  • Former Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who at 14 became the first woman to score a perfect 10, reflects on that gold-medal performance at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal. "The older I get, I realize that what I've done was such a big thing," she says.

I was a kid In 1976. I remember a little neighbor girl saying "when I grow up I will be a Comaneci". That neighbor girl was so smart and beautiful like an angel. After 2 or 3 years later she died of cancer. Every time i hear about Comaneci I remember that little angel.

I relate to her as I idolized her so much during my young somewhat successful gymnast youth. To make a long story short I had a shot at the Junior Olympics but, when my grandfather died of cancer in October of 1976 my whole world sort of changed.

@@rossriver75 Simone is definitely ATHLETICALLY better but the thing with her is that she does purely or mostly just athleticism. And there’s a reason why this sport is called ARTISTIC gymnastics. Sure her routines are harder than Nadia’s but Nadia not only was amazingly athletic she was also very artistic. And btw, not only Simone, in general this sport has become mostly or entirely just athleticism, which isn’t a bad thing per say. But they shouldn’t call it artistic if it’s not artistic. 😅

what does one thing have to do with the other? at 6 she had a coach making her do gymnastics. and 10 the Karolys spotted her and made her their mission. they pushed her harder than any little girl would choose - and i doubt whether she had a choice. i bet your parents are OKAY with you living at home as long as you're doing something with your life - something that YOU feel passionate about or called to or something that you believe in or something that doesn't make you feel like you are just taking up space on this earth that could be better served by someone else. nadia had the weight of a country on her back and shoulders. if you live in the modern age - all you have is your own dreams and your own drive on yours. You only get one life - so what are YOU going to do with it? Nothing wrong with being home at 22. What's wrong is if you are doing nothing with your life at 22 or any other age. At 22 - the world is STILL your oyster. Whatever you want to do - you better start doing it, because tomorrow you will be 52 and you'll wonder what you did with those 30 years in between and WISH you had them to do all over again. So do it NOW - while you have the youth, the strength, the mind, the desire, and the chance to stack up enough dominoes in your favor so that when they finally fall - you will be able to appreciate, enjoy, and share the benefits!

Two nonrestrictive appositives at the end of a sentence may absolutely be separated by a comma, and this is the general rule, though a dash may be used. I did it again here in the first sentence. The infinitive phrases in question are not independent clauses. There are no conjuctive adverbs. There are no items in series where those items contain commas. While some might opt for a semicolon as an element of personal style, a semicolon is not required punctuation in the sentence, and one might also represent its use here is incorrect. Why must so many comments in YT turn into unrelated debates initiated by self-appointed lunch ladies and hall monitors of punctuation, grammar, and style? Such indulgences are largely peripheral, off-topic, and tangential. They add no value to the discussion and only detract.

Lisa D It is customary in Asian countries like China, Japan and Korea to give your last name first. I suppose many countries do, but here in the USA we do not. It is a cultural thing. The family name being of greater importance than one’s individual name, I suppose. The reason I know this is I am bi-racial - born in the US, raised here - my father an American and my mother Korean. I have been exposed to both Western and Eastern cultures for my entire life. I am now 57. I have always loved Nadia!!! I was just about to turn 12 in 1976; I was TRANSFIXED by her ever since I first saw her. It is wonderful seeing all this footage again! So many lovely memories. Nadia was, and still is, a very special person. She was captivating at age 14, and even today there is that quality about her that compels one to watch and listen to her. Her athleticism and artistry = perfection. She made it look effortless.😀

I think there is a particular kind of fame that ruins people more like others. As a gymnast you are not nearly as exposed to sexualization as child actors are. And then especially in the 90s and early 2000s through the rise of the internet - becoming world famous suddenly reached a new dimension. From my perspective famous children who ended up in drug addiction and psychosis are always a product of their surroundings.

With these simple ideas in her head, she performed flawlessly. The judging system was based on tenths of a point.
