I wish I could believe half of these stories that get told but sadly, in this day of the internet, I have seen how easily humans make up, adapt, selectively hear, what they want to hear. Something said one way can be retold (if it did happen) in such a different way than the reality it makes all the secondhand third hand passed down stories interesting but by no means true.
