Monster is also about how no one can be a complete monster. Even Johan was human; the ending of the series made a point about how all he wanted was forgiveness. Bonaparta also was very human as well. He ran away from his terrible actions and tried to find redemption in that small town. He was very kind to the kid that got bullied (Vim), and tried to live peacefully. "Monster" can be interpreted as an ironic title since every character (or monster) was ultimately human.

Clannad Afterstory (just the second season) is masterful storytelling (which of course, relies on the first season's events, but still), Angel Beats! is not however. Angel Beats would have been grand if it was the same length as Clannad, but unfortunately the pacing is inevitably weak, not to mention the world isn't expanded on enough (with the OVA really a major source of confusion). I can see why Clannad is considered one of the best animes (despite the tropes, cuteness, and melodrama), but Angel Beats is overhyped, despite its many moments of greatness. Naoki Urasawa's Monster on the other hand is a true work of art, both manga and anime, and should be treated as such. It is slower and more unfocused at times than a show of similiar length like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, but all of it was necessary for the narrative. It's not in my personal top 10 animes (due to the lack of an entertainment factor and length), but it's certainly a candidate for the top 10 animes ever made. One thing is certain however: Monster is the most sophisticated anime ever because it has literally zero tropes and basic character archetypes, doesn't rely on the supernatural in order to be interesting, and boasts one of the greatest villains and greatest heroes in all of anime, no matter how little attention either of them get in that regard.
