Beating Pokemon Heartgold With Just My Starter Was a Choice | Mister Max

- In my last adventure into the world of Pokemon, I tore up the Kanto Region in Pokemon Firered in my first Nuzlocke run on any Pokemon game. Not only did it end in success, it also marked the very first time I ever beat Pokemon Firered since I got the game as a kid. Since then I've reacquainted myself with the newer games on the Switch and realized that it's been a hot minute since the last time I ever considered touching Pokemon Heartgold. My third Pokemon game and the one that introduced me to my favorite Pokemon to this day, Totodile.
Today, I want to push my all time favorite starter to his limits. My first Pokemon will be my only Pokemon for this.

This video was recorded using an emulated North American Copy of Pokemon Heartgold running on DeSmuME 0.9.12 initially before switching to MelonDS 0.9.5. A Dualsense was to control the game and the touch controls were performed with a computer mouse.

Johto is so exp-dry that it becomes easier the less pokemon you use as long as you're using a good pick
That's why a lot of people just get carried by Typhlosion, red Gyarados and Ampharos lol

Real. Johto is my favorite region but it's also probably the most flawed (as a region, not as a game, though it's far up there too). It's also why I can never play a vanilla Gen 2 game anymore, I need challenge hacks just to have SOMETHING.
Chikorita is so good! I never got why it was so hated. It's cute, huggable and looks legitimately cool when it fully evolves.

Was this done in DeSuMe? The reason why DS emulation is so far behind is because DeSuMe was just straight up a spite project. It might sound like a meme but the developer hated Pokemon so much that he intentionally did not patch any of the specific issues that plagued Pokemon emulation. It was a mess. MelonDS is a lot better last I checked.
Originally yes, but I never got past the break in at the lab and lost that run from not saving in time. It was stable up to that point and ever since it runs like absolute garbage. I finished the final run in Melon. I'm surprised to know that Pokemon is deliberately left a total mess, but considering I had no problems with other games I've thrown into it up to this point it explains a lot.
Haven't touched DeSmuME since I got a hold of Melon. INFINITELY better experience. At least I know my dump wasn't corrupted or anything of the sort now.

I love chikorita even if she/he (depending on what gender it gives you) has a very hard time in the earlier gyms
Could have saved yourself so much time by just typing IT instead of "she/he (depending on what gender it gives you)"
@snappysausage i wrote it that way deliberately as chikorita is a male or a female depending on gender, only non gender Pokémon are Its
i usually pick chicorita when replaying the johto games. i know it's not very useful in the first 2 gyms but nobody says u have to use it there and there r plenty of pokemon to be caught along the way plus with chicorita as a starter whitney is barely a challenge anymore

Yea I didn't expect starter to present difficulty except for HMs. But Feraligator can do all the needed ones anyway, and hits like a truck to boot.
As a kid I think I beat pokemon Ruby with almost always just mudkip in battle... I was lazy, but it worked lol. I might've done the same in Pokemon blue with Squirtle too.
Idk what to call challenge runs that present little difficulty, I think Nerbit does `Themed runs` every once in a while to take a break from `real` challenges. Could be a character in a game they hardly belong, like Abe Lincoln or just sticking to one weapon.
