When you ask one person to pick box 1, 2, or 3, you cannot meaningfully influence them because you cannot be privy to the method by which they choose the number. Most of what he does - in his stage shows at least - is just a normal magic trick sprinkled with old-fashioned charm coated in a veneer of modernity. Presentation, Presentation, Presentation. He basically just seduces the audience in to forgetting that they should know that much can be done with hidden cameras, secreted pagers feeding back to him from the cameras, hidden animatronics, false panels, sleight of hand etc.
No it’s not... he’s basically hypnotizing everyone, while being an incredible performer & a thousand other things. I know you want to act smart, but don’t diminish his ability to “memorizing & slight of hand” 🙄 that’s not even close to all that he must do in order to perfectly pull this off.
1:05:47 - this moment I was told was 100% not planned, and the audience went with it. No prompt from Derren, who was off side at the stage getting the broom. A wonderful moment, which for her will be a memory she will cherish for years to come.

For those saying “you can’t hypnotize everyone” of course you can’t but successful hypnotists are masters at spotting the most susceptible people, and then playing on the emotions and ignorance of the rest of the crowd - for example, putting a needle that way through fascia doesn’t hurt and won’t draw blood, but saying “of course it won’t draw blood bc it’s a wooden hand” makes it seem magical!
After I saw him apply the Monty Hall Problem in his performance, every bit of doubt in my mind is cleared about him. Legit this man is the one, with whom if I get to have conversation, I can die without any regrets.
Please release more of the live shows thats been done in the past and the spin off specials to, along with extra bits, miss watching them when there not on channel 4, and just gets me every time, love it
I've always loved the usage of Isla Cameron's "O' Willow Waly" from The Innocents in this, it was my first time hearing it and I've used it several times since for various things. Haunting song. Glad to see it used in this context again, so many years later.

I've was called up on stage once in a live stage show. It opened my eyes to a lot of how he does what he does. It took away my innocence of how amazing he is, but now I admire him in a different way. He's not a mind reader. He is true showman and an artist.

I love how much more playful Derren has become over the years. Instead of hawking pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo about planting ideas through subliminal messaging, he now has fun with the crowd.
His entire act is deliberately peppered with pseudo science. For instance, the Monty Hall problem. Yes that would have real application in normal circumstances. But it's pseudo science to pretend that it has meaning in the workings of a magic trick! He constantly flatters the audience's modicum or largeness alike of knowledge about 'respected' fields such as mathematics, pretending that they could or should have any application in a magic trick.
