Immortan Joe’s voice compared between this movie and Fury Road is actually pretty fascinating. As a younger man, he was healthier. 20 years later, his voice sounds demonic and Frank Horrigan-like. Knowing his health was gradually getting worse, I am not quite surprised that his voice changed.
His mental health also seems to have degraded. In Furiosa, he's calculating and cunning, coming out on top of his negotiations with Dementus while letting him feel like the winner. In Fury Road, his impending death makes him so desperate for an heir that he's willing to squander an insane amount of resources chasing his wives, to the dismay of both the Bullet Farmer and the People Eater.
This film was so much better than what the box-office numbers suggest. After seeing Immortan Joe being persistently blinded by his obsession in Fury Road, it was great to see him in this film and find out how he was able to rule in the first place; by being a bloody competent warlord. I love the way Dementus' crew are congratulating him afterwards (apparently sincerely) for his "beautifully played" and "peak"... loss of his adopted daughter (who has enormous sentimental value), loss of the best/only doctor they have (enormous practical value), and gain of... peace instead of a war (that Dementus had a decent chance of winning, as he genuinely IS good at surprise tactics!) and a third more water and a quarter more potatoes (instead of the double of everything they were demanding at the start). "She looks pale!" - Joe "You look pale!" - Dementus It makes it so clear that Dementus and his crew are totally outclassed, even if you haven't seen Fury Road so don't know that Immortan Joe is destined to still be in control of the Citadel decades later. It gets even better if you also suspect (like I do) that Joe deliberately planted the seeds of Dementus' loss of control in Gastown. "...I'll take this girl who is not your daughter , and also him... otherwise, it's war." - Joe 2:12 We can assume that Joe knows exactly how much water and food the Gastown workers needed to be productive slaves (he's been running shipments to them for years, after all), and could make a reasonable estimate of how much Dementus' horde would need to be content having seen its size earlier (thanks for that show of strength, Dementus, that was really useful info!) so him giving Dementus a third more water and a quarter more potatoes might well have been calculated to avoid immediate death and conflict by mass dehydration while ensuring that there wasn't enough food to feed both the workers and Dementus' huge horde without putting them onto starvation rations that would inevitably cause discontent and disintegration over time. If so, then that stare Joe is sending him at 3:50 isn't a glower of hatred, there would probably be a triumphant smile under his mask as he watches this upstart swagger around and declaring himself an equal right after accepting the terms of his own doom. 3:42 - i genuinely believe that Immortan was trying his absolute hardest not to burst into laughter right then and there. Not only did he completely rip off dementus but he also took his pureborn "daughter" and their groups most valuable medic all while letting Dementus think he was the sole Winner of the meeting The “genetic absurdities” line was probably the best in the movie, well delivered That guy Dementus killed was a great asset to humanity. The guy was replicating old artworks and even had telephones. He was basically the wasteland Da Vinci. He probably was twisted like Joe, People Eater and Bullet Farmer BUT i would genuinely vouch for keeping him alive solely based off his amazing artistic skills. He also kept gastown running? Exactly! And his death only reaffirms the injustice of the wasteland, no matter if you are a genius or not, your death will be just as violent as anyone there. Weird thing about the Immortal Joe crew was that they are all incredibly twisted by our worlds standards but by the standards of the world of Mad Max they were slowly rebuilding civilization by providing protection, food production, medical facilities, manufacturing goods, establishing tradelines and maybe most of all giving people a purpose beyond just surviving. Killing them probably did more damage than it did good in the long run. Furiosa: silence for 30 min Immortan Joe: Is he your father ? Furiosa: No. Dementus: Oh for fuck sake.
Your inputs are really well made and sensefull! But I believe the reason he asked for organic mechanic (doctor) was more than taking the only doctor of dementus. I believe the reason he asked for both girl and organic mechanic is that he was trying to get a healty heir. So a healty girl without defects and a doctor specialised in genetics really exactly what he wanted for years!
Lachy Hulme did an amazing job as Joe. Very fitting also its set 20 years or so before furiosa where even his voice gives cadence to a younger still healthier inmortan Joe. Not sure if its just make up but he capture Joe's piercing gaze so well, were it not for the voice and the build of his body I would say I was looking at the late Hugh Byrne, rest his soul.
not a bad deal on both sides. Dementus got to keep a fully operational refinery that he did not built nor earned...fuel in the mad max world is "the resource", arguable more important than water. If he would have played his cards wright he could have gotten an event better deal further along the line.

Question: Is Joe really as evil as he is depicted? Despite his harem and whole dictatorship thing, he somehow created a kingdom from a shit situation. In a world like the Wasteland, could old world beliefs and politics accomplish what Joe has done? The woman in his vault would have been worse off if left to their own devices; heck even Max was of the opinion that Furiosa should return to the citadel because it was the best place to be. So when I see Joe negotiating for Furiosa, he seemed more articulate and not the furious warlord we saw in Fury Road. He's definitely a scary looking bastard but he did seem to be sophisticated when talking to Little Dementus.
Immortan Joe is the textbook definition of using the ends to justify the means and is easily one of the most nuanced villains ever to be created. His intentions are bizarrely pure despite his brutal leadership methods and if he hadn't been so caught up in his own megalomania then he might've realized adopting the persona of being an Immortal leader would come back to bite him in the ass sooner or later. Furiosa was just the catalyst for the trap he inadvertently set for himself. But you could also argue that Dementus ultimately won in the end because if he hadn't made the aimless decision to abduct Furiosa and kill her mother instead of just following the tire tracks back to the Green Place, then Immortan Joe's plan would've worked and he wouldn't have had his face ripped off. I also wonder whether Max returned her to the Citadel because he didn't realize how awful the V8 cult really was, or maybe he didn't want the War Boys chasing after him if he took her away from there, hence why he was so confused and feral at the beginning of Fury Road when he woke up in the hospital wing.
If he was my commander, and I was with him during the fall, I would follow him until my death. We didn't get to see how he transitioned from Army Colonel to Immortan Joe, but he definitely was a decent man at one point I'm sure

Agreed. I feel like Immortan Joe + the Wasteland lore is too dense for just another movie though. The franchise needs a tv series with multiple seasons to unpack everything. Not sure we'll get it unfortunately, George Miller is getting on in age, someone would have to take over from him.
@@moistspillage I think that The Wasteland should at least have the story of how Joe conquered the Citadel and Mad Max's story could be a sub-plot since his character is supposed to be aloof and anti-social anyways. It would also be cool to see Joe transition from a standard gas mask to his horse teeth respirator, and also see the origins of the V8 cult.

I guess that was the idea. Not all warlords are these charismatic cult leaders, like Immortan. Some are just cringy goofballs. IRL there would be more Dementuses, and few and far between Immortans. Also its an action movie. He's decent enough for action movies.

Actually, if you listen when Dementus first attacks the Citadel, the voice he puts on for the War Boys sounds _exactly_ like old Immortan.

The issue is that the society isn't sustainable and a lot of the crimes it commits aren't neccessary.
