttin at the end is awesome, even if the sound quality is below par This old grainy video is a treasure!
Thank you 1000 times for posting this ! I watched this on a 14 inch black and white TV when PBS first broadcast this show. I bought a bunch of albums from these guys over the years. I knew Elvin and Mighty Joe could play but I had no idea at the time how good Son Seals was. I don't think PBS ever rebroadcast this show but I hope one day they will ! Thanks again, you made my night !
This was the BADDEST show that PBS EVER broadcast back in 1979. I had taped this on my VCR and played the Hell out of it until the tape died. I was blessed that this finally popped up on You Tube. At the top of my Favorite Concerts of ALL time. The other one was Fats Domino on Austin City Limits.🤪🥰🙃
@@timconnecticut6263 I recall years ago PBS re-booted Soundstage, where I hoped they would televised this episode. But, it was not-to-be, as it consisted of newer acts. The new version of Soundstage didn't last, as the handful of shows was stretched out over three seasons.
It’s a shame when they wait so long to induct someone into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame. Yet I am glad because I had always heard his name, my dad had Paul Butterfield albums. I’m glad I was reminded that day in 2015 to re-check out his stuff, unbelievable.
I was fortunate enough to see Elvin a couple times in the early '80s in small clubs in Northern California. Pretty sure some of this band was with him but there was a helluva lot of alcohol involved so I can't be sure. Unbelievable talent and energy.
Thank you so so much, RerikFidgikiwi, for sharing! Soundstage was always a good show, and I miss ir. Love Elvin Bishop! Such a great jam! I hope that audience appreciates how lucky they were, to be in the presence of all that greatness. Thanx to all of these Bluesmen for the music of my life. Bless you, gentlemen, for the magic, music, and memories.
@James Pollock . . . I appreciate you brought up the comment thread on the sax players with a name, and _Thank You to @kingperkoff for the other name_ as I always marveled at their performance in this TV show since I first saw it on a PBS station back in the early 1980s. So, after 40 years, I finally have the names of Terry Hanck and Jerry McKinny as the sax players.

Elvin live is a good time!!! 👍
Fun is the key word! Look at the musicians: they are having a great time and it naturally transfers to the audience.
Im pushing 67yo. Grew up on Rock metal etc. But could never stay away from cool soulful bands like this.

King Biscuit Power Hour featuring Elvin Bishop is a great album/ cd.

Elvin got a free ride at any Ivy League school of his choice. He chose Univ of Chicago, met Paul Butterfield, and the rest is blues history.
42 years ago and still stoking that red Guitar 🤩👍🤗
Yes indeed! I will be seeing him Friday, September 30 in Ojai, California! With Charlie Musselwhite!
“Travelin’ Shoes” …. Incredible !! 37:45 on.
Time machine me back to this show. SO much fun.
Oh my, so good. The jam at the end is wonderful.

Melvin Seals went on to be Jerry Garcia band keyboardist and is an absolute legend. Still rocking today.

I always felt like he was channelling the Allman Brothers on that song. Agree with Raisin' Hell, still one of my favorite live albums.
Amen.❤
This isn't a Rock Concert, it's a Cultural event . 😂

E.B. played the Ventura Hillsides Benefit- was muddy sounding soul and R&B.How to classify his style? Multi- genre-all catchy. The man is all heart

Thank you, I was hoping this would be here somewhere. The instrumental at 29:33 is Jimmy Reed's "Honest I Do." What a lovely cover of a lovely song!
It is indeed Honest I Do. Thanks.
@@RerikFidgikiwi Of course! Thanks again for posting it! Everyone is on!
This blew me away when I first watched this back in 1979 on PBS! Jimmy Reed was my fave blues singer.
Amazing!
Golly, would that just happen to be a young Terry Hanck on one of tenor saxes?
Gee I believe it is
Yes and the other saxophonist is Jerry Mckinny (R.I.P.)

Son Seals, a legendary guitarist and his contemporary Mighty Joe Young.

Thought I just about died from not cooking my frozen fish long enough. Last 2 pieces out of a frozen 14 pound bad if talapia
Thanks!!
Troll fishin' is fun! 😁
All right!
I ate it too fast. It was so good.
Elvin really played up the whole down-home Okie boy routine, but I think he was a really smart cat. Like Jimmy Buffett smart.
Is that you uncle Pat and uncle Herschel?
Who put that hearse next to Denny's?
We didn't do that in my family. We don't spy on ours
Are you sure those aren't crappie
Maybe they were blue gill😂
Just curious... anyone know who all the band members are? I know Terry and Jerry are on sax. THANKS...
Fly Brooks on bass, Ricky McCracken on rhythm guitar, Melvin Seals on keyboards. Not sure of the drummer.
5 minutes into this.. umm.. is the audience comatose?
I survived. I am alive.
Unless that is my dad his sisters and their husbands
Is that spudsy potato
First Son Seals song is “ cotton picking blues”.
Thank you!
My self better hair cut
Seals was a bad mother.
